Executive Director’s Statement Nancy Campbell
It is with great pleasure and pride that I welcome you to the 10th Anniversary Wayne Plein Air Festival. The Wayne Plein Air Festival has continued to grow over the years and has earned a place today among the top Plein Air Festivals presented nationally. We applaud the 32 artists who painted for four and a half days and collectively completed 268 works to help us celebrate this important milestone year. We extend our gratitude to our juror, T. Allen Lawson, who so thoughtfully selected each artist to participate and presented over $15,000 in awards raised by the Wayne Art Center at the opening Preview Party. Congratulations to this year’s plein air artists who travelled to the Wayne area from throughout the country to participate in this important milestone year! Why is the Wayne Plein Air Festival so eagerly anticipated as a leading cultural event and one which continues to attract thousands of attendees and art collectors each year? First and foremost, our area is amazingly beautiful, especially in May! The intimate private gardens and arboretums; Delaware and Chester County farms with breath-taking hills and vistas; woods and streams, towns with historical architecture as well as notable institutions that date back centuries - all contribute fuel to an artist’s imagination. Our Plein Air Committee, artist housing hosts and community members welcome our Plein Air Artists each year with open arms and gracious, unsurpassed hospitality. The Wayne Plein Air Festival would not be possible without the generous and ongoing support of the Wayne Art Center Board of Directors, Plein Air Committee, sponsors, patrons, artist housing hosts, volunteers, guests and visitors. I would like to thank this year’s co-chairs, Lindsay Dubarry and Debbie Craley, and honorary chairs, Barbara Berry and Ann McIlvain, as well as the entire Plein Air Committee whose tireless energy and enthusiasm make this festival such an enjoyable experience and wonderful success. A special word of thanks to our presenting sponsor, West Laurel Hill Cemetery and Funeral Home, our key sponsor, Charles Schwab, our major award sponsor, the Archie W. and Grace Berry Foundation, and the growing list of sponsors and patrons who provide support for this monumental endeavor that furthers the Wayne Art Center’s core mission of enriching our community through the arts. I would also like to thank all of the dedicated Wayne Art Center staff who collaboratively assisted with the various aspects of organizing this event and especially Karen Louise Fay, Director of Special Projects, for all for her efforts in planning and coordinating the 10th Anniversary Wayne Plein Air Festival! 8
Juror’s Statement
T. Allen Lawson
Several weeks ago I had the pleasure of visiting Wayne, Pennsylvania as the juror for their 10th annual Plein Air Festival. I was greatly impressed. The center of Wayne is its historic downtown which is quaint without being cute. It’s the type of town that still has its theater, the Anthony Wayne, right on the main street, not some multi-cinema complex stuck out on the edge. The area around Wayne is some of the most beautiful country in all of North America. And if Wayne, at times, appears somewhat old fashioned or sleepy, its Art Center is anything but. The Wayne Art Center is an impressive facility full of constant activity. When so many art programs across the entire country are being down-sized or completely scraped, Nancy Campbell and Karen Louise Fay and have created a remarkable, vibrant center—a hub of seemingly endless activity. The Wayne Plein Air Festival is very well organized. It attracts quality painters, from near and far, and offers some a wide variety of subject matter to paint. I was complimented to be asked to judge the exhibition. I am grateful for having been made aware of the Wayne Art Center and I have to admit, I was a bit envious of the artists who were able to spend the week and paint the exquisite scenery in and around Wayne… though I already look forward to returning to Wayne where I plan to explore the area in depth and do some painting of my own. Thank you, Nancy. Thank you, Karen Louise. Thank you, Wayne, PA for giving the arts such fertile grounds to blossom. May the example you have set spread throughout the country.

What is
Plein Air?
Winslow Homer. Artists Sketching in the White Mountains. 1868. Oil on panel. Portland Museum of Art.
En plein air is a French expression meaning “in the open air”, and refers to the act of painting outdoors with the artist’s subject in full view. Plein air artists capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject by incorporating natural light, color and movement into their works. The high point of plein air art came with the emergence of Impressionism in the mid-tolate 19th century. Artists of that period included Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Cezanne and Van Gogh. Interest in outdoor painting has remained constant since the 20th century. Today’s artists carry on the traditions of these past masters by capturing light and movement in landscapes that can only come from seeing the subject outdoors in its natural form. The last twenty years have seen a resurgence of interest in plein air painting in the United States. During this time, groups of plein air painters began gathering together to paint at single locations or within certain geographic boundaries. These “paint outs” are now very popular and give artists a chance to share their talents and creativity with the public and with one another.

About Wayne
Plein Air
Modern plein air painting with an audience.
The Wayne Art Center Plein Air Festival is an exciting opportunity to bring valued talent to our community. Over half of the artists come from other regions stretching up and down the East Coast and Midwest. This year with the growing awareness of the Wayne Plein Air Festival, there has been an increase in the number of applicants and the festival is attracting artists from as far away as California. The first Wayne Plein Air Festival was held in 2007 with the intention of making it an annual event. Artists had to mail in slides or CDs with their artwork for juror Sara Linda Poly to review. The 33 participating artists were primarily from the East Coast, although a few came in from the Midwest to paint in Wayne. The paintings were displayed in the newly-completed, bright and spacious Davenport Gallery, and the Preview Party was held in the new Vidinghoff Lobby, taking full advantage of our 2007 renovation and expansion. Over the course of ten years, Wayne Plein Air Festival has grown to be one of the most well-respected painting events on the East Coast. The application process is now fully online, attracting the foremost plein air artists from across the country. The paintings produced are displayed across the Art Center in the Davenport, Vidinghoff and Outer Galleries, and over 250 guests attend the Preview Party to have the first chance to see the new artwork. Thanks to generous sponsors and patrons, we are now able to offer ever-increasing awards in recognition of the artists’ talents. 11

Nancy T. Baker Thomaston, ME
Nancy Baker was born in Texas with an aversion to heat. She has since been on a northerly migration and in 2008 settled on the coast of Maine. Her career began in 1980 in NYC where she trained at the Isabel O’Neill Studio for the Art of the Painted Finish. In 1986 she founded a decorative arts company in the Washington D.C. area. Working in residential and commercial settings her company specialized in custom murals, painted finishes, furniture and decorative arts. In the mid-90’s Nancy’s attention turned back to drawing and painting, which a high school teacher had nurtured and inspired. She studied drawing and painting at the Corcoran College of the Arts and the Yellow Barn Studio in Maryland. She has continued to study independently with several contemporary realists whose work is marked by strong drawing, an appreciation of abstraction and solid design skills. She completed a residency in painting at the Vermont Studio Center, has participated in national juried plein-air competitions, exhibited throughout the Mid-Atlantic and New England and is represented by Mars Hall Gallery in Tenants Harbor, Maine. Nancy is the parent of four young women and in addition to painting is passionately involved in organizations committed to children’s health and education.

For a few years, Al was a forestry-educator and taught post-secondary education. However, for forty years, Al has been a full-time artist who specializes in smaller-sized paintings. Since 2007, Al has continuously exhibited at the Modern Marine Masters and Mystic Marine International Invitational exhibitions at Mystic Seaport, Connecticut. D. Eleinne Basa Jackson, NJ
A Classically trained artist, D. Eleinne Basa began painting at the young age of eight. Her early training still influences her and she still remembers painting plein air in oils as early as age nine. Eleinne’s landscapes allure the viewer to move into the work with their radiant light and luminescent qualities reminiscent of the early Luminists and American Tonalists. She is inspired by painters like Thomas Moran and George Inness, and is continually striving to achieve a certain timelessness to her work. A professional and full time artist since 2004, Eleinne participates in national and museum invitational shows. She has also been invited to show her works at the National Arts Club and the Salmagundi Club in New York, the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the CM Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana, the Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, and in 2012 at the Autry National Center as part of the 101st Gold Medal Show of the California Art Club where she received an Art of the West Award of Excellence. In 2012, she won the $15,000 Grand Prize of the 1st Annual Plein Air Salon, hosted by Plein Air Magazine.

Zufar Bikbov Oakville, CT
Zufar Bikbov was born in 1974 in the Kazan suburbs of Russia. His interest in painting came from his father. Ahkat Bikbov, a well respected engineer, could not study in Nikolay Fechin’s Art School in Kazan because he grew up during the Stalin regime. Times were different for Zufar; he studies art and graduated Cum Laude from Zelenodolsk Art School. When the time came for Zufar to choose a college and a profession, he was called to medicine. Zufar studied medicine, did a residency and moved to the United States, but his art remained an essential part of his life. He was honored to exhibit his art at “Doctors Paint” in the State Museum of Fine Arts in Kazan and at the Yale Medical School in New Haven, CT. Zufar’s landscapes and townscapes are reminiscent of Soviet era Impressionism with elements of abstraction. For him, art is continuous experimentation and growth. During the last 12 years, his paintings, mostly of the Northeastern shoreline, have become more creative, artistic and recognized as superior works of art. During the past decade, Zufar has won awards at several national competitions. The award he most treasures is the Artist Choice award at Plein Air Easton. Another was the Medal of Honor and Merit from the Kent Art Association.

Mark Boedges Shelburne, VT
An up and coming artist, Mark Boedges has in a short time amassed numerous awards and shown his work in many galleries. Although art was always a part of his life, Mark came to painting in a more serious manner only during, and immediately after, college. Out of high school he attended the University of Kansas where he received a degree in philosophy. But by then the painting bug, and in particular painting plein air, had already taken hold. He went back to school to study fine art at the University of Colorado. Preferring a more traditional approach to painting, Mark left the program after two years to study exclusively from nature. Painting plein air had become his sole focus, and it would remain so for several years. Through this study his skills quickly developed. His first show was in 2003 and it was a great success, nearly selling out. But all artists need mentoring, and realizing that in order to further progress he needed guidance, Mark began to seek out other artists and to attend workshops to learn everything he could about his craft; which he continues to do to this day. Among the top honors Mark has received are the Grand Prize for Landscape and a spot on the cover of International Artist Magazine, as well as more recently the Joseph Hartley Memorial award at the prestigious Salmagundi Club in New York City, Best in Show at the American Impressionist Society’s National Exhibition and Best in Show at the Scottsdale Salon of Fine Art.

He is best known for his intimate still life paintings and his landscapes of the Delaware Valley area including New Jersey. Robert also runs Landscape Painting Philadelphia, a group that he operates free of charge for those who are interested in plein air. Brienne M. Brown Julian, PA
From a young age, Brienne Brown loved art but pursued a career in science. After graduating with a Master’s degree in Chemistry, she soon found that art was more than a hobby, it was a necessity. She left her toxicology job and began painting more consistently. Soon she was not only exhibiting and entering shows regularly, but also winning awards. Her passion is watercolor and plein air. She loves using the slightly controlled chaos nature of watercolor in bringing the everyday to life. She holds signature status in several Watercolor Societies. Brienne’s work can be seen in Splash 17: Inspired Subjects and the Oct/Nov 2015 issue of Plein Air Magazine. Brienne says about her work: “I find beauty in everyday life, the so called ‘mundane’. Ordinary people going about their everyday lives inspire me. I especially enjoy painting en plein air, where each painting reminds me of where I was, of the experiences I had, the sounds, smells, and the people I met. As I try and capture the essence of a scene, my paintings are always more about a moment in time than about a particular location. I enjoy sharing how I see the world.”

Valerie Craig St. David’s, PA
Valerie Craig has drawn and painted nearly all of her life. Known for her impressionist approach to color and light, Valerie’s subject matter includes urban and rural landscapes as well as intimate still life paintings, and figures within a landscape.
She has had more than twenty years in the field to date, painting in both watercolor and oils. Like most artists, Valerie continues to be a student of art, always reaching for a higher level of excellence, while discovering and expressing her own voice. In 1998, Valerie left her career in nursing administration to pursue her passion for painting on a full-time basis. She feels that her best expressions happen when she is on location and can directly sense the mood and atmosphere of a particular scene. Whether painting vast open areas or intimate spaces, she finds that capturing light and color is best accomplished through close observation and careful study. Valerie teaches workshops and has been invited to be the juror for professional art exhibitions. Her work is represented in corporate, private and museum collections across the country.

Tim Kelly, from Baltimore, is a Maryland Institute, College of Art graduate, where he majored in illustration. After graduating, he embarked on a freelance illustration career which lasted about 10 years. A career change and a hiatus from artistic pursuits followed. Tim entered his first organized plein air event in 2011 and has been a frequent and avid participant in such events since then. Tim’s plein air work prioritizes observational fidelity and directly stated paint application. Almost all of his plein air efforts are completed in single sessions without studio corrections. Jim Laurino Burlington, CT
Jim Laurino is a representational landscape painter whose style has been heavily influenced by American and French impressionist painters. A Connecticut native, he draws inspiration from nature; the changing seasons, farmland vistas, and the geography of his home state. Like most landscape painters, he has favored locations and strives to work on site whenever possible. Jim studied fine art at the University of Connecticut. As a high school student he was fortunate to receive basic painting instruction from notable marine painters Carl G. Evers and Christopher Blossom. Through select workshop attendance and continuous self-study, Jim has cultivated a painting style which allows significant room for expression, while maintaining a strong representational foundation. Employing visually stimulating blends of rich and muted colors with a lyrical sense of drawing and design, Jim delivers a body of work which has common appeal. He has received numerous awards for his paintings, most recently a 2nd place finish in the 2015 Finger Lakes Plein air competition (NY State).

Chuck Marshall Wilmington, OH
Chuck Marshall (Charles W. Marshall, Jr.) was born in Wilmington, Ohio, on December 7, 1957. The small town of New Antioch, about 7 miles outside of Wilmington, became home to Chuck, his one brother, five sisters, mother and father. The surrounding area was known for its agriculture - mainly hogs and corn. So Chuck grew up working farms and spending time in his father’s construction trade, but he knew he wanted to do something different with his life - he knew he was going to be an artist from a very early age. He would spend hours each day sketching images of fields, hillsides, and animals that he would see while roaming the countryside. Laila Raslan Jamesville, NY
Emerging artist Laila Raslan was born and raised in Syracuse, New York. Primarily though not exclusively interested in landscape, Laila is drawn mostly to what she terms “anonymous spaces.” Much of her work depicts scenes that could exist in various locations, or the beauty in the commonly overlooked. Laila’s path to fine art has taken unexpected turns, including a hiatus, which left her believing art would be peripheral in her life. However, in the mid 2000’s, her passion for art was not only reignited but deepened also. She describes her return to art creation and deeper appreciation of art as “God-given, a gift from Christ that enriches and beautifies my life.” Laila’s artistic influences are varied, initiating with the chiaroscuro forms of Renaissance paintings and the grand idyllic landscapes of the Hudson River School to contemporary masters such as T. Allen Lawson and Marc Hanson. Through viewing the work of others, she has gained a greater appreciation and understanding of the natural world. As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. “My desire is always to depict something fundamentally elusive, moments of the fleeting mixed with my own experiences of place and time, something that resonates with me personally. I may not be able to achieve this goal, but I continually desire to reach it.”
