THE DUGOUT VIEW Good afternoon and welcome to the first game of the 22/23 season. It seems a lifetime since our final game of last season at home to Sandbach but I'm excited to kick things off today and see what the season holds for my side. We’ve made some really good additions over the summer and managed to retain the services of most of my playing squad from last season. We’ve bought in players who have experience in this league and higher, as well as giving a few lads from the Staffs County Senior League a much-deserved chance to step up. It was great to get the signing of Ant Malbon over the line this week whose experience will play a massive part on and off the pitch for my young squad. Pre-season has been a long and hard couple of months for the players and we’ve really tested them with the caliber of opposition and I now feel we are ready for today's game. There seems to be a real excitement around the club again after finishing last season so strongly along with the signings we have made but I do have to manage expectations early doors. It’s no secret that last season could have seen us relegated and our first target will be to hit the 39 point mark that saw us reach safety last season. We will be taking the season game by game but I’m confident that this season we can mix it with anyone in this league. Enjoy this afternoon's game and we hope to see as many of you at Pershall Park this season as possible.

It was not until June 1907 that the Cammell Laird Institute AFC was established, with its first fixture taking place on 2nd September 1907 against Tranmere Rovers. The Club finished 9th in the West Cheshire League in their inaugural season of 1907/08. In the early years, the Club played at a number of grounds and won their first trophy, the Shipley Cup, in April 1921, before in the summer of 1922 they moved to St Peters Road (which still remains their current home) as Kirklands FC. They disbanded in 1939 but reformed in 1946. The Club had their most successful period during the 1970s and 80s, winning the West Cheshire League on a regular basis. 1994/95 saw the Club reach the FA Vase quarter-finals before losing to Arlesey Town. The early part of the new millennium saw the Club reach new heights. They started the rise through the pyramid, making history by becoming the first Club to win the championship of the Second and First Divisions of the North West Counties League, which they achieved in 2004/05 and then 2005/06. In the same year as that First Division triumph, the Club reached the FA Vase semi-finals, losing to eventual winners Nantwich Town, and two years later, the Club gained promotion to the Unibond Premier League. However, they were relegated after just one season due to ground grading. Having fought relegation battles successfully, the Club finished bottom of the Evo-Stik Division One North in 2011/12, but were reprieved, and bounced back the following season by finishing league runners up before losing on penalties in the play-off final against Trafford. Season 2013/14 saw the Club finish 11th, but the decision was taken to resign from the Evo-Stik League due to ownership issues and form a new club: Cammell Laird 1907 FC. The new Club was formed on 28th May 2014 and entered the NWCFL Division One for their debut campaign in 2014/15. In October, the Club lost manager Tony Sullivan to Witton Albion, and appointed Paul McNally in the same month. He ably guided the team to promotion, which was achieved on Saturday 4th April with a 5-0 win at Oldham Boro. In the end, Lairds finished 21 points clear of 3rd placed AFC Darwen.

7 0 9 1 d r i a L l l e m m a C 2015/16 saw the Club finish 15th in its first season in the NWCFL Premier Division. Early on, Lairds drew or even lost games that they largely dominated, but they soon found their feet in the Premier Division. Undoubtedly their best result was an emphatic 4-0 victory against eventual champions Colne in October. In February, Tony Sullivan replaced Paul McNally as manager, and Lairds eventually secured a solid mid-table finish. At the end of the season, Sullivan departed and was replaced by former Prescot Cables and AFC Darwen manager Neil Prince. The new manager made an excellent start, two fine performances seeing off the challenge of AFC Darwen in the FA Cup. Despite an opening day 4-3 defeat at New Mills, a match in which the visitors led 2-0 and 3-2, Prince’s new-look side appeared to be gelling together with a three game unbeaten run at the end of August. However, September saw a series of tough fixtures against some of the top sides in the division, and Prince resigned on good terms with the Club after a 3-1 reverse against Squires Gate. Prince was replaced by former Lairds striker Mick McGraa, who had taken over the Reserve Team in the summer. McGraa worked tirelessly to assemble a very promising young side. Although Lairds struggled in terms of results, several performances perhaps deserved better and there was an acceptance that it was going to take time for such a youthful side to develop. Lairds’ displays improved significantly after the turn of the year, and everything finally came together on Saturday 18th March 2017 as they beat AFC Darwen 4-1 to record their first league win of the season. This was followed up three days later with a 2-1 victory against in-form Hanley Town. Ultimately, results elsewhere consigned Lairds to relegation by the end of March, but with a young, talented set of players and improvements off the pitch, the Club is now in a much stronger position ahead of the Division One campaign to follow in 2017/18. Pre Season Review Pre-season has seen us play some real top-caliber opposition from higher in the pyramid as well as some challenging tests against willing Staffs County League sides. For me, Pre-season is never about results but about implicating the ideas you’ve put in place during training and in pre-match conversations. I was particularly impressed with the lads during the Hanley Town & Newcastle Town games as well as the first half against Congleton Town. We had a bit of a reality check when losing away to Wolstanton United which taught us the lesson that there are no easy games come 3 pm on a Saturday. We already look a fitter side than last year and the new additions have bought into what we are trying to do here at Eccleshall. I’m really happy with the squad we’ve assembled and the attitudes of all of our players. A big thank you to my coaching staff who have worked tirelessly over the last few weeks.

JUNIOR EAGLES CORNER As we look to 2022/23, Gareth Davies looks back at the season just gone and the new challenges to come. Season 2021/22 saw the U12s once again take on the dual challenge of playing Saturdays in the Midland Junior Premier League, alongside Sunday fixtures in the Mid Staffs Junior League. Following a slow start to the season on Saturdays, and perhaps not getting the start we would have hoped for following the Christmas break, we went on a run of 9 straight wins, propelling us up the league and also through the early rounds of the MJPL cup. Combining this run of form on Saturdays, our Sunday team managed to play out the entire season undefeated in the Premier division, running out both League and Cup winners in the Mid Staffs Junior League. As Easter approached, we made a last-minute decision to enter the UK International Cup at St Georges Park, where teams from across England, Wales and Scotland competed over 2 days.

1971

What a weekend this turned out to be, having been knocked out at the quarter final stage last season on penalties, the boys looked determined to put that right this year. After winning the group comfortably, they went on to beat some excellent sides in the knockout rounds without penalties being required this time. The accolades our players received from the tournament organisers, opposition parents and coaches and even match officials was brilliant for the team and the club. With the first trophy of the season already bagged, this gave us additional impetus going into both the Mid Staffs and Midland Junior Premier League cup finals, where we took on Eccleshall Eagles over at Eagles Park, running out 4-0 victors in the Mid Staffs Cup. As our final game of the season was then scheduled to be the Midland Junior Premier League Cup final to be played at a neutral venue, the boys were then treated to being transported to the game in the club team bus, what a great experience for them all, they even gave the Cup its own seat on the way home (and made sure it had its seatbelt on!!). With 4 trophies already won, we then entered two summer tournaments at Hatton Utd and Admaston Juniors, which although different in terms of standard of competition, the boys walked away with the trophy at both of these tournaments. As we reflect on the amazing season we have just had (winning 6 trophies), we must also look forward to the upcoming season, where we shall again be competing in the same competitions, whilst progressing onto 11 a side this season. We have some new signings that will be joining the squad this year, following the departure of Jayden Stone, who the team and club wish all the best as he starts his new journey with Shrewsbury Town FC, after signing academy terms last month. Manager Dave Hislop said: “a brilliant season was had by every single player in the squad, we now look to improve and develop as players as we move to 11 a side”.
