» You can’t be a rebel and not be willing to take the consequences.«

In March, Madonna released her 13th studio album, Rebel Heart and made another change of style and musical direction which have been numerous for the soon to be 57-year old singer. Despite over 30 years in the business, she still has the ability to provoke whilst developing her artistry. “I see myself as a rebel, someone who asks questions… someone who protests too much… or maybe not enough, who questions convention, who thinks outside the box, who doesn’t take the road most travelled. At the end of the day, it’s the rebels, like Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Bob Marley and John Lennon who have

changed the world. You can’t be a rebel and not be willing to take the consequences.” Do you see yourself as misunderstood? ”I have opinions. What else can you do if you’re an artist? I like to think that my songs will find the audience that they are meant to find. And the people who can’t understand them or can’t connect to them, well, they’ll find something else that they like.”

Madonna

» My lyrics usually deal with my own feelings, but sometimes I do not want to be so direct or specific.«

How did the idea for Rebel Heart come about? “My original intention was that I was just going to sit with various songwriters and write songs. That was my goal. I’m just going to write songs and I want all the songs I write to be something that I could sit and strum a guitar to and sing from top to bottom without any other people involved.” “I started going out to various producers to work with. Sometimes I would get together with producers, like Diplo for instance, and they would have ideas for songs that I hadn’t written already.” “Then I started to pick up steam with sounds and producers. Then I started going in directions (while) I was also still in songwriting mode. And then I would bring along some of the songwriters I had in the beginning, along with some of the producers, because I really loved working with Toby Gad and Mozella as songwriters.” “So, I ended up bringing them (back) into the mix once I started working with various producers. So, like I said, it was a train – people getting off and getting back on the train, until the very end. I didn’t have a specific vision except I wanted to explore the duality of my personality which is renegade – romantic. And I wanted to write good songs. That’s it.” The album, which has guest appearances from Kanye West, Avicii, Nicki Minaj and Mike Tyson(!) amongst others, has been well received around the world. Critics have called it her strongest album for over a decade and with over 300 million sold records that is a lot to live up to. Above all, it feels like Madonna

12 WHERE TO GO 02.15

has found her way home instead of the desperate search for a new hyper-modern sound. Like David Bowie and U2, Madonna is best when she shoves everyone to the side and just tells it to us straight without the elaborate over-production. In which way do you think your lyrics have affected people? “It gives me a lot of satisfaction to know that I was somehow involved with liberating people – making somebody feel proud of who they are or liberating someone in making them feel good about what they stand for. My lyrics usually deal with my own feelings, but sometimes I do not want to be so direct or specific. I would like to be more mysterious, but I guess it’s all about what mood I’m in.” How should we enjoy Rebel Heart? “It must be played LOUD!” The Rebel Heart world tour starts in August and reaches Stockholm, Sweden, 14th November and Herning, Denmark on 17th November.

Interest in restaurants and food destinations just seems to get bigger and bigger. he prestigious Michelin Guide released a stand-alone edition for the Nordic countries, Guide Michelin Nordic Cities, and the Swedish White Guide, released last year a guide to Denmark, to complement its Swedish and Nordic editions. In other words, it’s simmering in the Nordic region. Say new-Nordic kitchen and the one place you usually think of is Noma, Copenhagen’s famous restaurant, which has two Michelin stars and has been named the world's best several times.

But there is a lot more in the Danish capital, often mentioned as Scandinavia’s restaurant centre. Interest in food and the number of bars and restaurants has literally exploded. Over 20 new restaurants opened last year in Copenhagen. Everything from fine dining, to street food, all mixed up and where to go depends on what you fancy. Nørrebro has become hip with Jaegersbrogade and Torevhallerne, together with the equally hip and super trendy Vesterbro. On Papirøen, street food has a new hot spot, and in

nearby Christianshavn and Holmen the Michelin restaurants are being crowded in with popular bars and cafés. Add to that all the restaurants around areas such as Kongens Nytorv and further down around Nyhavn, then you start to understand the diversity of the Copenhagen restaurant scene. The Norwegian capital is also following the trend. The new Nordic food mixes with a keen interest in street food and ready for summer, Oslo will welcome up to twenty food trucks spread all over the city. In 02.15 WHERE TO GO 17

The relatively newly opened Mathallen food hall is also located here. Close to the Central Station is the new Østbanehallen, with another cluster of restaurants, pubs, cafés and Michelin restaurant Maeemo. Then up over Karl Johan and Stortingsgata you can find classics such as Theatercaféen. If you stick to the area around Karl Johan and Tjuvholmen/Aker Brygge then you can actually walk to most places. When we arrive in Stockholm, we have the same pleasant problems as the two other Scandinavian capitals, namely that there is so much to choose from. Even Stockholm’s restaurant scene seems to grow by the minute, despite the recurring problem of trying to reserve a table at the most popular places. Otherwise just choose what you are in the mood for: A little luxury and more fashionable around Ostermalm, Stureplan and Kungsholmen, the cosy restaurants of Gamla Stan, or the hip cafés and pub life in Södermalm, which is also home to the increasingly popular food stalls. No matter what you choose and wherever you want to travel, there is something for everyone in all three Scandinavian capitals. Food has become a reason in itself to visit.

Latest gadgets 1. Camcorder in a DSLR body Canon has released the XC10 camera with 4k resolution and an easy-to-use format, which looks like making it an attractive option for multimedia professionals. The built-in, optically stabilized, light sensitive zoom with a range of 24 to 240 millimetres, ensures that camera shake and vibration will not notice in the picture. The XC10 has a DSLR style body and also takes (we assume) really good still photographs, but with a 4K resolution, it is probably the filmmaker who will be rejoicing most. The Canon XC10 will be an expensive purchase though, costing in excess of E2,200.

2. Hottest right now? Huawei’s first smartwatch, Huawei Watch, was shown for the first time at the MWC show in Barcelona in early March - where it quickly became one of the show’s big talking points. The watch has a sleek rounded design halfway between a pilot and a costume watch. Thanks to a thinner strap, it has a more slender appearance than for instance the LG Watch Urbane. It comes complete with scratch-resistant sapphire glass which is the type “real” watches usually have and runs Android Wear software. Huawei Watch looks set to be released in black, silver and gold, with a leather or stainless steel strap. Our guess is that it will be released this summer.

3. Smart luxury watch

5. Smaller and cheaper 2-in-1 laptop

LG's Watch Urbane is described by LG as “a luxury watch with Android Wear” - and we agree. The sporty, stylish design comes in gold or silver with an alligator patterned leather strap. Urbane is definitely a “unisex” watch but it is very large and will probably look a little clumsy on a thinner wrist. There is no official launch date, though we believe it will be May or June, costing around E375.

The Microsoft Surface 3 is thin, fairly light and has exactly the same windows as its Pro siblings - but a lower price tag. Surface 3 Pro charmed us with its sharp display and thoughtful design. The exterior of the new Surface 3 is as usual - a solid metal chassis with an adjustable backrest in three positions. The size has been slimmed down from the Pro model’s 12-inch to 10,8. It weighs 622 grams, which is exactly halfway between the Surface 3 Pro and an iPad Air. The screen has a resolution of 1920x1280 pixels, which although good, is less than the Pro model. They claim the battery can handle ten hours of video viewing, which if true, is very impressive. Released 7 May, the device costs around E620.

4. iPhone-lookalike on a budget With competition much tougher on the budget shelf, ZTE’s new smartphone is both and sleek and fast. The Blade S6 has a 5-inch display with 720x1280 pixels. This is lower than the 1080x 920 that the better Android models usually have, but just marginally lower than the iPhone 6. The phone comes with a 13-megapixel camera. It runs Android Lollipop 5.0 with ZTE’s own start screen but with MiFavor 3.0 skin on top and is updated with a flatter, more modern design. The ZTE Blade S6 was released in April and retails from around E310.

SELFSURVEILLANCE Six years ago Chris Dancy was just a ‘an ordinary IT-guy’. But then he started using sensors to register almost everything he does. Now he travels around the world to explain about his life as ‘The most connected human on Earth’ – and how he lost 40 kilos with the help of his gadgets. Text: Peter Wiklund

24 WHERE TO GO 02.15

“Ok glass.” Chris Dancy suddenly requests his Google Glass to start filming as we sit and talk. These type of video notes are a part of the material which he regularly and often automatically, collects about his life. That was how it started six years previously, with Chris Dancy's intention to collate information about his own life. It appears that one of the main reasons as to why he started, was that he noticed how he much time he was spending online, on different social media channels. Here there was plenty of information about him, though he seldom had access to it himself. He became increasingly curious to learn more and at the same time do something to change his lifestyle. “I lived a very unhealthy, stressful life, smoking and drinking. I never ate fruit and vegetables”, he explains. When he started collating data of his life with the help of different sensors on and around his body, he quickly discovered obvious patterns emerging. Patterns which could be questioned and altered – so that he could make changes to improve his lifestyle. A concrete example was alcohol. When he noticed how much it punished his body, he became strongly motivated to change his habits. He doesn’t like to drink alcohol now, just because he knows how it affects his body. Before he started amassing all the statistics he was massively overweight. In just a couple of years he managed to lose 40 kilos, not only because he was eating healthier food, but mostly due to the fact that he could analyse

how different conditions and situations affected his eating habits. “I could see how I ate more when dining with certain people or how certain lighting or noise levels in the room affected how I ate.Yes, it affects everyone”, he says and pulls out his mobile phone to measure the noise level in the room. We sit quietly a while so that he can take a reading of the background noise. The meter stops at 55 decibels, and he nods satisfied. “It’s a good level. The light seems good too, we can eat here without to much stress. Though if we go to the nearest hamburger restaurant, then that is a different story, with lots of noise and bright lighting meaning we will be more stressed whilst eating. Which makes us feel worse.” he adds. The day we met he had eight ‘smart gadgets’ – or what we can call ‘wearable technology’ – on his person, complete with smartphone in both back pockets of his jeans. Though he isn’t too worried about being ‘under surveillance’, even if it is, according to him, fairly easy to come across the information about where he is and what he is doing. “I am simply not that interesting enough, that someone cares about what I do. Apart from my friends of course, and they have constant access to the information about me in realtime. They can see if I am awake, what I am listening to, where I am.” Otherwise he is not so interested in chatting via the net. He has no friends on Facebook, follows very few on Twitter and keeps down the amount of emails he sends.

“The more analogue the meeting is, the better. But digital contact can be a good substitute when a physical meeting isn’t possible. It means a lot to me to be able to see what my dogs are up to at home, thanks to the sensors they are wearing.” he explains. He is now looking forward to even more Wi-Fi gadgets to keep tabs on himself. For example, the Melon headband, which is said to be fully developed and used to register different types of brain activity including linking it with the exact location of the user. Or sensors that can measure exactly what your food and drink contains.

»...he had eight ‘smart gadgets’ on his person.« “That’s great, but if I could wish for something, then it would be a gadget to analyse my blood every day”, says Chris Dancy. Sure, he is interested in IT and likes new devices, another reason for his large data collection, but at the same time he is very mindful of obtaining printed documents, I notice. All the data he collects, and it really is a lot, is backed up as paper printouts. Which fill box after box in a locked storeroom. He also got back to me quickly when we had contact about pictures to this article.“Sure, I can pick a few you can use but as a ‘thanks for helping’ can I have a few copies of the magazine? I love paper!”

Nils Dardel and the modern age Nils Dardel is one of Sweden’s most popular artists. The exhibition Nils Dardel and the Modern Age presents a variety of iconic works including The Dying Dandy, Visit to an Eccentric Lady and Jealous Drama and shows primarily paintings and drawings. However there are even stage sets and music to the ballet Dårhuset plus a unique radio play where Thora Dardel tells of the time with Nils in Paris during the 1920’s. Ambiguity is present equally in his person and his works. Nils had a dual nature that attracts and is attracted by both men and women. Shown at the Moderna Museet in Malmö until 6 September.

Opera is for everyone! Copenhagen Opera Festival is taking the opera out of the traditional theatre and letting its sounds ring out over the streets, underground and waterways of Copenhagen. Central to the Copenhagen Opera Festival is the wish to create a new space for opera. An international forum where tradition can meet innovation, and talent can meet experience. Not least it seeks an audience also interested in art that seeks new boundaries. The festival is taking place between 26 July and 2 August.

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) and Edvard Munch (1863-1944 are two very distinctive and influential artists. Both created art with a strong emotional content expressed with a personal and innovative style, and both lived troubled lives. These two great artists will compete for the first time together in a dual exhibition based on a collaboration between two of the world’s leading monographic museums; the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Munch Museum. Van Gogh + Munch is shown at the Munch Museum in Oslo until 6 September.

Auto New Swedish sportscar launched Car dealer, Torbjörn von Braun is behind the project to launch a new Swedish sportscar. He is remodelling a 1990’s Indigo 3000 with both cosmetic and technical updates so the car will suit 2015. The original car was constructed by Jösse Car in Arvika, with a total of 43 vehicles leaving the factory, before production ground to a halt five years later. The cost of the car hasn’t been decided though initially just ten of the von Braun Indigo 3000R will be made.

Welcome to my world! Floyd Mayweather, boxing world champion, is a materialist and not ashamed of his assets. The 37-year-old is worth several million dollars and has a love for fast cars. In his garage you can find supercars such as the Ferrari 458 Spider, a Lamborghini Aventador, a Porsche 911 Turbo S and even three Bugatti Veyrons. Mayweather recently published a picture on Facebook standing in front of his car collection and private jet with the text "Welcome to my world". There are probably many who would like to live in his world...

Forgotten treasure Frenchman Roger Baillon bought cars at the same rate normal people buy socks. Between 1950-1970 his collection consisted of no less than 200 vehicles. The idea was to open a car museum, but the plan was shelved when he run in to financial difficulties during the 1970’s and was forced to sell off his collection. When Roger died it was thought that he had already sold all his cars, but that was not the case. Found in a barn were such treasures like a Ferrari California Spider from 1961. The cars were sold by auction, with the Italian beauty going for a cool E16,5 million and the total value of the remaining vehicles amounting to over E25million.

No Fords here thanks In the USA you can be sued for just about anything, anytime. A family in the town of Manlius, outside of New York, are being sued by a neighbour, for having parked their own car in their own drive-way. One might think that it concerns an old wreck but that is not the case. Actually, it is a Ford F- 150, America’s bestselling car that is parked in the drive. The car, a 2014 model, apparently isn’t good enough for the neighbours and now the feud will be settled in court as to whether the family can park their car in their own driveway or not.

Revenge is sweet As the male owner of an Audi R8 now knows. The man had been out on ‘an adventure’ and his wife caught him literally with his pants down. Although her anger at his infidelity was chanelled towards his prized possession - his brand new R8. The wife really went for it, smashing the windscreen and gouging the paintwork, carving nasty messages. In addition, she sliced up the leather upholstery, tore off the badges and smashed all the lights. What do we learn from this? Well, infidelity leaves deep marks in the paintwork!

New Bond film Autumn sees the premiere of 'Spectre' the new Bond film with Daniel Craig starring as agent 007. Craig will be behind the wheel of an Aston Martin DB10 whilst the bad guys get the keys to a Jaguar C-X75. Throw in a Land Rover Defender and the Range Rover Sport SVR plus several spectacular car chases and the film is definitely one for the car enthusiast. 30 WHERE TO GO 02.15

The biggest change has occurred in the big cities. In Stockholm, for example, there are 60% more bikes than ten years ago. Increased environmental awareness and the general exercise trend are usually given as explanations. Riding a bike is a much gentler form of exercise. A cycle supports your body weight, so a person who is unfit, overweight or injured can still usually cycle and a bike causes not nearly as much strain on the body as say running. Cycling also improves your fitness – breathing becomes calmer, because

oxygen intake improves, the heart muscles are strengthened and exercising regularly reduces the risk of atherosclerosis and heart disease. You become leaner and more flexible, which significantly reduces the risk of injury.Your muscles become stronger and more resilient while calorie burning increases. It is only when it comes to agility that the bike falls short, as one sits in a monotonous position. Therefore it is a good idea to supplement cycling with some form of stretching exercise. The bike has, during the past ten years, gone from being merely a means of transport to being a training tool. Just as we have one pair of shoes for walking and another for jogging soon we will have different kinds of bicycles for different purposes. 02.15 WHERE TO GO 31

Cycling trends

A comfortable, light, city hybrid Crouching with your back bent over the handlebars is no longer acceptable. Bicycles in 2015 should instead be comfortable, avoiding unnecessary pain to your back. This is a natural development given the amount of people who now cycle to work. According to the cycle shops, customers are increasingly seeking a more professional ‘bike fit’.

Personalised bike “The Swedes also see more and more uses for the bicycle, especially as commuting continues to grow. The same person may have several different cycling personalities: the commuter cyclist, the exercise rider and maybe the pleasure cyclist”, says Klas Elm, chairman of Swedish Cycling. A trend that is growing more each year is that cycles are meant to be seen. Customers are buying more and more bikes that stand out in terms of colour. Lifestyle bicycles are going more towards creme and sport bikes lean towards stronger colours such as bright red, orange and green. Odd colours, on the whole, are trendy! “Even creative accessories such as a smartphone holder are increasing significantly, even if we are only at the start of the development. The Swedish cyclist is spending increasing amounts of money on their bicycle, on accessories and service and it is here that one can see the greatest development, which of course is linked to the reason why bicycle use is rising in Sweden.” says Klas.
