PRESIDENT’S LETTER Whether you’re a parent, an athlete, a member of the media or a spirited spectator, I am pleased to welcome you to our Yellow Jacket community and look forward to cheering on the Jackets with you! As a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), Waynesburg University offers 20 NCAA Division III varsity sports for our hundreds of student-athletes. While the reasons for participation in these sports are many, all of our athletic programs are aimed at helping our student-athletes grow spiritually, intellectually and athletically during their collegiate experience. During the 2016-17 academic year, 95 Waynesburg University student-athletes earned recognition on the PAC fall and spring Academic Honor Rolls, an impressive achievement that illustrates the caliber of student-athletes at Waynesburg.

President Douglas G. Lee

Through the hard work and dedication of these same individuals, Waynesburg claimed four PAC team titles, which matches our highest total since joining the conference in 1990. Our goal is to provide our student-athletes with the best possible education and experiences that will prepare them to lead lives of purpose. We actively recruit student-athletes with high academic standards who will pursue excellence in the classroom and community while competing at the highest level in their chosen sport. In addition to the accomplishments made by our student-athletes, Waynesburg University has also been recognized as a national leader in educational value and outcomes by U.S. News and World Report, Colleges of Distinction, Money Magazine and USA Today. On behalf of Waynesburg University students, faculty and staff, I would like to thank you for your interest in our athletic programs. I hope that you enjoy another great year of athletic competition at Waynesburg University!

Douglas G. Lee President

WAYNESBURG WRESTLING ROOM

Prior to the start of the 2011-12 season, the Waynesburg University wrestling team moved into its wrestling room. The facility is located in the renovated Captain Robert C. Wiley Armory, which used to house the local Army National Guard unit before it was moved to a newer building at 500 EverGreene Drive in Waynesburg. The home of the Jacket Mat Men features two full-size wrestling mats, five-foot high wall mats, cardio equipment and areas dedicated to stretch band and kettle bell workouts. Head coach Ron Headlee is obviously excited about the future site of his team’s practices and workouts. “We will be able to have our whole team wrestling in the live competition,” Headlee said. “In the old room we had to split into two groups because of space.” The Jacket wrestling team used to hold practices in a much smaller facility in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Obviously, Headlee believes that an up-to-date practice facility will aid in his already fruitful recruiting efforts. “Showing our room to new recruits is exciting because I believe we have one of the nicest rooms in Division III,” Headlee said. “The University really helped us by giving us this facility to better accommodate the numbers we now have.”

HEAD COACH

RON HEADLEE

Record at Waynesburg: 96-67-1 Career Record: 96-67-1 5-time PAC Coach of the Year 2017 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Coach of the Year Since coming to Waynesburg before the 2008-09 season, Ron Headlee has guided the Yellow Jacket wrestling program through one the most amazing turnarounds in school athletic history.

opponent, while posting identical 1-2 records at the event. For his efforts, Headlee was nominated for rookie head coach of the year at the Division III National Championships and was also inducted into the Washington/Greene Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

Last year’s 11-14 overall record is part of a 96-67-1 overall mark posted by Headlee. He has also led the Jackets to the best Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) dual record (15-4) over over his nine years as head coach of any league team.

In all, Headlee’s wrestlers have earned nine regional individual titles, 35 PAC individual titles and taken home four PAC Outstanding Wrestler awards. Among those honorees is Garber, who was a three-time Midwest Regional champion and three-time national qualifier.

During the summer of 2016, Headlee added to his already impressive resume by being inducted into the Southwestern Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame. During his first nine years with the squad, he guided the Jackets to their first five PAC team titles in program history and helped develop eight All-Americans, including 2014 graduate Anthony Bonaventura, who placed second at 174 pounds, and 2015 graduate Luke Lohr, who became a two-time All-American after accomplishing the feat in 2013 and 2015. Lohr was also a three-time national qualifier and a fourtime PAC champion. For his efforts, Headlee has been named PAC Coach of the Year on fiveseparate occasions and was honored as the 2017 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Coach of the Year.

Before turning the Jackets around, Headlee spent 13 years as a head and assistant high school coach. Most recently, Headlee was an assistant varsity and junior high coach at Waynesburg Central High School, where he worked with Yates, who was the head coach of the Raiders until 2007. Prior to his stint with WCHS, Headlee spent nine successful years as the head coach of the Jefferson-Morgan Rockets (1988-1997). While there, Headlee helped guide along a man who many consider the greatest high school wrestler in the state of Pennsylvania, Cary Kolat. Under Headlee’s guidance, Kolat went undefeated all four years that he wore a Rocket singlet.

In 2017, Headlee guided a trio of Jackets to the national tournament. Two of those three, freshman Shaun Wilson and sophomore Jake Evans, returned to Waynesburg with All-American medals at 149 and 285 pounds, respectively.

While with the Rockets, Headlee compiled an impressive 111-25-1 record and won five Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) team championships. He also coached a total of 24 WPIAL champions, 15 state place-winners and seven state champions.

During the winter of 2015, Lohr was joined by senior teammate Sam Guidi at the NCAA Division III National Championships. The duo made program history by coming the first set of teammates to earn D III All-American status at the same tournament.

Prior to his coaching days, Headlee enjoyed tremendous success on the mats as a competitor.

After taking over a team that went 0-11 in dual matches during the 2007-08 season, Headlee, along with primary assistant John Yates, rebuilt the team from the ground up and that year’s Yellow Jackets to a 10-4 season.

After graduating from Waynesburg Central High School in 1978, Headlee moved on to Messiah College, from which he graduated in 1982 with a degree in health and physical education.

Included in those 10 dual wins were victories over PAC rivals Thiel and Washington & Jefferson. It was the first time in recorded conference history that the Jackets had completed the sweep as they went a perfect 7-0 against Division III opponents. The Jackets also upset Shippensburg, which was ranked 19th in the country at Division II.

While wrestling for the Falcons, Headlee produced an impressive record of 101-14-1, a then-record, which ranks him ninth on the school’s current career wins list. He was an NAIA all-American for his first three years at Messiah, and was the school’s first NCAA Division III All-American in 1982 after placing fifth at the national tournament.

By the time the regular season ended, the Jackets were ranked 28th in the D-III rankings by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). However, the Jackets’ accomplishments weren’t limited to just those of a team variety.

In 1996, Headlee was inducted into the Messiah Athletics Hall of Fame. Before shining with the Falcons, Headlee was a three-time section champion, a WPIAL runner-up and a PIAA state qualifier for WCHS.

At the annual PAC Championships, then-freshman Alex Evanoff and then-first-year grappler Corbin Semple won conference titles at 165 and 197 pounds, respectively.

Headlee, who also serves as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach, resides in Waynesburg with his wife Karen. The couple has two sons, Drew and Ethan. Drew is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh where he was a four-year letterman on the wrestling team, who went on to find success on the national and international competition levels as a freestyle wrestler. He has since returned to Pitt as an assistant coach. Ethan was a four-year letterman for Pitt and a Division I national qualifier

Semple then joined then-sophomore Nick Garber in winning individual titles at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championships. The pair then went on to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to compete at the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament. Both grapplers earned an upset win over a fifth-ranked

Bonaventura enjoyed his best season on the mat during his senior campaign in 2014-15, going 20-20 overall. He spent the year as the Yellow Jackets’ starting 197-pounder and scored three victories by pin and one win by technical fall.

After graduating with his undergraduate degree in Sports Management in 2015, Bonaventura completed a Master of Education Degree in Athletic Administration and Coaching in the spring of 2017. ASSISTANT COACHES

JOHN YATES

Volunteer Assistant Coach

Before the 2008-09 season, John Yates joined his good friend and long-time coaching counterpart Ron Headlee as an assistant coach on Headlee’s first staff as Waynesburg’s head man.

tled at Oklahoma State. Prior to his time as a head coach, Yates spent six seasons as a varsity assistant at WCHS and one year with the junior high program.

He is back for his 10th year with the program, his fourth as a volunteer assistant. He served as Headlee’s primary assistant over his first six seasons.

Yates came to Waynesburg after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh in 1989 with a degree in science education. At Pitt, Yates was a four-year letterman on the varsity wrestling team.

In 2008, Yates played a major role in the program’s rebirth from years of struggle. He was rewarded for his efforts by being nominated for Assistant Coach of the Year at the 2009 NCAA Division III National Championships.

Prior to joining the Panthers, Yates had a celebrated wrestling career at Seneca Valley High School. With the Raiders, Yates finished as high as third in the WPIAL and sixth in the state. He was also a Greco-Roman state champion and is a member of the Seneca Valley Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Yates came to Waynesburg after 10 years as the head coach at Waynesburg Central High School. Ironically, during part of his time as the head of the successful WCHS program, Headlee served as one of Yates’ assistant coaches.

Yates teaches science at Margaret Bell Miller Middles School in Waynesburg and currently resides in Sycamore, Pennsylvania, with his wife Dawn. The two have a son, Jake, who is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he was a member of the Tiger soccer team.

While at the helm of the Raiders, Yates produced an impressive overall record of 140-43 and coached 15 WPIAL individual champions, 20 state place-winners and six state champions, including NCAA Division I champion and Olympic bronze medalist, Coleman Scott, who wres-

2016-17 SEASON IN REVIEW It was an up-and-down year for the Waynesburg University wrestling team. After struggling for the majority of the year to fill all 10 weights through a brutally tough schedule, the YellowJackets wound up running away with their fifth Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) title in nine years, putting together one fo their best showings at the NCAA Division III regional level and crowning two All-Americans out of three national qualifiers.

NCAA Division III National Championships. He wound up leaving La Crosse, Wisconsin, with the seventh-place trophy and the title of All-American. Junior 125-pounder Tristan Buxton was nearly as dominant as Evans, going 45-5 with a 22-2 dual mark. He also went 12-0 in matches determined by pin, 2-0 in technical falls and 9-1 in major decisions. Buxton joined Evans and Wilson as PAC champs, but wound up just one win shy of joining them at nationals.

Waynesburg posted an 11-14 overall record in dual competition and went 2-1 in PAC matches. Their first conference victory of the year was a historic one as the Jackets handed Thomas More a 4112 loss in the first-ever meeting of the two schools. That win started a second half of the schedule that featured a 6-5 mark in dual matches.

A pair of standout seniors ended their respective collegiate careers with memorable last years on the mats. Filippo Crivelli became the program’s newest 100-match winner and set a new career wins record (120), while Ryan Shank won his second-straight 184-pound PAC title. He also earned his first trip to nationals, where he posted a 1-2 record.

A big reason for the team’s second-half success was the addition of freshmen Zach Mackall and Shaun Wilson. Mackall provided the team with much-needed depth at 149 and 157 pounds, while Wilson was immediately inserted into the lineup at 149. The Waynesburg native proceeded to go 22-9 on the year, win a PAC title, place second at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championships and become an All-American thanks to an eighth-place showing at nationals.

The Jackets’ fifth-and-final conference champion, freshman Kenneth Burrs, battled injury throughout the season, but was still able to go 12-6 at 197 pounds and reach the third-place match at regionals. Unfortunately, he wound up on the wrong end of a 9-7 SV1 match to just miss out on becoming what would have been a Waynesburg-record fourth qualifier for the NCAA Division III National Championships.

He was far from the only individual to have a big season, however.

A pair of veteran juniors, Derek Hull and Landon Lohr, continued to produce in the middle of the lineup, while first-year wrestlers Dan Verhovsek and Will VanNorman traded in helmets for head gear after spending the fall with the Yellow Jacket football team. Both not only saw time on the field, but posted double-digit wins on the mat.

After bursting onto the scene as a freshman in 2016, sophomore heavyweight Jake Evans put together arguable the best season on the team, and one of the best in recent program history. Evans set a new Waynesburg record for wins in a season by going 49-5 at 285 pounds. He lost just one dual match (24-1) and won an amazing 30 matches by pin (30-1).

Not to be outdone by his team, ninth-year head coach Ron Headlee picked up a couple additions to his personal trophy case. Along with grabbing his fifth PAC Coach of the Year Award, Headlee was also named Mideast Region Coach of the Year after guiding the Orange and Black to a third-place showing.

Not surprisingly, Evans blew through the field at the PAC Championships, going 3-0 with three first-period pins that took a combined 2:49 to accomplish. Evans went on to win Waynesburg’s first regional title since 2011 and make his first trip to the 2017-2018 WRESTLING MEDIA GUIDE

PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), built on the basic belief that an athletic program is an integral part of college life, but not an entity in itself, looks back on sixty years of growth and ahead to years of continued academic and athletic excellence. The league’s name clearly reflects its founding principle that operational control of all aspects of intercollegiate athletics is ultimately the responsibility of the presidents of each member institution, and thus active presidential leadership and oversight is paramount in conference administration. Formally organized in 1955 by Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Case Institute of Technology, and Wayne State University, the PAC was the result of a realization that college athletics, despite numerous virtues for the individual and the institution, were gradually becoming a financial and academic burden. If athletics were to be continued, action had to be taken to place the program on its proper level. This included the premise that benefits of participation should be provided to as many students as possible. The PAC and its membership continue its original, defining mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Institutions involved understand that the key components to its progress lie in the foundation of faith in each member by each other member. It is the conviction of its membership that the PAC is the solution to the dilemma of intercollegiate athletic competition, and they have staked their athletic future on this premise. Currently comprised of 10 select private institutions – Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College – the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics, with academics at the center of each member’s philosophy. The PAC expanded its membership to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly a NCAA Division III independent. Saint Vincent, a former NAIA member, joined the conference in 2006 as it began its reclassification to NCAA Division III status. Another former NAIA member, Geneva, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play in 2007 as it started its NCAA Division III reclassification. Chatham became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007. In 2012, the PAC Presidents’ Council voted to add Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University as affiliate members in the sport of football beginning with the 2014 season. The PAC crowns league champions and awards all-conference honors in its 21 championship sports. Head coaches determine all-PAC squads for all team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. In addition to its 21 sponsored championship sports, the PAC partnered with the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) to create the single-sport Ohio River Lacrosse Conferences (ORLC & ORWLC) in 2014, with both kicking off league schedules during the spring of 2015. The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Thomas More men and Westminster women captured the 2016-17 trophies. Staying true to its original mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence, the PAC has seen nearly 200 of its participating student-athletes recognized as Academic All-Americans, while the league has also produced numerous NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the conference named 939 of its student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who earn a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.
