In the Spanish gold-trading days of the 16th century, mariners hoped to find a shortcut through the Isthmus of Panama. Although Balboa conceived the possibility in 1513, the prospect of sculpting such a waterway was daunting and was eventually forgotten. Finally, 350 years later, Ferdinand de Lesseps attempted to build a sea-level canal as he had done at Suez. Disease, scandal, rain, corruption and the jungle took their toll, including 16,000-20,000 lives, and his efforts failed. By 1900, only the United States had the resources to take on the huge task. Theodore Roosevelt was committed to it, and once the treaty was signed, he started the herculean project that tested more than 35,000 men. Colonel George Washington Goethals of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction in 1902 with unprecedented speed. Working conditions were devastating; tropical diseases threatened lives and temperatures often rose to 130°F. In 1904, Colonel William Gorgas undertook a sanitation campaign that wiped out yellow fever and reduced outbreaks of malaria and bubonic plague. The work continued and the world’s largest artificial lake at that time, Gatun, was created. A winding, eight-mile channel called the “Gaillard Cut” was hewed through the Continental Divide. Six massive locks were built to raise and lower giant ships to a height of 85 feet—a remarkable engineering feat to this day. In the 1970s, the United States and Panama agreed that the canal ownership would revert to Panama on December 31, 1999. This narrow ribbon of bright water cutting through distant green hills remains a marvel. Passage through the canal—from the mighty waters of the Atlantic and Caribbean to the wide, placid Pacific—is an unforgettable experience!

In the Spanish gold-trading days of the 16th century, mariners hoped to find a shortcut through the Isthmus of Panama. Although Balboa conceived the possibility in 1513, the prospect of sculpting such a waterway was daunting and was eventually forgotten. Finally, 350 years later, Ferdinand de Lesseps attempted to build a sea-level canal as he had done at Suez. Disease, scandal, rain, corruption and the jungle took their toll, including 16,000-20,000 lives, and his efforts failed. By 1900, only the United States had the resources to take on the huge task. Theodore Roosevelt was committed to it, and once the treaty was signed, he started the herculean project that tested more than 35,000 men. Colonel George Washington Goethals of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction in 1902 with unprecedented speed. Working conditions were devastating; tropical diseases threatened lives and temperatures often rose to 130°F. In 1904, Colonel William Gorgas undertook a sanitation campaign that wiped out yellow fever and reduced outbreaks of malaria and bubonic plague. The work continued and the world’s largest artificial lake at that time, Gatun, was created. A winding, eight-mile channel called the “Gaillard Cut” was hewed through the Continental Divide. Six massive locks were built to raise and lower giant ships to a height of 85 feet—a remarkable engineering feat to this day. In the 1970s, the United States and Panama agreed that the canal ownership would revert to Panama on December 31, 1999. This narrow ribbon of bright water cutting through distant green hills remains a marvel. Passage through the canal—from the mighty waters of the Atlantic and Caribbean to the wide, placid Pacific—is an unforgettable experience!

In the Spanish gold-trading days of the 16th century, mariners hoped to find a shortcut through the Isthmus of Panama. Although Balboa conceived the possibility in 1513, the prospect of sculpting such a waterway was daunting and was eventually forgotten. Finally, 350 years later, Ferdinand de Lesseps attempted to build a sea-level canal as he had done at Suez. Disease, scandal, rain, corruption and the jungle took their toll, including 16,000-20,000 lives, and his efforts failed. By 1900, only the United States had the resources to take on the huge task. Theodore Roosevelt was committed to it, and once the treaty was signed, he started the herculean project that tested more than 35,000 men. Colonel George Washington Goethals of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction in 1902 with unprecedented speed. Working conditions were devastating; tropical diseases threatened lives and temperatures often rose to 130°F. In 1904, Colonel William Gorgas undertook a sanitation campaign that wiped out yellow fever and reduced outbreaks of malaria and bubonic plague. The work continued and the world’s largest artificial lake at that time, Gatun, was created. A winding, eight-mile channel called the “Gaillard Cut” was hewed through the Continental Divide. Six massive locks were built to raise and lower giant ships to a height of 85 feet—a remarkable engineering feat to this day. In the 1970s, the United States and Panama agreed that the canal ownership would revert to Panama on December 31, 1999. In the Spanish gold-trading days of the 16th century, mariners hoped to find a shortcut through the Isthmus of Panama. Although Balboa conceived the possibility in 1513, the prospect of sculpting such a waterway was daunting and was eventually forgotten. Finally, 350 years later, Ferdinand de Lesseps attempted to build a sea-level canal as he had done at Suez. Disease, scandal, rain, corruption and the jungle took their toll, including 16,000-20,000 lives, and his efforts failed. By 1900, only the United States had the resources to take on the huge task. Theodore Roosevelt was committed to it, and once the treaty was signed, he started the herculean project that tested more than 35,000 men. Colonel George Washington Goethals of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction in 1902 with unprecedented speed. Working conditions were devastating; tropical diseases threatened lives and temperatures often rose to 130°F. In 1904, Colonel William Gorgas undertook a sanitation campaign that wiped out yellow fever and reduced outbreaks of malaria and bubonic plague. The work continued and the world’s largest artificial lake at that time, Gatun, was created. A winding, eight-mile channel called the “Gaillard Cut” was hewed through the Continental Divide. Six massive locks were built to raise and lower giant ships to a height of 85 feet—a remarkable engineering feat to this day. In the 1970s, the United States and Panama agreed that the canal ownership would revert to Panama on December 31, 1999. This narrow ribbon of bright water cutting through distant green hills remains a marvel. Passage through the canal—from the mighty waters of the Atlantic and Caribbean to the wide, placid Pacific—is an unforgettable experience!
