Police Chief Gerald Childress began new position Monday

DIRTY GRASS SOUL By Loretta Cozart On Friday, August 26, the City of Kings Mountain announced the selection of their newest Police Chief, Gerald Childress, who succeeds Chief Lisa Proctor. Childress served as the Administrative Lieutenant for the Town of Spindale. Prior to that, he served as the Deputy Chief of the Town of Mooresville for two years after a lengthy career with the Mooresville PoliceChildressDepartment.hasa Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Psychology from Lenoir-Rhyne University and a Master of Arts in Justice Administration from Methodist University. A statement from the City of Kings Mountain shared that Chief Childress is excited to join the Kings Mountain Police Department and the Kings MountainWithcommunity.over26 years in municipal law and extensive administrative experience, he brings solid leadership to the Kings Mountain team. Chief Childress will report to the City Manager, Marilyn Sellers. The Childress family will be re-locating to the City of Kings Mountain from Newton.

Community Eligibility Schools (CEP) receive breakfast and lunch free of charge. In Kings Mountain and Grover, the following elementary schools meet this requirement: Bethware Elementary School, East Elementary School, Grover Elementary School, and North Elementary School. Section 104(a) of the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 amended the National School Lunch Act to provide an alternative to household eligibility applications for free and reduced-price meals in high poverty districts and schools. The overall purpose of the CEP is to improve access to nutritious meals for students in high poverty areas by providing meals to all students “at no cost” to the students. Students enrolled in a non-CEP school who eats meals while visiting a CEP school automatically qualify for free breakfast and lunch.

On Thursday, August 18, at 11:05 am, Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement was notified of a positive rabies specimen that was sent to the North Carolina State Lab on Wednesday, August 17, 2022.On Sunday, August 14, a passing motorist came upon a raccoon on Downey Place off Gardner Park Drive and Club Drive in Gastonia, NC. The motorist believed the raccoon was injured and transported it to the Carolina Wildlife Conservation Center. The raccoon died on Monday, August 15, 2022. On Wednesday, August 17, 2022, Carolina Wildlife sent the raccoon to Griffin Laboratory in Monroe, NC to be processed. A rabies specimen was sent to the North Carolina State Lab for testing. The raccoon tested positive for Animalrabies.Care and Enforcement notified the motorist that picked up the raccoon and completed a neighborhood canvas in the area of Downey Place in Gastonia, NC to notify the community of the positive rabies result and to verify rabies vaccinations for family animals in the area. Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement also notified the Gaston County Department Health and Human Services.The Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement stresses the importance of having an upto-date rabies vaccination for all your pets. By keeping your pet’s current on their rabies vaccines, you are protecting them from contracting the disease from wildlife and spreading the disease to your family and other animals, and people in the community. Furthermore, it is important to never handle or transport sick wildlife. The animal could have rabies. Gaston County residents should contact Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement to capture and transport sick wildlife.

On August 8, the N.C. Department of Transportation closed a road in Cleveland County for about nine months for a construction project. Last week, Metcalf Road was closed in both directions near West Grove Road for the construction of a new bridge that will carry traffic over the U.S. 74 Bypass. During construction, traffic will be detoured to West Ross Grove Road, North Lafayette Street, North Dekalb Street and West Zion Church Road to return to Metcalf Road. Visiting W. Mountain Street on Wednesday, August 24, the Herald could see progress as Streetscape continues. The panoramic photo shows sidewalks on the south side of the street are almost complete. By the next day, light posts were in place on both sides of the street, with several in place beside Premier Body Armor and other businesses in the 100 block of W. Mountain Street. On the north side of the road, concrete had been poured in front of UnCommon Artisans. By the next day, the owner had signs out that the shop was open for business.Near the intersection of Mountain Street at Battleground Avenue, work crews cleaned up gravel from the roadway. Planters on either side of the road will be filled with dirt and mulch added. Plantings, including trees, will not be added until the fall. While an exact date has not been issued by the city, merchants are encouraged that the road will be open soon.Up the block, at Mountain Holiday, a placard out front of the shop reminding the community the need to shop local.

Regardless of which end of the business spectrum you find yourself, we can all benefit from being still and resting in theOneLord.of my favorite verses I read or meditate on frequently is this, “Be still, and know that I am God.; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:10). To be sure, we must be reminded to remove ourselves from our current predicament and focus on the Lord. Only when I calm my mind and heart and focus on the Lord am I adequately equipped to evaluate my situation or allow God to handle it. In part, to be still and know God means for us to think and pray profoundly concerning who God is and how God is active in our lives. For this reason, the beginning of Psalm 46 declares, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though the water roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging” (Psalm 46:1-3). After reading and believing that God is our refuge and strength, we can be still and know He is God. This week, let’s make a common goal: read Psalm 46 and meditate on these words. Think about God’s attributes and activities in our lives. As a worship pastor, one of my responsibilities is to evaluate music and incorporate the songs into the theme of our different morning services. One of the most popular themes of new music deals with being still, allowing God to speak, and trusting in Him. I conclude my final August article with the words of a modern hymn. NO FRILLS POUND CAKE Wilma Hoyle 1 cup Crisco 2 ½ cups sugar 4 eggs 3 cups flour 1 cup milk 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. salt 1 ½ tsp. vanilla 3 tsp. lemon flavoring Cream sugar and Crisco together. Add eggs one at a time, beating between each. Mix flour, salt, and baking powder with milk. Add vanilla and lemon flavoring. Pour into a greased and floured tube or Bundt pan. GOLF BALLS Chris Scruggs 1 stick margarine 1 pkg. chopped dates (8 oz.) 1 small can coconut 1 cup brown sugar 1 6 oz. pkg. pecans 2 cups Rice Krispies Melt butter and sugar and cook 5 minutes. Add dates and cook 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Add pecans, coconut, and Rice Krispies. Form into balls and roll in powdered sugar.
Dip each slice in buttermilk, salt lightly, roll in cornmeal mix. Place in shallow baking pan which contains a thin layer of oil. Bake at 400 degrees until golden brown. Turn and brown other side. Place on absorbent towels if oil seems excessive.

According to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center, there is now an average of 78 sex trafficking cases every year in North Carolina, and Charlotte is the number one city. But the region also plays into this statistic, due to the highway corridors leading into the city, including i-85 and U.S. 74. As the U.S. anti-trafficking movement has grown in their understanding of this diverse and complex crime, they are learning more about how specific people, such as medical professionals, teachers, truck drivers, and restaurant personnel, in addition to friends and family members, can help identify and report possible trafficking. Everyone can help by learning the types of trafficking and paying attention to the people around them.
HowLureTraffickersPeopleIn Stories become weapons in the hands of human traffickers — tales of romantic love everlasting or about good jobs and fair wages just over the horizon. Sometimes, the stories themselves raise red flags. Other times, traffickers or potential traffickers may raise red flags during recruitment.Hereare a few situations that might raise concerns:
Sex trafficking occurs when individuals are made to perform commercial sex through force, fraud, or coercion. Any child under 18 who is involved in commercial sex is legally a victim of trafficking, regardless of whether there is a third party involved.

Anyone can experience trafficking in any community, just as anyone can be the victim of any kind of crime. While it can happen to anyone, evidence suggests that people of color and LGBTQ+ people are more likely to experience trafficking than other demographic groups. Generational trauma, historic oppression, discrimination, and other societal factors and inequities create community-wide vulnerabilities. The defense held the Cougars to another three and out and the KM took over with just 5:15 remaining. Led by the running of Feemster and Ward and a 10-yard reception by Sanders, the Mountaineers ran the clock down to 51 seconds before Asheville intercepted a pass. But it was too little, too Thelate. Backed up on their 10-yard line following a Curtis Simpson sack, the Cougars had to punt and it traveled just 19 yards and KM took over on Asheville’s 33 yard line. A roughing the passer flag on the Cougars gave KM a first down at the 22 and an 11-yard pass from Lamont Littlejohn to Bryson Brown and three rushes by Teddy Jeffries put the Mountaineers into the end zone. Jaden Ellis’ PAT made it 7-0 with 7:24 left in the half. With 44 seconds left on the first half clock, Simpson blocked a punt and KM took over on the Asheville 17. Three KM passes fell incomplete, but Ellis came on to boot a 34-yard field goal to send the Mountaineers into halftime with a 10-0 lead. The flags didn’t fly as much in the second half and the Mountaineer offense did a good job of running the clock. The defense continued to shine as it would hold the Cougars to 51 yards total offense – 24 on the ground and 27 in the air on just four of 14 completions. Kings Mountain finished with 199 yards total offense. Sanders caught four passes for 53 yards, Brown and Zay Smith two each for 17 yards each, and Jeffries one for four. Jeffries and Caleb Holland led the rushing with 36 and 35 yards, respectively.“Everybody played hard,” Coach Lloyd noted. “We were able to keep the ball away from them. After a tough one at Shelby it was a good win for us. We are happy to be where we are.” After the Asheville punter dropped the snap on a punt attempt midway of the third Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers have opened their 2022 football season with a pair of impressive wins over perennial North Carolina powers Shelby and Asheville, but their toughest game so far comes Friday night when a powerful Burns team comes to John Gamble Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The Bulldogs’ come to town with an impressive resume with blowout wins over the Forestview Jaguars and Crest Chargers. They have tons of experience and are led by one of the area’s – if not one of the state’s – best quarterbacks in 6-3 Ben Mauney who is averaging 388 yards passing per game. They also have a strong running attack, led by Jeremiah Norris with 111 yards per game. “Burns is definitely an improved team,” says Mountaineer coach Greg Lloyd. “They have tons of skill players who make big plays. They’re very aggressive and they are the best team we’ve seen to this point. “They are really good in all areas of the game,” he added. “They’re strong on both sides of the ball. Their quarterback is a returning starter and they have a lot of seniors that have had good success. I’d say they are one of the top two or three 2A teams in the state. They are a state championship caliber team.“This will be a big test for us,” he said. “We’ll have to earn everything we get. We need to stay on the field, pick up first downs and not have turnovers. They have a lot of seniors that started their sophomore and junior years. Their receivers are really tall and talented and skilled athletes.“They’re going to be a challenge. Their quarterback is a junior and is starting for his second year. We have to be ready. This is our third tough game. We’d like to get finished up non-conference with everybody healthy. Then we’ll have an open date before we start conference play. But we can’t think about anything but Burns right now.”

KM’s Watts first, KM teams second in opening XC meet
Both Kings Mountain teams ran second to South Point in the Mountaineers’ first cross country meet last week – a two-mile scrimmage- at KMHS but the Mountaineers’ sophomore Isaiah Watts ran first with a time of 11:23. He finished 23 seconds ahead of second place Mason Braswell of South Point in 11:46. It was the only home meet scheduled for the Mountaineers this season. The Mountaineers’ only other top ten finisher was Hunter Cruise, who was 10th in 13:07. Nathan Inthavong was 16th, Marty Lovingood 19th, Elliot Habel 20th, Nicholas Horn 24th, Nathaniel Kiser 39th, Marcus Williams 40th, Hayden Huss 49th and Eric BellSouth51st. Point’s girls finished with 34 points to KM’s 38. Forestview was third with 56. In the boys’ race, South Point had 37 to KM’s 63. Forestview was third with 75, followed by Crest 99, Hunter Huss 114 and West Lincoln 150. The Lady Mountaineers were led by Divinity Ervin, who finished second to South Point’s Lexi Birtwistle 14:01 to 14:29. KM’s Thalia Kushman was third in Kings14:40.Mountain’s only other top 10 finisher was 10th place Brooke Waseman in 16:16. KMHS band entertains the crowd at football home opener
Kings Mountain High’s football team played its first home game of the season Friday night. After a 45-minute lightning delay the Mountaineers squared off against Asheville and posted an impressive 24-0 victory. Not only did the team play its usual exciting game, the band did as well before a packed home crowd. The Mountaineers and the band will be back on the Gamble Stadium turf Friday with a big county rivalry game with the undefeated Burns Bulldogs.

They remain at home Tuesday to host Hunter Huss. The Lady Mountaineers fell to a very good Polk County team 3-2 last Tuesday but defeated a good Weddington team 3-1 Thursday at Donald L. Parker Gymnasium. The Lady Mountaineers started off strong at Polk County with a 25-18 win in the first set before falling 25-21 in the second and third sets. They rebounded to win 25-12 before falling in the fifth and deciding set 15-8.
