Dave Dale to step down as Eccleshall manager Following a conversation with club chairman, Neil Washington, Eccleshall FC are disappointed to announce that manager Dave Dale has indicated his intention to stand down from his role at the club with immediate effect for personal reasons. Whilst we regret his decision, the club has to move on, starting with today's match against Cheadle Heath Nomads. First team coach Jake Robinson will be taking charge in the interim until a replacement manager is appointed. The club is open to applications for the vacant position.

Proud members of
Eccleshall FC There has been football in the town of Eccleshall for over 100 years but very little archive material is available from those early years. However, we do know that Eccleshall Football Club was reformed in 1971 with the team being made up of locals and staff from the Eccleshall Secondary School which also provided training and playing facilities. At that time, the club was called Eccleshall Old Boys Football Club. In 1974, the team won their first trophies; the Mid-Staffs 3rd Division Cup and were also runners-up in that division, gaining promotion to Division 2. Old Boys was dropped from the club’s name and in 1979 the first team joined the Staffordshire County League (North) and a third team was formed. In 1981, with the help of grants, fund raising and a loan, a four-acre field was purchased at Pershall. Then manager, Ted Dickinson, was the driving force behind the fund raising. In the same year, the first team moved into the Premier Division of the Staffordshire County League (North). Work began converting the field into a football ground. In 1982, a building was purchased from British Telecom and, with a lot of hard work over the next couple of years on the building, car park and pitch, Pershall Park, as it was christened, was ready. In the 1983-84 season, the first team won the Staffordshire County League Premier Division Championship, the Premier Division Cup and the May Bank Cup. During the 1989-90 season, the first team won the Staffordshire Senior League title and the 1990-91 season saw the club entering the FA Vase for the first time. In 1991-92, the club reached the FA Vase 2nd round having gone through all the preliminary stages but lost at home to Wisbech Town 2-0 in front of a then record crowd of 368. The first team fared well in the league in the mid to late 90’s, finishing 3rd (97-98), 6th (98-99), 2nd (99-00) and 3rd (00-01). Eccleshall reserves won the Staffordshire County League (North) in 1999-2000 moving to the West Midlands (Regional) League Division One (North) for the start of the following season. In the 2001-2002 season, the first team won the Springbank Vending Midland League Championship.
Eccleshall FC In 2002-2003 Eccleshall’s first team joined the North West Counties Football League after securing both the Springbank Vending Midland League title and Staffordshire FA Vase. In probably the most successful season in the club’s history, our second team were also Staffordshire County League champions and our Under 18s won the Sentinel Cup. For good measure, our Under 16s won the Staffordshire FA County Cup, the Mid-Staffordshire League Cup and the Sentinel Shield. Regarding the Sentinel competitions, the last time a club had won both trophies in the same season had been some twenty five years previously – a great achievement. The 2012-13 season marked the completion of 10 years in the North West Counties League and saw the club achieve its highest ever placing of sixth in Division 1. In 2017-18, our Under 17s had a very successful season, winning the Potteries Junior Youth League Cup, Staffordshire FA Youth Cup and finishing runners up in the league. Over the years since 1981-82, significant work has been undertaken to develop both the ground and the facilities to the required standard of the National League Pyramid which the club now enjoys. This includes enclosing the ground, the installation of floodlights, building a covered seated stand and pitch levelling. In 2019, a new toilet block was installed and previously the clubhouse was refurbished and upgraded with the addition of a treatment room and a security system. Prior to the 2018/19 season, a new kitchen and refreshments bar was added. For the 2021-22 season the team dugouts have been replaced and more spectator improvements made. Further developments to the ground are planned for the future. All of this has been achieved by a strong committee management team behind the scenes, a number of which have given many years of service to Eccleshall FC together with the addition of new members who are helping to take the club forward. The club has now added a number of junior teams as we look to develop a junior section. Our second pitch has been upgraded and improved to accommodate this. 2021 sees Eccleshall Football Club celebrate its 50th anniversary and, as can be seen from the above, much has been achieved over that time. We look forward to seeing what the future brings. We consider ourselves a friendly club and look forward to welcoming you to Pershall Park in the future and hope you will enjoy the facilities and the football.

Welcome to Cheadle heath nomads Cheadle Heath Nomads was formed in 1919, immediately after the First World War The club is, therefore approaching its centenary. A photograph of the team around that time shows a bizarre combination of ages was necessary to get a team together and for obvious reasons. With the war over a group of individuals (Messrs. Sanderson, Bentley, Hopwood, Hulme, Johnson, Taylor and Nuttall) began a fund raising project to raise £1000 (some money in those days) to buy the piece of land 'on the other side of the bridge' in Cheadle (as opposed to Cheadle Heath!) to create a sports club for the area and in 1921 the club opened with Cheadle Heath Nomads at its core, although it also provided facilities for Cricket, Tennis and Ladies' Hockey. The gentlemen named above became the first Trustees of the club and the club remains a Trusteeship, owning its own land with all the pros and cons that entails. Nomads joined the Lancashire and Cheshire AFL and, after a brief break in 1927 stayed in the L&C until 1994. The club struggled for money in the 1930's and even changed its club colours from green and yellow quarters to white. Every player had to bring his own white shirt! The colours changed again to claret and blue after the 2ndWorld War and they remain the club's colours today. The club thrived immediately after the 2ndWorld War with some improvements in infrastructure with the erection of a Nissan hut with a bar etc. and the teams became hugely successful, especially in the early 1950's. Players at that time such as Doug Berry, Johnny Whittaker, Bob Stuart etc. became the backbone of the club for several years after they had finished playing! Nomads had often contemplated moving into the Mid Cheshire League (now The Cheshire League) but had been constrained by the presence of cricket with a corner of the football pitch forming part of the cricket outfield. With the demise of the cricket section (tennis and hockey had finished already) and success on the field a step up into the Mid Cheshire League was the obvious way to go.
Welcome to Cheadle heath nomads The hard-working committee, based around Roy Welsh and Jim Hardie had been strengthened by the Gibbons family (George, Dave and John) and the club moved forward with confidence. Winning the 2nd. Division in its first season, Nomads consolidated in the First Division until 2004 when it merged with Linotype F C. Linotype were in the same league (now The Cheshire League) but were having problems retaining the facilities at The Silver Wings Club in Timperley. At the same time Nomads were struggling both on and off the field (Roy Welsh and George Gibbons holding the fort) and a merger of the two organisations made sense, especially as the committee would incorporate two grafters in Brian McGuinness and Jim Calderbank. Cheadle Heath Nomads became Linotype Cheadle Heath Nomads. There then followed a generally satisfactory playing record until the Cheshire Football League championship was won in season 2013-14. Nomads has remained in the top echelons of the league since (coming 2nd, 5th. and 4th.) Over the same period there were significant improvements to the playing surface and the facilities with the addition of new changing rooms, the erection of a 50 seater stand and a significant spend on improving the drainage, all with a view to moving into the NWCFL for season 2019/20 The re-structuring of the NWCFL for season 2018/19, however, provided an opportunity too good to miss whilst at the same time providing a significant challenge for a group of individuals to do two years work in one. George Gibbons (the same one), Steve Jenkins, Ian Taylor and Paul Farmer have put in a mountain of work and with Roy Welsh (the same one) steering the ship, especially financially, the club's facilities will soon include floodlights (by the start of the season), hard standing and new barriers, standing accommodation, spectator toilets etc. - and with more improvements to come. It also provided an opportune time for the club to change its name back to the original Cheadle Heath Nomads F.C. in time for its centenary next year.

MATCH REPORT First team coaches Jake Robinson and John Hamnett were again in charge in manager Dave Dale’s absence for the local derby against Stafford Town. Luke Lewis returned to the starting line up and Liam Robinson, a signing previously unavailable, was on the bench. In front of a healthy Bank Holiday Monday crowd, play was pretty even in the first ten minutes of the game. However, the Eagles were given a scare on 14 minutes when a poor mistake by Jake Langdridge, who was too casual on the ball, left Josh Oultram clear and keeper Zak Noble made a decent block to prevent a goal. Then an effort by Josh Wilson was collected by Noble. On 26 minutes, Town took the lead when Kyle Ashman received the ball in the box and flicked it over Eagles’ skipper Harvey Collins before stabbing the ball into the net despite the best efforts of George Woodroffe to stop it crossing the line. As Eccleshall looked to pull the goal back, a cross by Callum Feeney was just too far in front of Lewis and Joel Mills and Town keeper Joe Morris collected. Town again went close when a free kick by Wilson was just over the bar. In spite of their best efforts, the ball did not seem to be running for Eagles as half time approached. HT: Eccleshall 0 Stafford Town 1 Eccleshall showed their intent when Langdridge headed back from a corner and Liam Tomlin volleyed over the bar. They were battling back and Kyle Goodwin just failed to connect with a through ball into the area. Stafford almost went two up when a shot hit the post before being scrambled away by the Eagles defence. Lewis then went on a decent run but his cross was collected by Morris. Town’s Ben Douglas fired in a shot from distance which was just over the bar. Another Oultram effort had the same fate. Eagles brought on Liam Robinson up front and Lewis’s runs down the flank were posing problems for the Town defence. Eccleshall had a good chance when a Feeney free kick into the area was met on the volley by Mills but it was just over the bar. Jordan Hall was brought on and Langdridge’s pass almost found Robinson with the Town defence hacking the ball clear. On 87 minutes, Lewis raced clear before cutting into the box and his low shot beat Morris but came back off the post before being cleared. Then Robinson fired wide as Eagles were hunting the equaliser. FT: Eccleshall 0 Stafford Town 1 Eagles woeful league form continues, having now picked up three points from twenty four. Subsequent results have now left them next to bottom. They face the same opponents in a couple of weeks in the FA Vase. For now, they face Cheadle Heath Nomads at Pershall Park on Saturday before travelling to bottom of the table St Martins next Tuesday, which now becomes a game of added significance.
TOUCHLINES
WITH
Geoff Banwell
Well, football in the South West has been a revelation since we moved here 6 months ago and today I have watched Cullompton Town FC. The sort of name which conjures up a children’s TV programme rather than a football team but, with my next visit to watch Ottery St Mary thirds v Budleigh Salterton seconds, life is very exciting. They don’t have official Linesmen-sorry linespersons and invariably I am asked to help out but explain I have no idea of the rules. Got caught out at Beer Albion v Lyme Regis when the manager, secretary, kit man, Bill Grinham sort of chap, waved the flag frantically when the opposition were attacking.’ He can’t be offside’, I explained, ’He’s in his own half. ’You told me you didn’t know the rules’ he retorted. One team of foreign students from Exeter University had a pre match warm up routine where they put a Ghetto Blaster on the penalty spot and all started gyrating to the music but the best experience was at Beer Albion FC with the best view on earth of any ground anywhere overlooking the dramatic Jurassic coastline. Standard of the Devon and Exeter league is below that of the North West Counties but the facilities are excellent. Seaton Town have gone down two divisions this season but I know not why. Axmouth, with a population of around 400, have a superb set up thanks to a local wealthy football loving benefactor and my local side Colyton have a lovely set up thanks to the generosity of the East Devon Council. However, with the rivers Coly and Axe not far away, it often gets flooded.
Beer charge £2 entry which includes a match programme and a free raffle. So, missing Eccleshall FC, but football in the wilds of Devon/Dorset has its own compensations. Axminster, Honiton and Sidmouth play at a level similar to Eccy in the South West Peninsula League where they have things like real lines persons and floodlights. I hope to include a photo of the ground at Beer and the goalie might remind you of a young Sid Kelly!!! Enjoy the game today and be nice to the officials or you may have to run the line!!!
