PRESIDENT’S LETTER Whether you’re a parent, an athlete, a member of the media or a spirited spectator, I am pleased to welcome you to our Yellow Jacket community and look forward to cheering on the Jackets with you! As a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), Waynesburg University offers 18 NCAA Division III varsity sports for our hundreds of student-athletes. While the reasons for participation in these sports are many, all of our athletic programs are aimed at helping our student-athletes grow spiritually, intellectually and athletically during their collegiate experience. During the 2014-15 academic year, 110 Waynesburg University student-athletes earned recognition on the PAC fall and spring Academic Honor Rolls. That combined total was the highest of all 10 PAC schools, an impressive achievement that illustrates the caliber of student-athletes at Waynesburg.
President Douglas G. Lee
Also this year, the Yellow jacket men were awarded the PAC All-Sports Trophy for the first time in University history. PAC All-Sports Trophies are awarded annually to the schools that perform the best across the board in league competition. Our goal is to provide our student-athletes with the best possible education and experiences that will prepare them to lead lives of purpose. We actively recruit student-athletes with high academic standards who will pursue excellence in the classroom and community while competing at the highest level in their chosen sport.
Douglas G. Lee President

On behalf of Waynesburg University students, faculty and staff, I would like to thank you for your interest in our athletic programs. I hope that you enjoy another great year of athletic competition at Waynesburg University!

2015-16 SEASON PREVIEW After leading the Waynesburg University men’s basketball team from ninth place in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) in 2011-12, to a PAC runner-up finish this past winter, the 2014-15 Yellow Jacket senior class has graduated and left one of the finest legacies in recent team history. Despite the loss of the seven-man class that included seven of the team’s top nine scorers, the Jackets have plans to stick around the upper echelon of the conference standings. Much like last year’s team, Waynesburg, which is led by sixth-year head coach Mark Christner, will be led by a sizeable senior class. Five four-year veterans of the program provide tremendous leadership for the squad. Senior forward D.J. Ritchie is also back for his second year with the team after transferring prior to last season.
(6-4) appeared in a combined to appear in 27 games as freshmen. They also competed as jumpers for the Waynesburg University men’s track & field team. While the Jackets have become known for veteran leaders in recent years, Christner and his staff are excited about this year’s freshman class, which features six newcomers from Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The group includes two all-state players and three individuals standing 6-3 or taller. Waynesburg tips off its schedule on Saturday, Nov. 14, with a road trip to Muskingum. Start time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Senior point guard B.J. Durham is the team’s leading returner in terms of scoring (10.3 points per game), assists (1.7 assists per game) and steals (1.2 steals per game). He will have plenty of experienced size to feed the ball to in the forms of Ritchie (6-5), senior forward Nate Labishak (6-5) and senior forward Tim Plansinis (64). Ritchie scored 6.5 points per game while appearing in an average of 14.8 minutes over 28 contests. He also pulled down 3.1 rebounds per contest and was one of the team’s top free throw shooters (.829). Labishak, who missed the end of last year with an injury, provides energy, leadership and post production for the Jackets. He averaged 2.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game. Plansinis saw his role with the team expand during his junior campaign. He averaged 1.4 points and 0.8 rebounds over 18 games played.
There are only two Jacket juniors on this year’s team, but both guards are expected to play significant roles this season. Point guard Timmy Kaiser played in 14 games as a sophomore and was another stand-out free throw shooter for the Jackets at 91.7 percent. After not playing last year, Christian Koroly is back with the team for 2015-16. The Washington, Pennsylvania, native was one of Waynesburg’s top bench players during his freshman campaign of 2013-14. That year, Koroly averaged 6.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and 0.9 assists while appearing in all 28 games. Sophomore Kendall Paige and Jon Knabb are all about length and athleticism. Paige (6-3) and Knabb
Senior wing D.J. Ritchie is expected to be a major competitor for starting time after serving as one of Waynesburg’s primary backups in 2014-15.

Guard Ty Negley, a Waynesburg native, and wing player Scott Blumer complete this year’s senior class.

HEAD COACH MARK CHRISTNER College Coaching Experience ‘99-’02: Asst. Women’s Coach, Calvin College ‘02-’10: Asst. Men’s Coach, Calvin College ‘10-present: Head Coach, Waynesburg University
Mark Christner returns as head coach of the Waynesburg University men’s basketball team for the 2015-16 season, his sixth year directing the Yellow Jackets. After inheriting a two-win team in 2010, the program rose to register 18 wins during the 2014-15 season, including a 12-4 mark in conference play and an appearance in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) men’s basketball championship game. Christner directed the team to a nine-game win streak at the end of the regular season, extending through the semifinal round of the PAC Tournament. In the tournament, the Yellow Jackets earned victories over Grove City and Bethany, their third triumphs over each team during the 2014-15 campaign. After a 72-66 loss to Saint Vincent in the PAC Championship, Waynesburg ended its year with a berth in the ECAC South Tournament, its second consecutive postseason appearance. Individually, then-seniors Jason Propst and Jacob Fleegle were named to all-conference teams. Propst earned a spot on the All-PAC first-team, while Fleegle enjoyed a second-team nod. Both standout forwards eclipsed the 1,000-career-point threshold as seniors. During the 2013-14 season, the Yellow Jackets made their biggest improvements to that point under Christner by posting a 15-12 overall mark and a program-record nine wins in PAC action (9-7). As a result, Christner was honored as the PAC Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year. Waynesburg enjoyed a six-game win streak, its longest since the 2002-03 season, and the Orange and Black swept conference rival W&J for the first time since 2003-04.The 2-0 mark against the Presidents was the first time the Jackets swept any conference foe since 2006-07. Waynesburg went on to duplicate the feat against Grove City and Thiel, before ending the season with one of its biggest wins in recent years. The Jackets upended the two-time defending PAC champions from Saint Vincent 68-62 in the final game of the regular season.

Christner’s Jackets continued their hot play into the postseason, where they both hosted and won their first PAC quarterfinal playoff game since 2005-06. Waynesburg defeated W&J, 62-58. The Jackets also qualified for an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) tournament for the first time in 16 years with a berth in the ECAC Southwest Tournament.

In 2012-13, the Yellow Jackets went 10-17 overall and 4-12 in PAC play, earning double-digit wins for the first time under Christner. Arguably the biggest victory of the season came on Saturday, Jan. 19, when the Jackets beat traditional PAC powerhouse Bethany 67-64. That triumph snapped a 22-game losing streak to the Bison. Waynesburg also received its highest individual accolades since the 2007-08 season when sophomore forward Jason Propst was honored as a second-team All-PAC pick. The biggest highlight of the 2011-12 season was a 69-57 win over Washington & Jefferson. With the win, Waynesburg snapped an 18-game PAC losing streak, and beat the Presidents for the first time since the 2004-05 season, a span of 14 games. The 2012 postseason featured another big win for the Jackets, a 63-57 victory over Westminster in the preliminary round of the PAC Tournament. Christner earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1999 from Calvin, where he majored in history and minored in physical education with an emphasis in coaching. He went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in physical education with a pedagogy emphasis in 2005 from Western Michigan University. Christner serves as Waynesburg’s compliance officer to the NCAA and is married to his wife, Sara. They have a son Leo and two daughters, Elin and Nora.

PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), built on the basic belief that an athletic program is an integral part of college life, but not an entity in itself, looks back on sixty years of growth and ahead to years of continued academic and athletic excellence. The league’s name clearly reflects its founding principle that operational control of all aspects of intercollegiate athletics is ultimately the responsibility of the presidents of each member institution, and thus active presidential leadership and oversight is paramount in conference administration. Formally organized in 1955 by Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Case Institute of Technology, and Wayne State University, the PAC was the result of a realization that college athletics, despite numerous virtues for the individual and the institution, were gradually becoming a financial and academic burden. If athletics were to be continued, action had to be taken to place the program on its proper level. This included the premise that benefits of participation should be provided to as many students as possible. The PAC and its membership continue its original, defining mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Institutions involved understand that the key components to its progress lie in the foundation of faith in each member by each other member. It is the conviction of its membership that the PAC is the solution to the dilemma of intercollegiate athletic competition, and they have staked their athletic future on this premise. Currently comprised of 10 select private institutions – Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College – the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics, with academics at the center of each member’s philosophy. The PAC expanded its membership to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly a NCAA Division III independent. Saint Vincent, a former NAIA member, joined the conference in 2006 as it began its reclassification to NCAA Division III status. Another former NAIA member, Geneva, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play in 2007 as it started its NCAA Division III reclassification. Chatham became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007. In 2012, the PAC Presidents’ Council voted to add Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University as affiliate members in the sport of football beginning with the 2014 season. The PAC crowns league champions and awards all-conference honors in its 21 championship sports. Head coaches determine all-PAC squads for all team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. In addition to its 21 sponsored championship sports, the PAC partnered with the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) to create the single-sport Ohio River Lacrosse Conferences (ORLC & ORWLC) in 2014, with both kicking off league schedules during the spring of 2015. The PAC, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Waynesburg men and Grove City women captured the 2014-15 trophies. Staying true to its original mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence, the PAC has seen nearly 200 of its participating student-athletes recognized as Academic All-Americans, while the league has also produced numerous NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the conference named 935 of its student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who earn a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above. During the 2014-15 academic year, nine PAC student-athletes were honored with Capital One Academic All-America honors. Also, the Thomas More women’s basketball program and W&J junior wrestler Nick Carr claimed NCAA Division III national championships in their respective sports.
