TALK OF THE TOWN Good afternoon everyone and welcome to our second pre-season game down here at the Red Industries Stadium. Today we welcome Stafford Rangers to our ground having made the short trip along the A34. It was certainly an entertaining game last Saturday against Salford City with Town, with five players missing, put up a good performance with th e youngsters showing up well. And what about the goal from Ethan Vale - not a bad one to start the season. It was good to meet up with James Melhado again and we wish him well in his second year at Salford. Yesterday we will have found out our opponents in the early rounds of the Emirates FA Cup and the Isuzu FA Trophy as well as the FA Youth Cup so listen out this afternoon for the draws. We have seen two of our ex players moving to other clubs in the ELF in the last couple of weeks Kelvin Mel!or to Crewe and Cohen Brammall to Rotherham. We are back down here again next Saturday when our opponents will be Chasetown and will kick off again at 3pm with prices £5 and £3 with Under 16s free when accompanied by an adult.

View from the Dugout Today we welcome Stafford Rangers to the Red Industries stadium in what is the 3rd game of pre-season. It’s another good test for us and another opportunity for our fans to see how the team is shaping up. We are very happy with the progress we have made regarding the retention of our current squad who are growing as individuals and as players. To think that most of these young talented players are still between 4 and 8 years from hitting their prime, which to me shows that the future is bright for this group of players. Fitness levels have been impressive this early on in pre season and is definitely a massive plus going into these games. We will expect a good game to watch for the fans and hope you all enjoy the match and our hospitality and facilities. Enjoy your day

CHAIRMAN CHATS With Gavin Appleby It was great to get back to our normal Saturday afternoon football with the visit of Salford City last week. This week, we thank Stafford Rangers for the game and for continuing our yearly fixtures against each other, which no doubt prove very useful to both sets of managers in preparation for the new season. Many clubs, including those on the pitch today, share many of the same struggles week in and week out, often just at a different level. I am sure Stafford are the same as us, in relying on the generosity of their sponsors to keep the club running month to month and year to year. I would like to just take a few lines in this column to thank OUR wonderful sponsors for their continued contribution to our club. Although they range in monetary terms, they certainly all help! Our Reserve team started their pre-season last weekend and it was an excellent turnout. They have their first fixtures lined up and we can report progress in our next programme notes. The Women's team also gathers pace, with plenty of signings and progression. The majority of youth teams are now back training raring to go once their leagues commence following the 6 week holidays. I hope you all enjoy the game today and visit us again very soon. Come on the Castle!

NEWCASTLE TOWN VS SALFORD CITY Report with Chris Sweetman

NEWCASTLE Town slumped to a 3-1 defeat, despite a spirited display against League Two Salford City. Salford opened the scoring after just four minutes, when Matt Smith turned in an excellent long cross. Salford double their lead on 28 minutes, as Smith rose highest to head in his second goal. But Newcastle struck back minutes later, with a thunderous long-range strike from Ethan Vale. Salford made six changes at the break, which paid dividends soon into the second half, as Brandon Thomas-Asante’s low, powerful shot made it 3-1 to the visitors. Newcastle continued to push hard, but Salford showed their quality by monopolising possession for much of the rest of the half. However, dogged defending from Newcastle meant that Salford were unable to convert their pressure into more goals.

WELCOME STAFFORD RANGERS RECENT HISTORY in 2001/02 Phil Robinson replaced Painter as manager and the club finished Southern Premier runners up in his first year (2002/03) as well as winning the Staffs Senior Cup and taking the club to the 1st Round of the FA Cup for the first time in a decade. The following season, Rangers finished 3rd and qualified for the newly formed Conference North. After topping the table for much of the 2005/06 season, Rangers eventually finished runners up but won promotion back to the non-league top flight after a play-off victory over Droylsden. Rangers’ stay In the Conference Premier lasted just two seasons before they were relegated back to Conference North, but the cost of those two years lingered and once more the future of the club was in doubt. The appointment of big name managers such as Steve Bull, Tim Flowers and Matt Elliott failed to improve fortunes and Rangers dropped to the third tier of the pyramid, returning to the NPL for 2011/12. Greg Clowes then took charge, but two more disappointing years followed before a disastrous start to the 2013/14 season ended Clowes’ reign. Another big name appointment, Andy Mutch, was another failure and his replacement, Graham Heathcote, couldn’t turn results around. Neil Kitching took the managerial reins for the start of the 2014/15 season following his move from Rushall Olympic and major changes were also made at Boardroom level. However the season started badly with the untimely death of Secretary and Director Mike Hughes who had guided the club through difficult times. Rangers narrowly missed out on the play-offs on goal difference but did win the Staffordshire Senior Cup beating Leek Town in the final at Vale Park and on a positive note gates were up by 25%. The club was now moving forward with new Chairman John Bromley leading the way as he set about renovating the Social Club, which for many years has provided funding for the football section. In 2015/16, Neil Kitching and his management staff Nick Amos and Martin Prentice led the ‘Boro to the Evo-Stik First Division South title, which went right to the wire with a draw away to Coalville Town. Gates were again up, and the club had turned the corner both on and off the field of play. In 2016/17, Rangers consolidated their position in the Evo-Stik Norther Premier League finishing a creditable 13th The season was marred by passing of the club’s patron Roly Tonge, who for many years had been instrumental in keeping the club afloat. A mention here also of the demise of President Leon Douglas and Director Cliff Went. These gentlemen were for many years the backbone of Stafford Rangers Football Club

Rangers fared a little better in 2017/18 finishing just one place above that of the previous season. A win against local rivals Hednesford Town in the Staffs Senior Cup final brought the season to an end. Off the field the excellent work continued both in the Social Club and in the stadium. The start of the 2018/19 brought about another managerial change as long time Rangers favourite Steve Burr moved into the hot seat. The FA’s re-structuring of the non-league pyramid also brought many changes in the playing squad. Rangers struggled however in the lower end of the table and at the start of 2019, Burr resigned and was replaced by his two assistants Alex Meechan and Andy Fearn as joint managers. The pair worked wonders and the team moved away from the relegation positions. In October 2018 Rangers were saddened by the passing of their President and former Chairman Jon Downing. Jon had suffered for two years from motor neurone disease. Jon had been an inspirational figure at the club for many years. On 14 December 2018 a fan based project to build a stand at the Town End of the stadium came to fruition. The Shed End opening was celebrated with a 4-1 win over Hednesford Town. Meechan and Fearn were retained as joint Managers for the 2019/20 season and built what was on paper a strong squad. However as the season progressed an unprecedented succession of injuries hampered Rangers progress. In March 2020 football was halted by the Corona Virus Pandemic. At this time Rangers were at the foot of the table and looked odds on for relegation. However, the Northern Premier League, with a resumption looking very unlikely, decided to make the league null and void with no promotions or relegation. A decision which certainly came to Rangers rescue. The Managerial duo of Meechan and Fearn were relieved of their duties. The following season 2020/21 was again declared null and void with Rangers again at the foot of the table. New Manager Jody Banim’s reign was short lived, and he left the club. Former assistant manager Andy Fearn joined the Board of Directors in a new role of Director of Football. This season, 2021/22, former player, Matty Hill, has taken over as manager with Dale Belford as his assistant. Currently the duo are building a new squad and there are early indications for a better season.

NIGEL KEOGH

This summer we have had changes to our first team not just on the pitch but off the pitch with the welcome introduction of Nigel Keogh, we caught up with him this week to get a quick inside into the new assistant manager. Nigel first off, welcome to Newcastle Town just for a few supporters who might not have seen you just give us a quick overview of yourself where you have played and coaches previously and also what attracted you to come and join the Castle. Firstly I would like to thank Robin and everyone at the club for the kind welcome and the opportunity to be part of Newcastle Town Football Club. I have been involved in football for the majority of my 42 years spending my youth as a schoolboy working under current England assistant manager, Steve Holland at Crewe Alexandra. I moved to Chester at the age of 16 where I had the pleasure of being managed by Kevin Ratcliffe in league football. I was forced to step away from football due to injury and worked through my coaching badges now working as the Head coach in a full time football academy. I also spent 3 years working as the 1st team coach at Buxton Football Club (2 years disrupted by covid) with last year being part of the championship winning management team in the Northern Premier League. I’ve known Robin for a couple of years now and we have built a good relationship and it was evident from early on that we shared the same principles on playing styles and youth development. To be asked to be part of the management staff at Castle was a privilege and a no brainer for me. Robin, Grovesy, the players and all the staff have made me feel very settled, very quickly. The infrastructure and the project that the club have in place is very exciting for all involved and from the first discussion I wanted to be part of the clubs development and future. I am very much a hands on coach and have thoroughly enjoyed the first few weeks of pre season. Both Robin and Grovesy have built a very talented group of players, I’m hoping with my knowledge and experience to support the guys by encouraging hard work, standards and exciting football to help drive the club to the top end of the table. Look forward to meeting you all at our upcoming fixtures to support the lads. So coming into the club was there any areas you looked at early on and said to Robin and the team we need to look to add here or look to imporve the way we do this and that or is it a case of you coming and and setteling in from the off with the guys ? We discussed what went well and not so well last season. We have looked at the structure of training and how the lads manage their bodies. We want them to take ownership and set standards in the change room and in training. We have looked at professionalism of the field and carrying this through into all games. We have planned well and will make sure the lads are the fittest in the league and they can be still pushing hard into the final game. What would you describe your coaching style as, are you someone who would read the game and let the guys identify problems or someone who is straight into errors and mistakes I’m a coach that’s very driven with good man management skills. I see every contact with the players as an opportunity to educate, present scenarios and seek the players opinions and ideas to solve what’s placed in front of them. I’m very much a coach that’s believes in a specific way to play but have the understanding to educate any player on various playing styles and needs of in game management. You have to allow the players to express themselves, but have that level of authority to also set demands.
