PRESIDENT’S LETTER Whether you’re a parent, an athlete, a member of the media or a spirited spectator, I am pleased to welcome you to our Yellow Jacket community and look forward to cheering on the Jackets with you! As a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), Waynesburg University offers 18 NCAA Division III varsity sports for our hundreds of studentathletes. While the reasons for participation in these sports are many, all of our athletic programs are aimed at helping our student-athletes grow spiritually, intellectually and athletically during their collegiate experience. During the 2014-15 academic year, 110 Waynesburg University student-athPresident Douglas G. Lee letes earned recognition on the PAC fall and spring Academic Honor Rolls. That combined total was the highest of all 10 PAC schools, an impressive achievement that illustrates the caliber of student-athletes at Waynesburg. Also this year, the Yellow jacket men were awarded the PAC All-Sports Trophy for the first time in University history. PAC All-Sports Trophies are awarded annually to the schools that perform the best across the board in league competition. Our goal is to provide our student-athletes with the best possible education and experiences that will prepare them to lead lives of purpose. We actively recruit student-athletes with high academic standards who will pursue excellence in the classroom and community while competing at the highest level in their chosen sport.

DIG PINK While getting back to the top of the conference mountain is the main goal of any team in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference every year, the Waynesburg University volleyball team has also made it a point to take on an even more important and devastating opponent. Over recent seasons, the Yellow Jackets have become active in raising money for breast cancer research and prevention. This year, their efforts will continue through the Side-Out Foundation and their Dig Pink program. “I’m just really excited that we have the opportunity to spread the word about the research concerning breast cancer,” said Waynesburg University head volleyball coach Stephanie Benkowski.

said. “I just thought it would be a really good cause.” This year, the Yellow Jackets will host Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Saint Vincent on Oct. 21 for its Dig Pink game. All funds raised at the event will go towards the very worthy cause. The Side-Out Foundation (Side-Out) was established in 2004 to unite volleyball players and coaches and to have them work toward the common goal of furthering breast cancer awareness, education and patient services. Side-Out supports teams nationwide in their volleyball tournaments, clinics and other fundraising efforts. The foundation offers practical support for fundraising in addition to educational material for participants in order to help them become effective advocates for breast cancer. It contributes the funds to organizations that serve breast cancer patients, whether it be in the form of research, medical services or compassionate support. For more information about breast health or breast cancer, visit the foundation’s web site at www.side-out.org or call 1-877-DIG PINK (1-877-344-7465).

www.waynesburgsports.com

Teams will typically wear pink tee shirts or uniforms at the event, use pink volleyballs for play and sell various items at their respective gymnasiums to support breast cancer research. This is Waynesburg’s fourth year with the Dig Pink program. However, the Jackets have been raising money for cancer research since 2008. That year, Benkowski was inspired by some of her PAC opponents to get involved with the program. “Westminster, Bethany and Grove City have done it for a while now,” Benkowski 7

2015 SEASON OUTLOOK WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Aug. 25) – Waynesburg University head volleyball coach Stephanie Benkowski is excited about the 2015 season, which will be her 11th at the helm of the Yellow Jackets. For the first time since 2006, Waynesburg is returning multiple All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) performers from a previous year’s team. Combine that fact with a recruiting class that is both large and talented, and there’s no reason to believe that Waynesburg won’t be noticeably improved from last year’s 6-29 squad that featured a 2-16 PAC record. MIDDLE HITTERS Junior Rachel Lang is back after taking on a significant role with the team in 2014. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native appeared in 35 matches and ranked second on the team in kills. Lang was also effective behind the service line, where she racked up a team-best 26 aces. Benkowski will be looking to her 13-woman group of newcomers to help fill out the depth chart in the middle. Casey Hall, Kasey Kennedy, Sarah Trocki, Bekah Matta and Jessica Sodmont will all be battling with Lang for court time. OUTSIDE HITTERS

Skinner was also an effective defensive performer on the court. She finished third on the squad in both total digs (290) and digs per set (2.54). Despite standing just 5-5, the Apol-

lo, Pennsylvania, native was solid around the net, as is evident by her 12 total blocks. Sophomore Casey Hall returns after seeing time in 24 matches during her freshman campaign. She averaged a respectable 1.06 kills per set. Several freshmen are also expected to compete for minutes in 2015, including Jessie Arnold and Lexy Waldman. SETTER

www.waynesburgsports.com

One of the team’s returning all-conference honorees is back to lead the charge on the outside. Senior Kourtney Skinner not only returned to seemingly full health in 2014 after a leg injury, but she established herself as Waynesburg’s top attacker. Her 297 kills and 2.61 kills per set not only put her at the top of the Yellow Jacket standings in both categories, but eighth in the PAC standings in terms of average.

Two-time All-PAC honoree Jessica Dorazio is back to lead the 2015 Yellow Jackets.

Sophomore Delaney Deniston led Waynesburg in assists as a freshman this past fall and will look to retain the starting job in 2015. During her first season in orange and black, the Wheeling, West Virginia, native piled up a team-best 340 total assists and finished second on the team with a 5.40 assists per set average. 8

2015 SEASON OUTLOOK While Deniston will be given every chance to defend her starting job, she is expected to receive some serious competition from freshman Sydni Ayers. Ayers comes to Waynesburg all the way from Manhattan, Montana. LIBERO/DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST Like outside hitter, the libero/defensive specialist spot features an experienced returner to lead the charge. Senior four-year standout Jessica Dorazio earned honorable mention All-PAC laurels for a second-straight season after leading the Jackets in total digs (480) and digs per set (4.21). The latter of those two marks was good enough for seventh in the conference standings.

(1.37). Defensively, her 18 blocks were good enough for second on this past fall’s roster. Sophomore Kara Sapp also returns to the squad. Sapp got her first taste of collegiate volleyball after appearing in 14 matches as a freshman. Waynesburg opens the 2015 season on Tuesday, Sept. 1, with a home match against Frostburg State University. The Yellow Jackets follow up that contest with a two-day stay at the Saint Vincent Bearcat Challenge. The Jackets are scheduled to face Allegheny can Carlow on Friday, Sept. 4, before wrapping up with The College of Wooster and Franciscan on Saturday.

This spot on the floor may be Waynesburg’s deepest, as another senior, Meghan Balogh, is also back. Balogh, a defensive specialist, finished second on the team in total digs (306) and digs per set (2.78). Freshman Cassidy Guiser will provide further depth at the defensive specialist spot. RIGHT SIDE Junior Shannon Morgan enjoyed a successful debut season with the Yellow Jackets after transferring to Waynesburg prior to the 2014 campaign. A native of Waynesburg, Morgan finished third on the team in total kills (127) and second in kills per set

COACHING STAFF STEPHANIE BENKOWSKI

Head coach Stephanie Benkowski begins her 11th season at the helm of the Waynesburg volleyball program in 2015. Over the past decade, Benkowski has seen 12 players reach All-PAC status, earned PAC Coach of the Year in 2005 and has seen numerous student-athletes earn academic honors. Waynesburg last made it to the postseason following the 2008 campaign. That year, the Jackets earned an 11-20 overall record and a 6-8 mark in PAC action. As the fifth seed in the tourney, Waynesburg picked up a 3-1 upset victory over number-four Thiel on the Tomcats’ home court. It was the first win in the conference tourney for Waynesburg since 2005. The Jackets then went on and played well against the eventual champs from Westminster during a 3-1 loss. Individually, Benkowski enjoyed a first for her time at Waynesburg as senior outside hitter Laurie Lindner was named PAC Player of the Year following the 2008 campaign. It was the first time Benkowski had coached a player to the prestigious honor. Lindner joined three of her teammates on the 2008 All-PAC squad. After a rough start to her first season (2005) at Waynesburg that had the team four games below .500, Benkowski guided the Yellow Jackets to 13-consecutive victories.

COACHING EXPERIENCE WAYNESBURG - 2005-present Head Coach POINT PARK - 2001-2004 Head Coach

Waynesburg went on to finish the season at 21-13 overall with an 11-1 mark in conference play and an appearance in the PAC Championship match. For her efforts, Benkowski earned PAC Coach of the Year accolades. The Waynesburg volleyball team has also consistently held a strong presence on the annual Fall PAC Academic Honor Roll and 2010 was no different. The Jacket volleyball team featured five players on the list. A 2001 graduate of Saint Vincent, Benkowski has also experienced much success as a player. While at Saint Vincent, she was a member of teams that compiled a record 90-46 and made three playoff appearances in four years. She received second-team all-conference accolades in each of her last two seasons with the Bearcats. In addition to starting on the volleyball team at Saint Vincent, Benkowski played four years in the outfield for the Bearcat softball team. Following her playing career, Benkowski was named the head coach at Point Park. While coaching the Pioneers for four seasons, she coached six players that earned recognition from the conference. In addition to her coaching duties at Point Park, Benkowski served as Associate Athletic Director and earned her master’s degree in Business Administration. She resides in Baden, Pa. with her husband Jason and their daughters Katarynia and Nadia.

SARA BRUSCHI

Sara Bruschi arrived at Waynesburg in 2014 with a deep pool of coaching experience from both the high school and college ranks. She most recently served as the head coach at Uniontown High School this past fall. During her one and only season with the Red Raiders, Bruschi led her squad to a 10-0 undefeated section record and a spot in the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs. Her high school experience also included three years as the head coach at one of Uniontown’s biggest rivals, Connellsville High School. Bruschi coached the Falcons from 2008 to 2010 and led the Blue and White to the WPIAL playoffs during her first year on the job. In between her stays at the two Fayette County high schools, Bruschi returned to her alma mater of Saint Vincent College to spend the 2012 campaign

14

as a volunteer assistant with the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC)-rival Bearcats. Prior to her time on the bench, she wore the green and gold of SVC from 2002-to-2005. During Bruschi’s senior season (2005), the Bearcats won a conference title and the standout middle hitter served as a team captain. She also ranked in the NAIA top 15 rankings for blocks as both a junior and senior. Bruschi graduated from Saint Vincent in 2006 with a degree in English/Communications Education. She played her high school ball at Connellsville, which she graduated from in 2002 and earned All-Fayette County laurels while excelling with the Falcons. Bruschi resides in Connellsville with her husband Josh. She also teaches eighth grade English at Connellsville Junior High School.

2014 SEASON REVIEW Final Record: 6-29 (2-16 in PAC) The Waynesburg women’s volleyball team finished in ninth place in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference in 2014. Despite the difficult season, the team swept Chatham in conference play and saw four of their six wins overall come in straight sets. Waynesburg shined at the La Roche Tournament, where it won its first two matches en route to a 2-2 run at the Pittsburgh-based event. At the conclusion of the year, Head coach Stephanie Benkowski saw a pair of Yellow Jacket stands named to the All-PAC teams. Junior Jessica Dorazio Dorazio was a consistent defensive contributor for the Jackets this season, as she led the team and finished seventh in the conference with 480 total digs. She was also fourth on the team in serve aces (19) and kills (67). The Bentworth High School graduate started all 35 of Waynesburg’s matches played this season. This is Dorazio’s second-straight season as an honorable mention pick.

Sophomore Rachel Lang played a big role in the team’s offensive efforts by finishing second on the squad with 133 total kills (1.17 kills per set). Her 487 total attempts were also the second-highest mark on the team. Lang was a force defensively, particularly at the net. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native piled up a Jacket-high 27 total blocks, 11 of which were solo swats. Another sophomore, first-year transfer Shannon Morgan, was arguably the Jackets’ top performer at middle hitter. The Waynesburg native finished second on the roter with 1.37 kills per set (127 total kills). Her 18.0 total blocks was the third-highest total for the Jackets. Freshman Delaney Deniston joined Morgan as an impact newcomer to the team. The Wheeling, West Virginia, native paced the Jackets with 389 total assists.

Junior Kourtney Skinner (pictured right) finished the year among the team leaders in a number of statistical categories. Her 297 kills were good for fifth-best in the PAC and tops with the Yellow Jackets. She also finished second on the team in digs (286) and service aces (21), and she was fifth on the squad in blocks (12). Like Dorazio, the Apollo Ridge High School graduate started all of Waynesburg’s 35 matches played this season. All of Waynesburg’s 2014 roster has the opportunity to return in 2015, as there was not a single senior in the group.

Dorazio and Skinner made up half of a group of four juniors who assumed the role of leaders on the court. Classmates Meghan Balogh and Savannah Paladin led not only with their words, but their performances on the court. Balogh finished the year ranked second on the Jackets in both total digs (306) and digs per set (2.78). Paladin also did most of her work on the defensive side of the net, where she averaged 1.57 digs per set (163 total).

THE PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), built on the basic belief that an athletic program is an integral part of college life, but not an entity in itself, looks back on sixty years of growth and ahead to years of continued academic and athletic excellence. The league’s name clearly reflects its founding principle that operational control of all aspects of intercollegiate athletics is ultimately the responsibility of the presidents of each member institution, and thus active presidential leadership and oversight is paramount in conference administration. Formally organized in 1955 by Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Case Institute of Technology, and Wayne State University, the PAC was the result of a realization that college athletics, despite numerous virtues for the individual and the institution, were gradually becoming a financial and academic burden. If athletics were to be continued, action had to be taken to place the program on its proper level. This included the premise that benefits of participation should be provided to as many students as possible. The PAC and its membership continue its original, defining mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Institutions involved understand that the key components to its progress lie in the foundation of faith in each member by each other member. It is the conviction of its membership that the PAC is the solution to the dilemma of intercollegiate athletic competition, and they have staked their athletic future on this premise. Currently comprised of 10 select private institutions – Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College – the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics, with academics at the center of each member’s philosophy. The PAC expanded its membership to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly a NCAA Division III independent. Saint Vincent, a former NAIA member, joined the conference in 2006 as it began its reclassification to NCAA Division III status. Another former NAIA member, Geneva, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play in 2007 as it started its NCAA Division III reclassification. Chatham became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007. In 2012, the PAC Presidents’ Council voted to add Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University as affiliate members in the sport of football beginning with the 2014 season. The PAC crowns league champions and awards all-conference honors in its 21 championship sports. Head coaches determine all-PAC squads for all team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. In addition to its 21 sponsored championship sports, the PAC partnered with the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) to create the single-sport Ohio River Lacrosse Conferences (ORLC & ORWLC) in 2014, with both kicking off league schedules during the spring of 2015. The PAC, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Waynesburg men and Grove City women captured the 2014-15 trophies. Staying true to its original mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence, the PAC has seen nearly 200 of its participating student-athletes recognized as Academic All-Americans, while the league has also produced numerous NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the conference named 935 of its student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who earn a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above. During the 2014-15 academic year, nine PAC student-athletes were honored with Capital One Academic All-America honors. Also, the Thomas More women’s basketball program and W&J junior wrestler Nick Carr claimed NCAA Division III national championships in their respective sports.
