ayzata Public Schools Community Education is proud to present the Winter 2013 session of WISHES Youth Enrichment. The WISHES Youth Enrichment program provides elementary students with fun after school enrichment opportunities that are designed to enhance your child’s educational experience, as well as stimulate new interests in hobbies and recreational activities. Please note the location of each class. WISHES classes will meet at multiple locations. Students may attend classes in any building. Transportation is NOT provided. When registering for a class please note the time to be sure it does not interfere with your child’s school day. Flip this catalog over to see a complete listing of our spring classes. KidzArt Carnival Days Grades K-5 Come one, come all! Step right up for a fun four-week session where you will learn to draw, paint, and explore different mediums. You and your friends will learn to draw a carousel horse, fairgrounds, and a fortune teller. We will use metallic markers, chalk pastels and acrylic paints. You will also create a work of art inspired by the native culture of Australia; the aborigines who often created works of art about animals. Super Hero Film School Grades 1-5 BATMAN, SUPERMAN, SPIDERMAN or WONDER WOMAN! Pick your characters to star in your own mini-movie... the possibilities are endless. Action figures, Legos, backdrops and props will be available for filming in class. Handle all of the technical details including using a digital movie camera, filming scenes, stop-motion animation, downloading footage to the computer, digital editing and adding finishing special effects and transitions to the movie. In this exciting hands-on learning class, our instructors will take your student through the entire digital film making steps from start to finish using Frames Software. Student groups’ final projects will be available online for all to see, or students may bring a USB jump drive the last day to take home their films immediately. General Miscellaneous Babysitter Training Course Red Cross Certified AGES 11+ This course is essential for any young person interested in babysitting! Students will learn about child development and handling emergencies, including rescue breathing, first aid, preventing accidents, safety, feeding, diapering and more. Leadership and the responsibilities of the babysitter, as well as the expectations of parents and the business of babysitting are also covered. Participants will receive a Red Cross certificate, a babysitter’s handbook, a CD Rom and a handy emergency guide. Please bring a nut-free lunch, snack and drink each day. College Scholarships: What You Need to Know and Do in Middle School It is never too early to plan for paying for college. In fact, some of America’s top scholarship winners plan how to create their applications before attending high school! Join Jason Lum and learn what they know. This course is designed specifically for middle school students and parents who are wondering what to do in high school to improve their chances of winning scholarship money. Jason will provide tips and advice on what to do and what not to do in high school to improve the chances for success when applying for scholarships. Organizing Your Writing to Make it Stand Out (Email Tutoring) Grades 6-8 It starts with a sentence, then a paragraph, and then an essay. With so many rules to remember about how to organize each one, it’s like trying to put together a 10,000 piece puzzle! If you’ve struggled with organizing an essay before, or just need guidance to make your writing stand out, this class is for you! Through regular emails with the instructor, you will receive specific support with the pieces you need to improve your writing. For this tutoring session, you’ll send two original essays between January 30th and March 27th. Essays can be something you’re working on for a school assignment, works that you plan to enter into an essay contest, or focused on a topic of interest to you. For each submitted essay, Mrs. Leddy will give you feedback and ideas via email to strengthen the organization of your writing. Then, you’ll resubmit your revised essay for final feedback. MathWiZ Enrichment - Elementary (for advanced math students)

Continue the mathWiZ program through winter and spring! Catching students young and nurturing their curiosity helps in their academic excellence. The mathWiZ program trains the young minds to translate words into Math and helps develop problem-solving skills. During the sessions, students explore patterns in a systematic, engaging and fun way and apply concepts to build a strong Math foundation. Concepts are explored visually, verbally and symbolically enabling advanced math students to be active learners. This fun filled enrichment program builds confidence in students and gets them ready for math competitions like Math Masters and CML. The mathWiZ Enrichment program provides students with an opportunity to expand their mathematical knowledge which enables the students to investigate, analyze, infer, prognosticate and verify their problem-solving approach. The program pedagogy encourages students to ask effective questions, share unique approaches to the problems, investigate different ways of arriving at a solution and critically assess and present indigenous approach. In a collaborative environment, teachers inspire and encourage students to think logically and aid students in developing problem-solving skills. The program also fosters the spirit of competition and prepares advanced students for Math competitions like Math Masters, Junior High Math League, MathCounts and AMC 8. Fencing Grades 2-5 New and returning students invited! Fencing tournament season is upon us. Get prepped and primed for the Spring tournaments. New arm band levels for returning students, addition of assistant instructors as needed to help each student reach full potential, focus on strategy, focus on fine tuning and more! New students will learn fencing basics: advance, retreat, thrust, lunge etc. Returning students will work on: economy of motion, setup attacks, combination attacks and adding new moves to their skill set. All students will work toward arm-band advancement with the ultimate goal of reaching the ninth level black band! Parents can join the youth classes and get a great workout. Skateboard Camps Provided by 3rd Lair Skatepark Grades 1-8 3rd Lair Skateboard Camps are designed for all ages and abilities. We teach the basics of skateboarding as well as help more advanced individuals take their skating to the next level. Our professional instructors share their love of the sport in a fun and supportive environment designed to foster confidence and build skills. Skateboard Camps run from 9:00am to noon with complimentary open skate after camp until the park closes - a whole day of fun! Parents should plan to stay and supervise students who stay for open skate. We provide any equipment and pads you need free of charge. Our camps provide small group instruction based on skill level so everyone feels comfortable, supported and challenged. WISHES Registration Information It’s easy to register for WISHES classes online 24/7. Using your Visa /MasterCard/Discover, you can register immediately online at: www.ceregistration.wayzata.k12.mn.us Please note: Parents must register the child that is taking the class (child’s name must show on the roster). Please do not register yourself. Make sure to note at which school the class is being held.

WISHES registrations may not be sent or dropped off at your child’s school or Home Base site. They are not permitted to accept them.
