PERFORMING ARTS SERIES THE BEEGIE ADAIR TRIO WITH SPECIAL GUEST MONICA RAMEY THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 | 7:30 P.M. GOODWIN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER Once in a while, a musician comes along with impeccable technique, deep understanding of the jazz repertoire, an innate tendency to swing and the rare ability to communicate the heart and soul of a tune to listeners. That musician is Beegie Adair. Join Beegie Adair (piano), Roger Spencer (bass) and Chris Brown (drums) with special guest Monica Ramey (vocals) for the Performing Arts Series fall offering.
Hailed as “one of the finest piano players in the world” by Entertainment News and “an accomplished artist with a delicate touch” by JazzTimes magazine, Beegie has 32 recordings to her name, counting all six projects in her box set. She has also appeared on scores of other projects throughout her extensive career. The Beegie Adair Trio recently released their first live concert album, “The Real Thing.”
ART EXHIBITIONS GUEST ART EXHIBITION: RYAN JACKSON
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, THROUGH FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11 OPENING RECEPTION: MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 | 6 TO 8 P.M. BENEDUM FINE ARTS GALLERY Waynesburg University’s Benedum Art Gallery is honored to show the work of Ryan Jackson. The Rhode Island School of Design graduate has been showing in galleries and universities throughout the United States for the past twelve years. His work utilizes found images that are culled from various sources as armatures to explore painting.
“Hearing the instruments in the room with you is quite different from having a recording come into your house that was done in a studio,” Beegie explains. “There’s a special atmosphere created at live performances, and that’s the real thing.”
His recent series examines perceptions of good and evil in our world and juxtaposes human nature with the principles of God’s Word. His paintings wrestle with major events that have shaped our lives, with the illusion of power and control in a world that is in chaos and quickly passing away. His goal is to scrutinize humanity’s natural gravitation toward darkness and death, in contrast with the hope and life found in Christ.

CONSTITUTION DAY CELEBRATION: “CONSTITUTIONALLY CONDEMNED: SUSETTE KELO’S TAKINGS CLAUSE BATTLE TO KEEP HER PINK HOUSE”
FALL PLAY: “THE UNINVITED” BY TIM KELLY, FROM THE NOVEL BY DOROTHY MACARDLE
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 | NOON GOODWIN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
Written by three Waynesburg University Stover Scholars, “Constitutionally Condemned: Susette Kelo’s Takings Clause Battle to Keep her Pink House” dramatizes the property owner Susette Kelo’s battle to keep her New London, Conn., home in the face of a redevelopment plan involving the New London and Connecticut governments and Pfizer Corporation. Kelo and her attorneys argued all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court that the development plan did not qualify as a “public use” under the U.S. Constitution’s Fifth Amendment Takings Clause, which states that, “Nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.” Although Kelo’s constitutional challenge failed before a closely divided Supreme Court, she catalyzed a national movement to reinvigorate property rights in the United States. The play brings to life the passions and conflicts of Kelo’s case as well as the critical jurisprudential issues facing the Supreme Court. This production is directed by Edward L. Powers, professor of theater at Waynesburg University and sponsored by the Stover Center for Constitutional Studies and Moral Leadership. FREE ADMISSION
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30, THROUGH SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2 | 7:30 PM GOODWIN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER Produced through special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., and directed by Edward L. Powers, professor of theater at Waynesburg University, “The Uninvited” is a ghost story about Pam Fitzgerald and her brother Roddy who, looking to get away from the rigors of London, find an old country house on the west coast of England. It is their dream house; certainly ideal. But every house comes with a history, and this house is no different. A murder may or may not have taken place there some 15 years earlier. In any case, the sound of weeping can be heard throughout as the night turns into day. Is it just the wind? Or is there someone else in the house with them? THIS PLAY IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR SMALL CHILDREN. FREE ADMISSION; RESERVATIONS SUGGESTED FOR RESERVATIONS, CALL 724-852-3226.
LECTURES GLENN A. & JANE L. CROSBY LECTURE SERIES: TODD GREEN TUESDAY, OCTOBER 8, AND THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10 | 7:30 P.M. MARSH CENTER AND GOODWIN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
Multi-instrumentalist Todd Green will serve as the Glenn A. & Jane L. Crosby Humanities Lecture speaker. His custom-built electronic system allows him to layer instruments as he performs, which in effect turns him into a high-tech, one-man-band of World Music. His artistic mission is to “help bring down the barriers that divide us by experiencing other cultures through their music” as he takes his audiences on a musical armchairtour of the world.
