VIEW FROM THE DUGOUT Good afternoon and welcome to this afternoon’s game against Barnton FC. Since I last wrote my notes we picked up a huge 3 points in a local derby away to Abbey Hulton Utd, In a game that was a real battle in poor conditions, the lads dug deep to make sure we came away with a 3-1 victory. It doesn’t get much better than beating one of your local rivals away from home and this performance really showed how far we have come as a team on and off the field. Last weekend we travelled to Isle Of Man FC. A lengthy delay In the airport threw our travel arrangements up in the air but this didn’t stop the lads from heading into the game in good spirits. Despite losing 1-0 we went toe to toe with another top side and to only concede a goal from a corner with our centre-forward in goal replacing our injured goalkeeper, shows how much we have improved defensively. To have a stonewall penalty not given was frustrating as I thought we had done enough to at least take a point from the game. I was extremely proud watching our lads yet again give 100% for the shirt, which is a common theme in recent weeks. We now have some breathing space between ourselves and the bottom 3. Myself and the rest of the management team are now focusing on climbing the table and finishing this season strongly. With new signings impressing, we strongly believe we have a great group who can kick on and be ready to have a successful campaign next season. We know the job is not completely done yet, but I have full faith in this group to ensure we don’t get dragged back into a relegation scrap.

Eccleshall FC There has been football in the town of Eccleshall for over 100 years but very little archive material is available from those early years. However, we do know that Eccleshall Football Club was reformed in 1971 with the team being made up of locals and staff from the Eccleshall Secondary School which also provided training and playing facilities. At that time, the club was called Eccleshall Old Boys Football Club. In 1974, the team won their first trophies; the Mid-Staffs 3rd Division Cup and were also runners-up in that division, gaining promotion to Division 2. Old Boys was dropped from the club’s name and in 1979 the first team joined the Staffordshire County League (North) and a third team was formed. In 1981, with the help of grants, fund raising and a loan, a four-acre field was purchased at Pershall. Then manager, Ted Dickinson, was the driving force behind the fund raising. In the same year, the first team moved into the Premier Division of the Staffordshire County League (North). Work began converting the field into a football ground. In 1982, a building was purchased from British Telecom and, with a lot of hard work over the next couple of years on the building, car park and pitch, Pershall Park, as it was christened, was ready. In the 1983-84 season, the first team won the Staffordshire County League Premier Division Championship, the Premier Division Cup and the May Bank Cup. During the 1989-90 season, the first team won the Staffordshire Senior League title and the 1990-91 season saw the club entering the FA Vase for the first time. In 1991-92, the club reached the FA Vase 2nd round having gone through all the preliminary stages but lost at home to Wisbech Town 2-0 in front of a then record crowd of 368. The first team fared well in the league in the mid to late 90’s, finishing 3rd (97-98), 6th (98-99), 2nd (99-00) and 3rd (00-01). Eccleshall reserves won the Staffordshire County League (North) in 1999-2000 moving to the West Midlands (Regional) League Division One (North) for the start of the following season. In the 2001-2002 season, the first team won the Springbank Vending Midland League Championship.
Eccleshall FC In 2002-2003 Eccleshall’s first team joined the North West Counties Football League after securing both the Springbank Vending Midland League title and Staffordshire FA Vase. In probably the most successful season in the club’s history, our second team were also Staffordshire County League champions and our Under 18s won the Sentinel Cup. For good measure, our Under 16s won the Staffordshire FA County Cup, the Mid-Staffordshire League Cup and the Sentinel Shield. Regarding the Sentinel competitions, the last time a club had won both trophies in the same season had been some twenty five years previously – a great achievement. The 2012-13 season marked the completion of 10 years in the North West Counties League and saw the club achieve its highest ever placing of sixth in Division 1. In 2017-18, our Under 17s had a very successful season, winning the Potteries Junior Youth League Cup, Staffordshire FA Youth Cup and finishing runners up in the league. Over the years since 1981-82, significant work has been undertaken to develop both the ground and the facilities to the required standard of the National League Pyramid which the club now enjoys. This includes enclosing the ground, the installation of floodlights, building a covered seated stand and pitch levelling. In 2019, a new toilet block was installed and previously the clubhouse was refurbished and upgraded with the addition of a treatment room and a security system. Prior to the 2018/19 season, a new kitchen and refreshments bar was added. For the 2021-22 season the team dugouts have been replaced and more spectator improvements made. Further developments to the ground are planned for the future. All of this has been achieved by a strong committee management team behind the scenes, a number of which have given many years of service to Eccleshall FC together with the addition of new members who are helping to take the club forward. The club has now added a number of junior teams as we look to develop a junior section. Our second pitch has been upgraded and improved to accommodate this. 2021 sees Eccleshall Football Club celebrate its 50th anniversary and, as can be seen from the above, much has been achieved over that time. We look forward to seeing what the future brings. We consider ourselves a friendly club and look forward to welcoming you to Pershall Park in the future and hope you will enjoy the facilities and the football.

Another successful club funding application We received confirmation from the Football Foundation last week that the club had been successful with their application for grant funding to develop the land behind the stand to install a seven-a-side pitch / training pitch. The Foundation’s partners are the Premier League, the Football Association, and the Government. The total funding received for the project is £17,130. It is hoped that the work will commence in the close season and will be ready for the start of the 2022/23 season. Well done to Junior Section Chairman, Andy Gough, who prepared the application following discussions with Staffordshire FA. His efforts ensure that the continuing development of our facility at Pershall Park is maintained.
Eagles on Tour On Saturday 12. February, Eccleshall FC, for the first time, travelled by plane to an away match when they flew to Douglas for our NWCL fixture against FC Isle of Man the following day. The outcome of the match is reported elsewhere but, instead of enduring delays up and down the M6 for the journey, our party were subject to a six-and-a-half-hour delay at Liverpool airport for the outward flight and well over an hour’s delay for the return. Playing in front of a crowd of 1068, the Eagles gave a good account of themselves against the team second in the league. The photo shows the club party waiting for their flight at Liverpool airport. MATCH REPORT LATER IN PROGRAMME
Junior News On Monday 14. February, Jon Edensor’s Under 13s team played a 9 v 9 friendly against an academy side in the Dome at Wolverhampton Wanderers. The game was played in quarters: first – 4-0, second – 1-0, third – 0-0, fourth – 3-1. Although the team lost on the evening, they gave a really good account of themselves and enjoyed the experience.
Breaking news – the Under 12s have reached the semi-finals of the MJPL Cup. Well done to all involved!

JUNIOR EAGLES Juniors Chairman, Andy Gough, writes:
The junior section at Eccleshall Football Club is going from strength to strength and we now have sides at Under 9s, Under 12s, Under 13s and Under 15s levels, playing in good and challenging leagues. Much work has been put in to developing the junior pitch facilities and, moving forward, we are currently in discussion with Staffordshire FA to explore funding for adding another on the area behind the stand. The future is looking very promising. Up to this point in the 2021/22 season, the results achieved by the teams are very positive and, what is more encouraging, is that they are producing good quality football on both a Saturday and Sunday. It is hoped that, with the pandemic gradually moving behind us, that the season can be completed without any interruptions and that we can finish with some silverware. It goes without saying that this development can only progress further with a lot of hard work and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone within the club for their continued support. The younger goalkeepers have also been benefiting from coaching by first team goalkeeping coach Harry Pickering. Under 15s keeper Conna Boulton and Under 13s keeper Jack Sharratt have taken part in sessions and their parents and team-mates have seen improvements in their game as a result. Conna recently helped to warm up first team keeper Aaron Woolrich before the game against Stoke City and will gain from being close to senior football and the match day experience. We will be looking for the three other keepers to get involved in these coaching sessions in the future. Reflecting the junior section link with our senior team, the Under 13s North Staffs Junior League side formed a guard of honour as the players came on to the pitch against Stoke City and enjoyed being part of the evening.

WELCOME BARNTON FC
Barnton Football Club was founded in 1946 and in 1948 they became a founder member of the Mid-Cheshire League. They have played in that league ever since and are one of two clubs to have been in this league throughout its 68 year history, the other being Knutsford (the league was renamed the Cheshire Association Football League in 2007). As of the mid2000s the club has won the league on eleven occasions, including seven consecutive league titles between 1996/97 and 2002/03. The pinnacle of the club's success came with the winning of the National League Systems Cup while representing the Mid-Cheshire League in the inaugural competition of 2003/04, beating West Cheshire, Liverpool Combination and South Western League opposition along the way before defeating the Cambridgeshire County League 2-0 on their home soil in the final. As a result of this they went on to represent England in the UEFA Regions Cup in Slovenia and Bosnia where they won four, drew one and lost one of their games, narrowly failing to reach the final stages of the competition. The club has also participated in the FA Cup on five occasions (1948/49, 1949/50, 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19) failing to get past their extra preliminary round games on each occasion. They have also competed in the FA Vase on four occasions (1985/86, 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19) not getting through the preliminary rounds on any occasion and winning just one game in this competition. The club submitted an application to join the North West Counties League for the start of the 2014-15 season. They were successful in their application and were confirmed to take their place in the First Division on May 29th 2014. At the 2013/14 annual awards The Cheshire League presented Barnton a trophy to commemorate their 66 years in the league and wished every success in the N.W.C.F.L. Following 2 years at the helm manager Steve Lloyd and assistant Manager Mike Alcock stepped down from management with Steve taking up the role of chairman and Mike also taking a prominent role in club development. The net result of this for the 2018/19 season was an introduction of a full junior section with all age groups from 4-18 and further expansion planned for the 2019/20 season. For the 2020-21 season there's a lot of change ay Barnton. Most of the committee take a back seat and junior section Chairman Dave Bryning and Junior Section Secretary take on the key roles of Chairman and secretary/treasurer for the whole club not just the junior section. Niall Owens expands his portfolio to program and media and Iain Wright joins the board as match day secretary. On the pitch a mid season change of management in 2019-20 saw Liam Page and Neil Murray take the helm with Garry Moore take up the role of director of football

ISLE OF MAN WIN ‘THE BATTLE OF THE BIRDS’ Eccleshall travelled to Douglas for their first ever visit to the island for a league match. The Ravens were playing their second match in 24 hours, having drawn with Cammell Laird on Saturday evening as part of a weekend ‘double-header’. With regular Eagles ‘keeper Aaron Woolrich likely to be out for the rest of the season with a hand injury, new signing Morgan Chilton came straight into the starting line-up. In front of a decent crowd, an early Ravens attack was blocked for a corner by Harvey Collins before a free kick by Chris Bass led to a header just wide of the post. On eight minutes, the home side thought they had gone in front when, after a drop ball, Luke Murray lashed the ball past Chilton from twenty yards. However, after consultation with his linesman, referee Cliff disallowed the goal. As the half progressed, Isle of Man had had plenty of possession but had really posed no real threat on the Eccleshall goal. In reply, Collins had a shot blocked for a corner before a Calum Huxley corner was met on the half-volley by Callum Feeney and this was turned away by Ravens keeper, Matthew Quirk. Then Lee Gale’s free kick brought a good save out of Chilton. On 40 minutes, a good move involving Eagles’ Liam Robinson found Luke Lewis and his shot was deflected into the side netting. Quirk held the resulting corner. A Furo Davies effort was cleared for a corner by Jordan Benton. From this, lanky striker Murray powered a header against the bar and the ball was cleared. In added time, a power shot by Davies brought another good save from Chilton. HT: FC Isle of Man 0 Eccleshall 0 Eagles made a good start to the second half with Lewis Dunn and Niall Butchart sparking early moves on the Ravens goal. On 50 minutes, Ravens’ sub, Daniel Simpson, moved forward on goal and Chilton came out to block for a corner, getting injured in the process. After a long period of treatment, he was unable to continue. With no sub keeper, striker Robinson went in goal and Lucas Green-Birch came on up front. Straight from the restart, the Ravens took the lead when Gale’s corner was powerfully headed home by Murray. The Ravens were now looking to exploit the change of keeper, but Robinson came out to dive at the feet of Gale as he was ready to shoot. There was a clear shout for what appeared a stonewall Eagles penalty when Lewis was brought down in the box, but the referee turned away the claims. Liam Kelly brought on James Lindop for Benton before a good move by Green-Birch and Lewis led to a corner which came to nothing. A cross by Huxley was just too high for Green-Birch before Simpson found Gale and his shot was superbly blocked by Dunn. In added time, Stephen Whitley brought a great save out of Robinson and then Collins brilliantly headed a return effort off the line. George Woodroffe came on for Jordan Darlington and then a long ball from Robinson almost found Huxley running clear. There was time for another Robinson save before the final whistle went. FT: Isle of Man 1 Eccleshall 0 Having gone toe-to-toe with the team second in the league, Eccleshall should hold their heads high after delivering a resolute performance. Hopefully, injured debutant Morgan Chilton will be back soon but striker Liam Robinson who replaced him in goal for most of the second half proved a more than capable deputy. Eagles now face league leaders West Didsbury and Chorlton at Pershall Park on Tuesday evening before travelling to fourth placed Wythenshawe Amateurs on Saturday. The tough games keep coming but they should hold no fears for an Eagles team in good spirits. Eagles: Chilton (Robinson), Darlington (Woodroffe), Dunn, Benton (Lindop), Groom, Collins, Butchart, Feeney, Robinson (Green-Birch), Huxley, Lewis. Unused subs: Doughty, Rowley. Referee: Mr Jack Cliff Attendance: 1068
