*THE HYMN
Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing (#45)................................................NETTLETON, Robert Robinson, 1758, Traditional American Melody
Come, thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above; Praise His name- I'm fixed upon it- name of God's redeeming love.
Here I raise my Ebenezer, hither by thy help I've come; And I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God; He, to rescue me from danger, bought me with His precious blood.
O to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be! Let Thy goodness like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to Thee; Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; Here's my heart, O, take and seal it; seal it for Thy courts above.
INTRODUCTION OF SPEAKER..................................................Mr. Douglas G. Lee ’81 President of the University
BACCALAUREATE SERMON...............................Reverend Dr. Edward W. Glover “Created for a Purpose”
*The congregation is requested to stand and join in the singing.
Be Thou My Vision (#532).......................................................................................SLANE, Traditional Irish Melody, Mary E Byrne 1905
Be thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that thou art. Thou my best thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.
Be thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word; I ever with thee, and Thou with me, Lord. Thou and Thou only, first in my heart, High King of Heaven, my treasure thou art.
High king of heaven, my victory won, May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Revered Dr. Edward Glover and his wife, Tammy, have passionately followed their calling to minister to the least, the last and the lost in Pittsburgh’s urban North Side community for over 35 years.
Together, they founded Urban Impact in 1995, after serving for almost a decade in youth ministry at Allegheny Center Alliance Church. Urban Impact currently has more than 60 programs in Athletics, Education, Performing Arts, and Options, a post high school placement program, serving over 2,500 students each year.
Rev. Glover currently serves as Associate Preacher at Christ Church at Grove Farm in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, and is a highly respected and sought-after speaker. He is regularly scheduled to speak at churches both locally and nationally.
In 2011, Rev. Glover received the prestigious Restoring Places Award at the Epoch Missions Gala in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2014, Urban Impact was awarded the inaugural “True Inspiration Award” for the northeast region from the Chick-fil-A Foundation for demonstrating “groundbreaking practices and visionary leadership” with innovative education.
Rev. Glover also founded Global Impact USA six years prior to Urban Impact’s inception. Global Impact was an annual, one-day missions event that gave students the charge to respond to the call of God in their lives and put it into practice.
Rev. Glover graduated from Lambuth University in Tennessee, and received his Masters of Divinity from Alliance Theological Seminary in New York.
He and Tammy continue to live on the North Side. They have four children and eight grandchildren.
John Montgomery is the President and CEO of Community Bank, which was founded in Carmichaels, Pennsylvania in 1901. Community Bank is a $1.45 billion commercial bank serving southwest Pennsylvania and portions of the West Virginia’s Ohio Valley.
Montgomery has over 35 years of experience in the financial services industry and has had a wide range of experience with both large and small institutions. He started his banking career as a part-time teller and, in addition to his current position, Montgomery has served as Chief Credit Officer, Chief Risk Officer, Divisional President, Managing Director Retail Banking, and Managing Director Commercial Banking. Montgomery has extensive experience in risk management, asset liability management, commercial banking, retail banking, operations, and payments. He is a frequent speaker at industry events and has taught economics and banking for both the American Bankers Association and the Pennsylvania Association of Community Bankers.
Montgomery earned his bachelor’s degree from Juniata College and holds an MBA from Drexel University. He serves on the Board of Directors of a number of non-profit institutions including the Pennsylvania Association of Community Bankers and the Pennsylvania Bankers Association. His past community involvement includes serving The United Way, Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, Junior Achievement, and Habitat for Humanity. In addition, Montgomery has served as Treasurer, Chair of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee, and Chair of the Trustees for Covenant United Methodist Church. Montgomery and his daughter, Elizabeth, have traveled to Ghana multiple times, in mission, to assist in providing clean water to those in poverty.
Montgomery was born and raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia and lived for over 20 years in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He and his wife Cory, reside in Washington County and are blessed with three wonderful children and one granddaughter.

The academic attire worn at American colleges’ exercises today goes back in its essential features to the Middle Ages. The oldest universities of northern Europe, such as Oxford, grew out of church schools, and both faculty and students were regarded in the Middle Ages as a part of the clergy. Hence, they wore clerical garb, largely borrowed from the monastic dress of their day, not merely on special occasions, but as their regular attire.
The head covering of the academic attire developed out of the skullcap worn by the clergy in cold weather to protect their tonsured heads. In the universities, this skullcap acquired a point on top, which gradually evolved into a tassel. The bonnet with tassel is still worn by degree-holders of the European universities. But, in this country, it has been replaced by the familiar mortar-board, which still, however, retains the medieval tassel.
The hood (the medieval caputium) was originally a head-covering worn over the head in bad weather, and otherwise dropped onto the shoulders, like the monk’s cowl. At first, it was worn by faculty and students alike, but in the early 16th century it was restricted to graduates, and thus came to be the mark of a degree-holder. The hoods contained pockets — for donations from students. Higher degrees provided larger hoods and larger pockets. Today, each college has its distinctive colored hood-lining by which its graduates may be recognized in academic processions.
The gown worn today is the medieval roba, and seems to have been borrowed from the habit of the Benedictine monks. The gown was intended to keep the professors warm in the cold monasteries. In the Middle Ages, undergraduates, bachelors and masters could be distinguished by the simplicity or elaborateness of their gowns, and this practice remains today. The doctoral gown has three furred strips (called Chevrons) on each sleeve; the master’s gown generally has open sleeves; and the bachelor’s gown is plain.
The wide velvet borders extending down the front of the doctoral gown, the velvet bars on the sleeves and the borders of most hoods are colored according to the scholarly field of the wearer. The most usual of these are:
