First of all, I would like to thank Nancy Campbell, Executive Director, and Karen Louise Fay, Director of Exhibitions and Events, of the Wayne Art Center for an invitation and a great collaboration in the past couple of months to prepare for the Making Marks exhibition. I appreciate their deep interest in the fiber and textile medium and their enthusiastic support of Making Marks. As an educator, I have experienced how the fiber and textile medium has had such a broad arrange of historic processes and techniques among crafts, and it is often impossible to comprehend the content of so many processes all at once. In this exhibition, my focus was to bring contemporary fiber works that reflect not only the rich tradition but also an innovative way of making through a variety of processes. Making Marks presents the manifestation of each artist’s approach of creating marks through their own specific methodologies. I admire these selected artists who have different sensibilities of making.

MAKING
marks
a fiber and textile exhibition
Selecting different generations in this exhibition was an important factor. Technology has been so advanced, and we breathe with the digital device everyday of our lives. I was hoping to bring artists from different generations to communicate not only with audience but also among us in the same space for communication and understanding. What elements impact our lives and our work, and how do artists in different generations affect and influence each other? How do conventional and unconventional methodologies and technologies affect on process of making during our current time? I am curious to have feedback and discussion about our field through this exhibition. On a final note, the Making Marks artists are invited to the International Fiber Art Fair in Korea in June 2017. I am thrilled to work with these artists and discuss with them my many questions about art in our current time in the fiber and textile field.
