Talk of The Town Good afternoon everyone and welcome to our game down here at the Red Industries Stadium. Today we welcome Runcorn Linnets who have made the short trip from Cheshire to be with us and no doubt they will have a large following with them. We hope that they all enjoy their visit to us and have a safe journey home. It promises to be an exciting game as both Clubs are chasing the points for different reasons. All our games in the past have been very entertaining as both clubs play football and today promises to be no different. Our young side battled hard last week at Clitheroe in front of a crowd of over 600. With six players missing at the start, it was made more difficult by losing two others but with an average age of just over 20 the lads gave a good account of themselves with Thomas Hinton and Oliver Torjussen making their debuts and could have come back with a point with a bit of luck. We are away next Saturday to the City Of Liverpool who play at Vauxhall Motors ground. The kick-off is at 3:00pm as both Clubs found it difficult to work around a change in the kick-off time that the League were allowing because of the FA Cup semi-final. On Monday (18th) we have another important game when we take on Market Drayton Town down here KO 3.00 looking for three more valuable points. Hope you enjoy the game and a safe journey home.
View from the Dugout Today we welcome Runcorn Linnets FC in another massive league game with important points at stake for both clubs. Runcorn, currently in the playoff positions have a good footballing pedigree as we have experienced in the last few seasons they have good quality with the ball, are hardworking, and well organised hence the reason they are competing at the top end of the table. The last month or so we have gone through the worst time regarding injuries and illness in my many years at the club which resulted in fielding a team with an average age of just 20 last Saturday away at Clitheroe. It was a credible performance from the lads who stayed in the game until the end and had good performances from a couple of our 18 year old debutants which was a real positive moving forward. This week has all been about recovery, looking at getting some of our walking wounded back in the mix for a starting place against Runcorn. The spirit has been great within the group and our belief in pulling together some results to get out of the mess we are in is not in question. We will be approaching the game positively to get the 3 points and this is no different from any other game we have played this season. We need to make the big moments count and create our own luck in these last few games of the season as these have gone against us in the main this season. We are definitely not feeling sorry for ourselves, we will roll our sleeves up and face the challenge head on. Let’s get behind the lads this afternoon and enjoy the game.

RUNCORN LINNETS Runcorn Linnets : The story so far....
Runcorn Linnets are determined to make up for lost time with Calum McIntyre's senior men's side certainly hoping that 2021-22 runs its course after two successive Covid-curtailed seasons. The young manager is now in his second year in charge and looking to build on a promising platform laid over the six months of action, which were possible in 20-21 – before the pandemic again called a premature halt to proceedings, in this instance at the turn of the year. With a blend of proven non-league experience and youthful exuberance, Calum has nurtured an excellent playing environment with his coaching skills, man management and meticulous attention to detail. Runcorn were on the fringes of the play-off positions in the Northern Premier League North West Division when they unwittingly signed off with a victory at Prescot Cables on Boxing Day 2020. Calum at 27 years old, is one of the youngest managers in the football pyramid and also one of its brightest prospects as a UEFA B licensed coach. On appointment, Calum quickly named former Norwich City and Aberdeen defender, Colin Woodthorpe as his Runcorn assistant. Colin had successfully held the same managerial positions at both Colwyn Bay and AFC Fylde. Also head of Academy at our fellow fans club Chester FC , Calum is fiercely ambitious to make a success of his maiden managerial role at senior level. He has retained the majority of players from the 20-21 squad while recruiting early in summer 2021 to ensure that areas identified for improvement were promptly addressed and the team was fully prepared for an important preseason after the enforced, extended lay-off. A key element in the management and coaching strategy and playing style is the club's state-of-the-art pitch, which presents Linnets with an outstanding surface. It was installed in summer of 2020, Linnets having been chosen to take part in the second phase of Sport England's hybrid carpet pilot programme. The project, also in conjunction with the Football Foundation, Premier League, The Football Association and Cheshire FA, involved the laying of the durable international-standard pitch, comprising 95% natural grass, growing through and intertwined with the grass fibre carpet. Its unveiling was the culmination of two years of hard work. The pitch benefits all sections of the club – being used for matches by the first team, Development and Academy teams plus the Linnets Ladies (playing in the North West League) while Akidemy and junior players, managers and coaches can use it for training. The pitch is also available for hire by community clubs and organisations. The other major happenings in the 2020 close season involved the departures of Linnets' longserving management team of boss Michael Ellison and assistant Matt Cross plus the retirement through injury of influential player and club captain, Kyle Hamid. Only Matt Atherton (313) has mad more appearances than Kyle's 261* with Michael Ellison, Mark Houghton and Rob Whyte the only other double century makers. Ello and Crossy had been in charge since summer 2016 after both playing for the club and are assured of legendary status at Linnets on account of their on-field service and managerial achievement in bringing the club its first championship success. They had also overseen Runcorn's first two seasons in the NPL after promotion as North West Counties League Premier Division title winners of 2017-18 - Linnets putting the disappointment of multiple near misses firmly behind them.
After three runners-up finishes in the previous four seasons, promotion as a top two finisher was finally clinched on April 28th 2018 on the 12th anniversary of the club's foundation. The title was duly secured on May 3rd 2018 with a 5-0 home victory over Blackpool outfit, Squires Gate. This longawaited league crown was captured with two matches to spare and 100 points – a club record 122 league goals being scored over the 44 games with 36 conceded. A crowd of 890 saw the title trophy being lifted by jubilant club captain, Kyle Hamid on the final day of the season. A subsequent attendance of 962 for the Buildbase FA Trophy visit of FC United of Manchester on November 23rd 2019 was going into the 2021-22 season the highest for a competitive Runcorn fixture at The Linnets Stadium, which turned 10 years old in July 2020.** The club enjoyed a very creditable introduction to Northern Premier League life in 2018-19 as members of its West Division. This is the only NPL season which Linnets have hitherto been able to complete due to coronavirus, eventually missing out on a play-off spot on goals difference. After further reorganisation of the league structure, seeing the creation of a third NPL division at Step 4 for 2021-22, Linnets now revert to being members of the West Division with the North West Division being abolished. Linnets have come a long way since being founded in 2006 by supporters of former national nonleague champions, Runcorn AFC after a traumatic end for the old club. The initial aims had been to bring the successor Linnets back to Runcorn and establish the club as one of which the community could be proud. Both these ambitions were achieved with the club still in its infancy. The stadium in the Murdishaw area of Runcorn, opened in 2010 with the project having been supported by Halton Borough Council, the FA and Football Foundation as well as the club and its fans. Winter 2017 saw the completion of a replacement £1.4 million clubhouse as part of wider redevelopment of surrounding land with retail and leisure facilities. At the same time, pitches outside the stadium were fenced in for use by the Linnets' numerous junior teams with the club also signing a new long-term lease for the extended site with Halton Council. Runcorn Linnets Football Club was born after Runcorn AFC had intimated it would not be in a position to field a team beyond the end of 2005-06 season. Upon leaving town in 2001, the now defunct club had suffered a troubled and nomadic existence. Fans met at their spiritual home of Canal Street – in the then Quayside Bar and Function Rooms, next to the Linnets Park housing estate on which Runcorn AFC's ground had once stood. An existing Supporters Trust was remodelled to run Runcorn Linnets, whose identity was derived from Runcorn AFC's nickname. The new club spent its first four years playing home games as tenants of Witton Albion FC at Wincham Park, Northwich - gaining promotion at the first attempt to the top division of the North West Counties League under the management of Steve Carragher, who had been the predecessor club's last team boss. Victory against Formby in the NWCL Challenge Cup final in 2012-13 brought a first winners' trophy for the first team. Former Runcorn AFC player, Joey Dunn was the then manager. Paul McNally is another "old boy" of the original club to have managed the new with Steve Wilkes being the only manager prior to the present incumbent not to have had any previous Linnets connections. Wilkes had in 2009 led the Linnets to their first ever final, only to be beaten to the League Cup by New Mills at Tameside Stadium, which would be the scene for the club's triumph in the same competition four years later. The abandoned 2019-20 season saw Linnets make their debut in the NPL Academy as they looked to expand on firm foundations. The 20-21 cohort went on to reach the ESPFA National finals as winners of the Northern section.
Linnets' recently-formed U21s team, which was to be renamed the Development team in summer 2021, also flourished from the outset. The end of its first season saw one of the star players, Eden Gumbs earn promotion to the first team squad for 2021-22 with the hope that many more will follow his example. *Includes matches played in the null and void 2019-20 season. **Since this article was published, the club attendance record has been broken. On Saturday, October 30th 2021, an FA Trophy return visit of FCUM attracted a crowd of 1,078 to what is now the APEC Taxis Stadium, surpassing the 1,037 who were present for our inaugural game at the ground, a pre-season friendly against Witton Albion in 2010. The NPL West visit of Workington AFC on Saturday, January 29th 2022 brought another landmark attendance. The crowd of 963 was a new highest home league crowd for Runcorn Linnets.

This week our media man Shaun Rogers caught up with Owen Mooney who was with us this season from August to January on loan from Wigan, to get his views on his time with us and how he has done since returning back off loan and goign to today's visitors.
Owen, appreciate your time, lets get started with when you were told by Wigan that you were going out on a work experience loan back in August what were your initial thoughts? I was filled with a lot of emotions, to be honest including plenty of excitement and plenty of anxiousness. This was my first loan so I was very unsure what to expect but no real nerves I was super excited but also wasn’t sure what to expect. Me my mum dad brother and agent all wanted a loan as we knew how good it would be for me and how much it would develop my game and castle just made it the best first loan experience I honestly think I could’ve had Walking into your first session with Castle and meeting all the lads for the first time what was that experience like, with us having a young squad base did this make it easier do you think to get involved in the groups early on? My first session was a lot different than what I was used to if I’m honest. There was a sense of a real working environment and honesty around the place if that makes any sense. It felt as though everyone had a job to do within the squad and we were there to get it done I loved that. Straight from the off I had a real laugh with the lads in training but was made aware we’re training hard here as results Saturday mean something. The lads were so welcoming and understood my banter well I thought because we are all young lads playing football have so much in common. Well, I think they understood my banter but may have just laughed to keep me happy. Every player made it easy for me to talk to them and I’m honestly not just saying that I mean it. I have 100% made friends for life on this team especially one player Nat who is an outstanding player and an even better lad.
yeah we have missed Nat over the last few weeks thats for sure, so first game and baptism of fire i guess with it been the FA Cup, sadly we lost the game in the depth but what are your memories of the game This is one of my most memorable games for the castle believe it or not. This was because it was my first time playing for a proper men's team and dealing with different things such as kicking off at 3:00 pm traveling to the game in my own car and listening to a different style of team talk by the manager. All felt so different to me. I remember about 10 minutes into the game I had a back pass from Askey I think it was and I’ve took my touch looked up and before I could even look for my pass a player was on me like a flash. The pace of the game really took me by surprise and from then on in the rest of the game I realised my decision before I get this ball needs to be made quick and efficiently. I found the pace of the game and the fight to win different but was a huge eye opener for me
It took us a couple of games to settle but you got your first clean sheet away to Glossop in a 2-0 victory, for any keeper a clean sheet is a massive reward for not just your hard work but the squad what was the feeling like getting that blank on the board. I was incredibly happy with the team myself and the squad as a whole that day. There again I learned so much about men's football and how it can improve my game massively. On corners, I was getting pinned by about 2 or 3 of their players and had to try and get through them to deal with the cross. Jake the GK coach helped me with this in training and I was able to put it into practice thanks to him. We played a solid Glossip team that day and to come out with a clean sheet and 3 points were incredible for me as an individual as I had a lot of obstacles to try and come through that day I felt I grew in confidence. I didn’t have a load of saves to make that game thanks to my team who were in class again but it was a huge learning curve and I remember the celebrations after the game and in the clubhouse afterwards, I knew them 3 points and clean sheet meant something. I have to mention the Bootle game to you, 2 down at the break, looking out the game and second half it was a different side completely, you pulled off a few top draw saves to keep us in the game, Nat with a hat trick what happened at half time? Well, that’s exactly what Nat does. He pulls bits of magic out of the bag from nowhere. He’s a top player! And that’s what top players do. Honestly, I could write about how motivational we all were at halftime and come up with a magical story but it was so much like that. We got a bit of grief from the coaching staff in the right way. But soon as we came back in the changes it was quite quiet and I remember thinking we need to do something here and I sort of knew I wouldn’t get beat second half cos we needed something and I wanted this win. And Nat pulled a blinder for us and the lads put in a massive shift was a fantastic game to be a part of and always look back to it with a smile on my face from a personal perspective
A few weeks later we travel down to Kempston Rovers in the Trophy and we go to the dreaded penalty shoot out, and a voice told me you loves a penalty shootout and you showed it that day by helping us advance thanks to a win on penalties, what was that like for you been involved in that? Was a great game to be involved in. Everyone loves playing in a cup competition so to be involved in it first was incredible for me and the squad. When it goes to pens I have my routine to save as many as I can and it worked for me on the day so I was pleased with myself from that perspective but for the club and the lads were great for the team morale. We enjoyed that win and celebrated it well but we were ready for the next upcoming league game and wanted to keep that winning streak going.
You enjoyed your time with us but all good things must come to an end sadly, so moving on to Runcorn now have have you found your time with them? First of all, I would like to thank a few people at Newcastle Town. Rob the manager for giving me an opportunity at the start of the season. I really appreciate the trust he put into me as I am a young goalkeeper coming into men's football. I would also like to thank Shaun the media guy. An absolute legend of a bloke. He was fantastic with my mum dad brother and Nan when at the games. He would always make me laugh and I have missed him loads. He would also make sure I got all the footage from games to help me improve my game. Jake the goalkeeper coach for helping me out throughout my time there on the pitch and off the pitch. He put a lot of effort into me in training and often went through footage with me. The players were all brilliant with me and I can only thank them for that. My time at Runcorn so far has been great I have loved going in training with them throughout the week and looked forward to playing games with them. They are a great bunch of lads and make me feel so comfortable around them. We have a great coaching team at Runcorn and I have seen the benefits of this already helping out my game massively
What is the biggest thing you will take away from this season playing in the NPL The biggest thing I will take from playing NPL this season is my game understanding. The best decisions to make during games and the physicality side of the game. Dominating my box with confidence. I feel I have grown stronger in many different ways throughout my experience. I have had so much fun with all the supporters throughout this season. Getting praise from them and getting abused by them has only made my experience one hundred times better and has helped me grow on the pitch also. And final question did you add any songs to what I'm calling one of the worst playlists I have ever heard that comes from our dressing room and if you did what was your song. I didn’t add to any of the playlists in the changes. All the players knew I loved my 70s and 80s songs so if I got hold of that playlist it would be full of ABBA, Bananarama and Duran Duran so I think they kept that away from me purposely. Probably best because when I start singing my moves come out with it, and no one wants to see my moves trust me!
I would like to thank Owen for his time this week in chatting to me and i think i speak for everyone here at the club when we wish him the very best for his future, but possibly not the best between 3 and 5 this afternoon.
