FCC Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) Guidelines

Wayzata Public Schools filters internet content based on guidelines laid out by CIPA, below is an outline of those guidelines: Internet Safety Policy issues that must be addressed: • Access by minors to inappropriate material • Safety/security of minors when using email, chat rooms, other direct electronic communications • Unauthorized access, including “hacking” and other unlawful activities by minors online • Unauthorized disclosure, use and dissemination of personal information regarding minors • Measures designed to restrict minors’ access to materials harmful to minors Technology Protection Measure (filter): • Specific technology that blocks or filters Internet access • Must protect against access by adults and minors to visual depictions that are obscene, child pornography, or harmful to minors • Can be disabled for adults engaged in bona fide research or other lawful purposes

Wayzata Public SchoolsMyWay Reminder from the Student Handbook Students may not attempt to manipulate the operating system on the iPad. Students may not reset the iPad to factory settings. Students may not apptempt to remove the mobile device management software or bypass the District Internet filtering solution. You may not attempt to break security protocols. If an iPad is jailbroken, it voids the warranty. If you jailbreak (process of removing limitations imposed by the manufacturer) your iPad, you are responsible for the cost of the device.

Expectations / Behavior for Student iPads Restrictions and Games:

• Jailbreaking voids warranty and violates policy • Music, apps, photo, games, and other digital content are subject to the acceptable use policy

Care, Custody, Control ­— Responsibility / Trust

• District issued iPads must be kept in protective cases at all times.

• Students are expected to use the iPads appropriately for educational purposes. The use of the iPad is governed by District policies. Failure to follow instructions of District staff may result in disciplinary action.

To Verify District Issued iPad Protections & Restrictions

• To verify that Casper MDM and the included filter are installed on your iPad navigate to Settings > General > Profiles and verify that both “Casper MDM” is listed.

• To verify that the filtering is functioning properly you can try browsing to www.facebook.com from Safari (this requires logging into the web filter). If you receive a page blocked notice then the filter is functioning properly.
