Florida In the early 1900s, Miami was nicknamed the Magic City because it seemed to have sprung into a metropolis from the beaches of Biscayne Bay. Today, this glitzy urban playground is also regarded as the Gateway to Latin America.

TORTOLA

British Virgin Islands

ST. BARTHS

The largest island and capital of the BVI, Tortola was named for the Spanish word for “turtle dove.” This is the ultimate Caribbean paradise for nature lovers, sunseekers and marine sports enthusiasts. Translucent water sparkles over emerald reefs and palm-fringed foliage frames secluded white sand beaches. Mount Sage National Park is the rainforest home to the highest peak in all the Virgin Islands at 1,716 feet (523 m). Bustling Road Town, nestled in a scenic natural harbor, is the center of island life. In Smuggler’s Cove, a unique “living museum” at the Honor Bar was used in the film version of Hemingway’s The Old Man and The Sea.

St. Barths

From its picture-postcard harbor to a ring of 20 spectacular beaches, many Caribbean connoisseurs consider this beautiful little island to be the closest thing to heaven on earth. Rolling hills, quaint villages and sweeping valleys are surrounded by clear waters, coral reefs and blue-green lagoons. A favorite retreat for the rich and famous, St. Barthélemy (St. Barths) is renowned for its natural beauty, delicious cuisine, chic boutiques and relaxed ambience.

ST. MAARTEN Netherlands Antilles On an island shared by France and the Netherlands, the colorful port of Philipsburg is found on the southern half, or Dutch side, of St. Maarten. A cosmopolitan capital, it is a shopper’s delight and features such unique sights as buildings that showcase the West Indian “gingerbread” trim. The outlying region unfolds with breathtaking scenery. “Eco-adventurers” might wish to scuba dive among coral reefs teeming with marine life or set out on an invigorating hike. Or perhaps, visit the French side of the island to fully experience its cultural differences.

ARUBA Kingdom of the Netherlands Cruise into Aruba and discover gold— mined not from underground but streaming from an azure Caribbean sky overhead. Bask in the sun’s gilded rays on one of the island’s pristine beaches, or stroll along a craggy landscape and the rolling mounds of majestic sand dunes. In Oranjestad, Aruba’s capital city, explore charming streets lined with nostalgic Dutch-style buildings and take advantage of duty-free shopping.

Traditional Costa Rican attire, Caldera

Travel through a verdant, pristine countryside abundant with mountains and valleys, thick jungles and cultivated plantations. The ecological fascinations of Costa Rica are nature’s majesty on splendid display. NOTE: The sequence of the port descriptions listed above may not reflect that of your cruise direction. For the route order of your itinerary, please refer to the day-by-day itinerary on the reverse-side pricing panel.

OPTIONAL THREENIGHT PRE-CRUISE EXTENSION: SAN JOSÉ, COSTA RICA Explore the sunny splendor of Costa Rica during this optional extension to enhance your overall trip experience. In the Spanish gold-trading days of the 16th century, mariners hoped to find a shortcut through the Isthmus of Panama. Although Balboa conceived the possibility in 1513, the prospect of sculpting such a waterway was daunting and was eventually forgotten. Finally, 350 years later, Ferdinand de Lesseps attempted to build a sea-level canal as he had done at Suez. Disease, scandal, rain, corruption and the jungle took their toll, including 16,000-20,000 lives, and his efforts failed. By 1900, only the United States had the resources to take on the huge task. Theodore Roosevelt was committed to it, and once the treaty was signed, he started the herculean project that tested more than 35,000 men. Colonel George Washington Goethals of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction in 1902 with unprecedented speed. Working conditions were devastating; tropical diseases threatened lives and temperatures often rose to 130°F. In 1904, Colonel William Gorgas undertook a sanitation campaign that wiped out yellow fever and reduced outbreaks of malaria and bubonic plague. The work continued and the world’s largest artificial lake at that time, Gatun, was created. A winding, eight-mile channel called the “Gaillard Cut” was hewed through the Continental Divide. Six massive locks were built to raise and lower giant ships to a height of 85 feet—a remarkable engineering feat to this day. In the 1970s, the United States and Panama agreed that the canal ownership would revert to Panama on December 31, 1999. This narrow ribbon of bright water cutting through distant green hills remains a marvel. Passage through the canal—from the mighty waters of the Atlantic and Caribbean to the wide, placid Pacific—is an unforgettable experience!

The outlying region unfolds with breathtaking scenery. “Eco-adventurers” might wish to scuba dive among coral reefs teeming with marine life or set out on an invigorating hike. Or perhaps, visit the French side of the island to fully experience its cultural differences.
