VIEW FROM THE DUGOUT Good afternoon and welcome to a huge game against Alsager Town. I hope everyone associated with Eccleshall Football Club had a great Christmas, and I wish you all a happy new year. Today’s game is one of great importance as Alsager find themselves at the wrong end of the table in a relegation battle with us. We were excellent in the reverse fixture and we will again be hoping to take a much needed 3 points. Since my last programme notes a lot has happened on and off the pitch. A well earned point against a much improved Rocester side (a game I thought that we deserved to win), was followed by our worst performance of the season away at Brocton. The lads really let myself and the rest of the management staff down that day which led to us calling a team meeting, as well as signing in a few fresh faces. A behind closed doors friendly victory against Stone Dominoes allowed us to work on a few things as well as introduce our new signings. Our next outing was away at the in form Cheadle Heath Nomads and we came away with a much needed 3 points. This was arguably our best performance of the season with every member of the playing squad we took to Cheadle that day playing their part in a huge win. Some exciting news off the pitch is that we have been drawn at home to Stoke City FC in the Staffs Senior Cup quarter final. This will be another great occasion for our club and I would imagine a bumper crowd will be down at Pershall Park to support us. I believe the game is scheduled to be played Tuesday 1st February. We have a huge run of games coming up now and it will be great to see as many of you as possible come and get behind the team. We are continuing to do everything we can behind the scenes to ensure that this club remains in the division. Thank you for your continued support.

Liam Kelly

TUESDAY 1ST FEBRUARY 2022 KICKOFF : 7:45 PM STAFFORDSHIRE SENIOR CUP QUARTER FINAL

Eccleshall FC There has been football in the town of Eccleshall for over 100 years but very little archive material is available from those early years. However, we do know that Eccleshall Football Club was reformed in 1971 with the team being made up of locals and staff from the Eccleshall Secondary School which also provided training and playing facilities. At that time, the club was called Eccleshall Old Boys Football Club. In 1974, the team won their first trophies; the Mid-Staffs 3rd Division Cup and were also runners-up in that division, gaining promotion to Division 2. Old Boys was dropped from the club’s name and in 1979 the first team joined the Staffordshire County League (North) and a third team was formed. In 1981, with the help of grants, fund raising and a loan, a four-acre field was purchased at Pershall. Then manager, Ted Dickinson, was the driving force behind the fund raising. In the same year, the first team moved into the Premier Division of the Staffordshire County League (North). Work began converting the field into a football ground. In 1982, a building was purchased from British Telecom and, with a lot of hard work over the next couple of years on the building, car park and pitch, Pershall Park, as it was christened, was ready. In the 1983-84 season, the first team won the Staffordshire County League Premier Division Championship, the Premier Division Cup and the May Bank Cup. During the 1989-90 season, the first team won the Staffordshire Senior League title and the 1990-91 season saw the club entering the FA Vase for the first time. In 1991-92, the club reached the FA Vase 2nd round having gone through all the preliminary stages but lost at home to Wisbech Town 2-0 in front of a then record crowd of 368. The first team fared well in the league in the mid to late 90’s, finishing 3rd (97-98), 6th (98-99), 2nd (99-00) and 3rd (00-01). Eccleshall reserves won the Staffordshire County League (North) in 1999-2000 moving to the West Midlands (Regional) League Division One (North) for the start of the following season. In the 2001-2002 season, the first team won the Springbank Vending Midland League Championship.

Eccleshall FC In 2002-2003 Eccleshall’s first team joined the North West Counties Football League after securing both the Springbank Vending Midland League title and Staffordshire FA Vase. In probably the most successful season in the club’s history, our second team were also Staffordshire County League champions and our Under 18s won the Sentinel Cup. For good measure, our Under 16s won the Staffordshire FA County Cup, the Mid-Staffordshire League Cup and the Sentinel Shield. Regarding the Sentinel competitions, the last time a club had won both trophies in the same season had been some twenty five years previously – a great achievement. The 2012-13 season marked the completion of 10 years in the North West Counties League and saw the club achieve its highest ever placing of sixth in Division 1. In 2017-18, our Under 17s had a very successful season, winning the Potteries Junior Youth League Cup, Staffordshire FA Youth Cup and finishing runners up in the league. Over the years since 1981-82, significant work has been undertaken to develop both the ground and the facilities to the required standard of the National League Pyramid which the club now enjoys. This includes enclosing the ground, the installation of floodlights, building a covered seated stand and pitch levelling. In 2019, a new toilet block was installed and previously the clubhouse was refurbished and upgraded with the addition of a treatment room and a security system. Prior to the 2018/19 season, a new kitchen and refreshments bar was added. For the 2021-22 season the team dugouts have been replaced and more spectator improvements made. Further developments to the ground are planned for the future. All of this has been achieved by a strong committee management team behind the scenes, a number of which have given many years of service to Eccleshall FC together with the addition of new members who are helping to take the club forward. The club has now added a number of junior teams as we look to develop a junior section. Our second pitch has been upgraded and improved to accommodate this. 2021 sees Eccleshall Football Club celebrate its 50th anniversary and, as can be seen from the above, much has been achieved over that time. We look forward to seeing what the future brings. We consider ourselves a friendly club and look forward to welcoming you to Pershall Park in the future and hope you will enjoy the facilities and the football.

Welcome to alsager town fc The merger of Alsager Institute and Alsager United formed ALSAGER AFC in 1965. The merger came about due to lack of pitches in the village. They acquired Wood Park in 1967 that was then seeded ready for the following season and it was first played on in 1968/69. Alsager AFC were playing in the Crewe League at this stage. In the early 70s the club decided they would like to try for the Mid-Cheshire League which they were successful in doing by bringing the ground up to a higher standard. They remained in this league and in 1985/86 they were Runners Up. The club folded due to the lack of funds and support. They then re-formed with just a youth team playing in the Crewe Premier League for two seasons. In 1991/92 they managed to regain entry in to the Mid Cheshire League Division Two where they remained until 1998/99 when the committee decided to try for the Springbank Vending League, where most of the Potteries teams were based. Steve Booth built a strong squad which was able to challenge for the title in their first season, but unfortunately Alsager were pipped at the post by Norton FC. The team were doing well enough and the committee decided to apply for the North West Counties Football League and after a lot of hard work by the committee Alsager AFC successfully passed the criteria necessary to gain entry, and a second place finish in the Staffs County Senior League was enough to gain promotion. Bad form after Christmas 1999 and the decision by Steve Booth to leave the club saw a new management team step in to the fold. Greg Clowes and his assistant Dorian Garner were welcomed to the club. They were in charge for the remaining 10 games of the season and managed to finish in a creditable 12th position. Their first full season in charge saw them achieve 7th place in the league and along with Warrington Town they kept the most clean sheets. Floodlighting was erected in August 2001 and then the addition of a new stand by the end of the season saw Alsager in prime position to challenge for promotion. During the summer of 2001 it was decided to change the name of the club back to Alsager Town and to run a side in the Springbank Vending League under the name of Alsager AFC A runners up spot in the 2001/02 season was enough to see Alager Town FC promoted to the NWCFL Division 1. During the close season resurfacing of the pitch, decoration of the club house and changing rooms and a new toilet block and tea bar gave Alsager Town an air of aristocracy as they aimed for success in the NWCFL. They remained in N.W.C.F.L. until the end of the 2005/06 season when they finished in third place. Due to THE changes being made by the FA to the non-league pyramid system Alsager were invited to step up to the Northern Premier League Division One which they did, they finished their first season in a creditable 14th place. Further changes were to be made by. With further changes to the Northern Premier League, Alsager Town were placed in to the Unibond League Division One South. Another 14th place finish was the outcome but the club fell foul to the ground grading regulations and with required work not completed in the required time given by the League they were relegated back to the North West Counties League Premier Division. Due this set back the management walked out. Former chairman Peter Clegg stepped in to take control of the club .

Former Witton Albion reserves coach Neil Gill was appointed as manager and for two seasons Neil Gill kept Alsager Town in the N.W.C.F.L Premier Division and then in early 2011 with finances tight the players expenses budget was cut and then later stopped completely. This was followed by the news that there were to be major changes at the club at the end of the season. Neil Gill, his assistant, the players and the committee walked away. Acting Chairman Mike Cross acted very quickly and the remaining committee members voted for change. Terry Greer the former Chairman of Biddulph Victoria was elected to become the new Chairman of Alsager Town F.C. Terry's first job was to appoint a new management team. Damian Grocott and Andy O'Connor stepped into the position, they signed a new squad of players and began the job of securing Alsager Town's place in the N.W.C.F.L. Premier Division. They worked hard to keep the status of the club securing it with three games in hand. For the 2011/12 season the club looked to move forward run by a new committee which was installed at the AGM in the May their aim being to improve the club in all aspects both on and off the pitch. The changing rooms and showers were upgraded, some of the club house had been re-decorated and the ground in general had been given a face lift when on the night of the Monday 11th July a catastrophic fire destroyed the office and part of the dressing rooms and club house. The whole building had to be demolished due its asbestos construction and the electricity was cut off due to the damage caused to the switch boxes etc. Following the disaster the committee worked very hard to get things in to place so that football could return to The Town ground. The committee of the N.W.C.F.L. helped where they could they switching fixtures for The Bullets and 99% of their games were played away from home until the November. A rebuilding programme immediately got underway and things went well, both on and off the pitch. Massive help from BAE Systems and their contractors followed and they had helped to rebuild the changing rooms so that football could return. A new manager in former coach John Brown was installed as manager At the end of the season John Brown, resigned as did the manager of the reserves. Chairman Terry Greer soon had replacements with former Tottenham Hotspur player Andy Turner taking over the reigns of the first team and Andy Ratcliffe Congleton Town's former Reserves Manager taking over the Bullets reserves who had just been promoted by invitation to the Staffs County Senior League Premier Division. Terry's gang (The workers) set about completing work around the new changing room complex, planning permission was sort to build a new club house and virtually 12 months to the day that permission was granted. In October 2012 the club received the news that they had been granted a massive 85,860 from the Football Foundation. Work was commenced on building a new car park and clubhouse. The modular building was delivered just 9 days before Christmas 2012, the contractors and Alsagers committee worked, tirelessly to get the club open for the Boxing Day game of 2012. The season went quite well for the new management, the team finishing in 15th place with 50 points. Their first season with the club gave them the necessary experience of the league which they got and everyone at the club was looking to the new season. There were many new signings with some of last years squad having decided to stay. Things didn't go well for the first X1 and they spent most of their time in the lower reaches of the league and then unexpectedly Andy Turner resigned in the new year. Phil Parkinson stepped into the breach bringing in his own team. They managed to evade relegation by winning the last three games of the season. Just before the pre-season training Phil tendered his resignation after getting a promotion at work. He was succeeded by the his two assistants Craig Dove and Danny Griggs. They were given the task to continue with the improvements started by Phil Parkinson.

AWAY DAY JOY FOR THE EAGLES

After last week’s defeat at Brocton, manager Liam Kelly rang the changes and introduced three new signings for the match at Cheadle Heath Nomads. Both Calum Huxley and Samuel Marsh were in the starting line-up, with Kobe McWilliams on the bench. With Eccleshall still in the bottom three and the gap widening, they needed to find something from this game. Nomads had an early chance when Kyle Foley’s shot was deflected for a corner and from this, Daniel McLoughlin headed wide. More Nomads pressure led to Max Lewens shooting wide with Eagles keeper Eric Merner beaten. It was a shaky opening fifteen minutes for Eccleshall and Nomads took the lead six minutes later when Kieran O’Connell netted with a scrambled effort which sneaked under Merner into the corner. The goal stung Eagles into action and a great Luke Lewis run and lay-off left Louis Downs clear, but he failed to capitalise. Moments later, another Lewis cross led to Downs’ downward header being saved by Nomads’ keeper, Adam Rigby. Eccleshall were now pressing forward far more, and Rigby saved again from Downs. O’Connell was booked for a foul on Huxley who had been raiding down the left. On 37 minutes, Eagles equalised. Huxley worked his way to the by-line and his cross was powerfully headed home by Lewis. Soon later, Huxley himself cut inside but his shot was over the bar. With half time approaching, Foley let fly from 20 yards, but the shot was just wide of the post with Merner beaten. HT: Cheadle Heath Nomads 1 Eccleshall 1 Eccleshall showed their intent and took the lead within a minute of the restart when a free kick by Huxley led to Liam Robinson’s header hitting the post and Harvey Collins fired home the rebound. Back came Nomads and Jordan Milne headed wide from a free kick. Huxley then set up Robinson, who fired wide. On 62 minutes, Nomads equalised when a shot was punched clear by Merner but it fell to Charlie Mulgrew who was lurking on the edge of the box and he volleyed home. The pace of the game increased, with both sides looking for another goal. Kelly brought Jack Dundas on for Downs, but it was Foley with another chance and forcing Merner into a decent save. Then McLaughlin fired over the bar. A deflected shot by Craig Coates brought another save from the Eagles’ keeper. However, it was Eccleshall who went back in front on 72 minutes when Dundas fired the ball past Rigby to find the far corner. Lewis Doughty came on for Robinson and Nomads were pressing forward in the remaining minutes for the equaliser but the Eagles stood firm to see out the game. FT: Cheadle Heath Nomads 2 Eccleshall 3 After recent matches, this was a good solid performance by an Eccleshall side who showed good battling qualities and a determination not to be beaten. Newcomers Huxley and Marsh caught the eye, playing their part in what was a great and much needed result. With no game over the festive period, Liam Kelly and his squad will look to build on this when they resume league action against Alsager Town at Pershall Park on 8. January. Eagles: Merner, Draper, Dunn (Taylor), Benton, Collins, Marsh, Lewis, Feeney, Downs (Dundas), Huxley, Robinson (Doughty). Unused subs: McWilliams, Chesters Referee: Mr Kavan Hurn Attendance: 67
