Community Eligibility Schools (CEP) receive breakfast and lunch free of charge. In Kings Mountain and Grover, the following elementary schools meet this requirement: Bethware Elementary School, East Elementary School, Grover Elementary School, and North Elementary School. Section 104(a) of the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 amended the National School Lunch Act to provide an alternative to household eligibility applications for free and reduced-price meals in high poverty districts and schools. The overall purpose of the CEP is to improve access to nutritious meals for students in high poverty areas by providing meals to all students “at no cost” to the students. Students enrolled in a non-CEP school who eats meals while visiting a CEP school automatically qualify for free breakfast and lunch.

Street art is thought to have originated in Italy in the 16th century. Originally, the artwork was of a religious nature, therefore the artists were called “Madonnari”. Vagabond artists would travel throughout Italy between festivals, living solely on the coins tossed onto or next to their drawings as homage to the Madonna or possibly to their abilities. For centuries, the Madonnari were true folk artists, but suffered a decline after World War II. Visiting W. Mountain Street on Wednesday, August 24, the Herald could see progress as Streetscape continues. The panoramic photo shows sidewalks on the south side of the street are almost complete. By the next day, light posts were in place on both sides of the street, with several in place beside Premier Body Armor and other businesses in the 100 block of W. Mountain Street. On the north side of the road, concrete had been poured in front of UnCommon Artisans. By the next day, the owner had signs out that the shop was open for business.Near the intersection of Mountain Street at Battleground Avenue, work crews cleaned up gravel from the roadway. Planters on either side of the road will be filled with dirt and mulch added. Plantings, including trees, will not be added until the fall. While an exact date has not been issued by the city, merchants are encouraged that the road will be open soon.Up the block, at Mountain Holiday, a placard out front of the shop reminding the community the need to shop local.

Regardless of which end of the business spectrum you find yourself, we can all benefit from being still and resting in theOneLord.of my favorite verses I read or meditate on frequently is this, “Be still, and know that I am God.; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:10). To be sure, we must be reminded to remove ourselves from our current predicament and focus on the Lord. Only when I calm my mind and heart and focus on the Lord am I adequately equipped to evaluate my situation or allow God to handle it. In part, to be still and know God means for us to think and pray profoundly concerning who God is and how God is active in our lives. For this reason, the beginning of Psalm 46 declares, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though the water roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging” (Psalm 46:1-3). After reading and believing that God is our refuge and strength, we can be still and know He is God. This week, let’s make a common goal: read Psalm 46 and meditate on these words. Think about God’s attributes and activities in our lives. As a worship pastor, one of my responsibilities is to evaluate music and incorporate the songs into the theme of our different morning services. One of the most popular themes of new music deals with being still, allowing God to speak, and trusting in Him. I conclude my final August article with the words of a modern hymn. I pray these lyrics will encourage and remind you to rest in Christ alone. Many Jonathanblessings, Dr.M.JonathanBundon Pastor

A ladies county-wide Bible study will begin at Pfeiffer Cafe & Confections, located at 116 E. Warren Street, Shelby on Wednesday, September 7 through October 12 from 9 AM11AM.Best selling author and local Cleveland County native Cindi Wood will be leading the six-week study "Anonymous" . Reserve your spot by texting your name and contact info to: 704-418-1199. Bible study books will be available for $15 which includes registration.Cindi recently began exploring the idea of doing a county-wide Bible study with her friends. Their goal was to reach out to women to share their intense love for Jesus and the joy that He infuses into their lives. They wanted the location to be centrally located in the county, so that people from all over could get there easily. It needed to be a fun place to meet where women could feel comfortable, have fun conversation and good food to Steveeat.and Vicky Knapp, owners of Pfeiffer Cafe & Confections welcomed the opportunity to offer their restaurant as a place to meet before they open for lunch. Cindi shared, "The main purpose for the study is to feed our souls. Never has there been a time when so many are disheartened and discouraged and need hope. We want this to be a time that those who are in relationship with Jesus would come and join in and be encouraged. We also welcome those who have never explored this relationship, to join the group and learn what having fellowship with Jesus does for you. He is the answer to everything you are going through. It will be a wonderful time of gathering. The foundation of the 'Anonymous' study will be in scripture. We will take a look at the lives of four nameless women in the Bible whose lives were radically changed when they came in contact with Jesus. If you know Him, be there. If you don't know Him, come and find out about Him. God has great things in store. I can sense that God is ready to do a mighty work in those who turn to Him. There is still time to register. If you have done the 'Anonymous' study before, please come anyway, as there will be fresh new teaching. If you are hesitant about being in a crowd of women you don't know, don't worry, God will make it ok."Cindi is a sought after speaker and Bible teacher, guiding women to deal with daily stress by experiencing a practical and deep relationship with Jesus. • A would-be employer refuses to give workers a signed contract or asks them to sign a contract in a language they can’t read.

• A family member, friend, or student lives with a parent or guardian and shows signs of abuse.

According to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center, there is now an average of 78 sex trafficking cases every year in North Carolina, and Charlotte is the number one city. But the region also plays into this statistic, due to the highway corridors leading into the city, including i-85 and U.S. 74. As the U.S. anti-trafficking movement has grown in their understanding of this diverse and complex crime, they are learning more about how specific people, such as medical professionals, teachers, truck drivers, and restaurant personnel, in addition to friends and family members, can help identify and report possible trafficking. Everyone can help by learning the types of trafficking and paying attention to the people around them.

HowLureTraffickersPeopleIn Stories become weapons in the hands of human traffickers — tales of romantic love everlasting or about good jobs and fair wages just over the horizon. Sometimes, the stories themselves raise red flags. Other times, traffickers or potential traffickers may raise red flags during recruitment.Hereare a few situations that might raise concerns:

Sex trafficking occurs when individuals are made to perform commercial sex through force, fraud, or coercion. Any child under 18 who is involved in commercial sex is legally a victim of trafficking, regardless of whether there is a third party involved.

Labor trafficking includes situations where men, women, and children are forced to work because of debt, immigration status, threats, and violence. Keeping victims isolated, physically or emotionally, is a key method of control in most labor trafficking situations. But that does not mean you never cross paths with someone who is experiencing trafficking.Someone may be experiencing labor trafficking or exploitation if they: • Feel pressured by their employer to stay in a job or situation they want to leave • Owe money to an employer or recruiter or are not being paid what they were promised or are owed • Do not have control of their passport or other identity•documentsAreliving and working in isolated conditions, largely cut off from interaction with others or support systems

RecognizingTraffickingLabor

Anyone can experience trafficking in any community, just as anyone can be the victim of any kind of crime. While it can happen to anyone, evidence suggests that people of color and LGBTQ+ people are more likely to experience trafficking than other demographic groups. Generational trauma, historic oppression, discrimination, and other societal factors and inequities create community-wide vulnerabilities. Traffickers recognize and take advantage of people who are vulnerable.Peoplemay be vulnerable to trafficking if they: • Have an unstable living situation•Have previously experienced other forms of violence such as sexual abuse or domestic violence • Have run away or are involved in the juvenile justice or child welfare system • Are undocumented immigrants•Are facing poverty or economic need • Have a caregiver or family member who has a substance use issue • Are addicted to drugs or alcohol Who Are the Traffickers

After sluggish start, Mountaineers roll to big 24-0 win over Asheville

Lightning didn’t just strike before the game, it did again when KM’s Ja’Qualyn Sanders made a great leaping catch for a touchdown in Friday’s game with the Asheville Cougars at KMHS. Photos by Gary Smart

period, the Mountaineers marched 49 yards in 11 plays to go up 17-0 on a five-yard touchdown run by Holland and Ellis’s PAT. Facing fourth and one at the Asheville 40, big AJ Richardson plowed two yards for a first down at the 38 and two runs by Kendrick made it first and ten on the 25. A face mask penalty on Asheville resulted in a first down at the 15 and three straight runs by Holland put the Mountaineers in the end zone with 29 seconds left in theOncequarteragain the KM defense came up big as Micah Ward’s tackle for a two-yard loss forced a 21-yard punt by the Cougars. Taking over at the Asheville 49, the Mountaineers continued to work the clock. Smith made a remarkable sideline catch for a first down at the Asheville 36 and Holland carried three times for 11 yards to set up a 25-yard TD pass from Littlejohn to Sanders who made an over the shoulder catch in the end zone for the final TD with 6:56 remaining. The defense held the Cougars to another three and out and the KM took over with just 5:15 remaining. Led by the running of Feemster and Ward and a 10-yard reception by Sanders, the Mountaineers ran the clock down to 51 seconds before Asheville intercepted a pass. But it was too little, too Thelate. Mountaineers were without one of their top players, senior Jake Lloyd who developed a mild case of COVID after turning in a strong all-around effort in the Mountaineers’ opening win at Shelby the week before, but his replacements played very“Jakewell. looks fine and I think he may be able to play Friday,” Coach Lloyd said. “We’ll just have to wait and see.”

The lightning that sent teams and fans out of John Gamble Stadium for 45 minutes Friday night was nothing like the yellow flags flying all over the place in the first quarter of the winrolleddownAsheville.non-conferenceMountaineers’gamewithBut,thingsfinallysettledandtheMountaineerstotheirsecondstraight24-0.“Wewerebehindthe chains starting out,” Coach Greg Lloyd noted. “We were out of rhythm but the more we got into the game it was cleaner. We were shooting ourselves in the foot with some penalties and turnovers.”The Mountaineers got going early in the second quarter after a Jaden Ellis kickoff into the end zone made Asheville’s offense start on its own 20. Backed up on their 10-yard line following a Curtis Simpson sack, the Cougars had to punt and it traveled just 19 yards and KM took over on Asheville’s 33 yard line. A roughing the passer flag on the Cougars gave KM a first down at the 22 and an 11-yard pass from Lamont Littlejohn to Bryson Brown and three rushes by Teddy Jeffries put the Mountaineers into the end zone. Jaden Ellis’ PAT made it 7-0 with 7:24 left in the half. With 44 seconds left on the first half clock, Simpson blocked a punt and KM took over on the Asheville 17. Three KM passes fell incomplete, but Ellis came on to boot a 34-yard field goal to send the Mountaineers into halftime with a 10-0 lead. The flags didn’t fly as much in the second half and the Mountaineer offense did a good job of running the clock. The defense continued to shine as it would hold the Cougars to 51 yards total offense – 24 on the ground and 27 in the air on just four of 14 completions. Kings Mountain finished with 199 yards total offense. Sanders caught four passes for 53 yards, Brown and Zay Smith two each for 17 yards each, and Jeffries one for four. Jeffries and Caleb Holland led the rushing with 36 and 35 yards, respectively.“Everybody played hard,” Coach Lloyd noted. “We were able to keep the ball away from them. After a tough one at Shelby it was a good win for us. We are happy to be where we are.” After the Asheville punter dropped the snap on a punt attempt midway of the third Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers have opened their 2022 football season with a pair of impressive wins over perennial North Carolina powers Shelby and Asheville, but their toughest game so far comes Friday night when a powerful Burns team comes to John Gamble Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The Bulldogs’ come to town with an impressive resume with blowout wins over the Forestview Jaguars and Crest Chargers. They have tons of experience and are led by one of the area’s – if not one of the state’s – best quarterbacks in 6-3 Ben Mauney who is averaging 388 yards passing per game. They also have a strong running attack, led by Jeremiah Norris with 111 yards per game. “Burns is definitely an improved team,” says Mountaineer coach Greg Lloyd. “They have tons of skill players who make big plays. They’re very aggressive and they are the best team we’ve seen to this point. “They are really good in all areas of the game,” he added. “They’re strong on both sides of the ball. Their quarterback is a returning starter and they have a lot of seniors that have had good success. I’d say they are one of the top two or three 2A teams in the state. They are a state championship caliber team.“This will be a big test for us,” he said. “We’ll have to earn everything we get. We need to stay on the field, pick up first downs and not have turnovers. They have a lot of seniors that started their sophomore and junior years. Their receivers are really tall and talented and skilled athletes.“They’re going to be a challenge. Their quarterback is a junior and is starting for his second year. We have to be ready. This is our third tough game. We’d like to get finished up non-conference with everybody healthy. Then we’ll have an open date before we start conference play. But we can’t think about anything but Burns right now.”

KMHS band entertains the crowd at football home opener

Kings Mountain High’s football team played its first home game of the season Friday night. After a 45-minute lightning delay the Mountaineers squared off against Asheville and posted an impressive 24-0 victory. Not only did the team play its usual exciting game, the band did as well before a packed home crowd. The Mountaineers and the band will be back on the Gamble Stadium turf Friday with a big county rivalry game with the undefeated Burns Bulldogs.

What the program means for you, and what comes President Biden, Vice President Harris, and the U.S. Department of Education announced a threepart plan to help working and middle-class federal student loan borrowers transition back to regular payment as pandemic-related support expires. This plan includes loan forgiveness of up to $20,000. Many borrowers and families may be asking themselves “what do I have to do to claim this relief?” Directions was shared as a resource to answer those questions by Federal Student Aid, and office of the Department of Education. There will be more details announced in the coming weeks. To be notified when the process has officially opened, sign up at the Department of Education subscription page. You’ll have until Dec. 31, 2023, to apply.

Part 1: Final extension of the student loan repayment pause. Due to the economic challenges created by the pandemic, the Biden-Harris Administration has extended the student loan repayment pause a number of times. Because of this, no one with a federally held loan has had to pay a single dollar in loan payments since President Biden took office. To ensure a smooth transition to repayment and prevent unnecessary defaults, the Biden-Harris Administration will extend the pause a final time through December 31, 2022, with payments resuming in January 2023. •

FrequentlyQuestions:Asked Do I need to do anything to extend my student loan pause through the end of the No.year?Theextended pause will occur automatically.

• Nearly 8 million borrowers may be eligible to receive relief automatically because relevant income data is already available to the U.S. Department of Education.•Ifthe U.S. Department of Education doesn’t have your income data, the Administration will launch a simple application which will be available by early October.•Ifyou would like to be notified when the application is open, please sign up at the Department of Education subscription page.

• The Department of Education will continue to process applications as they are received, even after the pause expires on December 31, 2022.

• How do I know if I am eligible for debt cancellation? To be eligible, your annual income must have fallen below $125,000 (for individuals) or $250,000 (for married couples or heads of households)•If you received a Pell Grant in college and meet the income threshold, you will be eligible for up to $20,000 in debt cancellation.• If you did not receive a Pell Grant in college and meet the income threshold, you will be eligible for up to $10,000 in debt cancellation. What does the “up to” in “up to $20,000” or “up to $10,000” mean? Your relief is capped at the amount of your outstanding debt. For example: If you are eligible for $20,000 in debt relief, but have a balance of $15,000 remaining, you will only receive $15,000 in relief. What do I need to do to receive forgiveness?loan

In addition, borrowers who are employed by non-profits, the military, or federal, state, Tribal, or local government may be eligible to have all their student loans forgiven through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. This is because of time-limited changes that waive certain eligibility criteria in the PSLF program. These temporary changes expire on October 31, 2022. Part 2: Providing targeted debt relief to low- and middle-income families. To smooth the transition back to repayment and help borrowers at highest risk of delinquencies or default once payments resume, the U.S. Department of Education will provide up to $20,000 in debt cancellation to Pell Grant recipients with loans held by the Department of Education and up to $10,000 in debt cancellation to non-Pell Grant recipients.
