Talk of The Town Good afternoon everyone and welcome to our game down here at the Red Industries Stadium. Today we welcome Bootle who are making the trip from Merseyside to be with us and we wish them an enjoyable visit and a safe journey home. It has been a sad week down here at Newcastle when news reached us of the passing of our Chairman Paul Ratcliffe following a short illness. Our thoughts are with the family and friends at this especially sad time. Paul was in his second spell at the club and in his time here has played a big part in the development of the Club. There will be a minutes silence before the game to add to the many tributes from around football. Since our last game, an important victory at Colne, Rob has strengthened the squad bringing in first of all highly regarded striker Eden Bailey on a month's Work Experience from Port Vale (he scored against us in the pre-season game and also bringing back winger/full -back Mike Conlon on a dual registration with Sandbach United. We transferred Mike to Widnes a couple of years ago as his family moved up there. Next Saturday the First Team will be making the trip up into the Pennines to play Mossley before returning to play two home games in four days against Glossop North End and then the re-arranged fixture against 1874 Northwich that was cancelled following the storms which swept the country. Hope you enjoy the game and a safe journey home.

View from the Dugout Today we host Bootle at the Red Industries stadium with 3 vital points at stake for both clubs. Our ambitions are clear, to steer clear of the fight to avoid 3rd from bottom and a potential play-off and have 9 games to achieve this. We have taken great confidence from our 1-0 win away to Colne which was a solid performance all round and a vital clean sheet. Although it’s natural to look behind you but in the situation we are in, we firmly believe that we are capable of climbing the league table and overtaking some of the teams just above us. We have made some great signings since Christmas and this week we would like to welcome Mikey Conlon back to the club after a couple of years away. Mikey is a solid performer at this level and is a player we fully trust which is massively important at this stage of the season. We have also signed a very good young Talented striker from our friends and neighbours Port Vale FC Eden Bailey, Welcome to NTFC. We will look forward to a good game of football and hope you all enjoy our hospitalities.

Bootle FC Club History The original Bootle FC were formed in 1880 and played adjacent to Bootle Cricket Club, on Hawthorne Road. The club were Everton FC’s main rivals and competed with Everton for the prestigious place in the newly formed Football League. Because only one club per area were permitted to join, Bootle narrowly lost out, despite the fact that in the run up to the decision Everton were banned from both the FA Cup and the Liverpool Senior Cup the previous year. However Bootle lost out and in 1889–90 Bootle became founder members of the Football Alliance, which became the newly formed Football League second division. That season was the most successful as the club finished league runners-up and reached the quarterfinals of the FA Cup, losing to Blackburn Rovers. When the Alliance merged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle became founder members of the new Second Division. However, despite finishing in a respectable 8th place, the club dropped out after one season due to ongoing financial problems. Ironically a new local club, Liverpool, took Bootle’s place in the second division. The possible resurrection of a Bootle team became a distinct probability in August 1947 when local councillors identified the popularity and talent on show in the ‘Bootle JOC’ league and knew the town was big enough to be put back on the football map with its own team again. For years now it had been an exporter of its many players to other clubs, both professional and semi-professional. The promise of sponsorship money from local businesses brought great optimism and the issue of one shilling shares further boosted club finances. After local residents were assured that the ground at Bootle Stadium (Maguire Avenue) would not be used solely as a football ground, an application to join the Lancashire Combination for the 1948/49 season was made, and accepted. Club colours even posed a problem, red or blue were dismissed for fear of showing favour to either of the ‘big two’ so it was agreed that, as the original Bootle FC wore white shorts, this colour would be adopted. Players mostly came from the local league and surrounding clubs, however one player that Bootle overlooked was a tall, blonde, ex-prisoner- of-war German, Bert Trautman. Trautman, then living in Huyton, trained with Bootle at the stadium for several weeks but, with the area taking such a heavy pounding during the war, it was decided not to tempt any local bitterness and he was allowed to join St Helens Town and of course moved on to FA Cup and Manchester City folklore. They kicked off their new campaign in 1948 against Barnoldswick and district. The league was won at the first attempt. However, Bootle struggled in the top-flight and after several tough seasons and also a change in Council priorities they withdrew from the league and folded during the 1953–54 campaign.

Bootle FC Club History In 1953, the current club was formed as Langton with Frank Doran Senior being one of the founding members. The club played in the various local Bootle leagues. After a very successful spell in the Liverpool County Combination – winning the leagues and cups on various occasions the club requested to change its name to the latest incarnation of Bootle FC. This was accepted in 1973 and a year later ‘the Bucks’ joined the Lancashire Combination. After winning the Combination in both 1976 and 1977, Bootle then joined the Second Division of the Cheshire County League, which was won in the first season, and were promoted to the First Division. In 1982 the Cheshire County League was one of the leagues that merged to form the North West Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming a member of the First Division (Which is now called the Premier Division). The club spent most of their time in the First Division until 2000 when the club was relegated to the Second Division. However, despite finishing 6th in 2002, the club dropped into the Liverpool County Combination as Bucks Park on Copy Lane closed its doors for the final time. In 2006 the club, with a new ground on Vesty Road, Bootle were elected back into Division 2 of the North West Counties League. In 2009 Bootle won promotion to the NWCFL Premier Division and also won the Championship. In 2009/10, the first season back in the NWCFL Premier Division Bootle finished 3rd. IThey equalled the 3rd place again in 2012. In 2016/17 they finished runner-up which is their highest placing in the NWCFL. In 2018-19 the Bucks went on an amazing 20 game winning run that saw us in the driving seat to get promoted on the final day of the season with one more win. However that win was one too many and the club agonisingly missed out after a 1-1 draw, and so once again finished runners-up. In Spring 2020, a huge investment was made on the pitch, with a new ‘hybrid’ pitch being built with the help of the football foundation and Sport England. One of only two in the North being built for football, this is a new landmark for Bootle FC. The new pitch goes hand in hand with the investment off the pitch with the investment in the facilities making it a massive community asset. Everyone associated with the club was left shocked and saddened in January following the sad passing of our President, Frank Doran Senior. Anyone involved with football both locally and across the North West would have known Frank, or Mr Bootle as he was affectionately known, for his booming voice, quick wit and his extensive knowledge and love of football. Frank was a Docker, but more importantly for him, a footballer who was part of the 1954 Langton FC team that became the latest incarnation of Bootle FC. It was Frank who drove the club forward, as player, manager, secretary, chairman, groundsman - you name it and latterly president of the club.

Bootle FC Club History He would be seen every day up at both Bucks Park, on Copy Lane, and more recently at Vesty Road doing one job or another at the club, and that continued right up until December when the latest lockdown happened. Frank’s memory will last forever in the town of Bootle, and in the hearts of everyone who knew him. In May of this year, the club’s promotion to the Northern Premier League Division 1 West was confirmed by the Football Association. This is now the highest level that Bootle FC has competed at since we reformed in 1954 and is a testament to the work started by Frank Doran Snr and carried on today by Joe Doran. We now feel we have got all the foundations in place for the club to keep going on this journey. Our fan base is increasing year on year, we own one of the best pitches in NonLeague football, our ground and facilities have improved considerably in the last few years, we are developing our youth teams, and we are forever increasing our presence in the local community.

BOOTLE FC

SEASON SO FAR

Bootle FC 21/22 SQUAD Brian Richardson - No stranger to anyone in Non-League football, Richardson joined the club from FC United of Manchester earlier this month. The former Skelmersdale United assistant has a wealth of experience, particularly of this division, having most recently managed Prescot Cables, where on two occasions they narrowly missed out on promotion. Theo Roberts - Having started his career at Wigan Athletic, Roberts then joined Chester FC in 2018. During his time at the Swansway Stadium, Roberts spent time on loan at Buxton, Atherton Collieries and Mossley. After leaving Chester, the goalkeeper signed for Curzon Ashton before spending time with City of Liverpool and AFC Bury. Jack McGovern - Joined the club in the summer of 2018 having previously represented Cammel Lairds in the North West Counties League. Previous clubs include Chester Nomads, Tiverton Town and Plymouth Argyle Youth Academy. Jay Roberts - One of the club’s newest recruits, Roberts has plenty of experience in the Northern Premier League Division One and returns to the Bucks at the start of September from Widnes having had spells with us in the North West Counties. Michael Carberry - Another player who is in his second spell with the club, with his dad having also represented the Bucks in the past. Leaving for Runcorn Town in the summer of 2017, Carberry re-joined the club a year later. Will Bell - Joined the club last season from Colwyn Bay, having previously played for Bala Town in the Welsh Premier League. A commanding centre-back, Bell also spent time at Morecambe as a youth scholar before making the switch to Non-League. James McCarten - One of the club’s newest recruits, the centre-back joined the club in the summer from City of Liverpool. The former Everton youth scholar was made club captain during the course of his second full season with the Purps, having joined them from Warrington Town. James Cooper - One of the club’s new recruits, Cooper joined the club from Prescot Cables following the arrival of Brian Richardson as the club’s new manager. Comfortable in positions across the back, Cooper can also play in midfield. Liam Loughlin - The central-midfielder arrived at the club in February 2016 after 5 years with AFC Liverpool. A former Buck who made appearances for former manager Chris O’Brien, Liam went on to play in the League of Wales and Evo-Stik before returning to NWCFL with AFC. Since his return to the club, Loughlin has been the club’s first team captain and played a key role in helping us to promotion. Connor Millington - Another who has played a key role in the club’s promotion. Millington joined the club in the summer of 2017 from local side Aigburth People’s Hall. The centralmidfielder already has Northern Premier League experience having played for Warrington Town in the past.

Bootle FC 21/22 SQUAD Jordan Wynne - Originally starting out at AFC Fylde, the midfielder joined the club in the summer having also had spells with Prescot Cables in the past. A box-to-box operator, Wynne arrives at the club with plenty of NPL experience. Martyn Jackson - One of the club’s newest recruits, Jackson joined the club back in October from Prescot Cables. The former former Manchester United and Burnley midfielder has also had spells with AFC Telford and Witton Albion. Matthew McDonald - Joined the club on loan from Warrington Town at the start of December. McDonald spent the past two seasons at Crewe having previously been on the books at Everton before linking up with Town in the summer. Morgan Homson-Smith - The winger joined the club from FC United of Manchester, having also joined them from Southport. An ex-Morecambe scholar, Smith has also played for Prescot Cables, Harrogate Town, AFC Fylde and Kendal Town. Jack McGowan - An ever-present since returning to the club properly last season, McGowan has quickly established himself as a fans favourite. Having had numerous short spells with the club in the past, the forward is another with NPL experience having represented Cammel Lairds in the league. Matthew Hamilton - Another of the club’s newest recruits, Hamilton joined the club from Skelmersdale United. The forward arrived at the Berry Street Garage Stadium with plenty of Northern Premier League experience having previously played with Prescot Cables. Henri Ogunby - The left-winger recently joined the club from Alsager Town, having begun his football career with Manchester City. After coming through the ranks of the City Academy, Ogunby left the club in January 2020 and moved to Burnley, where he remained until June of that year. Ben Hodgkinson - The forward re-joined the club in February 2020 after he left Widnes by mutual consent. Hodkinson joined the Whites in November 2017 from the Bucks and went on to score 42 goals in the NWCFL and NPL. He has also represented Skelmersdale United in the past. Tom Peterson - The forward joined the club from Fleetwood Town following the conclusion of his scholarship back in the summer of 2013. He then left the club to join City of Liverpool three years later, but returned last summer after scoring 64 times in 158 appearances for the Purps.

This week we caught up with two Bootle FC fans on Twitter and put the following questions to them In your opinion how has your season been so far? @ItAFunnyOldLife - Pleasantly surprising, after an initial difficult start, we have grown into the league. We replaced our long-term manager with a more experienced one and it has seemed to have worked. @mcelroy_ellis - This season has been a mixed rollercoaster of emotions a slow start but gained monument as the season has continued pulling up a few upsets along the way and hoping to keep doing so.

Which player has surprised you the most this season? @ItAFunnyOldLife - Connor Millington. From being one of Bootle’s key players in the North West Counties, he has stepped up to the plate when needed and never looked out of place. @mcelroy_ellis - A player that has impressed me this season most has to be ben hodkinson he has been so consistent this year banging goal after goal and doesn’t look like stopping soon

Which player do you think will be the one to cause Castle the most trouble today? @ItAFunnyOldLife - Tough one, we have been a free-scoring side so you could pick any of the front line, but the stand out is Ben Hodkinson, leading goalscorer in the league, 25 in all competitions this season for Bootle.

@mcelroy_ellis - The person i think will cause the most problems is tom Peterson as he is such a hard working player that all top teams need no matter the level

Do you think you can still make the playoffs this season? @ItAFunnyOldLife - I think so, the set back at Glossop a few weeks ago has made it a lot more difficult but as we’ve seen many times this season, we are very capable of going on a long winning run, we are 7 points behind Runcorn Linnets with 1 game in hand and still to play them in the coming weeks, but we also have some tough fixtures still ahead of us so hopefully we can. @mcelroy_ellis - I do believe we can still make the playoffs this season as we have had a season full of upset s why cant we pull of one more and get into the playoffs

What has been the best game you have ever watched as a Bootle fan and why? @ItAFunnyOldLife - I have been to a lot of great ones, including a 10-0 a few seasons back, but I can’t look any further than beating our local rivals Marine 2 days after Christmas, bearing in mind the positions in the league at the time and the contrast of forms going into the game. @mcelroy_ellis - The best game i have watched as a bootle fan has to be marine away when we beat them 3-0 all your friends who support them telling you that use havent got a chance just to go beat them in the fashion we done it was unbelievable

This week we caught up with two Bootle FC fans on Twitter and put the following questions to them If you could sign any player for Bootle who would it be and why?

What is your score prediction for todays game?

@ItAFunnyOldLife - All the lads are playing well so this is tough, I think we’ve seen this season when our full backs are missing we have to play our wingers in them positions then the squad is unbalanced, there’s a lad called Kyle Hayde who plays for Marine who seems to be a bright young player, so I believe he could be a great backup for Jay Roberts.

@ItAFunnyOldLife - Today’s game will be a tough one as we have come to expect in this league, but I can’t go against my team and especially how we are playing currently, I will say 3-1 Bootle.

@mcelroy_ellis - One player id love to have at bootle is ryan brooke from runcorn linnets as i think him and our top scorer ben hodkinson would be unbelievable playing along side each other

KYLE HAYDE

@mcelroy_ellis - I think the score will be 21 bootle

We would like to thank both @ItAFunnyOldLife & @mcelroy_ellis for their time and answering these questions and we wish you both the best and if you are here today we hope you enjoy the game.
