PRESIDENT’S LETTER Whether you’re a parent, an athlete, a member of the media or a spirited spectator, I am pleased to welcome you to our Yellow Jacket community and look forward to cheering on the Jackets with you! As a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), Waynesburg University offers 18 NCAA Division III varsity sports for our hundreds of student-athletes. While the reasons for participation in these sports are many, all of our athletic programs are aimed at helping our student-athletes grow spiritually, intellectually and athletically during their collegiate experience. During the 2014-15 academic year, 110 Waynesburg University student-athletes earned recognition on the PAC fall and spring Academic Honor Rolls. That combined total was the President Douglas G. Lee highest of all 10 PAC schools, an impressive achievement that illustrates the caliber of student-athletes at Waynesburg. Also this year, the Yellow jacket men were awarded the PAC All-Sports Trophy for the first time in University history. PAC All-Sports Trophies are awarded annually to the schools that perform the best across the board in league competition. Our goal is to provide our student-athletes with the best possible education and experiences that will prepare them to lead lives of purpose. We actively recruit student-athletes with high academic standards who will pursue excellence in the classroom and community while competing at the highest level in their chosen sport.

Daughtry spent three seasons as Waynesburg’s starting keeper and posted some of the best numbers between the pipes of anyone in recent program history. KICK PANCREATIC CANCER For the eighth consecutive year, the Waynesburg University women’s soccer team will host its annual “Kick Pancreatic Cancer” event. In conjunction with its Oct. 10 home match against Thiel College, the team will organize the event in efforts to raise money and spread awareness to fight the deadly disease. The idea for “Kick Pancreatic Cancer” was created back in 2009, when then-senior midfielder Catherine Moore planned and organized the event after her father, Kenneth Moore, was diagnosed with the disease. Mr. Moore, who served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Waynesburg University, passed away at the age of 59 on Nov. 6, 2010. Through its first two years, the event raised around $15,000 for the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. According to the Hirshberg Foundation’s web site, pancreatic cancer is one of the few cancers for which survival rates have not been improved substantially over the last 40 years. The average life expectancy after a diagnosis is just three to six months and just four percent of those diagnosed live beyond five years.
The Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research’s goal is supporting the ongoing efforts to find a cure for the disease. Now in its 17th year, the foundation has dedicated its efforts to significantly raise awareness and understanding about the malody, a disease that continues to be one of the most fatal and underfunded types of cancer. Members of the Jacket soccer team have collectively brought attention to the event the last few years through fundraising and advertising to not only the campus community but the local community of Waynesburg as well. Last year, the soccer programs reached out to the Waynesburg Chamber of Commerce, churches and youth soccer programs in the area. Team leaders also used social media avenues, such as a Facebook event that was created to inform students of the event and also provide information about the disease.
www.waynesburgsports.com The Jackets held their annual Kick Pancreatic Cancer event for the seventh straight season in 2014. The team organizes the event in efforts to raise money and spread awareness to fight the deadly disease.

2015 SEASON PREVIEW With the graduation of eight seniors from last year’s ECAC South Tournament-qualifying team, second-year head coach Laura Heethuis will need to find new leaders to step up for the 2015 Waynesburg University women’s soccer team. Despite the significant loss in talent, Waynesburg is still expected to bring back plenty of offensive potential and one of the most experienced goalkeepers in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) to make a run at the postseason. Senior Karleigh Murphey enjoyed a breakout 2014 season in which she led Waynesburg in goals (9), assists (5) and total points (23). All three of those totals ranked in the top 10 in the PAC statistical standings, as did her three game-winning goals. She was also one of just four Jackets to appear in all 20 games last year. For her efforts, Murphey was honored as a second-team All-PAC selection.
Scott’s primary backup is sophomore Heather Fraser, who got her feet wet in the college game over three appearances in net. She logged 85:46 on the pitch and stopped fourof-six shots on goal. Fraser notched her first collegiate victory after playing a seasonhigh 45 minutes in a 3-2 victory over Bluffton. Waynesburg opens the 2015 schedule on Friday, Sept. 4, at a two-day tournament in Alfred, New York. The Yellow Jackets face Alfred State College to kick off the season, before playing the host Saxons of Alfred University on Saturday, Sept. 5.
The Orange and Black also brings back its second-leading scorer in sophomore Nikki Davis. Davis made an immediate impact for the Yellow Jackets by starting all 20 games and tallying eight goals. Those scores, along with her first collegiate assist, allowed the freshman standout to pile up 17 total points. Three more underclassmen – junior Melanie Burchfield, sophomore Melanie Byler and junior Sara Hackman – return after scoring three, four and three goals, respectively, in 2014. Junior Chelsey Withers leads all returners with three assists. That total tied her for second place on the team standings behind Murphey.
www.waynesburgsports.com
The graduation of Natalie Abraham will certainly be felt, as she was the leader of the Jacket defense. However, the return of Withers, as well as sophomore Sam Nichols, who started all 19 games in which she appeared, should help soften the blow. Standing tall behind the Waynesburg defense will be four-year starting goalkeeper Ciara Scott. Scott, who has won multiple PAC Defensive Player of the Week awards over her collegiate career, posted a 2.13 goals against average and a .653 save percentage as a junior. 5
Senior Karleigh Murphy returns after being named secondteam All-PAC following a nine-goal, five-assist effort in 2014.

PAC OVERVIEW The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), built on the basic belief that an athletic program is an integral part of college life, but not an entity in itself, looks back on sixty years of growth and ahead to years of continued academic and athletic excellence. The league’s name clearly reflects its founding principle that operational control of all aspects of intercollegiate athletics is ultimately the responsibility of the presidents of each member institution, and thus active presidential leadership and oversight is paramount in conference administration. Formally organized in 1955 by Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Case Institute of Technology, and Wayne State University, the PAC was the result of a realization that college athletics, despite numerous virtues for the individual and the institution, were gradually becoming a financial and academic burden. If athletics were to be continued, action had to be taken to place the program on its proper level. This included the premise that benefits of participation should be provided to as many students as possible. The PAC and its membership continue its original, defining mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Institutions involved understand that the key components to its progress lie in the foundation of faith in each member by each other member. It is the conviction of its membership that the PAC is the solution to the dilemma of intercollegiate athletic competition, and they have staked their athletic future on this premise. Currently comprised of 10 select private institutions – Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College – the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics, with academics at the center of each member’s philosophy. The PAC expanded its membership to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly a NCAA Division III independent. Saint Vincent, a former NAIA member, joined the conference in 2006 as it began its reclassification to NCAA Division III status. Another former NAIA member, Geneva, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play in 2007 as it started its NCAA Division III reclassification. Chatham became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007. In 2012, the PAC Presidents’ Council voted to add Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University as affiliate members in the sport of football beginning with the 2014 season. The PAC crowns league champions and awards all-conference honors in its 21 championship sports. Head coaches determine all-PAC squads for all team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. In addition to its 21 sponsored championship sports, the PAC partnered with the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) to create the single-sport Ohio River Lacrosse Conferences (ORLC & ORWLC) in 2014, with both kicking off league schedules during the spring of 2015. The PAC, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Waynesburg men and Grove City women captured the 2014-15 trophies. Staying true to its original mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence, the PAC has seen nearly 200 of its participating student-athletes recognized as Academic All-Americans, while the league has also produced numerous NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the conference named 935 of its student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who earn a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above. During the 2014-15 academic year, nine PAC student-athletes were honored with Capital One Academic All-America honors. Also, the Thomas More women’s basketball program and W&J junior wrestler Nick Carr claimed NCAA Division III national championships in their respective sports.

2015 SEASON PREVIEW Head coach Brad Heethuis was part of history during his first year on the bench with the Waynesburg University men’s soccer team. Led by an eight-man senior class, the Yellow Jackets qualified for the four-team Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) tournament for the first time since the league went to the format. By the time the final game of the season had been completed, Waynesburg sported a 9-7-4 overall record that included a 5-2-1 PAC mark.
as an All-PAC selection and received multiple all-conference and all-region weekly awards. Daughtry saved some of his best work for his senior campaign, during which he ranked first in the PAC in total saves (113), second in saves per game (6.28), first in save percentage (.856) and third in goals against average (1.07).
Unfortunately, many of the key contributors from last year’s team have graduated, including three former All-PAC honorees and seven everyday starters. Clearly, the Jackets will need to find new contributors to keep the team in the postseason in 2015.
The leading candidate for the starting keeper job appears to be senior Nathan Ribar, who started two of the four games in which he appeared this past fall. He stopped 12 of the 19 shots he faced and played 187:34 in net.
The cupboard is not completely bare for Heethuis, as senior Victor Browne returns after picking up second-team all-conference applause this past fall. The Newport News, Virginia, native snagged second-team honors after putting together a fine first season as an everyday starter. He tied for fourth in the PAC in total points (19), tied for third in goals (eight) and tallied two game-winning scores.
Waynesburg opens the 2015 season on Tuesday, Sept. 1, when it hosts Kenyon at John F. Wiley Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Daughtry will be back with the squad as an assistant coach.

The Jackets’ number-two returning scorer is junior Chad Palucka, who found the back of the net four times. He also assisted on a score, giving him nine total points in 2014. Palucka was lauded as a PAC Player of the Week during his sophomore campaign.

Speaking of assists, junior Zach Benedict recorded more of them last season than any member of the 2015 team. Benedict set up five goals during his sophomore campaign. Juniors Joey Buchanan and Josh Hennigh return after notching two and three goals, respectively, this past fall. The Waynesburg defense is expected to be led by sophomore Bryan Sontag, who started seven of the 13 games in which he appeared during his freshman campaign. There will be a noticeable absence in net as three-year starter Brandon Daughtry will relinquish the goalkeeper jersey. Over his time with the Jackets, the veteran was honored
Senior Victor Browne will be counted upon to play an even bigger role with the Yellow Jackets in 2015. Browne is a returning second-team All-PAC honoree.
