Streetscape project update By Loretta Cozart While work continues at the site of the Streetscape project in downtown Kings Mountain, the work behind the scenes continues as challenges with the original plan are being addressed. The Streetscape project began on April 11, and over the next few weeks what Greene Building Corporation (GBC) found beneath the asphalt and dirt was a spaghetti situation of water and gas pipes, electrical conduit, and stormwater pipes not shown on the original maps they were working from. As a result, GBC had to step back and assess the situation as work at the site continued. By week three, City of Kings Mountain removed the stoplight and pole at the corner of Mountain and Cherokee Streets and a new
transformer was installed on Cherokee Street behind the police station. While digging exploratory holes for catch basins, fiber lines were also found in the area. Additionally, issues with the stormwater system were identified and those also issues needed to be addressed. So, GBC began a redesign of the stormwater system keeping all the challenges discovered in mind. Last week, the team met with AT&T to discuss relocating their existing fiber services in the area, as GBC continued work on the stormwater system installation. Upcoming work includes curb and gutter, conduit work, and stormwater “While water, gas, and electrical can be rerouted, the stormwater system See STREETSCAPE, Page 8A

convert the space into a fully operational snack food manufacturing facility starting in 2022. The current 125,000 square foot facility can be expanded to 200,000 square feet and is expected to add over 115 local jobs. The new Kings Mountain facility will support the increased and growing demand for Utz’s brands
in the Southeast, Northeast and Mid-South regions. The new facility contains state of the art high-speed pork rind manufacturing lines and will enable multi-line production across Utz’s key sub-categories soon. Operationalizing the recently constructed Kings Mountain facility is quicker and more cost-effective than building from the ground up or renovating an existing facility. Benestar will also become a supplier of pork pellets from its Chicago operations to Utz. The Transaction
is expected to be accretive to earnings within 12-18 months due to the expected strong supply chain cost savings. “With continued growth and excitement for our snack food brands, we are very excited to expand our roots in North Carolina, where we will be adding over 115 new jobs over time,” said Cary Devore, Chief Operating Officer, Utz Brands, Inc. “This is a strong step forward in optimizing our plant and logistics network, and it will allow us See UTZ, Page 2A

TODAY’S QUOTE:
With self-discipline most anything is possible. –Theodore Roosevelt
Pieces of Kings Mountain History Sometimes laughing can turn something difficult into something LORETTA more tolerCOZART able. That is what Cobb Lathi of Uncommon Artisans is doing at her shop. On April 30, Lathi posted a photo of a large piece of construction equipment parked at her front door. The post stated, “It’s going to be a beautiful weekend to come out and see the new sculpture in front of our store! We call it “CAT” - with bright yellow paint and red dirt accents, this is a MUST see!”
“The artistic creators of our ‘CAT’ also left us a large selection of holes, trenches and pipes available to anyone to see and interact with.” “All that being said, tongue and cheek, please be careful as you walk around West Mountain Street, and (know) that UnCommon Artisans is open during the city’s Streetscape project.” To add to the levity, Lathi has begun a weekly naming contest of the “Functional Sculpture” this week. It was decided that CAT needs a better moniker, since it’s going to be there for a while. The post went on to explain, “Here’s what
we’re going to do.... every week, we are going to source a new nickname for our CAT. You, dear citizens, are going to provide us with the name choices. Simply write it on our snazzy scrap paper while you are in the store and drop it into our beanpot.” “We’ll draw a name every Sunday morning. The winner will get a coupon for a free cup of coffee or cold brew and bragging rights. Henceforth, the CAT will be referred by that name for the week,” the post concluded. Most shop owners on the street agree that the result of this inconve-

Photo Cobb Lathi nience is that their street will become the showplace of Kings Mountain, drawing in shoppers and those who want a glimpse of what downtown is soon to become thanks to the investment of our community. Don’t forget about
the downtown business in the next few months. Support them through this challenging time. Parking spaces are available in the Cherokee Street parking lot and there is a sidewalk to easily access Mountain Street beside 133 West. Remember to
shop local and support local businesses as the city works to make Kings Mountain a better place for all to work, play and live. So get our creative juices flowing and give the CAT a name…. if you are up for the challenge!

We’ve all heard of people who have taken their lives by suicide. Glenn Mollette We typGuest Editorial ically wonder why? We wonder what was so bad about their lives that they could not cope another day? We were shocked by the sudden death of Naomi Judd. She was a country music star and legend. She and her daughter, Wynonna had racked up 14 number one hits. They had five Grammy awards and 20 million-plus album sales. A new tour was planned for this Fall and the day after her death an induction ceremony was scheduled for the Country Music Hall of Fame. She apparently had it all. She had a long-term 30year marriage, successful daughters and fame and fortune. What more could a human being want? Apparently, something was still wrong. Depression and mental illness apparently can become a hole so deep and so dark that once someone is in it, they don’t feel they are emotionally able to survive or escape the darkness. We have been shocked by other personalities who reportedly took their lives such as

comedian Robin Williams and celebrity food writer Anthony Bourdain who traveled the world tasting and showing various lifestyles and cuisines. Mental illness comes in various forms and affects people in different ways and on different levels. Everyone has down days, the blahs and feelings of unhappiness. The weather affects us. Rainy or snowy days may eventually get to us. Too many bills and not enough money to pay them can work on our minds. A sick or troubled family member may worry us or make us feel bad. Our own personal health battles can make us feel down. Too much to do is troubling. Terminal illness that is rapidly getting worse puts us in a state of desperation to escape the outcome sooner rather than later. There is more to depression than snapping our fingers to get out of it, as proven by Judd. She openly talked about her illness. She wrote a book about it and reportedly had spent years medically dealing with her diseases. Severe mental illness can end sadly end tragically. Reviewing her life, it seems there would be a counter argument for everything we are supposed to do. Get help. Take medication. Have a good doctor and a good counselor. Talk about

the disease. Find meaningful things to do. Have hobbies. Stay busy. Pursue life. Be involved in meaningful relationships, have faith in God, etc. Judd appeared to do all of this and more. Does this mean we have no hope if we have mental illness? We always have hope but we must be very aware of the seriousness of depression. Our mental state is serious and can be terminal. Keep in mind that people successfully deal with mental illness every day. It does not have to be the end. People seek counsel, medical help, faith in God and find coping solutions to dealing with depression and mental illness. Mental illness does not have to end badly. Try to think of those left behind. Try to think about the spouse, the children and the loved ones who are left to go on. I have known people who were so physically sick that I understood their pain and desire to escape their bodies. Try to keep in mind that God made us and we all have an appointment with death. We don’t have to push the appointment. It’s coming to us all. Try to find a way to find purpose and peace with the brief life God has given to you. It will end soon enough.

SASi features Alex Pietersen, Photography in Motion Southern Arts Society’s newest exhibit “Photography In Motion” last week featuring the photography of Alex Pietersen. Much like the title of his exhibit, Alex Pietersen has always been a man “In Motion.” From travel, to tennis, to carpentry and home renovation, to his daily photographic outings, Alex is forever on the go. Those who know him best often comment that he never sits still. Alex Pietersen’s life experiences have defined his motion and evolution. Pietersen, who is a native of HOLLAND, was first inspired by the Rotterdam harbor and windmills near his home. His early works zoomed into close-up abstracts of his environment emphasizing line and texture rather than complete views. He dabbled with photography as a sailor on the Holland American Lines capturing the faces and experiences of life at sea in black and white. In 1974 Alex packed up his photographic equipment and moved to the United States where he continued to work in black and white photography, all the while stretching his photographic skills. He used his photographic skill commercially before his busy experimentations led him to invent a unique color photographic technique. That technique combined color and movement in a single camera shot without the use of computers. The movement these bold images reflected parallels his own life in motion. After inventing this revolutionary photographic technique in 1978, Alex began to focus his work largely in the commercial and advertising worlds. This technique and his commercial successes earned Alex artistic recognition, as he garnered numerous awards, honors, and an invitation to be part of “The Colors of Invention” Expo at the Smith-

ing in the color photography technique he invented, along with an array of commercial publications. Work shown in the Reavis Gallery features Alex’s nature and travel photography, where he often finds the unexpected image in a traditional scene. The photos are all printed in limited editions and available to purchase. A reception for "Photography In Motion” was held on Saturday May 14 from 6-8 pm to meet Mr. Pietersen. The exhibit will be on view through June 10, 2022.

Blessings or Cursing -Your Choice Part 3 T a k e delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. C o m Rev. John Houze mit your People’s Baptist Church ways to the Lord; trust in Him and He will act.” Ps.37:4-5 We often get frustrated when people behave wrongly yet, they thrive and we on the other hand are doing all we can to survive. We may even think of patterning
our lives after them because the trials in our lives appear to be cursed. If the truth be told most of us have had these thoughts but thank God, we are not overtaken by temptation. Psalms 37 was written by one who had succumbed to his desires and understood the devastation it could cause. He gives instruction on how to avoid the disappointment of the wrong desire. He begins by telling us to delight ourselves in the Lord, but first, you must know Him as Lord; the One with great power and authority and be willing to submit to that power and authority. This is achieved only by having the right understanding and
relationship with God. In Luke 6:46, Jesus asks a question, “why do you call me Lord and do not what I say?” Do you obey his word? Next, what are the desires of your heart? Your desires must be powered by Him and can be, if we surrender it to Him; then His desires will be our desires. We can’t achieve this on our own because our hearts are deceitful and wicked by nature. Think of the times when you unexpectedly had an impure thought. That’s why it’s best that we commit our ways to Him. Remember, we only have a snapshot of our life, but He has a panoramic view. The question is will we sub-
mit to him? To answer this ask yourself how much do you trust the One who gives and sustains life, who is our Creator and the One whose Son died for our sins. Sometimes we find it easier to trust a pilot at 30,000 feet in the air; a person we know nothing about; we don’t know their character or qualifications, but it doesn’t stop us from getting on that plane. Blessings are ours if we take pleasure in Jesus and trust Him. He has promised to give us our heart’s desire, if we wait on Him, He is faithful to act. Remember, the blessings are in Him, not us, and it’s your choice. Be Blessed!

Mountaineers defeat Tuscola, lose to Carson in 3A playoffs Kings Mountain High’s first championship baseball season since 2009 came to an end Thursday when the Mountaineers fell to Jesse Carson 3-1 in the second round of the NCHSAA 3A playoffs. The Mountaineers, who edged Waynesville Tuscola 4-3 in the opening round last Tuesday, accomplished their championship season with just three seniors on the team. A host of juniors and sophomores who either started all season or made major contributions will return next season. In each of their playoff games, the Mountaineers built an early lead but saw their opponent stage a big comeback. In their opening win over Tuscola, the Mountaineers scored all four of their runs in the first inning to offset a 1-0 Tuscola start, but they had to hold off the visitors after they scored two runs
in the fifth to cut the margin to 4-3. Wyatt Davis came on in the fifth to halt the visitors’ rally after they scored two runs on four hits and still had the bases loaded. A fly ball to right ended the inning. Davis struck out four over the final two frames to earn the save. Zane Brockman started for the Mountaineers and struck out the first two Tuscola batters before surrendering back-to-back walks, followed by a run-scoring single to left by Hayden Driver. After the first two KM batters went down on fly balls to open the bottom of the first, Brockman singled to right and Maddox Brown and Chase Ellis reached on errors to put KM up 2-1. Cole Irby and Peyton Fisher ripped back-to-back doubles to make it 4-1. Brockman singled to lead off the third but the Moun-
taineers couldn’t capitalize and that would be their last hit of the game. In the fifth, they loaded the bases on an error, walk and hit batsman but the visitors were able to get out of the inning on a strikeout and two fly balls. Tuscola had cut the margin to 4-3 in the top of the fifth on three singles and a double. They also left the bases loaded. Brockman finished with seven strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings. Davis came on to get the final out and then struck out four over the final two frames. One of KM’s three seniors, pitcher Charlie Melton, retired the first 10 Jesse Carson batters he faced on Thursday night. The Mountaineers had taken a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a single to left by Cole Irby, a passed ball and a single to right by Brown. The Mountaineers missed a good scoring
opportunity in the fourth when Jacob Hamrick and Brockman led off with back-to-back singles but the Mountaineers would eventually leave the bases loaded. The visitors started their comeback in the fifth, tying the game at 1-all without the benefit of a hit. Three KM errors were the culprit. Kings Mountain missed good scoring opportunities in the fifth and sixth innings. A hit batsman, single by Hamrick and a passed ball had runners on second and third but Casey Crawford came in from the bullpen to get Brockman on a grounder to end the threat. The Mountaineers put down a potential Carson rally in the top of the sixth inning when right fielder Bebe Moore made what was probably the play of the year. Fisher got Efird on a grounder to second to open the top of the seventh, but with rain coming down it became harder to control the ball. Sam Safrit singled and after a strikeout Hunter Burris doubled to left-center and Keegan Barger walked to load the bases. An error on what had become a very wet field allowed the two winning runs to score. The Mountaineers drew two walks sandwiched around two strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh but a fly ball to center ended the game and the season.

The local American Legion World Series committee is pleased to announce that the popular 7th Inning Stretch Festival is returning to Uptown Shelby after a two-year absence caused by the COVID-19 virus. The Festival is sponsored by The American Legion Department of North Carolina. This year’s headliner concert will feature country music artist Josh Turner, a native of South Carolina, and a multi-platinum-selling star. For nearly two decades, he has been one of country music’s most recognizable voices, selling more than 8.5 million units and amassing more than 2.5 billion global streams. His wife Jennifer plays keyboards and sings background vocals with the band. In December 2001 Turner made his debut at the Grand Ole Opry and received a standing ovation for his original song “Long Black Train.” His album by the same name was certified gold within a year of its release; the song spent more than 40 weeks on the Billboard country charts. In addition to “Long Black Train,” fans can expect to hear Turner’s other big hits: “Your Man,” “Would You Go with Me,” “Firecracker,” “Why Don’t We Just Dance,” “Time is Love” (named by Billboard
JOSH TURNER as the biggest hit of 2012), and “Hometown Girl.” Turner attributes his appreciation of country music to five country music legends – John Anderson, Johnny Cash, Vern Gosdin, Randy Travis, and Hank Williams. In his official biography, he says, “I’ve always said that any song you hear coming from my voice, you’re going to hear bits and pieces of those five guys.” Turner paid tribute to those five and other artists in his album, “Country State of Mind,” released in 2020. Turner has received six Inspirational Country Music Awards and has been nominated for two Grammy® Awards, five Country Music Association Awards, two Academy of Country Music Awards, and one CMT Award. A secondary stage with local performers will feature Tangerine Trees, a Beatles tribute band, and two other groups. The Giggle Box Circus will perform and living statues will interact with the crowd. Gymnasts, kids’ crafts, two inflatables manned by Cleveland County YMCA staff, stilt walkers, mascots from local athletic teams, and more, will mean twice
as many activities for the younger set than in any other year. The Road to Hope 5K will once again kick off the 7th Inning Stretch Festival. The proceeds from race registrations will go to Road to Hope Shelby, which passes the funds to programs that include Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS), Kids Camp, Young Adult Camp, Outward Bound, college scholarships, retreats, training and counseling, equipment grants, and The Spirit of Blue Foundation. The Little Miss ALWS Pageant has become increasingly popular since its inception as part of the Festival in 2015. Girls from infants through 12 years old compete for nine positions as queens, each one assigned to a regional team as a goodwill ambassador. “After two years without the Festival because of COVID-19 concerns, we are excited to bring back the event that is our thank you to the community for its support of The American Legion World Series,” says Eddie Holbrook, chairman of the local ALWS committee. “We believe we have a lineup that will please every attendee from the youngest to the oldest and music that will brighten everyone’s day.” For a list of Festival events and times, visit http://7thinningstretchfestival.cc or call 704-6006599.

Two-year-old first up in local COVID-19 vaccine trial Arvind did not shed a tear when he got his blood drawn and received his first shot for the trial on May 9. “He was so brave and calm!” said his mother, Rupal. “We could not be more excited for him to be doing this.” She watched in awe and said, “I’ve been waiting so long for a vaccine to come out for somebody of Arvind’s age. The other important thing to me is contributing to scientific progress. I feel confident that this vaccine is safe, and it has the potential to protect him, our family and other people from getting COVID-19.” Although they do not know right now if Arvind received the vaccine or the placebo, Rupal can’t wait to tell her son one day that he made a difference thanks to this opportunity with Levine Children’s. Atrium Health Levine Children’s is the first and only site in the Charlotte area to offer the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine study to healthy children ages six months to under five years old. The study is evaluating safety, tolerability and immune response to the vaccine in this young population. The vaccine being studied is the same one that has been authorized for people ages five and older, adjusted to a lower dose. The study is taking place around the country, and local enrollment has happened quickly since there is an urgent demand for a safe, effective vaccine for this age group. “Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of people have been living with a great deal of worry. Parents have been waiting very anxiously because there is currently no way to protect our youngest children,” says Christine Turley, MD, vice chair for research at Levine Children’s and principal investigator for the Charlotte trial. “But this vaccine study is a hopeful one. It gives families and children the ability
Two-year-old, Arvind, with his parents. Photo Atrium Health to become part of history.” The families, who choose to enroll their children, are a part of the pivotal three-dose, lowdose vaccine study. “We’re building on the strong safety profile that exists for adults and older children. We will be studying how well a lower dose works for young children in providing the level of protection they need,” Dr. Turley says. “We have every reason to believe this study will show the vaccine to be a strong option to offer children protection against the COVID-19 virus.” “I’m so grateful for Levine Children’s and everything that they do,” Rupal says. “They’ve provided Arvind excellent care throughout his two years of life. And they’re doing amazing things, like bringing this clinical trial here, so we’re very fortunate to have them in the Charlotte area.”

Some Long COVID may be a disability, CDC says On May 9, Centers for Disease Control issued information regarding the impacts of COVID on some individuals. Most people with COVID-19 get better within a few days to a few weeks after infection. Some people can experience long-term effects from their infection, known as post-COVID conditions or long COVID. People with postCOVID conditions can have a wide range of symptoms that can last weeks, months, or years. Sometimes the symptoms will go away but return later. People who experience post-COVID conditions most commonly report: General symptoms • Tiredness or fatigue that interferes with daily life • Symptoms that get worse after physical or mental effort (also known as “post-exertional malaise”)
• Fever • Respiratory and heart symptoms • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath • Cough • Chest pain • Fast-beating or pounding heart (also known as heart palpitations) Neurological symptoms • Difficulty thinking or concentrating (sometimes referred to as “brain fog”) • Headache • Sleep problems • Dizziness when you stand up (lightheadedness) • Pins-and-needles feelings • Change in smell or taste • Depression or anxiety Digestive symptoms • Diarrhea • Stomach pain Other symptoms • Joint or muscle pain • Rash • Changes in menstrual cycles Post-COVID conditions are found more often
in people who had severe COVID-19 illness, but anyone who has been infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 can experience post-COVID conditions. There is no test to diagnose post-COVID conditions, and symptoms could come from other health problems. This can make it difficult for healthcare providers to recognize post-COVID conditions. Your healthcare provider considers a diagnosis of post-COVID conditions based on your health history, including if you had a diagnosis of COVID-19 either by a positive test or by symptoms or exposure, as well as doing a health examination. “Long COVID,” also known as post-COVID conditions, can be considered a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Cleveland County home closing costs rank 73% highest in state By Loretta Cozart In a study conducted by SmartAssets, Cleveland County ranked 73% highest in NC closing costs for homes out of one hundred counties. Closing costs are determined various fees including Origination Fees; Services you cannot shop for, like appraisal fee, credit
report fee, and flood certification: Services you can shop for like title services, home inspection, postage/ courier, survey, attorney, and miscellaneous other charges; Taxes and government fees; Prepaids like homeowner’s fees, Mortgage insurance, Escrow of property taxes; and Owner’s title insurance. According to the study,
purchasing a $120,000 dollar home in Cleveland County costs homeowners an average of $3,211. By comparison, buying a $238,000 home in Mecklenburg County costs approximately $3,859 dollars, a difference of $648 difference for double the value of the home. To calculate closing costs, SmartAssets assumed
a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage on each county’s median home value and a 20% down payment. We considered various applicable closing costs, including the mortgage tax, transfer tax and both fixed and variable fees.
Once they calculated the typical closing costs in each county, they divided that figure by the county’s median home value. This calculation determined closing costs as a percentage of median home value in each county. Finally, they calcu-
lated a closing costs index based on the criteria above. Counties where closing costs accounted for the smallest percentage of the median home value ranked highest on the index.

Some CCS busses involved in national recall By Loretta Cozart In 2019, Carolina-Thomas Built Buses announced that it is voluntarily recalling 53,528 school buses because their seats, which were manufactured by SynTec Seating Solutions, may not meet federal regulations for leg protection in the event of a crash. Cleveland County Schools has 44 Saf-T-Liner C2 busses that were part of the national recall. CCS’ Director of Transportation, David Pless, spoke with the Herald on Monday, “Of the 44 busses in our fleet involved in the recall, 42 have already been repaired. We reached out to Carolina-Thomas, the company in charge of those repairs, and they are coming out this week to repair the remaining two busses.” On May 12, a Charlotte Mecklenburg School bus was involved in an accident with a dumptruck and 17 students were injured and subsequently sent to the hospital. Thomas Bus said that styrene blocks in certain Syntec S3B and SCR RTR seats in model-years 2014 through 2020 Saf-T-Liner C2, SafT-Liner EFX and Minotour school buses don’t meet Fed-
eral Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 222. The school bus OEM added that there have been no reports of injuries as a result. Thomas Bus filed its report with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigations on Oct. 4. The school bus manufacturer said it will begin notifying dealers and customers on Dec. 2 of fixes to be made free of charge. The issue arose in March 2019 when Transport Canada tested four seats for knee foam impact. Two of the seats failed, and the country’s regulatory agency notified the school bus manufacturer, which then launched an investigation alongside Syntec. During a teardown of the Transport Canada seats, the companies found indications that there were variations of the position of the knee styrene blocks to the seat frame and that the seats were not

in compliance with Section 5.3.2 of FMVSS 222. “The seats may have been manufactured with styrene blocks that may not provide sufficient impact absorption in certain specific areas around the steel seat frame of the back support,” Thomas Bus said in a written statement. Thomas Bus said Syntec began a design change in August to improve the resisting force of the styrene blocks. Additional impact material will also be installed on the seats between the rebond back and the vinyl back cover. Thomas Bus said the repairs performed by authorized Daimler Trucks North America service facilities can be made without taking the buses out of service.
