The Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County (BGCCC) is proud to uphold the traditions that have been a part of our community since the dedication of the Clubhouse in 1971. This year marks the fifty-third anniversary of the BGCCC Benefit Reverse Drawing and Auction, a testament to our enduring commitment to the children of our community.
The event, to be held on Friday, June 14, at the LeGrand Center, features a meal at 5:30 pm and the reverse drawing at 6:00 pm. The Grand Prize is a substantial $15,000 in cash, less applicable taxes. The evening also includes a silent auction and a live auction midway through the event. Prizes will be awarded to the holder of every fiftieth number drawn throughout the night, and the last five numbers drawn before the final prize will win a prize. It’s important to note that you do not have to be present to win the prize.

Although Elwin passed away in 2009, his daughter Tracy and Philbeck have continued to donate a framed print each year. Dr. Kim Greene, Angie Ledford, and Dr. Faye Burton, Board members, are coordinating the Benefit Raffle and Silent and Live Auctions. “People have supported us for many years, and one of the things that is unique to our Benefit Raffle is they want the same number every year, making it a little more complicated,” explained Dr. Greene. We are fortunate to have businesses that work with us to offer prizes and provide Silent and Live Auction items each year. This year’s live auction promises an exciting array of items. Don’t miss your chance to bid on the fantastic items!
The event is held the Friday before Father’s Day. Cakes baked by Board members are offered and auctioned off that night. Many fond memories of the competition between three or four bidders wanting to buy the cakes to offer it for dessert on Father’s Day.
Josh Propst, executive director of BGCCC, underscores the direct impact of your participation in the event. “Your generous contribution will provide the much-needed funds to staff the after-school sites at all eight locations, ensuring that Club Kids at the Main Club and Teen Center, as well as in elementary schools: Fallston, Casar, Springmore, Bethware, and North Elementary. Students at Eliza-
beth Elementary, in Shelby are served at the Main Club. BBGCC now serves over 350 children attending the After School Program daily. The Board’s challenge is increasing revenue to cover the site expenses. Your support is crucial in meeting this challenge and making a difference in the lives of these children.”

In Memory of Irene Wallace
February 10, 1922 - May 31, 1995
Dear Mama, I found this picture the other day. You, me and a cat. It just doesn’t get any better than that. I have always loved cats. Now I babysit a lot of cats and dogs and a couple of guinea pigs.
I care for other people’s Mamas too. I love that too.
Everyday I see so much of you in me. I am always using a “Irene” saying. You had a lot of them. I miss you so much Mama and I always will. You were the best.
Anybody reading this, tell your Mama you love her. I still tell mine everyday.
I love you Mama.
Love Susie

Swimming pool landscaping ideas
pools provide a way to cool off and enjoy a taste of luxury without having to travel. Backyard pools provided even more convenience and a welcome respite in 2020, as many public pools were closed in response to social distancing restrictions put in place during the pandemic.
After installing pools, many homeowners realize that touching up the landscaping around the pool can provide the finishing touch to their backyard retreats. Not all landscaping is the same, and homeowners should choose plants that look beautiful, are tolerant to pool splash-out and won’t outgrow the area. The home and garden resource The Spruce notes that a plant that is attractive at two feet tall can grow
rapidly and drop leaves or other debris into the pool.
When selecting options for pool landscaping, there are some considerations to keep in mind:
• Choose plants that will provide privacy.
• Know which kind of climate a plant needs prior to purchasing it. Tropical plants may be fitting poolside, but will they endure when the season is over?
• Design according to the theme of the home, as plants should complement the existing style. Modern foliage may not blend well with a home styled after a traditional English cottage.
• Decide whether you can accept spreading or trailing plants that can cascade over retaining walls and other infrastructure.
• Look at trees that won’t drop too many leaves, flow-
ers or fruit into the water.
• Think about having layers of plants to soften the landscape, which can make a small pool seem bigger and more luxurious, indicates the landscaping company Earth Development, Inc.
• Don’t overlook the possibility of a lawn abutting pavers or concrete surrounding a pool, as it can soften the edges and keep
spaces open and inviting.
• Incorporate herbs or fragrant plants, which can transform a pool day into a spa experience. Consider low-maintenance lavender as an option.
Pool landscaping must marry a variety of different features and plant requirements. As a result, a professional consultation may be the route to take. Landscape architects will have
the know-how to select plant varieties that will be tolerant, beautiful and fulfill homeowners’ wishes.
Backyard pools can make a backyard retreat
that much more enjoyable. Landscaping offers the softness and beauty that adds a finishing touch to poolside retreats.

ALWS 2024 needs volunteers, Now Accepting Applications
The American Legion World Series Executive Committee relies on volunteers to perform many functions at Keeter Stadium during the national tournament and the American Legion World Series festival in Uptown Shelby every August.
“Every aspect of the ALWS requires many more people than just our committee members and our core volunteer group,” says committee Chairman Eddie Holbrook. “We could never pull this off without them.”
More volunteers are needed for 2024 to serve as gatekeepers, ushers, shuttle drivers, concession staff, and festival volunteers.
Gatekeepers are responsible for checking tickets at the main gate during the ALWS games. They must be aware of the different types of tickets and how each should be handled. Gatekeepers typically work four-hour shifts. Volunteers are needed for day games.
cession stand, in the drink and snack tent next to the concession stand or at the grill next to the concession stand. They typically work three-hour shifts; they are asked to be at the stadium one hour before the game for which they are working.
Shuttle drivers are responsible for picking up attendees in the parking lots around Shelby High School and delivering them to Keeter Stadium. They also return attendees to the parking lots after each game. Drivers must be familiar with golf cart operations. They are expected to be courteous and careful drivers. Most work four-hour shifts.
Festival Volunteers will assist with festival activities including manning booths with children's activities, setup, breakdown and more. The American Legion World Series Festival is August 10 in Uptown Shelby from 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM. The 2024 tournament is scheduled for Aug. 15-20. The application for volunteers is online at www.alws.us. Anyone with questions about volunteering can call ALWS headquarters at 704-466-3103 weekdays from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

Quick and easy ways to give your kitchen a new look
Kitchens are often described as the busiest rooms in a home. Kitchens are where meals are prepared and tend to be go-to gathering spots on holiday get-togethers and during other events when homeowners host family and friends.
With so much time spent in the kitchen, it’s easy to see how homeowners might grow a little bored by these rooms. The cost of a kitchen remodel won’t be cheap, as the home improvement resource Angi.com notes that the typical cost of such a project in the United States is between $13,000 and $38,000. Angi.com estimates even indicate that a high-end remodel could cost homeowners as much as $61,000. That’s beyond many homeowners’ budgets. But the good news is that there are many quick and easy, not to mention less expensive, ways to give a kitchen a new look.
• Repaint and restyle the cabinets. Cabinet space is an undeniably precious commodity in a kitchen, especially as more and more homeowners embrace their inner chef and cook more complicated meals at home. After all, the more expansive a home chef’s culinary repertoire, the more space that person needs to store all the tools of the cooking trade. A full cabinet replacement is unnecessary if the cabinets are still functional and not overcrowded, so repainting them can be a great way to give the kitchen a new look while keeping costs
reasonable. During the painting project, homeowners can install new cabinet knobs and/or drawer pulls to freshen up the style of the cabinets even further.
• Install under-cabinet lighting. Another inexpensive way to give a kitchen a new look is to install undercabinet lighting. Undercabinet lighting serves both an aesthetic and practical purpose. From a purely aesthetic standpoint, under-cabinet lighting can make a kitchen feel more warm and keep the kitchen illuminated when meals aren’t being prepared and homeowners don’t want to have their overhead lights on but still want to be able to navigate the kitchen safely. During meal prep, under-cabinet lighting can illuminate counters so it’s easier to chop, peel and perform other prep tasks.
• Replace existing backsplash. Replacing backsplash is another simple, inexpensive and effective way to give a kitchen a new feel. Homeowners can opt for something neutral that won’t upset their existing decor or go with a
more bold backsplash that immediately draws the attention of anyone who enters the room. This simple job can be done by the average do-it-yourselfer and the cost of new backsplash won’t break the bank.
• Replace existing seating. Whether you have an island countertop with bar stools or a breakfast nook with cushioned seats, replacing the seating is a budget-friendly job that can create a new look when entering the room. Countertop bar stools come in many styles, so giving this area of the kitchen a new feel can be as simple as shifting from classic, high-back stools to more modern swivel stools with a chrome base. For the breakfast nook, replacing a light-colored bench cushion with a bolder alternative can instantly transform the look of the space.
Kitchen remodels can break the bank. But there’s a host of budget-friendly ways for cost-conscious homeowners to revitalize these popular spaces in their homes.

Tech to make gardening more fun
Many people take to the great outdoors to escape the increasingly tech-driven daily grind. Though that’s an understandable perspective, gardeners who aren’t deploying tech in their home gardens could be missing out on a host of benefits that could help their plants, flowers and vegetables thrive. Devices like smartphones and tablets have made many aspects of life easier and more efficient, and various tech products can do the same when working in the garden.
• Plant monitor: Plant monitors are sensors that can keep tabs on the health of plants and deliver that information to gardeners. Plant monitors often connect to smartphones via Bluetooth and can deliver information on the amount of heat, light and water a plant is getting. Sensors vary in price, and some will provide more information than others. But these sensors are ideal for gardeners who love their plants but often
Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.
Jeremiah 33:3
forget to check up on them each day.
• Garden camera: Critters and insects are the bane of many gardeners’ existence. Determining just what is nibbling away at flowers and plants isn’t always so easy, as many animals are savvy enough to restrict their dining to the middle of the night and insects are so small they can be hard to spot. Garden cameras can serve as the watchmen of a garden and gardeners can review footage to determine just who is compromising all of their hard work. They can then use that knowledge to remedy the situation and give their plants a better chance to thrive.
• Weather station: Even the most seasoned gardeners cannot document the conditions outside as effectively as a good weather sensor. Weather sensors track conditions such as temperature, relative humidity and air quality. This information can then be paired with irriga-
tion devices to ensure plants get all the care they need to thrive throughout the season.
• Garden hub: Avid gardeners have traditionally had to arrange for neighbors or loved ones to tend to their plants when they leave home for vacation or weekend getaways. Garden hubs can take care of that by pairing with smart irrigation systems that ensure plants are watered even when no one is home. Certain hubs even gather and analyze local weather conditions to develop a watering schedule to ensure plants thrive. These hubs aren’t just handy when on vacation, as they can be great for gardeners who want to know things about their plants that are not apparent to the naked eye.
People may see their gardens as welcome respites from their devices. But garden gadgets can help plants thrive and make time in the garden that much more enjoyable.

The Great Physician
(4th & Final Part of “MAYDAY” Series)
is as certain as His forgiveness. Just as He cleanses us from sin, He also has the power to restore our health.
POWERFUL PRAYER
plan.
PRAY THIS PRAYER:
DANYALE PATTERSON
When illness strikes, it can be a profoundly unsettling experience. Our bodies, which we often take for granted, suddenly become frail and vulnerable. In these moments of weakness, turning to the Lord for comfort and healing can bring immense peace and strength. God, in His infinite mercy, is our ultimate healer, offering us both physical and spiritual restoration. The Bible is filled with assurances of God’s healing power. One of the most comforting passages is found in Psalm 103:2-5 (NLT), where David exclaims, “Let all that I am praise the LORD; may I never forget the good things he does for me. He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!” These verses remind us that God’s ability to heal
In times of sickness, prayer becomes our most potent tool. James 5:14-15 (NLT) advises, “Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven…” This passage emphasizes the power of communal prayer and faith in invoking God’s healing. It’s also essential to remember that while we seek physical healing, God’s ultimate plan for us is holistic. Sometimes, His healing comes in ways we do not expect. Whether through medical intervention, a miraculous recovery, the strength to endure or a promotion to heaven, God’s hand is at work, orchestrating our lives for our ultimate good. Remember, in sickness and in health, God is with us, guiding us towards wholeness in His divine
“Father, I praise you as Jehovah Rapha, God our healer. Not only do you have many precious promises in your word about healing, but you created our bodies to naturally heal itself. Also, the Bible says that Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching, preaching, and healing all kinds of sickness and disease among the people. Jesus Christ is the same today, yesterday, and forevermore. I am grateful, Lord, that I can call on you when I am in pain or don’t feel well. You are a good God and I thank you for your love and healing power. Nothing is impossible for you. “In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
CONNECTING TO GOD:
I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. By dedicating time each day to reading the Bible and praying, you can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God.

CORNERSTONE CHURCH OF GOD
“Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever.”

Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ
By Gary Miller
I was in my early thirties when I had my first lesson about cattle and farming. I don’t remember how I was introduced to Daryl and I don’t remember why I was initially on his farm, but there I was, watching a cow in a headgate try to give birth to a calf that was breach, and had already died within the mother. The stress from Daryl and others trying to pull the calf out, caused the mother to die on the spot. For them, it was another day on the farm. For me, it was the beginning of something that still remains almost unexplainable. To describe how green I was, at the time I didn’t know the difference between a bull, cow, heifer, or steer. I thought they were all just cows and calves. I can remember wondering where they went to get inside from the harsh weather. For the next several years, I learned so much about everything that had to do with cattle and farm life. I was taught everything from how to operate a tractor to how to vaccinate livestock – and even how to buy a cow/calf pair at the sale. And in the meantime, I was having my first experiences as a solo deer and turkey hunter. My first buck came from that property. As did my first turkey. The memories have flooded back lately. Daryl and I were separated by time, family, and circumstances. We even lost contact until recently. After our reintroduction, it seemed like nothing had changed. He bossed me like he did over 25 years ago, and I fussed, offered my own opinion, and then did what he said. And then I went to those 400 acres that I had not been on since that time. And again, the memories were overwhelming. Simply overwhelming. In the past few weeks I have driven, walked, and hunted in some of the same steps I did years ago. I have been reminded of the lessons and lectures. I still use them today. We both wonder if God has brought all of this full circle for a reason. We’ll know soon. Maybe I can introduce another green hunter/farmer to lessons that not only apply to the farm, but to everything else in life.

How to prepare for drought in advance
Drought is becoming a more frequent problem. According to NASA, the last 20 years have produced some of the driest conditions in the American west on record. When drought occurs, it is now more severe and pervasive than it once was, which underscores the importance of planning for drought before it occurs.
Government efforts to combat climate change, which NASA indicates is behind the increase in drought over the last two decades, might produce large scale change needed to protect against drought. But there’s also steps private homeowners can take to prepare for drought before it occurs.
CROSSWORD PUZZLE
• Check your well pump regularly. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security urges homeowners who have a well pump on their properties to check them regularly for leaks. If the pump turns on and off while water is not being used, it has a leak. Addressing the leak promptly helps to conserve water, which is one of the most effective means to combatting drought.
• Plant native species. The U.S. Forest Service notes that native plants are adapted to the local climate and soil conditions. That means they will require less water and will be hardy enough to withstand heat waves in areas where especially high summer temperatures are the norm.
• Raise the blades on your lawn mower. The DHS notes that lawn mower blades raised to at least three inches encourage grass roots to grow deeper and hold soil moisture. That can help lawns survive drought without much intervention, including extra water during times when water restrictions are in place.
• Reseed lawns with drought in mind. When reseeding a lawn, consider the potential for drought. The DHS recommends individuals in areas affected or likely to be affected by drought

plant drought-resistant lawn seed. Drought-resistant grasses, which include Bermuda and Zoysia grass, can withstand prolonged periods without water. However, before reseeding, consult a local lawn and garden professional to ensure the grass will thrive in your area.
• Devise a wise watering strategy. Come late spring, devise a watering strategy to take you through the dog days of summer. Water-efficient irrigation systems can protect flowers, plants and shrubs during prolonged periods marked by little to no precipitation. In addition, less water will be lost to evaporation when watering during early morning or evening hours when temperatures tend to be less extreme and the sun is not as high. If possible, hand water during these times of day or set irrigation system timers to do so.
Dry conditions are more common today than they were 20 years ago. That reality means homeowners must plan ahead as they try to help their lawns and gardens survive drought.
