How to Consider Assistive Technology at an IEP.......................................... 240 June 2010

6

WHAT IS ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY (AT)? Assistive Technology can be divided into two categories: Product and Service Product: AT is a piece of equipment from a paper clip to a computer that is a necessary tool for a student to make progress towards their IEP goals. There is a range of devices from low to high technology that may assist a student. It is usually advised to consider low technology solutions first since they are easiest to acquire and implement. Higher technology devices should be considered for more complex situations where the power of a computer or software would be helpful. Low Technology Solutions:  Pencil grips specialized paper, highlighters, post-it notes, book holders, paper holders, stamps, adaptive rulers, magnifiers, wipe off boards, non-slip pads, math line, magnetic letters, adaptive scissors, See It Right color overlays, key stickers for enlarging letters on the keyboard, word walls, picture schedules  Generally speaking, low technology requires no batteries. Mid Technology Solutions:  Talking calculators, money calculators, visual timers, tape recorders, multi-channel digital recorders, Math Mat, talking spell checker/dictionaries, Bookwork  Generally speaking, mid technology requires batteries.

High Technology Solutions:  Portable word processors like the AlphaSmart or the Writer, Voice recognition software like Dragon Naturally Speaking, reading/writing software (Clicker 4, Pix Writer, Picture, Speaking Dynamically Pro) talking work processor (Write Outloud), word prediction software (Co-Writer), scan and read programs (Kurzweil), Boardmaker  Generally speaking, high technology needs to be plugged in.

Service: This is the process of selecting, acquiring and teaching the student how to use the needed AT product so that the student can make progress towards their IEP goals. These services include:  Evaluation of the needs of the child with a disability.  Purchasing, leasing or otherwise providing for the acquisition of the AT device.  Selecting, designing, fitting, customizing, adapting, applying, maintaining or repairing the AT device.  Coordinating and using other therapies, interventions or services with AT devices, such as those associated with existing education.  Training or technical assistance for a child with a disability.  Training or technical assistance for professional.

Quick definition of AT: Assistive technology makes things possible for people with a disability. Assistive technology makes things easier for people without a disability.

7

WHAT IS UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING (UDL)? 

The goal of UDL is to develop products and a physical setting so that they are usable by all people without the need for adaptation or specialized design.

Accessibility is considered part of the initial design, not an after thought.

Accommodates all people including individuals with disabilities.

Examples of UDL  Text to speech 

Picture menus

Websites used in curriculum have accessibility features i.e. tab through web page, tags to describe icons, peripheral devices and programs are compatible

Electronic versions of textbooks and other curricular materials

Captioned and/or narrated videos

Word processors with word prediction

Speaking spell checkers

Voice recognition
