Shortly after a search was conducted, approximately 44 pounds of methamphetamine and 2.2 pounds of cocaine was seized from inside the vehicle.CCSO estimates the street value of these drugs to be over a million dollars and suspect the destination was in the heart of Cleveland County to be dispersed throughout our neighborhoods.

STREETSCAPE PROGRESS – Last week, progress was made to prepare Mountain Street for reopening. Some concrete was poured and the gaps between curbs and the road were filled with gravel and asphalt poured. Work will continue this week to prepare for opening the 100 block of West Mountain Street and portions of Cherokee Street. Merchants have requested that concrete be poured on Mondays, when many close due to being open on Saturdays. Good work was done last week, and merchants hope sidewalks are next on the list. No exact date for reopening has yet been set. The photo shows all streets at the intersection of W. Mountain Street and Cherokee Street. To the left is Cherokee Street south, center is W. On Wednesday, August 17, U.S. District Judge William Osteen lifted his injunction against North Carolina’s abortion law, reinstating a ban on most abortions after 20 Judgeweeks. Osteen made his ruling based upon the Dobbs decision writing, “Most notably, this injunction does not preserve Plaintiffs’ ability to provide services contrary to North Carolina law; under Dobbs, there is now no constitutional right to a pre-viability abortion, thus depriving the injunction of any constitutional basis from which to enjoin the challenged North Carolina laws regulating abortion. Contrary to the parties’ arguments, leaving the injunction in place wrongfully heightens confusion because to do so is misleading as to the effect of Dobbs.”

On September 2 – 4, 2022 Shelby Amateur Radio Club (SARC) will host its 66th Annual Shelby Hamfest. Shelby Amateur Radio club sponsors the annual Shelby Hamfest which is being held at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds on Labor Day weekend! Shelby Amateur Radio Club began hosting this event in 1957. Shelby Hamfest is an event where Amateur Radio vendors and manufacturers set up to show their latest products. Campers begin arriving a week ahead of time to visit and fellowship with each other. It is also a place where amateur radio operators who talk on the radio regularly are able to have an “eyeball qso.” A QSO is a contact between two amateur radio stations. The officer said a physician said Connington probably suffered cardiac arrest and had no injuries consistent with the vehicle crash. Property damage was estimated at $15,000.AUGUST 17: Officer Cutler said Michael Stephen Matuska, Shelby, operating a 1999 Ford, rear-ended a 2010 Chevrolet operated by Amanda Hope Martin, 919 Margrace Road, on NC 216, from South Margrace Road toward Park Grace Road. At the time of the crash, it was raining heavily. Martin’s vehicle was out of gas and part of her vehicle was in the roadway and part of it was out. She said she was waiting for a friend to bring gas when the accident happened. She said her hazard lights and car lights were on when her car was rear-ended and pushed off the right side and into a ditch. Matuska said it was raining so hard he could not see and when he could see and attempted to stop his vehicle slid on the wet roadway and into the Chevrolet. No injuries were reported. The first Shelby Hamfest was held at Brackett’s Cedar Park in 1957 with about 300 in attendance and over the years it outgrew the park moving to the Cleveland County Fairgrounds in 1979. In the mid 1990’s the attendance had grown into the 10,000s. In 2008, the hamfest moved temporarily to Dallas Park in Dallas, NC and returned home to the Cleveland County Fairgrounds in 2013. While attendance has dropped in recent years, the Shelby Hamfest is still considered one of the largest hamfest on
the east coast and is the largest in the ARRL Roanoke Division (North & South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia). Shelby Hamfest attendees come from all over the United States and the world each year and stay in area hotels and eat at local restaurants. The hamfest has drawn amateur radio operators from as far away as New Zealand, Turkey, India, Great Britain and Sweden. Some of the proceeds from the Hamfest go towards maintenance and upkeep of the club’s 6 repeaters. These repeaters are available for service to the Cleveland County Emergency Management and other served agencies such as the American Red Cross should a disaster occur in the county. Some of the proceeds are donated to local and deserving charities. In past years, The Shelby Amateur Radio Club donated to Salvation Army, Cleveland Rutherford Kidney Association, Crossroads Rescue Mission, Life Enrichment Center, Council on Aging, ARRL Spectrum Defense Fund and other organizations in and around CleveDRUGS

Hospice Cleveland County receives Non-Profit of the Year Award
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced today that Army Pfc. David N. Owens, 27, of Green Hills, North Carolina, killed during World War II, was accounted for June 15. A newspaper article that ran soon after identified Owens as a resident of Belmont.InNovember 1944, Owens was assigned to Company E, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. His unit was engaged in battle with German forces near Hürtgen, Germany, in the Hürtgen Forest, when he was reported missing in action on Nov. 22. His body unable to be recovered, and the Germans never reported him as a prisoner of war. He was declared killed in action Nov. 23, 1945. Following the end of the war, the American Graves Registration Command was tasked with investigating and recovering missing American personnel in Europe. They conducted several investigations in the Hürtgen area between 1946 and 1950 but were unable to recover or identify Owens’ remains. He was declared non-recoverable in December 1950. While studying unresolved American losses in the Hürtgen area, a DPAA historian determined that one set of unidentified remains, designated X-2707 Neuville, recovered near Hürtgen in 1946 possibly belonged to Owens. On Tuesday, February 5, 1974, an afternoon fire destroyed two-thirds of a local textile operation owned by Lawrence Patrick of Kings Mountain. According to city fire chief, Gene Tignor, the fire broke out in the old Kings Mountain ice plant at 5:30 p.m., and firemen from Kings Mountain, Oak Grove and Bethlehem battled the blaze until 10 p.m. Tignor said one-third of the building, which contained yam machinery, was saved but it even suffered water damage. Monetary loss had not yet been determined at the time of the story.

Instead of hiring 87,000 new agents we need to hire some security guards for our their children to have a good education. State funded universities and private colleges continue to increase tuition. Do you really have $160,000 to send your child to college? Most likely, the institution being considered charges even more. The only hope for many American families is the twoyear community college. Many teenagers would benefit greatly to have two more years to grow up, some before landing in a dorm room 200 miles from home. The prospects of making it academically, socially, and financially will be greatly increased. This gives them time to seriously consider the right institution to go to for their junior and senior years. They will still have the degree and save some money.Finally, don’t live in despair.Lifegoes by quickly even if you are young. Study, work, make money, be innovative, love people and be kind to everyone. Do some things you think you might enjoy. If you don’t enjoy them, then move on to something else. Enjoy life and do what you can, while you can.

When I backthinkto BeachBlastweekends.KingsbustlehustlememberIandinchildhoodmythe‘60s‘70s,oftenre-theandofdowntownMountainontheEventslikeremindme of those times, especially because of the challenges with parking throughout the downtown business district on event days. To me, it is a pleasant reminder of times past and an encouraging sign of things to come. As a child, going downtown to shop on Saturdays was always an exciting time. It was exciting, not only because of those things we might buy, but also for the people we might see and the new merchandise in the shops with each passing season.Wevisited every shop on Battleground Avenue, starting at Belk’s Department Store and working our way down to Scottie’s, a drug store that once occupied the building at E. Gold Street and S. Battleground Avenue. If it were spring, we’d visit the Farm Center on E. Gold Street to see the chicks brought in for Easter. We always crossed the railroad tracks and visited Plonk’s too. Along Battleground Avenue, parking meters were at every space, which was a revenue generator for the city, and it helped keep folks aware of the time. If people came downtown for a specific purpose, they put as little money as possible in the meter, made their purchase quickly, then moved on. If they came to browse, they might park a block away and walk to avoid the meter fee or a potential ticket if they lost track of theEarlytime.in the day, usually all parking spaces were taken. Last Saturday’s downtown parking reminded me of that time. I peeked at the Cherokee Street lot, and it was full also. With Mountain Street under construction, there were no cars parked there. But, once construction is complete, more spaces will also be available there for

No wonder the Bible likens our relationship to God to the potter and clay. Admittedly, I have felt like a lifeless lump of clay at times. I ask myself questions like, Why am I where I am? What purpose does God have for me? Am I making a difference? What’s more, I may even question God as to my usefulness at all. Romans 9:20-21 reminds me, “But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will, what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” Has the potter no right over the clay?” To be sure, I believe all of us have questioned God, but I am quickly reminded of who we are in the hands of the artist, God’s masterpiece. Isaiah 64:8 further declares, “But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.” God’s word gives me confidence that we are created with a purpose, and God doesn’t make junk. In fact, not only are we not junk, Paul in Ephesians calls us God’s workmanship or handiwork.However, as with clay, we must be yielded and molded to be any good to the potter. There are times in our lives when we want to live our own life rather than what God intends. We do not feel like being molded and made into the image of Christ. Then, there comes a process, sometimes painful, of shaping and pressing and even breaking us so we can be formed into the beautiful masterpiece GodOften,envisions.Ising songs as a prayer of surrender to God’s will and way in my life. By Loretta Cozart Join Broad River Genealogy Society on Sunday, September 11 at 3 p.m., for a presentation by Dr. Ashley Oliphant and her mother Beth Yarbrough about their book, Jean Laffite Revealed. The mother-daughter team will dive into their research on the Pirate Jean Laffite connection to Lorenzo Ferrer in Lincolnton, NC. Might they be the same man?One of America's Longest-Running Mysteries takes a fresh look at the various myths and legends surrounding one of the last great pirates. Beginning in 1805, the book traces Laffite through his rise to power as a privateer and smuggler in the Gulf, his involvement in the Battle of New Orleans, his flight to Texas, and his eventual disappearance in the waters of the Caribbean. With stunning revelations, this book picks up the trail of his complicated life. They also give us a history lesson about the times and places surrounding the unfolding drama.Lorenzo Ferrer came to Lincolnton in 1839, and the authors believe he was the New Orleans pirate Jean Laffite. He lived in Lincolnton near the Court Square until 1875, when he died at the age of 96. Their book used primary archival documents found in seven states gathered over a 2-year period to prove that Laffite faked his death in the 1820s, hid in Cuba for a time with the help of some well-placed friends, and then re-entered the United States using the alias, Lorenzo Ferrer. He settled first in Mississippi to take advantage of the cotton boom of the 1830s, but he transitioned up to North Carolina as that economic opportunity began to fade. “We were able to prove that it was Laffite's relationship with the Lincolnton Henderson family that brought him here from Mississippi, where several of them had gone for the cotton boom,” Dr. Oliphant shared. Their book was published by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Press in 2021, and they are actively working on the sequel, as they continue to uncover more information to support their case. BRGS presents program on Pirate Jean Laffite in Lincoln County
Recently, Troop 92 travelled to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico to experience 12 days of backcountry camping and activities. The group arrived at Philmont Scout Ranch and spent two nights in base camp becoming educated in various skills and practices that would ensure their backcountry trip was an enjoyable experience. On days 3-12, the crew camped in elevations between 6800 and 9200 feet. Along the trek, their itinerary included: the use of a burro to assist in carrying gear in the rough terrain, tomahawk throwing, railroading, ancient petroglyphs, cowboy action shooting, reloading shotshells, shotgun shooting, muzzleloading, spar pole climbing, and more.

Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers opened their 100th season of football Friday night with a victory that will be remembered for a long time. They went across Buffalo Creek and defeated their longest and toughest rival Shelby 28-26.

Kings Mountain High’s volleyball team continued to roll last week with non-conference 3-0 wins over East Lincoln and St. Stephens. The Lady Mountaineers defeated East Lincoln 2521, 25-14, 25-14 and St. Stephens 25-20, 25-15, 2523.In the win over East Lincoln, Meile Songaila provided nine serve receptions, nine digs, 17 kills and seven service points. Camden Pasour had 16 assists, eight digs, three kills and eight service points. Paige Bagwell had 10 assists, five digs, nine kills and eight service points; Caroline Barber five assists, 16 serve receptions, 16 digs and six service points; and Myracle Davis 10 kills. In JV action, KM won 25-10 and 25-20. Megan Harrison had eight kills and three service points, Brooke Hamrick four kills and nine service points and Abigail Hedgepath eight service points and 16 assists. Against St. Stephens, Songaila had 10 kills, nine digs, one block, nine service points and 17 serve receptions. “It was a big win for us,” said KM head coach Greg Lloyd. “It was very exciting. We played well against one of the top teams in the state and didn’t have any turnovers. We cramped some in the second half and that hurt us, but on Shelby’s last drive our defense got enough stops.”

Jaden Ellis booted his fourth straight extra point to put the Mountaineers up 28-13, and it would prove to be big because Shelby’s offense wasn’t through. They got two quick TD’s to make it interesting at the end. Following a punt return to the KM 36, it took just four Daylin Lee passes to pull the Lions within 28-20 with 6:12 remaining. The Shelby defense stood big, forcing a KM three and out, and Shelby took over after a KM punt was downed on the Lions’ 32. Back-to-back penalties on the Mountaineers moved the ball to the 42 and Lee went to the air and pulled the Lions to within 28-26 but the KM defense stopped their twopoint conversion attempt with 2:35 left. KM took possession at its own 20 and the Mountaineers got their second wind. A first down run by Teddy Jeffries went for 22 yards to the 42 and then the offensive line and big Mountaineer senior AJ Richardson took charge. Two totes by Richardson gave the Mountaineers a first down at the Lions’ 46. The Lions took their final time out with 1:35 left and Richardson carried twice more to the 37. KM intentionally took a five-yard delay of game penalty with 11 seconds left, and Littlejohn took a knee to end the game.

KM JVs open season with 35-6 win over rival Shelby
A scoop and score by the Mountaineer defense on the first series of the game sparked a 35-6 victory over rival Shelby in the opening JV game Thursday night at Gamble Stadium. The Mountaineers won the opening coin flip and opted to go on defense. Facing fourth and 12 at the KM 48, Shelby’s Santana London fumbled and Kings Mountain’s Zavion Wilson scooped up the ball and rambled 55 yards for a touchdown. Vance Johnson kicked the point-after and the rout was underway. The defense came up big again on Shelby’s next possession as freshman Izaiah Jones sacked the Shelby QB for a 14-yard loss at the Lions’ 25. After a five-yard delay of game penalty on the Lions, they attempted a fourth and 24 punt from the 20 but a bad snap went into the end zone and KM’s Kameron Adams recovered it for a safety and a 9-0 lead. Shelby’s free kick from the 20 was returned by KM’s Kameron Adams for a 60yard TD and a 14-0 lead.

The defense showed its stuff again on Shelby’s next possession as Dom Davis blocked a Lions’ punt and returned it 15 yards to the Lions’ one yard line. Quarterback TJ Armstrong scored on a sneak and Vance Johnson’s PAT made it 21-0. The KM defense came up big again as back-to-back sacks by Davis and Semaj Odems forced a Shelby punt. KM took over on its own 34 and Kameron Adams picked up 10 yards on the final play of the first period to spark an 8-play, 66 yard touchdown drive. After a seven yard run by Adams, Shelby was penalized 15 yards for a horse collar penalty and the Mountaineers had a first and 10 at the Lions’ 35. Facing fourth and 15 from the 25, Armstrong found Lanair behind the Shelby D in the end zone and hit him for the TD. Johnson’s PAT made it 28-0 with 6:22 on the first half clock. Shelby was able to get its only TD of the night when Calvin Ramseur took the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to the endLedzone.by good blocking and the running of Hill and Adams, the Mountaineers drove 60 yards to score on a 31-yard pass from Armstrong to Xzorion Lenair with 1:12 left in the half. Johnson’s PAT split the uprights and KM went into the break with a 35-6 lead. Feeling comfortable that it would hold, the KM coaching staff used the second half to work most of – if not all – their players into the game. Shelby was able to get to the Mountaineer 31 late in the third period but a 9-yard sack by KM’s Zavion Wilson and Dom Davis stopped the Lions dead at the KM 40. After that, the Lions stayed deep in their own territory the rest of the night. The JVs will be road warriors for a while now. They go to Asheville this Thursday, then to Burns on September 1. They will have a bye on September 8 and go to Hunter Huss on September 15. After that they will be back in Gamble Stadium for back-to-back home games against North Gaston and Forestview.

The final rule also includes performance specifications and device design requirements specific to OTC hearing aids. The action correspondingly amends existing rules that apply to prescription hearing aids for consistency with the new OTC category, it repeals the conditions for sale for hearing aids, and it includes provisions that address some of the effects of the FDA OTC hearing aid regulations on state regulation of hearing aids. Concurrently with issuing the final rule, the FDA also issued the final guidance, Regulatory Requirements for Hearing Aid Devices and Personal Sound Amplification Products (PSAPs), to clarify the differences between hearing aids, which are medical devices, and PSAPs, consumer products that help people with normal hearing amplify sounds. The effective date for the final rule is 60 days following publication in the Federal Register. Manufacturers of hearing aids sold prior to the effective date of the final rule will have 240 days after its publication to comply with the new or revised requirements. “Reducing health care costs in America has been a priority of mine since Day One and this rule is expected to help us achieve quality, affordable health care access for millions of Americans in need,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra. “Today’s action by the FDA represents a significant milestone in making hearing aids more cost-effective and accessible.” Close to 30 million adults in the U.S. could benefit from hearing aid use. Individuals with permanent hearing impairment can use hearing aids to help make speech and sounds louder, improving the ability to communicate effectively with others. Many hearing aids can be expensive. The final rule aims to stimulate competition and facilitate the sale of safe and effective OTC hearing aids in traditional retail stores or online nationwide, providing consumers with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss with improved access to devices that meet their needs and are less expensive than current options.
“Hearing loss is a critical public health issue that affects the ability of millions of Americans to effectively communicate in their daily social interactions,” said FDA Commissioner Robert M. Califf, M.D. “Establishing this new regulatory category will allow people with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss to have convenient access to an array of safe, effective and affordable hearing aids from their neighborhood store or online.” The OTC category established in this final rule applies to certain air-conduction hearing aids intended for people 18 years of age and older who have perceived mild to moderate hearing impairment. Hearing aids that do not meet the requirements for the OTC category (for example, because they are intended for severe hearing impairment or users younger than age 18) are prescription devices. The FDA finalized the rule after receiving and reviewing more than 1,000 public comments on the proposed rule issued on Oct. 20, 2021. Comments submitted by consumers, professional associations, hearing aid manufacturers, public health organizations and advocacy groups, members of Congress, state agencies, and other stakeholders are summarized in the final rule, along with the FDA’s respective responses. In response to public comments and to assure the safety and effectiveness of OTC hearing aids, the final rule incorporates several changes from the proposed rule, including lowering the maximum sound output to reduce the risk to hearing from over-amplification of sound, revising the insertion depth limit in the ear canal, requiring that all OTC hearing aids have a user-adjustable volume control, and simplifying the phrasing throughout the required device labeling to ensure it is easily understood.

On August 16, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a final rule to improve access to hearing aids which may in turn lower costs for millions of Americans. This action establishes a new category of over the counter (OTC) hearing aids, enabling consumers with perceived mild to moderate hearing impairment to purchase hearing aids directly from stores or online retailers without the need for a medical exam, prescription, or a fitting adjustment by an audiologist. The rule is expected to lower the cost of hearings aids. It is designed to assure the safety and effectiveness of OTC hearing aids, while fostering innovation and competition in the hearing aid technology marketplace.Tuesday’s action follows President Biden's Executive Order on Promoting Competition in the American Economy, which called for the FDA to take steps to allow hearing aids to be sold over the counter and set a swift 120-day deadline for action, which the FDA met. In 2017, Congress passed bipartisan legislation requiring the FDA to create a category of OTC hearing aids, but it was not fully implemented until now. Consumers could see OTC hearing aids available in traditional retail and drug stores as soon as mid-October when the rule takes effect.

Medicaid, however, (the joint federal and state program that covers health care for the poor) does cover nursing home and in-home care. But to be eligible for coverage, your mother must be very low-income. Her countable assets can’t be more than around $2,000, including investments. (Note that most people who enter a nursing home don’t qualify for Medicaid at first but pay for care out-ofpocket until they deplete their savings enough to qualify.)
Medicaid (not Medicare): The first thing you need to know is that Medicare (the government health insurance program for seniors 65 and older and those with disabilities) does not cover longterm care. It only provides limited shortterm coverage, up to 100 days for skilled nursing or rehabilitation services after a three-day hospital stay.

Veterans benefits: If your mom is a wartime veteran, or a spouse or surviving spouse of a wartime veteran, there is a benefit called Aid and Attendance that can help pay toward her long-term care. To be eligible, your mom must need assistance with daily living activities like bathing, dressing or going to the bathroom. And her yearly income must be under $15,816 as a surviving spouse, or $24,610 for a single veteran – after her medical and long-term care expenses.
