Good Afternoon and welcome to the Greenfields Sports Arena for today’s match v Bootle. I would like to wish all the players, staff and supporters an enjoyable day here in Shropshire and a safe journey back home. Although we have competed well for the majority of the season, the table doesn’t lie and we now find ourselves rock bottom. We must ensure we do not get too far behind others above us in the table as with the potential of four relegation places to be fought over, it will be very difficult to survive. This may seem negative but it is also the reality of the situation we find ourselves in. A number of players have found the step up from step 6 and 5 football difficult with some players deciding to move back to that level of competition. Players will have to be added in the next few weeks as no doubt, injuries and suspensions will occur. Let's hope for a positive result today.

BOOTLE FC
www.bootlefc.com
The original Bootle FC were formed in 1880 and played adjacent to
Bootle Cricket Club, on Hawthorne Road. The club were Everton FC’s main rivals and competed with Everton for the prestigious place in the newly formed Football League. Because only
one club per area were permitted to join, Bootle narrowly lost out, despite the fact that in the run up to the decision Everton were banned from both the FA Cup and the Liverpool Senior
Cup the previous year. However Bootle lost out and in 1889–90 Bootle became founder members of the Football Alliance,
which became the newly formed Football League second division. That season was the most successful as the club finished league runners-up and reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, losing to Blackburn Rovers.
When the Alliance merged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle became founder members of the new Second Division. However, despite finishing in a respectable 8th place, the club dropped out after one season due to ongoing financial problems. Ironically a new local club, Liverpool, took Bootle’s place in the second division. The possible resurrection of a Bootle team became a distinct probability in August 1947 when local councillors identified the popularity and talent on show in the ‘Bootle JOC’ league and knew the town was big enough to be put back on the football map with its own team again. For years now it had been an exporter of its many players to other clubs, both professional and semi-professional. The promise of sponsorship money from local businesses brought great optimism and the issue of one shilling shares further boosted club finances. After local residents were assured that the ground at Bootle Stadium (Maguire Avenue) would not be used solely as a football ground, an application to join the Lancashire Combination for the 1948/49 season was made, and accepted. Club colours even posed a problem, red or blue were dismissed for fear of showing favour to either of the ‘big two’ so it was agreed that, as the original Bootle FC wore white shorts, this colour would be adopted. Players mostly came from the local league and surrounding clubs, however one player that Bootle overlooked was a tall, blonde, ex-prisoner- of-war German, Bert Trautman. Trautman, then living in Huyton, trained with Bootle at the stadium for several weeks but, with the area taking such a heavy pounding during the war, it was decided not to tempt any local bitterness and he was allowed to join St Helens Town and of course moved on to FA Cup and Manchester City folklore. They kicked off their new campaign in 1948 against Barnoldswick and district. The league was won at the first attempt. However, Bootle struggled in the top-flight and after several tough seasons and also a change in Council priorities they withdrew from the league and folded during the 1953–54 campaign.
BOOTLE FC In 1953, the current club was formed as Langton with Frank Doran Senior being one of the founding members. The club played in the various local Bootle leagues. After a very successful spell in the Liverpool County Combination – winning the leagues and cups on various occasions the club requested to change its name to the latest incarnation of Bootle FC. This was accepted in 1973 and a year later ‘the Bucks’ joined the Lancashire Combination.
One of only two in the North being built for football, this is a new landmark for Bootle FC. The new pitch goes hand in hand with the investment off the pitch with the investment in the facilities making it a massive community asset.
After winning the Combination in both 1976 and 1977, Bootle then joined the Second Division of the Cheshire County League, which was won in the first season, and were promoted to the First Division. In 1982 the Cheshire County League was one of the leagues that merged to form the North West Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming a member of the First Division (Which is now called the Premier Division). The club spent most of their time in the First Division until 2000 when the club was relegated to the Second Division.
Anyone involved with football both locally and across the North West would have known Frank, or Mr Bootle as he was affectionately known, for his booming voice, quick wit and his extensive knowledge and love of football.
However, despite finishing 6th in 2002, the club dropped into the Liverpool County Combination as Bucks Park on Copy Lane closed its doors for the final time. In 2006 the club, with a new ground on Vesty Road, Bootle were elected back into Division 2 of the North West Counties League. In 2009 Bootle won promotion to the NWCFL Premier Division and also won the Championship. In 2009/10, the first season back in the NWCFL Premier Division Bootle finished 3rd. IThey equalled the 3rd place again in 2012. In 2016/17 they finished runner-up which is their highest placing in the NWCFL. In 2018-19 the Bucks went on an amazing 20 game winning run that saw us in the driving seat to get promoted on the final day of the season with one more win. However that win was one too many and the club agonisingly missed out after a 1-1 draw, and so once again finished runners-up. In Spring 2020, a huge investment was made on the pitch, with a new ‘hybrid’ pitch being built with the help of the football foundation and Sport England.
Everyone associated with the club was left shocked and saddened in January following the sad passing of our President, Frank Doran Senior.
Frank was a Docker, but more importantly for him, a footballer who was part of the 1954 Langton FC team that became the latest incarnation of Bootle FC. It was Frank who drove the club forward, as player, manager, secretary, chairman, groundsman - you name it - and latterly president of the club. He would be seen every day up at both Bucks Park, on Copy Lane, and more recently at Vesty Road doing one job or another at the club, and that continued right up until December when the latest lockdown happened. Frank’s memory will last forever in the town of Bootle, and in the hearts of everyone who knew him. In May of this year, the club’s promotion to the Northern Premier League Division 1 West was confirmed by the Football Association. This is now the highest level that Bootle FC has competed at since we reformed in 1954 and is a testament to the work started by Frank Doran Snr and carried on today by Joe Doran. We now feel we have got all the foundations in place for the club to keep going on this journey. Our fan base is increasing year on year, we own one of the best pitches in Non-League football, our ground and facilities have improved considerably in the last few years, we are developing our youth teams, and we are forever increasing our presence in the local community.

BOOTLE FC PLAYERS Brian Richardson - No stranger to anyone in Non-League football, Richardson joined the club from FC United of Manchester earlier this month. The former Skelmersdale United assistant has a wealth of experience, particularly of this division, having most recently managed Prescot Cables, where on two occasions they narrowly missed out on promotion. Ryan Jones - Currently in his second spell with the club, the goalkeeper re-joined the Bucks from Radcliffe back in November 2017. Originally joining from AFC Liverpool two years earlier, Jones, a former Leeds United youth scholar, has also played for Stockport County, Bacup Borough and Bradford Park Avenue. Jack McGovern - Joined the club in the summer of 2018 having previously represented Cammel Lairds in the North West Counties League. Previous clubs include Chester Nomads, Tiverton Town and Plymouth Argyle Youth Academy. Jay Roberts - One of the club’s newest recruits, Roberts has plenty of experience in the Northern Premier League Division One and returns to the Bucks at the start of September from Widnes having had spells with us in the North West Counties. Kieran Halligan - One of the club’s longest serving players, the right-back has established himself as fans favourite since his arrival seven years ago. Halligan has been an everpresent for the Bucks in recent years. Michael Carberry - Another player who is in his second spell with the club, with his dad having also represented the Bucks in the past. Leaving for Runcorn Town in the summer of 2017, Carberry re-joined the club a year later. Will Bell - Joined the club last season from Colwyn Bay, having previously played for Bala Town in the Welsh Premier League. A commanding centre-back, Bell also spent time at Morecambe as a youth scholar before making the switch to Non-League. James McCarten - One of the club’s newest recruits, the centre-back joined the club in the summer from City of Liverpool. The former Everton youth scholar was made club captain during the course of his second full season with the Purps, having joined them from Warrington Town.
Oliver Broe - The full-back joined the club in the summer having featured for Farsley Celtic during pre-season. Having spent 10-years at Liverpool, Broe then joined Wigan Athletic where he was part of the side that reached the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup. Liam Loughlin - The central-midfielder arrived at the club in February 2016 after 5 years with AFC Liverpool. A former Buck who made appearances for former manager Chris O’Brien, Liam went on to play in the League of Wales and Evo-Stik before returning to NWCFL with AFC. Since his return to the club, Loughlin has been the club’s first team captain and played a key role in helping us to promotion. Connor Millington - Another who has played a key role in the club’s promotion. Millington joined the club in the summer of 2017 from local side Aigburth People’s Hall. The central-midfielder already has Northern Premier League experience having played for Warrington Town in the past. Jordan Wynne - Originally starting out at AFC Fylde, the midfielder joined the club in the summer having also had spells with Prescot Cables in the past. A box-to-box operator, Wynne arrives at the club with plenty of NPL experiences Jack McGowan - An ever-present since returning to the club properly last season, McGowan has quickly established himself as a fans favourite. Having had numerous short spells with the club in the past, the forward is another with NPL experience having represented Cammel Lairds in the league. Ben Hodgkinson - The forward re-joined the club in February 2020 after he left Widnes by mutual consent. Hodkinson joined the Whites in November 2017 from the Bucks and went on to score 42 goals in the NWCFL and NPL. He has also represented Skelmersdale United in the past. Carl Peers - The midfielder is another who is in his second spell with the club. Having originally joined in the summer of 2016, he enjoyed a fine debut season but departed for Radcliffe the previous summer. However, he returned in November 2017 and has been instrumental in the club’s recent success. Tom Peterson - The forward joined the club from Fleetwood Town following the conclusion of his scholarship back in the summer of 2013. He then left the club to join City of Liverpool three years later, but returned last summer after scoring 64 times in 158 appearances for the Purps.
