VIEW FROM THE DUGOUT Good afternoon and welcome to today’s final league game of the season. I’d also like to welcome all players, management staff, committee members, and supporters of Sandbach United, and in particular goalkeeper Eric Merner whom you may remember played a huge part in our turnaround through the winter months. Since last writing my notes our league safety has been confirmed. Although we didn’t perform to the standards we’ve set in our last home game against New Mills, we picked up 3 points on our travels to Cammell Laird last weekend. A real hardworking and battling performance at a club that’s never easy to go to and get a result. With the results of the teams around us also going our way, the gap between ourselves and the bottom three is now 9 points (this could be extended to 12 today). To be 9 points adrift at Christmas and turn our season around the way we have is a massive credit to the players and the work they have put in. We are within touching distance of a mid-table finish which seemed impossible at one point. They have dug in at times and taken points off good sides and to only have lost games against the top 4 sides in the league since Christmas shows we shouldn’t be where we are. It’s nice to finish the season today with no pressure but I can reassure you the lads will be wanting to finish on a high. We also have a cup competition and we’d love to have a run-in that, with a tasty tie away at Congleton awaiting if we can overcome Stafford Town on Tuesday. Once again I can’t express my pride in this playing squad. They’ve stuck to every task we’ve given them, never shirked away from the challenge, and put in the hard work on and off the pitch. It’s important we now regroup in pre-season and make sure we have no repeats of the beginning of this season. I do believe the only way is up now for this football club. Thank you for your continued support throughout the season.
Liam Kelly
Eccleshall FC There has been football in the town of Eccleshall for over 100 years but very little archive material is available from those early years. However, we do know that Eccleshall Football Club was reformed in 1971 with the team being made up of locals and staff from the Eccleshall Secondary School which also provided training and playing facilities. At that time, the club was called Eccleshall Old Boys Football Club. In 1974, the team won their first trophies; the Mid-Staffs 3rd Division Cup and were also runners-up in that division, gaining promotion to Division 2. Old Boys was dropped from the club’s name and in 1979 the first team joined the Staffordshire County League (North) and a third team was formed. In 1981, with the help of grants, fund raising and a loan, a four-acre field was purchased at Pershall. Then manager, Ted Dickinson, was the driving force behind the fund raising. In the same year, the first team moved into the Premier Division of the Staffordshire County League (North). Work began converting the field into a football ground. In 1982, a building was purchased from British Telecom and, with a lot of hard work over the next couple of years on the building, car park and pitch, Pershall Park, as it was christened, was ready. In the 1983-84 season, the first team won the Staffordshire County League Premier Division Championship, the Premier Division Cup and the May Bank Cup. During the 1989-90 season, the first team won the Staffordshire Senior League title and the 1990-91 season saw the club entering the FA Vase for the first time. In 1991-92, the club reached the FA Vase 2nd round having gone through all the preliminary stages but lost at home to Wisbech Town 2-0 in front of a then record crowd of 368. The first team fared well in the league in the mid to late 90’s, finishing 3rd (97-98), 6th (98-99), 2nd (99-00) and 3rd (00-01). Eccleshall reserves won the Staffordshire County League (North) in 1999-2000 moving to the West Midlands (Regional) League Division One (North) for the start of the following season. In the 2001-2002 season, the first team won the Springbank Vending Midland League Championship.
Eccleshall FC In 2002-2003 Eccleshall’s first team joined the North West Counties Football League after securing both the Springbank Vending Midland League title and Staffordshire FA Vase. In probably the most successful season in the club’s history, our second team were also Staffordshire County League champions and our Under 18s won the Sentinel Cup. For good measure, our Under 16s won the Staffordshire FA County Cup, the Mid-Staffordshire League Cup and the Sentinel Shield. Regarding the Sentinel competitions, the last time a club had won both trophies in the same season had been some twenty five years previously – a great achievement. The 2012-13 season marked the completion of 10 years in the North West Counties League and saw the club achieve its highest ever placing of sixth in Division 1. In 2017-18, our Under 17s had a very successful season, winning the Potteries Junior Youth League Cup, Staffordshire FA Youth Cup and finishing runners up in the league. Over the years since 1981-82, significant work has been undertaken to develop both the ground and the facilities to the required standard of the National League Pyramid which the club now enjoys. This includes enclosing the ground, the installation of floodlights, building a covered seated stand and pitch levelling. In 2019, a new toilet block was installed and previously the clubhouse was refurbished and upgraded with the addition of a treatment room and a security system. Prior to the 2018/19 season, a new kitchen and refreshments bar was added. For the 2021-22 season the team dugouts have been replaced and more spectator improvements made. Further developments to the ground are planned for the future. All of this has been achieved by a strong committee management team behind the scenes, a number of which have given many years of service to Eccleshall FC together with the addition of new members who are helping to take the club forward. The club has now added a number of junior teams as we look to develop a junior section. Our second pitch has been upgraded and improved to accommodate this. 2021 sees Eccleshall Football Club celebrate its 50th anniversary and, as can be seen from the above, much has been achieved over that time. We look forward to seeing what the future brings. We consider ourselves a friendly club and look forward to welcoming you to Pershall Park in the future and hope you will enjoy the facilities and the football.

AS THE 2021/22 SEASON COMES TO AN END………….. With our last home league match against Sandbach United this afternoon, it brings to an end what has been a topsy turvey 2021/22 season. We got under way back in August last year with such high hopes after a disrupted couple of years due to the pandemic. Dave Dale had put together a team which we hoped would be challenging at the right end of the table, but it became clear very quickly that these hopes were going to be wide of the mark. By the beginning of September, Dave had left, and coach Jake Robinson stepped into the breach on an interim basis. A low spot came when, for the first time since becoming eligible for entry, the club was forced to withdraw from the FA Vase in early September due to our inability to field a side appropriate for the competition. The usual process of seeking a new management team commenced, with Liam Kelly (manager) and Nathan Wilkes (assistant) being appointed, their first match a tough test away at New Mills on 18. September. Perhaps an early high spot for them was the midweek match against Wythenshawe Amateurs when, after being 3-0 down after 15 minutes, we miraculously pulled the game around, winning 6-4. Ammies secretary John Cotton phoned me the following day to check if it had really happened, he was so stunned by the result! Liam and Nathan set about rebuilding the squad and four consecutive defeats brought us back to earth. They kept me busy with a raft of seven-day notices for players from then on as players were shipped out and new ones brought in as they searched for the right blend. Another high spot was our victory against Port Vale in the Staffordshire Senior Cup in mid-November when new keeper Eric Merner (who may be facing us today) and brought in to cover the injured Aaron Woolrich, hit the headlines by saving all five penalties in a shoot-out which took us through to meet Stoke City in the next round at Pershall Park. As you would expect, with a squad being slowly rebuilt, league results were hit and miss and alarm bells were ringing as we were in the relegation spots in the division. Perhaps a real turning point was when we travelled to Cheadle Heath Nomads before Christmas, coming away with a 3-2 victory. The new year brought new hope and the newly blended team now started to put some decent results together, picking up thirteen points in January / February and we were now going toe-to-toe with promotion candidates. An injury to young keeper Morgan Chilton on the Isle of Man (Liam Robinson having to go in goal) probably prevented us sneaking a point there. We have continued with good performances in the main and, going into today’s match, sit nine points clear of the drop zone and safe from relegation. Liam and Nathan, together with their backroom team of Phil Bruce, Harry Pickering and Evans Ofori deserve great credit in pulling our season around. We can look forward to 2022/23 with greater optimism and, hopefully, the new players brought in together with some of our longer standing ones, will remain at Pershall Park and accept the challenge of taking the club forward.
AS THE 2021/22 SEASON COMES TO AN END………….. As always, the club will not be standing still behind the scenes either. Aside from the usual necessary pre-season maintenance at the ground, new projects are looking to be taken forward. We are in the process of purchasing new seats to replace the existing ones at the ground for the new season. Hopefully, work will begin in the not-too-distant future to construct a new junior pitch behind the stand and things are now moving forward towards the construction of the memorial Jake Standbridge 50-seater stand as well. We are also looking at funding streams to install new LED lighting units for our floodlights. After the season we have just had, things are looking a lot brighter for the future of Eccleshall Football Club. Whilst already acknowledging the contribution of our NWCL management team and the players, it would be remiss not to recognise the many others involved in the club who have played their part this season. I apologise in advance for not mentioning individual names but feel sure with my memory that I would forget someone, and I would not want to cause any offence or embarrassment to anyone. Grateful thanks to our kit sponsors, ground and programme advertisers and minibus sponsor without whose support we would have struggled. I believe all are featured in one way or another in our programme or on the website – your contributions as always are greatly appreciated, and it is hoped that you will continue to support the club in the future. To our club officers and committee members who have guided the club through a problematic season and have seen us come through successfully. Our willing band of volunteers who play their part on match days to ensure that everything runs smoothly behind the bar, in the refreshment bar, on the gate, running the raffle, finding the missing match balls, cleaning up after the game etc. etc.etc. To everyone involved in ongoing maintenance at the ground, tackling jobs which often go unnoticed but are critical to the club. Our media officer for the upkeep of the club website and matchday online programme. To our groundsman who provides us with one of the best playing surfaces in the league. To everyone involved in the junior section of the club – hopefully, you have enjoyed your season and are looking forward to the next one. To our supporters who have turned up in increasing numbers over the season. Hopefully the teams have provided some high spots for you to remember as we move into the close season. Thanks to all the above for their involvement, contribution and general support of our club. We would not exist without it, and it makes Eccleshall Football Club what it is. See you all at the end of July. Jim Tunney. 1971

Sandbach United FC Sandbach United Football Club was established in 2004 when Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers joined forces in their quest to improve the football facilities in Sandbach. Hence the R & A on the club badge.; In January 2004, the membership of Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers voted in favour of amalgamation, with the aim of playing as a single club from the start of the 2004/5 season.; Sandbach Albion was formerly known as Hays Junior Football Club and was founded in 1994, playing on the pitches of what was then Albion Chemicals.; As health and safety issues became more prevalent in the 90's they left that site and for 5 years the Senior home ground was at Sandbach cricket club.; The younger sides played their games at junior schools throughout Sandbach. Sandbach Ramblers Youth Football Club was formed in 1995 to provide access to schoolboy football for the youth of Sandbach.; Of course there had been a Ramblers team in the town before, Sandbach Ramblers were initially formed over 100 years ago, playing in the Cheshire County League and winning the Cheshire FA Senior Cup in 1914, before folding in 1975 reforming in 1979 and disbanding in the late 1980s.
In 2006 Sandbach United formed the adult team, which initially competed in the Crewe and District League before moving to the Staffordshire Senior League First Division and then being promoted to the Premier Division for the 2008/9 season. In 2011, the club was awarded grants by the Football Foundation and the local council of over £2 million to build a 3G pitch and 9 grass pitches, together with changing rooms and an education facility. The Sandbach Community Football Centre was opened early in the 2011/12 season.; United switched to the Cheshire League in 2011 and won promotion to the Premier Division for the 2013/14 season before moving to The North West Counties Division one league for the 2016/17 season. The clubs first season in the NWCFL D1 League was better than they could have dreamt, winning the Macron Club of the Month in December, finishing in 6th place and the playoffs in Division 1 as well as being Reusch First Division Challenge Cup Runners up. Their goal keeper, Ryan Moss also collected two Reusch Keeper of the Month awards. In another first for the club, the 2017/18 season saw the club enter The FA Vase with a home 2nd Qualifying Round fixture against AFC Emley. The 2018/19 season provided the club with its first trophy since joining The North West Counties Football League as they defeated Avro FC 4–2 to lift The First Division Challenge Cup.[7] The club also made their debut in the FA Cup, joining the competition in the extra preliminary round, but got knocked out by Parkgate in this round.[3]
The 2019/20 season was very different indeed, Sandbach United were unable to replicate the high league position for most of the season and struggled with many player changes which disrupted the team. However they did continue to impress in the challenge cup as holders it gave the team hope of some success. Sadly the season was curtailed and declared null and void due to COVID 19, this ironically was to be a blessing a it gave the team chance to regroup and when the league decided to play out the remaining rounds of the cup in September 2020 Sandbach took the chance and went on to retain the cup in an exciting game against AFC Liverpool. The game finished 2-2 with Sandbach coming from behind twice, the cup was ultimately decided on penalties with Sandbach the victors with a 4-3 shootout score. A further piece of luck sees Sandbach get another shot at promotion after the null and void season meant it was 4 to be promoted again in the 2020/21 season. The 2020/21 season was once again badly affected by the COVID 19 pandemic and was curtailed with Sandbach holding one of the promotion places. However a change in how the FA decided to calculate the PPG meant that we missed out again on promotion.
The club has over 600 players and 40+ teams that operate from its Hind Heath Road base. United have teams playing in the Mid -Cheshire Youth League and the Cheshire Girls League among others and the age range covers adults and veterans teams right down to Soccer School for Reception and Year 1 children.
