It’s an unfortunate fact that sometimes youths become involved in activities or lifestyles that cause them to come in contact with the court system or other agencies and that’s where the Cleveland County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (JCPC) often steps up to help.
JCPC has identified a variety of youth-centric services needed in Cleveland County including: Individual/Group/Mixed Counseling, Interpersonal Skill Building, Services addressing Problem Sexual Behavior, Mentoring, psychological Assessment, Family Counseling, and Tutoring/Academic En-

Sara Brunner, District 27 Chief Court Counselor, explained how the money is given out.
“The funding is based on the county’s juvenile population, and the services that get funded are based off of risk/need data for court involved and at risk
Assembly to the N.C. Dept. of Public Safety. We receive our disbursement from the Community Programs Section of the Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and the funding is managed by Cleveland County Finance.”
Volunteerism is at the heart of JCPC. Volunteer Margie Christopher stressed that fact.
“The whole council is made up of volunteers from the agencies,” she said. “This whole process involves a village.” See JUVENILE, Page 8

Preparing Today’s Students to Become Tomorrow’s Leaders
By Gary Miller
Local farmers have been cutting hay. On a normal year, most fields will be cut twice. The amount of rainfall, however, always determines whether there is a lack or an abundance. The first cutting is usually in late May or June. This gives the grass another opportunity to produce before the drought of summer stunts it for the year. One of the tragedies that always happens is the death of newborn fawns. Unfortunately, these young deer lay in the field, thinking they are hiding, and are killed by the farmer’s tractor or the hay implements. It happens every year. There’s a mechanism and trait that nature has given these new-born deer. They are scent free and the white dots on their sides act as visual camouflage as well. If these fawns cannot be smelled or seen, they are most likely not going to be discovered by a predator. This is also the reason they refuse to move when unusual activity happens around them. Again, they have the built-in mechanism to remain still to not be detected. Unfortunately, if they are hidden in a hay field, this same trait that is supposed to protect them, instead causes their death.
All of nature is uniquely balanced in the same way. If this balance is maintained, there is harmony, and creation moves as God intended. When the balance moves in an extreme direction one way or the other, this harmony is lost. And in the case of nature, something usually dies. Look at any scenario and you will see that extremes are always lacking, and balance is always more complete and less fragile. I find this true also with human nature. I find it equally important for Christians. Extremism in Christianity produces division and fosters hatred. It has no choice but to be legalistic and by default judgmental. It can be prideful and exclusive. And none of these characteristics describe the grace of God that was given to us, nor the grace of God we are to give to others. Grace is messy. Its parameters are not easily defined. Its rules are not easily understood. I believe God wanted it that way. That way, when we don’t know the answer or what to do, we will always default to “I will love my neighbor as myself.”

On June 5, JCPC members met at the Cleveland Country Club to celebrate the organization’s good work and to recognize folks who played an especially important role in it.
At the appreciation banquet, representatives of each of the funded agencies reported on their activities of the past year. The list included Derrick Harris of Freedom House reporting on PORT (substance abuse services), Common Sense Parenting and Hand Up Solutions; Beth Fox of the Mediation Center reporting on Teen Court, Juvenile Mediation and Community Service and Restitution; Rodney Borders from Cleveland County Schools reporting on Cleveland Early Interventions; Kimberly Townsend from ASPIRE reporting on Kids at Work and Dawn Stover from CORE services reporting on Adversity Impact Assessments.
Certificates of appreciation were given to Sherrie Geer, Chair of the Monitoring Committee, Kevin Oliver, Chair of the Planning Committee and Margie Christopher, Chair of the Allocations Committee.
Jamey Davis, Chair of JCPC thanked each for their leadership then recognized all members of the Council for their service.
The Juvenile Court Counselor staff were thanked for their service to the youth of Cleveland County and to their supervisor who is Brunner.
A special award went to Greg Ledford, owner of Community First Media Group. Ledford was given a plaque of appreciation from Christopher. The recognition was for the fact that Ledford publishes twice a year and free of charge in the Kings Mtn. Herald and Shelby Shopper an ad announcing the availability of JCPC funds and the information on how to apply for them.
Christopher explained why Ledford was honored.
“We are required to notify non-profits and the general public when funds become available,” she said. “Greg has for at least twenty years published this information. He’s been very generous to the council in getting the information out.”
Ledford says he is amazed at the work the JCPC does.
“It is a great honor to be part of the JCPC’s success and to help them,” he said. “I am blown away by the number of programs that JCPC funds and impressed by how dedicated our law enforcement is engaged with the program. To hear the
success stories from JCPC shows how vital its hard work is to our youth and our community.”
The excellent evening of accolades and amiability concluded with a report by Melissa Johnson, JCPC Area Consultant, who spoke about the NC SAFE campaign, a state level initiative for securing firearms.

BRGS building fund drive underway
Broad River Genealogy Society (BRGS) urgently needs support to raise funds to expand its current building. While many local genealogical societies have faded due to the rise of online resources like Ancestry. com, the BRGS remains vibrant and essential.
BRGS is a treasure trove of local historical data that isn’t available on the internet. It offers personalized service and dedicated assistance in locating information. Our volunteers go above and beyond to an-
swer every query, regardless of whether the requester is a member or not. This dedication stems from our passion for preserving history and aiding individuals on their personal ancestry journeys.
The organization firmly believes in the value of its organization and its mission to continue preserving and expanding its collection of family histories, Bibles, journals, and personal data, we need to expand our building. The increasing cost of construction has caught us off guard, making your support
more critical than ever.
In a press release last week, it shared, “We are fortunate to have the support of Bob Smith from Tally and Smith Architects, who is generously providing all architectural services free of charge, including drawing plans, contacting engineers, and overseeing the project.
‘Your contribution will help us continue our mission of preserving history and assisting those on their ancestry journeys. Together, we can ensure that the Broad River Genealogical Soci-
ety remains a vital resource for future generations.
“We are much more than a mere “research for records” organization. Thank you for considering our request. Your support makes a significant difference, and any donation, no matter how small, is appreciated,” the board members shared.

MULLS MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH
Humility is often misunderstood in our world, where pride and self-promotion are loudly celebrated.
True Humility isn’t about thinking less of ourselves; it’s about thinking of ourselves less. It’s recognizing our worth in God’s eyes while understanding that others are equally important.
I Peter 5:5b (NIV) encourages us, “...All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
Just as we dress ourselves each day, we must consciously choose to put on humility, allowing it to shape our interactions and decisionsSweet Fruit
Humility begins with our relationship with God. As a fruit of the Spirit, we can rely on God to cultivate a posture of humility within us. Throughout my journey with the Lord, the Holy Spirit has often prompted me to take actions I hadn’t planned, such as apologizing to someone or holding my tongue when I felt like lashing out. The Holy Spirit acts as a coach, guiding us to stay humble if we surrender to His direction. By acknowledging God’s greatness and our dependence on Him, we position ourselves to receive His grace. In this posture of humility, we discover our true strength, as God empowers us by his Spirit.
Psalm 18:32 (NIV) says, “It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure.”
Jesus Exemplified Humility Consider the example of Jesus, the epitome of humility. Philip-
pians 2:5-8 (NIV) says, “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!”
Jesus, the King of kings, chose the path of humility. He served others, washed His disciples’ feet, and ultimately sacrificed His life for us. His humility wasn’t weakness but incredible strength. It was a powerful act of love and obedience to the Father. By following His example, we too can demonstrate humility in our daily lives.
PRAY THIS PRAYER:
“Father, you are great and greatly to be praised. Help me to keep my eyes on you and off myself. Forgive me for pride that
showed up in my thoughts, emotions, words, and actions. Manifest the fruit of humility in my life. I am open to your guidance, strength, and wisdom. Open my eyes to see how I can be a blessing to others through humility. In Jesus’ name - Amen.”
and feel welcomed as you feel the presence of God in our church. Pastor Jimmy Black SERVICE TIMES: SUNDAY, 10:30 AM WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY, 6:00 PM (4th & Final Part of “Pride” Series)
CONNECTING TO GOD: I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.
