PRESIDENT’S LETTER Whether you’re a parent, an athlete, a member of the media or a spirited spectator, I am pleased to welcome you to our Yellow Jacket community and look forward to cheering on the Jackets with you! As a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), Waynesburg University offers 18 NCAA Division III varsity sports for our hundreds of student-athletes. While the reasons for participation in these sports are many, all of our athletic programs are aimed at helping our student-athletes grow spiritually, intellectually and athletically during their collegiate experience. During the 2013-14 academic year, President Douglas G. Lee 133 Waynesburg University studentathletes earned recognition on the PAC fall and spring Academic Honor Rolls. That combined total was the highest of all 10 PAC schools, an impressive achievement that illustrates the caliber of student-athletes at Waynesburg. Our goal is to provide our student-athletes with the best possible education and experiences that will prepare them to lead lives of purpose. We actively recruit student-athletes with high academic standards who will pursue excellence in the classroom and community while competing at the highest level in their chosen sport.

HEAD COACH RON CHRISTMAN Waynesburg University tennis coach Ron Christman is a certified professional member of the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) and an experienced tournament player, tennis instructor, and coach. He continues to teach privately and run tennis camps in the off-season. The 2014-2015 tennis season marks Christman’s 17th at Waynesburg University. Christman has coached the women’s team since the fall of 1998 and the men since the spring of 2000. Under his guidance, both programs earned their first winning seasons in 2001-2002. The women’s team has placed a programbest second on multiple occassions at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships. Following the 2005 tournament, four Yellow Jackets earned all-conference honors, while all three doubles teams received all-conference laurels. The Yellow Jacket men have also finished runner-up in the final team standings of the annual PAC championships on multiple occasions. The 2014 Jackets took fourth and gathered three sets of second-team All-PAC laurels.
Christman’s involvement in tennis goes beyond his coaching duties. He is a member of the ITA and serves as a Vice President of Adult Activities on the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Middle States. This past summer, Christman achieved Etcheberry Certified status, which allows him to make legendary Pat Etcheberry’s strength, conditioning and movement secrets for tennis available to aspiring tennis players in the southwestern Pennsylvania area. He is also a frequent presenter on a variety of tennis subjects. He won the USPTA Middle States seminar contest in 2000 and presented his “Winning Doubles Strategy” seminar at the USPTA World Conference in Phoenix, Ariz., that fall. He also has presented “Building Tennis Programs” and “NCAA Division III Tennis” at seminars in recent years. Christman’s past activities include serving as president of community tennis organizations as well as holding certificates as a USTA/ITA tournament official and a USTA NTRP rating verifier. His current tennis-teaching activities range from introductory clinics for adults and children to working directly with serious players. A native of Washington, Pa., Christman attended Waynesburg University and Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y.
Christman was named USPTA Middle States Division College Coach of the Year for the second time in his career in 2004. His first honor from the USPTA came in 1999. Christman also has received PAC Coach of the Year twice during his tenure at Waynesburg.

The Yellow Jacket tennis teams have also achieved tremendous success in the classroom. The women’s team earned its 11th Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) AllAcademic Team Award over the past 12 years in 2011-12, while the men’s team also added its third ITA All-Academic Team Award over the past four years to their long list of awards for classroom success.
Head coach Ron Christman has always made it a point to value academic and athletic success with his teams.

The Waynesburg University tennis programs have gone beyond success on the court. Their quest for glory both on the court and in the classroom has led both men's and women's programs to receiving Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Academic All-American honors. The Yellow Jacket women's tennis team garnered the honor for the 11th time in 12 years following the 2011 campaign. For the men, 2011 brought them their third award in four seasons. Head coach Ron Christman is a strong believer that the Yellow Jacket tennis teams prove that players can excel both as students and as athletes. “We've been fortunate to build a program around young people who are good students and good athletes," said Christman. "I see how hard our players work to do well in class, on the court and in the community.” The Waynesburg women’s tennis teams had five of their own lauded as ITA Scholar Athletes in 2011, which rewards a season GPA of at least 3.50. A trio of Waynesburg netters represented the men’s team that year as ITA Scholar Athletes. In addition to the recognition they received from the ITA, the program also saw an impressive eight women’s players and Canning listed on the Fall 2012 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Academic Honor Roll. Five Jacket men received the honor for spring PAC Academic Honor Roll. The ITA Academic All-America Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.20 or higher. In order to earn ITA Scholar Athlete status, a player must own a gradepoint average of 3.5 or higher. To be honored on the PAC Academic Honor Roll, a student must record a 3.6 GPA for his semester of competition. As Yellow Jacket student-athletes are proving, success is measured both in competition and in the classroom.

WAYNESBURG COURTS The 2010-2011 men’s and women’s tennis season was highlighted by the first overhaul in Waynesburg tennis playing facilities in decades. The Yellow Jackets moved from their old three-court facility on campus, to a brand new six-court setup located just outside of the borough of Waynesburg behind the outfield fence of Waynesburg’s baseball field. Veteran head tennis coach Ron Christman’s men’s and women’s squads inaugurated the courts during the 2010-2011 seasons.
the teams won’t have to worry about getting the matches in with this facility.” Playing on the old three-court facility, previous seasons included difficulties in completing matches. Christman believes this problem will no longer be an issue. “Six courts will reduce dual match time by as much as two hours,” Christman said. “Typically, our matches ran longer by an hour to an hourand-a-half, but longer matches were not unusual. Matches on six courts will take two to three hours to complete.” Christman also sees the courts as a major asset to the future of both the men’s and women’s programs when it comes to future recruits and scheduling. “Not having six courts was always a huge issue for us in recruiting and even in scheduling home matches,” Christman said. “The significant increase in home matches for both men and women this coming year is due specifically to the new facility with six courts.”

The venue showcases six courts with enclosed fencing featuring rounded California corners, replacing the over 100-year old predecessors. Better spacing between individual courts and between the baselines and fences allow for safer play and fewer stoppages when balls cross into courts other than their own. Amity Asphalt handled the project and is the same company that surfaced Waynesburg’s John F. Wiley Stadium and the school’s baseball field. The site adds another state-of-theart facility for the University. The court surface is green Decoturf, which is the same surface used at the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. “Based on talks with Ron [Christman], it will be a major improvement,” said Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration Roy Barnhart. “Now

Net Play magazine, produced by the United States Tennis Association (UTSA), recently featured the courts in its publication. The article listed Waynesburg’s facility as one players should play at within the Allegheny Mountain region,
2014 SEASON PREVIEW Expectations are high for the Waynesburg University women’s tennis team in 2014. The program sets a school record in singleseason wins (11) in 2013 and lost just one senior who saw regular playing time.
Dubrock is another valuable contributor for Christman’s squad. The Mars High School graduate went 8-5 in singles play, while putting together an 11-5 record in doubles play last fall.
With the bulk of the major contributors returning, the 2014 Waynesburg University women’s tennis team will look to build off of its fourth-place finish at the 2013 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships. With head coach Ron Christman gearing up for his 17th year as the leader of the program, the 2014 team will look to make a push up the standings this fall. In 2013, the Yellow Jackets nearly doubled their win total from the previous season and finished 11-4 overall record and a 6-3 regular season mark in PAC play. The Jackets did exceptionally well on their home court, finishing with an 8-1 record.
Limback, who missed all of 2013 with an injury, carries an 11-16 career singles record and 16-17 career doubles record into the upcoming season. Limback and Dubrock teamed up to take third place at numberthree doubles in 2012 at the PAC Championships.
The strength of the team revolves around a strong and deep senior class. Lauren Cowden, Alyssa Daniel, Madison Dubrock and Ellen Limback all have made significant contributions in their first three seasons in the Orange and Black and look to lead the team in 2014. Cowden tallied a team-high 13 wins last season in singles play. The McDonald, Pa. native went 7-2 in regular season singles matches within conference play. Cowden spent the majority of her time at number-six singles, earning a 9-4 record at that spot. However, she combined to go 4-0 while playing at number-four and number-five singles.
Klemash is back after spending her first two seasons in the number-one singles position for the Jackets. The Canon-McMillan graduate put together a 5-8 record in singles play last year. In doubles play, Klemash and Daniel went 9-6 overall as the Jackets top team. Juniors Rachel Wilson, Hannah Hixon and Christy Ritter all return, along with senior Nicole Williams and sophomores Danielle Juzwick and Heidi Evans. Newcomers include junior Emily McDonold, who spent the last two falls playing soccer for the Yellow Jackets. The 2014 season is set to get underway when the Jackets host Pitt-Greensburg on Friday, August 29. Match time is set for 4 p.m.
www.waynesburgsports.com
Daniel has been a consistent starter over her first three seasons. The Manheim, Pa. native compiled a 7-9 singles record last season with the bulk of her time coming at number-two singles. Daniel performed quite well in doubles play when paired with junior Rachel Klemash. The duo went 9-6 in doubles matches at number-one doubles in 2013.
Juniors Sarah Reyes and Rachel Klemash are back to help bolster the starting lineup. Reyes put together a strong sophomore season last year, going 12-3 in singles play and finishing in third place at number-four singles at the annual PAC Championships. Reyes pulled off an upset of the top seed in her bracket at the PAC Championships in 2013.

2013 SEASON RECAP The 2013 Waynesburg women’s tennis season will go down as one of the best in team history. The team posted a strong 11-4 overall record and finished 6-3 in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play under longtime head coach Ron Christman.
season, posting a 13-4 singles record. Sophomore Sarah Reyes also put together a strong season individually by posting a 12-3 overall record. Both Cowden and Reyes went a team-best 7-2 in singles matches in PAC play.
Following the regular season success, Christman guided the team to a fifth place finish at the annual PAC Championships, hosted by Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie, Pa.
Reyes led the squad at the PAC Championships with a third-place finish at fourth singles. Cowden (sixth singles) and fellow junior Alyssa Daniel (second singles) each recorded fourth place finishes in their respective singles matches. Waynesburg also got a pair of fourth-place finishes at first doubles (Daniel and Rachel Klemash) and third doubles (Reyes and Madison Dubrock).
The season was highlighted by an impressive seven match winning streak to close the regular season. During that stretch the Jackets defeated PAC foes Chatham, Thomas More, Thiel, Geneva and Washington and Jefferson, while also winning nonconference contests against Marietta and Goucher. The regular season finale victory over Goucher was the first victory over the Gophers in school history.

PAC OVERVIEW Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington and Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC expanded to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly an NCAA Division III independent. Saint Vincent College, a former NAIA member, joined the conference as it began provisional membership status in NCAA Division III in 2006-07. Another former NAIA member, Geneva College, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play as it started NCAA Division III provisional membership in 2007-08. Saint Vincent became fullfledged member of the NCAA last year and the 2011-12 school year saw Geneva do the same after acting as a provisional member. Chatham University became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007-08. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. In 2010-11, the conference had 39 teams represent the conference in postseason play, including 19 in NCAA Championship events. PAC championship teams receive automatic qualification (AQ) status for most NCAA Division III national championship events. All-conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select all-league squads for all team sports, while in individual sports such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships.
The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Washington & Jefferson men and Grove City women captured the 2013-14 trophies. True to its mission, the PAC has produced numerous Academic All-Americans and NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the league named a record 852 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating athletes who attain a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.
