Nauplion, Greece
Dear UCLA Alumni and Friends, There is nothing like the combination of elegant living on the sea and exquisite experiences on shore. Azamara Journey is a ship that promises the cruise of a lifetime. Designed to navigate into smaller, more remote ports of call, Azamara Journey gives guests the chance to see life off the beaten path, to travel in the most exotic and authentic way. Each excursion on shore is beautifully orchestrated to give you a true sense of the place and its people, to become part of the fabric rather than just observing it. Visit some of the Mediterranean's most fascinating ports - Venice, Koper, Zadar, Dubrovnik, Santorini, and Nauplion. From medieval towns to sandy beaches, sparkling harbors to ancient fortresses, flowered courtyards to Renaissance palaces, each day offers new treasures to discover. In addition to local guides and experts, you'll be traveling with popular UCLA Alumni Travel lecturer Professor Robert Gurval, UCLA Department of Classics. Past travelers describe him as “charming,” “gracious” and credited his lectures and his company with “adding a lot to the enjoyment of the trip!” For a complete bio, see below. On board, every amenity and luxurious nuance is provided. Relax in the private oasis of your stateroom, complete with butler and concierge service, flat-screen TVs, and elegant European bedding. The streamlined size of Azamara Journey allows for an intimate experience and the most impeccable service on the waters. The sumptuous dining, gorgeous staterooms and attention to every detail makes for an unforgettable passage at sea. I encourage you to make your reservation by Sept. 15 in order to take advantage of the early booking price. Sincerely,
Christel Pailet Director, Alumni Travel
UCLA Faculty Lecturer Robert Gurval is associate professor and former chair in the UCLA Department of Classics. His main research interests concern the politics, literature and culture of the early Roman imperial period. A 2006 recipient of the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award, he has created undergraduate seminars for the Honors program on a wide range of topics including Roman male identity and sexuality, the Hollywood myth behind ancient Rome and representations of Cleopatra.

Ports of Call VENICE, ITALY One of the world's most beautiful cities also happens to be one of its most unusual. Venice is made up of over 120 islands in the Adriatic Sea connected by a labyrinth of waterways instead of streets, a fascinating city built on water. KOPER, SLOVENIA A key commercial center with a Venetian past, Koper is Slovenia's only deep-water port. Stroll the narrow streets of the "old city" to the Praetorian Palace, which could easily be the setting of a Renaissance drama, sip a coffee in the square, or visit the Cathedral of St. Nazarius, the largest in Slovenia. ZADAR, CROATIA The oldest Slavic town on the sparkling Adriatic Coast, Zadar's history and culture date back over 3,000 tumultuous years. Today, Zadar charms with medieval churches, Roman ruins, an extensive archaeological museum, and a promenade that stretches along the sea. Don't miss the city's beloved symbol, the 9th-century Church of St. Donat.
DUBROVNIK, CROATIA This charming little town has been resting on the Dalmatian Coast for some 1,300 years. Once you pass through the Old Town's stone walls, you will be transported into the breathtaking medieval world of Stari Grad. Marble-paved squares, monasteries and fountains are just a few of the antiquities still standing just as they were over a thousand years ago. SANTORINI, GREECE Here on Santorini, you'll find whitewashed houses accented by roofs of the bluest blue there's no doubt that the azure waters of the Aegean have served as creative inspiration. Among the many historic sites on the island is the ancient city of Akrotiri, once buried under a thick blanket of volcanic ash over 3,600 years ago. NAUPLION, GREECE Residing on the eastern coast of the Peloponnese peninsula, Nauplion is characterized by the Palamidi Fortress - a shining example of the city's Venetian occupation in the 15th century. The picturesque vista showcasing the Greek Islands is certainly worth the 999-step climb.
Shore excursions are made available and arranged by Azamara Cruises or their representatives, who use independent contractors. All local transportation and sightseeing prior to and after the cruise program is arranged by Global Destinations Management, Ltd. and operated by Reiseb端ro Eurotours Ges.m.b.H. in Italy and BYRON ARGIRI Ltd. in Greece.
