Counselors’ Corner Freshmen Respect Retreat:

The 9 th grade Respect Retreat is scheduled for Tuesday, March 1. Youth Frontiers, Inc., of Minneapolis will present the day long retreat. The focus of the day will be on creating a more positive school climate by discussing the value of respect -- respecting ourselves, respecting others and standing up for the value of respect. The 9th grade class will be broken up into five groups and taken off-site for the day. We encourage parents/guardians to discuss the retreat experience as a family once the student returns home.

Upcoming State Tests:

State tests required for graduation are coming up in the month of April. Sophomores will take the MCAII Reading exam and juniors will take the MCA-II Math exam. All tests will be administered online and at various times throughout the month. Please watch for further information as April approaches.

Juniors:

Counselor recommendations for juniors and their parents for the post-high school planning process: (1) Take the ACT (administered to all juniors at WHS on Tuesday, March 15) and/or SAT sometime in the spring; (2) P a y attention to upcoming college visits in the CCC; (3) V i s i t s c h o o l s d u r i n g s p r i n g b r e a k , o t h e r s c h o o l b r e a k s a n d / o r o ve r t h e s u m m e r ; (4) Make an appointment for a planning session with your counselor this spring or during our limited summer hours.

Selective College Seminar:

Representatives from some of the more competitive national colleges and universities will be at Wayzata High School at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 7, for our Selective College Seminar. Colleges represented will be Northwestern University, the University of Notre Dame, Boston College, MIT, and Macalester. Each representative will give an overview of his/her school and its admissions process, followed by a question and answer session. The general information presented may apply to other selective colleges as well, not just the five schools represented that evening.

Graduation Credits:

It is important that seniors keep track of credits and maintain passing grades to ensure on-time graduation. Seniors must have 60 credits to graduate on June 3. Students are not allowed to participate in the ceremony without having all of their credits completed and graduation requirements met by June 3. Students who need to make up credits should check with the Counseling Office. Counselors have distributed transcripts at every group guidance session and have sent letters home to parents of students who are short credits. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of students and parents to make sure all graduation requirements are met on time. More

Chemical Health Dateline’s Attention to Synthetic’s Drugs Wayzata Parents, Many people were discussing the February 21, 2016 edition of Dateline that reported Tara Fitzgerald, 17, from Woodbury, died from taking a synthetic form of LSD on January 11, 2014. A local dealer supplied the drugs to students at Woodbury High School that passed from three other students before making its way to Tara. The drug is actually not like LSD but a potent look alike that is packaged to appeal to younger users. Most youth would not seek out this drug for their recreational use as these types of drugs have a reputation of being dangerous and unpredictable. Tara thought she was getting LSD from her good friend, an honor student and football player, and instead ingested 25I or NBomb. Tara’s parents are like many others and assume their successful daughter with a bright future, would not be involved in drug use. It only took this one time, a bad decision and a bad drug. Tara was described as smart, outgoing and had lots of friends, but determined to try LSD. The lesson here is that it didn’t even cross the radar of Tara’s parents that she would try drugs and they assumed she knew better and that death by a drug is something that happens to other people.

If you saw this segment of Dateline, I am hoping you had a conversation with your child and perhaps you have been all along. Our children can be very convincing when it comes to assuring us that they would never experiment with drugs. After Tara died, the accessibility of synthetic drugs decreased in Woodbury. Who really knows where it may end up next?

We know it is available in our local communities as it is in many other areas in Minnesota and the country. Continue to be vigilant with conversations and relaying your expectations. Asking your own child what they hear or know is a great way to open up a discussion. Letting your child know that you trust them but not necessarily their “world” as the accessibility of these drugs can nudge their way in. I’m sure Tara’s name is being used in many households across the country attempting to prevent a similar tragedy. Let me know if you want to get involved in our communities’ efforts to reduce drug and alcohol use. Partners in Prevention is our local coalition working hard on behalf of all our youth. ~Judy Hanson Chemical Health Coordinator 763-745-6988 or judy.hanson@wayzata.k12.mn.us

A Message from Health Services The Health Office has had several reported cases of Influenza type A and with flu season upon us, it is important that we work together to keep our children healthy. Viruses spread easily among students in schools, and families with school-age children have more infections than others, with an average of one-third of these family members infected each year. By keeping our children flu-free, we benefit the community as a whole. You can help prevent the spread of flu or help your student get better if he/she does get sick by following a few simple steps: • If your child is sick and has a fever, keep him/her at home to prevent the spread of illness to others

• Remind your student to cover his/her nose and mouth with a tissue when sneezing or coughing and dispose of the tissue immediately • Have your student wash his/her hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds • Disinfect frequently-touched surfaces and shared items at least once a day • Ensure that bathrooms are stocked with soap, hand towels and tissues • Teach your child not to touch his/her mouth, nose and eyes

If you are concerned about your student’s flu symptoms, call your doctor early. Call your doctor immediately if your child has a chronic disease. Common symptoms of flu include high fever, severe headache, muscle and body aches, exhaustion and dry cough. Some children might benefit from an antiviral medication, which can be prescribed by a physician and can help lessen duration of the virus and reduce the risk of complications, such as pneumonia. To be effective, antiviral medication should be taken within 12-48 hours after flu symptoms begin.

If you have further question regarding the flu, consult the MDH website at: www.health.state.mn.us/divs/idepc/diseases/flu
