VIEW FROM THE DUGOUT

Good afternoon and welcome to all spectators who have made the trip to Pershall Park today. I also would like to welcome the players, coaching staff, and committee members from Abbey Hulton Utd. A club I know well from my previous time working there and I look forward to seeing some familiar faces. Last Saturday was simply not good enough in terms of performance or attitude from our team. After dominating the first 20 minutes of the game, we failed to take our chances. Maine Road punished us and after scoring the first goal, we seemed to revert back to the old Eccleshall side that was in place before we arrived. We’ve set higher standards than those on display on Saturday and I can only apologise to anybody who paid to come and watch us. Today is a local derby so the form book goes out the window. It can simply come down to who wants it more on the day, so we will need to show the same desire and commitment we had in my first two games here. We’ve worked hard on the training pitch this week to correct the mistakes of the last two games. We have a couple of new additions to bring into the squad which at the time of writing this column are still to be registered and confirmed. Last week showed to me and my coaching staff we are perhaps lacking some experience, so this is something that we are addressing. We also have key players struggling with injury at the minute so it’s important we can get them back into our side at the earliest opportunity. Thank you for your continued support of this team.

BITS AND PIECES ECCLESHALL REUNION OF ‘THE CLASS OF 90’

Saturday’s match at Pershall Park against Maine Road also saw a reunion of past Eccleshall players and club officials. Organised by former Eagles manager, Kenny Roberts, many of the players attending were from the Staffordshire Senior League title winning side of 1989/90. Kenny has organised the annual get together over the last few years and ties it in with an Eagles home match. Each one brings some new additions to the group and, aside from enjoying club hospitality, gives them the chance to reminisce about past times and games and see the continuing changes at Pershall Park compared with when they played. On Saturday, around twenty-four came along, some with their wives, and all enjoyed the afternoon. Club Secretary, Jim Tunney, said: “It was good to see so many past players back at the ground again and they are always welcome. The 89/90 team was one of the best I have known in my time at Eccleshall, with so many decent players. The fact they still get together some thirty years on shows the bonding and team spirit which existed back then and continues to this day”. (Photo shows the gathering in the new stand at Pershall Park before Saturday’s match)

BITS AND PIECES Presentation to Bill Grinham and Richard Marsh The club also took the opportunity at the Maine Road match to make a presentation to Bill Grinham and Richard Marsh, who are both directors of the club and members of the Eccleshall Club Management Committee. Both Bill and Richard have put in many years of work to take the club forward to where it is today. The awards were presented at half time by former Eagles manager, Kenny Roberts, to mark over thirty-five years of outstanding service to Eccleshall Football Club and are well deserved. Congratulations Bill and Richard! (photos show Kenny presenting the awards to Bill and Richard)

Unwanted League Milestone The NWCL website this week revealed a club milestone from the Maine Road match. The four goals conceded in the game brought Eccleshall to their 1,350th conceded goal since joining the league. Need to get meaner defensively lads!

Staffordshire FA Senior Cup Match arrangements for the Eagles home tie against Port Vale in the Staffordshire FA Senior Cup have now been finalised. The match will be played at Pershall Park on Tuesday 16. November with a 7.45pm kick off. Normal admission prices for first team games will apply and spectators will be able to pay on the gate on the evening.

Eccleshall FC There has been football in the town of Eccleshall for over 100 years but very little archive material is available from those early years. However, we do know that Eccleshall Football Club was reformed in 1971 with the team being made up of locals and staff from the Eccleshall Secondary School which also provided training and playing facilities. At that time, the club was called Eccleshall Old Boys Football Club. In 1974, the team won their first trophies; the Mid-Staffs 3rd Division Cup and were also runners-up in that division, gaining promotion to Division 2. Old Boys was dropped from the club’s name and in 1979 the first team joined the Staffordshire County League (North) and a third team was formed. In 1981, with the help of grants, fund raising and a loan, a four-acre field was purchased at Pershall. Then manager, Ted Dickinson, was the driving force behind the fund raising. In the same year, the first team moved into the Premier Division of the Staffordshire County League (North). Work began converting the field into a football ground. In 1982, a building was purchased from British Telecom and, with a lot of hard work over the next couple of years on the building, car park and pitch, Pershall Park, as it was christened, was ready. In the 1983-84 season, the first team won the Staffordshire County League Premier Division Championship, the Premier Division Cup and the May Bank Cup. During the 1989-90 season, the first team won the Staffordshire Senior League title and the 1990-91 season saw the club entering the FA Vase for the first time. In 1991-92, the club reached the FA Vase 2nd round having gone through all the preliminary stages but lost at home to Wisbech Town 2-0 in front of a then record crowd of 368. The first team fared well in the league in the mid to late 90’s, finishing 3rd (97-98), 6th (98-99), 2nd (99-00) and 3rd (00-01). Eccleshall reserves won the Staffordshire County League (North) in 1999-2000 moving to the West Midlands (Regional) League Division One (North) for the start of the following season. In the 2001-2002 season, the first team won the Springbank Vending Midland League Championship.

Eccleshall FC In 2002-2003 Eccleshall’s first team joined the North West Counties Football League after securing both the Springbank Vending Midland League title and Staffordshire FA Vase. In probably the most successful season in the club’s history, our second team were also Staffordshire County League champions and our Under 18s won the Sentinel Cup. For good measure, our Under 16s won the Staffordshire FA County Cup, the Mid-Staffordshire League Cup and the Sentinel Shield. Regarding the Sentinel competitions, the last time a club had won both trophies in the same season had been some twenty five years previously – a great achievement. The 2012-13 season marked the completion of 10 years in the North West Counties League and saw the club achieve its highest ever placing of sixth in Division 1. In 2017-18, our Under 17s had a very successful season, winning the Potteries Junior Youth League Cup, Staffordshire FA Youth Cup and finishing runners up in the league. Over the years since 1981-82, significant work has been undertaken to develop both the ground and the facilities to the required standard of the National League Pyramid which the club now enjoys. This includes enclosing the ground, the installation of floodlights, building a covered seated stand and pitch levelling. In 2019, a new toilet block was installed and previously the clubhouse was refurbished and upgraded with the addition of a treatment room and a security system. Prior to the 2018/19 season, a new kitchen and refreshments bar was added. For the 2021-22 season the team dugouts have been replaced and more spectator improvements made. Further developments to the ground are planned for the future. All of this has been achieved by a strong committee management team behind the scenes, a number of which have given many years of service to Eccleshall FC together with the addition of new members who are helping to take the club forward. The club has now added a number of junior teams as we look to develop a junior section. Our second pitch has been upgraded and improved to accommodate this. 2021 sees Eccleshall Football Club celebrate its 50th anniversary and, as can be seen from the above, much has been achieved over that time. We look forward to seeing what the future brings. We consider ourselves a friendly club and look forward to welcoming you to Pershall Park in the future and hope you will enjoy the facilities and the football.

Welcome to ABBEY HULTON UTD Abbey Hulton United Football Club was formed 73 years ago in 1947, making it one of the oldest formed clubs still playing Saturday football in North Staffordshire. During its very early days the club played on Council land in the Abbey Hulton area. It continued to use this facility for the first 15 years, despite the fact that the changing facilities were more than a mile away from the actual pitch. In 1962 it was decided that the team should move to the Parks facility at Bucknall Park which was complete with its own changing rooms and showers adjacent to the pitch. What a luxury. The team continued to use Bucknall Park for another 23 years, until 1985. During the period from 1947 to 1985 the team played in many local junior leagues such as: • The Longton League • Fenton and District League • Burslem and Tunstall League • Newcastle and District League They graced all the above leagues with great distinction. Over the years the club became more financially stable and grew in ambition. Finally in 1985 they acquired a piece of land at Birches Head Road on which it was able to obtain a 99 year lease. This is the clubs current address. Immediately, a clubhouse was built containing a bar and changing rooms for both teams and officials. At the same time an outside 5 a-side football facility was built, complete with floodlights. Having moved to this new facility the club opted to join the North Staffs Alliance League. It completed in this leauge before seeking election to one of the top leagues in the area, The Staffs County League (North), in 1987. The team played in this league and finally had a momentous season in 1997-1998 by winning the league, the cup and also the fair play award all in one season. Having achieved this feat the club applied to join what is the top junior league in North Staffordshire, the Staffordshire County Senior League. In 2017 Abbey Hulton United won the Staffordshire County Senior Premier League Championship and were promoted to the North West County Football League.

EAGLES POOR RUN CONTINUES

After last week’s four goal defeat at Pershall Park to FC Isle of Man, Eccleshall were hoping to get back on track against visitors Maine Road. Jordan Benton returned after injury, but skipper Harvey Collins and Jake Langdridge were missing. Manager Liam Kelly included new signing, Kyle Johnson, in the starting line-up. In the early stages, both sides created chances with Eccleshall having the edge. Keeper Aaron Woolrich gave home fans an early scare when he fumbled the ball but managed to gather at the second attempt. Then Luke Lewis cut to the by-line and the low cross found Louis Downs whose effort was blocked. On 18 minutes, the visitors took the lead when Woolrich’s throw was intercepted and the ball was squared to their skipper, Ben Mooney, whose low drive found the bottom corner of the net. Eagles came back and a Callum Feeney free kick just failed to find Lewis arriving at the back post. On 39 minutes, Maine Road scored again when a corner by Louis Edwards wasn’t cleared, allowing Ryan Eiselt to head home. Feeney had another chance but fired over from outside the box. Eccleshall had been the better team until going behind, but Maine Road became more dominant from then on. HT: Eccleshall 0 Maine Road 2 Eagles faced an uphill challenge as the second half got under way and Yousif Yousif had an early shot saved by Woolrich. Moments later, a Joseph Keyworth effort was just over the bar. Maine Road had Abdullahi Ahmed sin-binned, and Eccleshall looked to capitalise as Downs had a shot from outside the box saved by keeper Peter Monteith and then had a volley just wide of the post. Manager Kelly brought on Jordan Hall and Tom Wakefield as Eccleshall looked to get a goal back, but it was the visitors who had another chance when a free kick led to an Edwards header being collected by Woolrich. On 75 minutes, the game moved out of Eagles’ reach when Maine Road sub, Sajjad Elhassan, fired home to make it 3-0. Soon after, Hall put in a cross which Wakefield failed to connect with. James Redford came on for Liam Tomlin but with ten minutes to go, Maine Road forced three successive corners and, from the last one, Mooney’s downward header beat both the Eagles defence and Woolrich to bounce up into the roof of the net to give them an unassailable 4-0 lead. With time ticking away, further chances fell to Elhassan and Yousif before Wakefield forced a corner in added time which came to nothing. FT: Eccleshall 0 Maine Road 4 Two successive four goal defeats at home are starting to give some cause for concern, with the Eagles having already played more than half of their season’s matches at Pershall Park after next week’s visit of Abbey Hulton United and some tough away fixtures to come. This result dropped Eccleshall into the bottom two, the only positive being that they are still within catching distance of teams above them. They need goals and wins quickly. Eagles: Woolrich, Tomlin (Redford), Woodroffe, Benton, Taylor, Dunn, Lewis, Feeney, Johnson (Hall), Carr, Downs (Wakefield). Unused subs: Dundas, Azam Referee: Mr Justice Jacobs Attendance: 96
