Supporting Summer Learning PTSA presentation May 2016
What is summer slide? Summer slide is the term used to describe the learning loss many school aged children experience over the summer months due to lack of educational engagement.
Did you know? v All students experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer. v Most students lose about TWO months of grade level equivalency in math and reading over the summer months. v Our AMAZING PTSA provides each student at SH a summer reading book! Look for these books and projects to come home at the end of the school year. THANK YOU!
Reading v Visit the local library. Try lots of different genres and help your reader get “hooked” on a new series! Our libraries also offer awesome free and fun summer reading programs. ://www.hclib.org/about/news/2015/June/summerreading v Be sure your child reads at least 20 minutes a day. Books, magazines, graphic novels, and comics are all great options!
Reading v Read to/with your child-even our older kids benefit from listening to adults read. When you read to your child, you are modeling fluency, expression, phrasing, and the rhythm of language. Kids also build vocabulary when hearing words they might not be able to read yet. v Play games with words. You can turn a game of hopscotch or 4 square into a game that incorporates learning letters or sight words.
