Polls open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m. Polling places inside the city are KM North, Patrick Senior Center, 909 E. King Street, and KM South at Mauney Memorial Library, 100 S. Piedmont Avenue. On May 8, at approximately 10:05 p.m., Kings Mountain Police Department responded to Amiya Express in reference to a hit and run involving two pedestrians. First responding officers found two victims in the roadway of North Cansler Street, near the intersection of West King Street. Both victims were given first aid and transported by ambulance to Kings

Mountain Hospital, one with life threatening injuries. The victims were identified as Minnie Lee Clinton, 76-years old, and Rodney Jemal Clinton, 45-years old, both residing in Kings Mountain. Officers gathered vehicle information from witnesses and located the suspect in this incident at another residence in Kings Mountain.

Minnie Lee Clinton succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at Kings Mountain Hospital. Rodney Jemal Clinton was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released. The Kings Mountain Police Criminal Investigations Division was contacted to further investigate this matter. Fredrick Wilson, 67, of 529 Belvedere Circle in Kings

Mountain was identified as the suspect in this incident. Wilson was charged with Going Armed to Terror of the Public, Hit & Run, and Death by Motor Vehicle. At this time, the case is still being actively investigated and anyone with information pertaining to it is asked to contact Detective B. Joel at 704-734-0444.

Mayor Neisler leads NCLM as President Kings Mountain Mayor Scott Neisler will lead the North Carolina League of Municipalities as president over the next year. Neisler was chosen by representatives from cities and towns across North Carolina via electronic vote held April 15-20, with his selection announced Thursday at NCLM’s annual conference, CityVision 2022,

held in Wilmington, NC. Joining Neisler as officers for the organization are Fuquay-Varina Town Commissioner William Harris and Durham Mayor Pro Tem Mark-Anthony Middleton, first and second vice presidents, respectively, and Salisbury Mayor Karen Alexander as immediate past president. Helen Case House (Peaches) KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Helen Case House, 69, of Kings Mountain, NC, was called up to sing with the Angels in Heaven on April 30, 2022. She was born in Cleveland County, NC, daughter of the late Robert Charles and Juanita Louise Case and was preceded in death by her brothers, Johnny and Robert Case and her sisters Tyra Sheehan and Rosemary Batchlor. Peaches was a beautiful soul who was loved and respected by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her spirit was pure fire and ice. Peaches was a legend around Kings Mountain and will be sorely missed by many. Her light shown brightly in this world and now shines bright in the Heavens. She is survived by her husband: Joseph Kenneth House, Charlotte, NC; daughters: Janie Cooper, Kings Mountain, NC and LeAnne Keel (Kenneth), Burgaw, NC; grandchildren: Jada Mauney, Loretta Keel, Terry Keel, and Archer Keel. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at 3:00 PM in the Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel with Pastor Dennis Pruitt officiating. Ebbie “Jo” Dyer KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Ebbie “Jo” Lemons Dyer, 76, died peacefully, Sunday, May 8, 2022, with her children by her side. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Fitchue Floyd and Ruby Young Lemons. Jo was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, where she loved her Sunday School Class. She was an avid birdwatcher and gardener, and had love for cats and volunteering at her church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, Fred Dyer; sisters, Betty Fraser and Juanita Mode; and brother, Huelon Lemons. She is survived by her son, Rodney Dyer of Charlotte; daughter, Susan Dyer of Kings Mountain; and sister, Faye Bridges of Shelby. Gaston County Police make child porn arrests On May 2 and 3, 2022 the Gaston County Police, assisted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations, Cramerton Police and the Gaston County Child Advocacy Center (The Lighthouse) conducted an operation involving over 40 cyber tips received through the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC). The operation consisted of three search warrants on residences that were served by the County Police Emergency Response Team, 39 home visits conducted by eight separate teams of investigators and certified forensic analysts and multiple forensic interviews of

children at the Lighthouse. As a result of the operation, Gaston County Police have charged: • Joshua Ryan Kenyon, age 25, of 312 Durham

Rd. Stanley, NC with three felony counts of second degree sexual exploitation of a child and three felony counts of third degree sexual exploitation of a child.

Kenyon is being held in the Gaston County Jail under a $250,000 bond • Corey Lee Swim, age 28, of 213 Walnut Ave. Mt. Holly, NC with six felony counts of 2nd degree sexual exploitation of a child and six felony counts of 3rd degree sexual exploitation of a child. Swim is being held in the Gaston County Jail on a $150,000 secured bond. The investigations continue and anyone with any further information is asked to contact Det. R.L. Neisler’s selection as president follows a long tenure of public service. Neisler served one term on the King’s Mountain city council beginning in 1989, and three terms as mayor beginning in 1991. He was then re-elected mayor in 2015. In addition to his elected positions, Neisler worked 37 years in his family’s textile business, Dicey Fabrics, and he is presently the general manager of radio station AM 1450 WGNC in Gastonia. In his remarks at CityVision, Neisler lauded the accomplishments of his peers, and spoke of his vision for the future of the organization. “The successes of our state and our cities and towns did not happen by accident. This next year will be no different as we tackle our biggest issues, move our state forward, and continue to serve our communities,” said Neisler. League Executive Director Rose Vaughn Williams said Neisler, through his experience and commitment

to public service, will bring strong leadership to the organization. “It is due to local leaders like Mayor Neisler that our state is as strong as it is, and that our organization is as robust as it is. I could not be more proud to have Mayor Neisler, Commissioner Harris, and Mayor Pro Tem Middleton, along with the entire Board of Directors, lead the NC League this coming year,” said Williams. Jim served 11 years in the military serving in the United States Marine Corps, honing his leadership skills, and studied at Coastal Carolina University and Eastern Carolina University while stationed in the Carolinas. Since leaving the Marine Corps, Jim has had a 37-year career in advanced technology working in a variety of engineering field service and sales roles. For the last 22 years Jim has worked for the Walt Disney company as a leader in their critical facility organization. Jim was a member of the core team that selected Kings Mountain as the location for Disney’s largest technology center. Jim has been the site’s operations leader. Drawn to Kings Mountain’s charm and attributes,

Jim moved his family to town in 2012 and became active members of Central United Methodist Church and leads the church-wide Sunday School class at Central. WALTER SCOTT SPURLING Walter Scott Spurling is a native of Belwood, NC. He graduated from Burns High School in 1985 and Nashville Auto Diesel College in 1986. BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS DOUG BRIDGES It is an honor to serve as a Cleveland County Commissioner. I have been involved in many programs to make our county a better place. Open market for commercial waste haulers is now a reality, ending a one hauler franchise. We now have 16 haulers participating. Economic development from December 2018 to December 2021 was over 265 million and created over 1,000 new jobs. Manufacturing continues to grow, and we hope to focus not only on blue collar but white-collar workers as well. County taxes were cut 3.25 cents, below revenue neutral in 2020. If believing doesn’t determine blessings or cursing, what does? Obedience,

it is the partner of true belief and must reside in a repentant heart. Because of the grace God has given us, many have taken on the world mentality of entitlement because they attend church sometimes, don’t drink smoke dip or chew, nor fool with people who do, they treat people right and help the unfortunate and they have a good reputation in their community, all of this is pretty good stuff but is this God’s stuff? Blessings begin when true obedience starts to take place in our hearts. Men look at the outside, but God looks at the heart and the heart itself can be a very

deceitful thing. We must die to self and truthfully say, “Lord not my will but thy will be done.” How many things in our life help the well-being of others or glorify God, or is our concern, “what’s in it for me?” What do we do with the blessings we receive? Do we squander them selfishly or use them to bless someone else? The truth is we are blessed to be a blessing to others. If we comprehend this, we realize we must plant in order to grow. If we understand the unlimited power that comes from above, we will see that the more we bless, the more blessings we receive. So, we must ask ourselves is

God sovereign and is he the Lord of our lives? Have we grasped the fact that we were made in His image, created to serve Him and that His words are not open to our opinions nor His commands up for debate? How much of your life is guided by Him or do you do what you want and expect Him to agree with you? When is the last time you and the Almighty had a conversation, God promised us blessings through Abraham and the solutions through Moses, to be strong and courageous and don’t depart from the law. Is this your lifestyle? If not, try it and Be Blessed.

Cleveland County Arts Council’s 2022 Garden and Outdoor Living Tour Gardens Are a Work of Art

Jim and Pat Parr 1322 Vista Drive Thirteen years ago, we moved from the Shawangunk Mountains in New York to Shelby. While we loved our new home in this wonderful southern climate, there were a number of issues that needed attention on our property—invasive plants, water flooding, too much lawn, lack of plant diversity, not enough birds and insects and a lack of knowledge on our part, to name a few. For the first two years we studied NC fauna and flora. Then for the past 10 years we have worked to create a sustainable native habitat. We are pleased that our property is now a Certified Native Plant Habitat. To make the property more self-sustainable we added trees, shrubs, a butterfly pollinator garden, vegetable and herb garden, shade garden and perennial flower beds throughout the

property. While it has taken 13 years to create a diverse landscape around our home, it continues to be a joyful work-in-progress. Phil and Sandie Dee 400 Woodhaven Lane, Kings Mountain Phil and Sandie Dee purchased their farm and home in Kings Mountain in 2008. Sandy knew immediately she wanted to find a way to work with Mother Nature to provide a product to benefit the local community. After growing vegetables and herbs for the market for many years, she stumbled into growing flowers in 2018. “When I saw the joy and happiness flowers brought to the community and myself, I set my sights and energy on flowers,” states Sandie. They also grow blueberries, herbs and raise laying hens for eggs. The sunsets are amazing, and the sky is big...it really is almost like the big sky in Montana. Phil and Sandie’s home and farm is an experience unto itself, you will feel as though you are miles from Cleveland

Meeks graduates at GC Friday, seizes pathway to advance career Ernest Meeks had been working as a Puller Locator at HanesBrands, Inc., in Kings Mountain since February 2016. About three years ago, he decided he needed to go back to school to learn machining technology. A bulletin posted at work invited employees to submit an essay to be considered for an apprenticeship program that would enable the chosen apprentice to work while getting a cost-free education. To Meeks, the program seemed to be a pathway to career advancement and an opportunity to increase his salary. He wrote his essay and turned it in the next day. A few months later, he learned he had been selected to join the Gaston College Apprenticeship 321 program. In 2019, he began the apprenticeship and his classes, majoring in Industrial Systems Technology. “When I first started my classes,” said Meeks, “I was nervous— especially when I saw that most of my classmates were younger than my kids. I could tell that I’d been out of school for a while since the others were answering questions much faster than I could. But after a couple of days, it got better, and I was able to get the answers and follow along with everyone else.” He was determined to get good grades, no matter how difficult the courses were. As the only representative of Hanes in the apprenticeship program, he felt an obligation to do well. His hard work has paid off. Meeks will graduate from Gaston College with an Industrial Maintenance Me-

ERNEST MEEKS chanic diploma on May 13. He is now a Maintenance Mechanic at Hanes and will continue in that role with an eye on advancing in the future. Joel Rohrer, Maintenance Supervisor at Hanes and Meeks’ mentor, said, “I am very thankful that Ernest was able to take advantage of the apprenticeship program. This partnership, with grant money paying for his cost of schooling and our company paying Ernest while attending, made it possible for Ernest to advance and excel. Without Apprenticeship 321 this would not have happened. “Ernest has been able to take on more and more responsibility inside of our department,” Rohrer continued, “and it has been very satisfying to observe the growth and personal ownership that Ernest has developed.” Working and going to

school was a challenge to Meeks, but he was determined not to give up. “I would not let my kids see me fail,” he said, “and I was not going to let my work family see me give up.” The apprenticeship program was a highly positive experience for him, and he is especially grateful for the support and encouragement he received from his instructors here at the College. Having been a non-traditional student, Meeks has some advice for those considering attending college. “I encourage you to do so no matter if you’re just getting out of high school or you have been out of high school for 20 years. It is never too early or too late to get an education. You may have obstacles in your way, but you can overcome them to reach your goal in life.”

NC Military Spouse Transition Network helps employees with military spouses In recognition of Friday’s national observance of Military Spouse Appreciation Day, the new NC Military Spouse Transition Network will support State of North Carolina employees seeking similar jobs elsewhere due to their spouse’s redeployment, as well as assist state-employee spouses from other states whose military-member spouse has been redeployed here. Additionally, the State Human Resources Commission (SHRC) has expanded the Veterans Preference Policy to include active members of the North Carolina National Guard, former members with a minimum of six years of creditable service, and the surviving spouse or dependent of a North Carolina National Guard member whose death was service-related. “As the most military-friendly state in the nation, North Carolina is dedicated to ensuring that service members and eligible family members receive support in continuing to provide service to the nation and their new home state,” said Governor Roy Cooper. Barbara Gibson, State Human Resources Director, said the NC Office of State Human Resources (OSHR) is eager to partner with State

of North Carolina agencies and other state governments to facilitate connections for state-employee military spouses “Our state agencies and the University System recognize the skills, experience and dedication of military members, as well as those of resilient spouses eager to continue their own public service careers,” Gibson said. OSHR manages the NC Military Spouse Transition Network, which is a collaboration with the National Association of State Personnel Executive (NASPE). OSHR joins 18 other NASPE member states that have established networks to help connect state-employee spouses to government job opportunities and services, such as resume building, skills translation and informal contacts in the vast scope of state government career fields. “Some military spouses and their families experience

KM beats Crest for Big South baseball title Kings Mountain High’s baseball team won its first conference championship since 2009 last week by splitting its final Big South Conference series with defending champion Crest. The Mountaineers wrapped up the title with a 5-4 win on Tuesday night at Crest before the Chargers got off to a quick start and defeated KM 7-4 in the regular season finale Friday night at Lancaster Field.

The Mountaineers were seeded #3 in the West and were scheduled to host Tuscola in the opening round of the state 3A playoffs last night. A victory would keep them at home for round two, currently scheduled for Friday but that could change because rain is forecasted for the area on Friday. Golfers, Will Spicer Western champs Kings Mountain High’s men’s golf team was in Pinehurst Monday and Tuesday competing for the state 3A championship after winning last week’s Western 3A Regional at Riverbend Golf Course in Shelby.

The Mountaineers shot a 302 to edge Crest with 306 and Stuart Cramer with 307. All three teams qualified for the state championship. Other scores at Riverbend were Freedom 323, Fred T. Foard 325, East

Five join KM Sports Hall of Fame Five former Kings Mountain High athletes – including some that went on to good careers on the collegiate level - were inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame at its 35th annual awards ceremony Saturday night at Central United Methodist Church. The current class which includes the late Jim Cloninger, Sheryl Goode, Tandra Leftwich, Mariko Feemster and Tony Young brings the total number of inductees to 145 over the Hall’s 35year history which began in 1988. Cloninger was a twosport all-conference star with the Mountaineers in the 1960s and more particularly in the 1964-65 school year when he helped lead the school to championships in both football and basket-

ball. He was an outstanding end and punter for the ’64 Mountaineer football team which is the only team in the school’s 99-year history to finish the regular season undefeated. He played in the prestigious Boys Home AllStar game in Greenville, NC and made the starting team as an end and punter for the Appalachian State Mountaineers as a freshman. Cloninger, who passed away in 1988, was heavily involved with the KMHS athletic program after college. He served as president of the KMHS Booster Club and was a member of the Hall of Fame committee for several years and was also a spotter in the press box at football games. Kings Mountain High’s men’s track team dominated the annual Big South 3A Conference meet last week at Stuart Cramer High School, racking up 205 points to easily outdistance second place South Point with 113.5 points. “It was a true team effort getting points in all areas,” said veteran Coach Rayvis Key who was voted Coach of the Year. The Mountaineers advance to the Western Regional Meet Saturday, May 14 at Enka High School and from there hope to send a lot of participants to the State meet. Kings Mountain’s women also had a very strong showing in the BSC meet, finishing a close second to Stuart Cramer 144136. South Point ran third with 127. Both Kings Mountain teams won numerous first places. The Mountaineers had 11 participants to make All-Conference, including: D’Andre Hoyle in the long jump and triple jump. Nicholas Harrison in the pole vault.

sity. She is now assistant principal at KMHS. Bridges pointed out that Leftwich was all-conference three years running, and capped off her prep career by winning the NCHSAA diving championship. She was a setter in volleyball and infielder in softball. “As setter, she was like a point guard,” she said. “I knew she would be a leader. She was a competitor and couldn’t stand to lose. “She was a great softball player here, and then a great softball and volleyball player at Gardner-Webb. She transitioned to fast-pitch at Gardner-Webb and was Conference Player of the Year. She was all-conference in volleyball and softball for three years at

Gardner-Webb. “She wanted to be the Female Athlete of the Year (at KMHS) so she took up swimming. She preferred diving instead of swimming laps. The defending state champion was from East Rutherford so she knew what she had to do to beat her. She spent the entire Christmas holidays, every day going to the pool to practice diving. She’s one of the best competitors I’ve ever seen.” Leftwich said she never intended to be the state diving champ. “I just wanted to be Senior Athlete of the Year.” But, those holidays at the pool paid off. “I felt like there’s always going to be someone better than you, so you better practice,” Leftwich

said. “I lost the regionals by one-tenth of a point and decided I was going to be the best at least in 3A. I worked hard. What a life lesson she (Bridges) taught me and what our coaches teach every day.” Kings Mountain High seniors receiving Hall of Fame scholarships were DJ Black, Sally Ozmore, BreAnn Jenkins, Cooper Putnam, Jonah Patrick, Jacie Jarvis, Parker Key, Saniya Wilson, Peyton Fisher and Kofi Boakye. The Distinguished Service Award recipient was Gerald Byers and the 2008 state champion KMHS 4x200 relay team received the Special Achievement Award.

at KMHS in the early 90s, was inducted by his coach, Steve Moffitt, and a large number of his teammates came from miles away to celebrate the moment with him. Moffitt pointed out that Young posted 112 wins during a time when schools couldn’t wrestle but twice a week and had only 30 matches a year if they went to the state finals. “Now,” he said, “people are wrestling well over 60 times a year. I doubt that Tony’s career record will ever be broken in the same number of matches. During Tony’s time we won a record three conference championships and seven regional championships (four team and three individual). I doubt that record will ever be broken either.” Moffitt noted that Young won the regional titles beginning his sophomore year. The only regular season match the team lost was to East Gaston, which was a 4A power at the time. “Three of our studs weren’t at the match,” Moffitt noted. “I said we’re not going to lose again. “In 1992 we were getting ready to break a record as no team had ever won three in a row and all the opposing coaches at the tournament were saying ‘Anybody but Kings Mountain.’ We ended up winning that year, too.” Young, who because of health problems could not stand for long, was able to get to the front of the stage to accept his award. “Thank you. I’m not big on words but I want to thank everyone that inducted me and watched me wrestle,” he said Feemster was one of a host of players from the late Ron Massey’s KM football teams in the late 1990s that went on to play on the collegiate level. Many of them were present to see him inducted by Leann Farquharson, daughter of former KM Coach Dave Farquharson who was unable to attend due to recent surgeries. “It is an honor to do this for dad,” she said. “He coached Mariko since his time at Grover Elementary School and got to coach him at Kings Mountain High School.” She pointed out that Feemster had 33 pancake blocks his last two years at KMHS. Feemster received a full scholarship to the University of North Car-

Goode said as a youngster her parents wanted her to play the piano and had her taking lessons. “But I just couldn’t do it. My teacher called them and said ‘Sheryl doesn’t want to play the piano, she wants to play basketball.’ ” Her parents gave in and she followed in her brother Demetris’ footsteps and became a good high school and collegiate basketball player. “I want to thank Coach Brinkley who motivated me and showed us how to be a champion,” she said. “He was an awesome basketball coach.” Leftwich, who was inducted by one of her high school coaches Dianna Bridges, was a three-sport standout at KMHS and Gardner-Webb Univer-

olina and saw playing time as a freshman before health problems ended his career. “Coach Farquharson loved our size and started working with us at Grover School,” Feemster said about several outstanding linemen on those late ’90 teams. “He was like a second father to us. He’d give you the shirt off his back. I love Coach Farquharson.” “In high school Aubrey Hollifield was a great coach that really helped us and made us hate that high school named Shelby,” Feemster said, drawing a house full of laughter as Hollifield was sitting in the audience to support his former player. “He really showed us how to lift weights. Anytime we’d walk into that weight room he’d really work us.” He recognized many other members of that offensive line in the audience, including Andy Leigh, Kareem Marshall and Julius Curry. Marshall and Curry were previously inducted into the Hall. “I’ve known Andy Leigh since we were five,” he noted. “He did whatever he had to do for the team. Frank Hopper (who was not present) lived right down the street from me and he always wanted to be perfect. It was tons of fun playing with Marshall. He always had a story to tell. Julius Curry has probably been my buddy for the longest time. We’d just hang around and get in trouble. I always wanted to compete with my buddies. We all wanted to be in the fight.” Sheryl Goode became the second member of her athletic family to join the HOF, joining her brother Demetris Goode who was inducted in 2018. She was inducted by her high school basketball coach, David Brinkley. “Sheryl was always tall and her wing spread was unbelievable,” he said. “That was her strength. Her only weakness starting out was free throw shooting so during practice we started doing suicides if you missed free throws. She became a good free throw shooter and we started winning a lot of games. I don’t remember losing another game on missed free throws. “She was a joy to coach. She went on to Johnson C. Smith and helped them make the 1985 NCAA playoffs. Her senior year she led them in scoring and free throw percentage.”

Boy Scout Troop 92 backpacks Appalachian Trail of night navigation, setting up camp, and a good night’s rest, the Scouts hiked and explored the highlands of Mount Rogers.

Fifteen Scouts and eight leaders travelled to Mount Rogers, TN for winter backpacking in the snow. After several miles

On their outing, they experienced subzero windchill and 2–4-inch snowfall overnight. At points along the Appalachian Trail, the Troop was treated to a visit from some of the wild ponies that live at that ele-

vation. Sunday morning, the Troop trekked down the mountain, stopped for pizza at Jammin Jays, and had a message from the Chaplains Aid afterwards. Boy Scout Troop 92 meets locally on Monday nights.
