During the 2005 season Schaly became the winningest coach in the program’s history and he won the 400th game of his career in 2011. His players have received numerous post-season awards for their achievements on the field. Over the past 14 years, 70 Tomcats have been named All-PAC, 20 have received AllMideast region recognition and two Tomcats were named All-Americans. Tomcat baseball players have also excelled in the classroom, with three earning Academic All-America honors.

The Thiel College baseball program is under the direction of 15th year head coach Joe Schaly. Schaly took over a 2-20 program in September of 1999 and quickly managed to point the program in the right direction. During his thirteen years as the program’s head coach, Schaly and the Tomcats have won a regular-season Presidents’ Athletic

Schaly has experienced the game at all levels, from Division I to Division III, and from NCAA to NAIA. Prior to Thiel he was the head coach and assistant athletic director at Point Park College for six years. Point Park has a long history of success in NAIA baseball and during Schaly’s tenure the Pioneers won the conference/district four times, and each year Schaly was named Coach of the Year.

Kent State University. During his tenure at Marietta the Pioneers won two NCAA Division III National Championships and finished as national runners-up on two other occasions. Schaly earned his bachelor of arts degree in managerial economics from Marietta College in 1986. He continued his education at Kent State University and received his master’s degree in sports administration in 1989. Along with being the head coach of the baseball team, Schaly also serves on the NCAA Baseball Rules Committee and is the chair of the ABCA Rules Committee. Schaly resides in Beaver Falls with his wife, Lucy, and their two children: Hannah and Colin.

ASSISTANT COACHES Beau Smith Assistant Coach Beau Smith enters his first season as an assistant coach for the Tomcats. Smith comes to Thiel after serving as a volunteer assistant baseball coach with his almamater, the University of Mount Union, this past season. While with the Raiders, Smith coached the pitching staff, including Zach Carlino, the recipient of the Ohio Athletic Conference Kent Tekulve Pitcher of the Year. Smith helped lead the Raiders to their second-ever OAC championship and first since 1970. The Raiders also made their first-ever NCAA Regional appearance in 2013, falling to host Manchester (Ind.) 12-3 and then Illinois Wesleyan in the elimination game, 5-2. Smith had a successful playing career prior to becoming a coach, earning three varsity letters at Mount Union from 2010-12. In his three seasons as a pitcher for the Raiders he twice led the team in appearances and complete games, and was top three in innings pitched his senior season, a season in which he was honored as an academic All-OAC first-team selection.

Lynn Jones Assistant Coach After more than 20 years at the major league level as both a manager and player, Lynn Jones ’74 returns to his alma mater for his second season as an assistant coach. Jones, the second Tomcat to be drafted and the first to reach the major leagues, was drafted in the tenth round of the 1974 MLB draft by the Cincinnati Reds. He reached the big leagues with the Detroit Tigers on April 13, 1979, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in his debut in center field, a 5-4 loss to the Texas Rangers. He played for eight seasons, collecting 239 hits while playing for the Tigers and Royals, and went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple in six games in the 1985 World Series against St. Louis, helping Kansas City win their first World Series

championship. He began managing in 1990, becoming the first base coach for the Kansas City Royals. He spent the next nine seasons as the manager of several minor league clubs, compiling an overall record of 555630 (.468) while reaching the postseason twice, in 1995 and 1997 with the Kane County Cougars of the Midwest League, a Florida Marlins affiliate. Jones was particularly successful in his stint with the Cougars, as he is second all-time for managerial wins with 275 and was apart of the Marlins organization in ’97 when they won their first World Series. Jones was “called up” to the big leagues once again in 2001, joining the thenFlorida Marlins as their first base coach. A year later, he returned to the minor league level as the manager of the Macon Braves for the 2002 season before joining the Boston Red Sox in 2003. During his three seasons with the Red Sox, Jones coached the outfielders, was the base running coach and was the first base coach in 2004, when the Red Sox broke the “curse of the bambino” and won the World Series for the first time in 86 years. In 2006, Jones rejoined the team who drafted him out of Thiel in ’74, the Cincinnati Reds for the ’06 and ‘07 seasons as the outfield/base running roving instructor before spending three seasons with the Atlanta Braves in the same capacity.

Jim Patterson Assistant Coach Jim Patterson returns for his 15th season with the Thiel baseball program. Patterson is a 1960 graduate of John Carroll University and is a retired athletic director and coach from Badger High School. During his tenure at Badger, Patterson coach both the men’s and women’s basketball teams, track and field, softball and baseball. He also coached the Jamestown Redbirds for five years and the Greenville Merchants for four seasons in the Mercer/Crawford County AA League. While serving in the United States Army, Patterson played on an all-star team against the Korean national team.

He and his wife, Onalee, have been married 52 years and have four children and 10 grandchildren. His father, Red, is a member of the Thiel College Athletic Hall of Fame.

Eric Garrett Assistant Coach Eric Garrett ‘88 returns for his 14th season on Coach Schaly’s staff. Garrett was a four-year letterman and three-time All-PAC selection at shortstop for the Tomcats. Garrett was elected to the Thiel Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012. During his time at Thiel, Garrett held the career record for assists and played on the 1987 team which still holds the highest winning percentage (.778) for a single season in Tomcat baseball history. After graduation, Garrett went on to play in the Virginia/Maryland Independent League. Garrett is currently a captain with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department where he is in charge of the county’s K-9 unit. He and his wife, Barb, reside in Grove City.

Matt DeSalvo Assistant Coach Matt DeSalvo begins his first season as a volunteer assistant for the Tomcats. DeSalvo is a 2003 Marietta College graduate and holds the NCAA Division III record for career wins (53), strikeouts in a season (205), and strikeouts in a career (603.) After graduation, DeSalvo signed a free agent contract with the New York Yankees, making his major league debut on May 7, 2007 against Seattle Mariners. He collected his first Major League win six days later against the Mariners, as he went six and two-thirds inning, surrendering just two runs and seven hits while striking out two. DeSalvo bounced around to four different major league organizations over the next three seasons, eventually signing with the York Revolution of the Atlantic League, whom he helped lead to the league championship.

Thiel College

Athletics Facilities Thiel’s 24 NCAA Division III athletics programs — and the campus and Greenville communities in general — are served by a collection of on-campus facilities that include some of the finest small-college stadia in the region.

Opened in 2001, Alumni Stadium (above) serves as the on-campus home of Thiel football as well as the men’s and women’s soccer and lacrosse programs and in 2013 was retrofit with competition-level lights.

One of the newest facilities on campus, the Rissell-Schreyer Dome (above, below) is a seasonal, air-supported structure that the baseball team holds spring practice in.

Beeghly Gymnasium is located in the Rissell-Beeghly Gymnasia and serves as the home of Thiel’s volleyball and basketball programs.

The Paul Bush ‘66 Fitness Center is located in the upper level of the historic Rissell Gymnasium on what was once the College’s main basketball court. The facility is open to the entire campus community.

The baseball field at Tomcat Park was finished in time for the 2008 season and is home to Thiel’s nationally renowned baseball program. The field can comfortably accommodate several hundred fans and also features a spacious, elevated press box.

2014 Season Preview

GREENVILLE, Pa. - The 2014 Thiel College baseball team will look noticeably different than the 2013 squad that went to the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championship Tournament for the first time since 2009. The Tomcats have 12 first-year players on the roster, along with 19 returners, in attempt to replace the production they lost from the eight seniors that graduated.

“Overall, with the class we lost, we’re going to be young and inexperienced,” 15th-year head coach Joe Schaly explained. “I feel confident that at each position we have talent, and that this sophomore class is ready to carry the load. Our success is determined by the consistency of our young guys.” The pitching staff will return sophomores Matt Elko and Parker Meyers. Elko finished last year with a 5-2 record, a 4.67 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 34.2 innings while Meyers went 2-2 with a team-high three saves in 14 appearances. “Elko has been our best starter since the start of the offseason,” Schaly stated. “He and Meyers need to step up to pick up the slack left by Nick Rossmiller and Cody Northcott’s departure.” Sophomores Pat Duncan, Jaden Nozicka and Riley Schwertz join Elko and Meyers as a few of the top returners on the pitching staff. Duncan made nine appearances and one start as a freshman, while Nozicka made two starts in seven appearances after his freshman season was cut short due to injury. Schwertz set a Thiel single-season record last year by appearing in 17 games, ending his freshman campaign with two saves in 22.2 innings pitched. “Schwertz may move to the front end this year, unlike last season when he was coming out of the bullpen mostly,” Schaly said. “Jaden made it into the rotation last year as a freshman but a hip injury in March 2013 limited him from that point forward.” Also vying for time on the mound, either as starting pitchers or relievers, will be junior Kyle Mohr, sophomore Alex Yoder and freshmen Kevin Forrester, Patrick Fitzpatrick, and Jared Hensler. In the outfield, senior captain Nick Schiavoni returns after receiving honorable mention All-PAC laurels last season. Schiavoni started all 42 games for the Tomcats in 2013, hitting .321 with 13 doubles and 23 RBIs. “Nick is our only starter back in the outfield,” Schaly remarked. “We expect him to be one of our most consistent guys in our lineup, day in and day out.”

Joining Schiavoni in the outfield is junior Trent Mosely. Mosely saw considerable action at third base last season, and will move to one of the corner outfield positions after hitting four home runs, two triples and six doubles as a sophomore. The third starter in the outfield has yet to be determined, but Schaly expects sophomores Sam Passafiume, Bryan Mitchell, Brandon Gelet and freshman Austin Van Hoy to compete for playing time and provide depth for the Blue and Gold. At first base, sophomore Trent Smith will look to begin the season as an everyday starter after splitting time with Rossmiller last season. Smith played in 32 games, notching 33 hits in 105 plate appearances, while making just one error in the field. He could also see time at third base. Backing up Smith at first is Passafiume and senior Michael Guarascio. At shortstop, the Tomcats return honorable mention All-PAC honoree Cody Trinch. Trinch started 41 of the team’s 42 games at shortstop, batting .309. He smacked 47 hits, four of which were for extra bases, and scored 13 runs while driving in 11. In the field, he recorded a team-best 117 assists and turned 22 double plays. “Trinch has started almost every game at shortstop since coming to Thiel,” said Schaly. “He has improved a lot defensively from last year to this year and is a possible leadoff hitter for us.” Joining Trinch in the infield will be sophomores Josh Doody and Brian Genco. Doody appeared in just seven games a year ago but can play both second base and catcher, while Genco is capable of playing both middle infield positions as well as third base. “(Doody) is going to see a lot of time at second base and hit in the middle of the lineup,” Schaly stated. “Genco is going to start at third. He came to Thiel as an outfielder, and his offense has improved to the point we expect him to play everyday.” Along with Doody seeing some time at catcher, Thiel will rely on returning honorable mention All-PAC honoree, sophomore Dan Koller behind the dish. Koller hit .266 while throwing out 23-of-44 would-be base stealers. The 44 stolen base attempts against were the second most in the PAC, and his 21 stolen bases against were the second lowest total in the conference. “With Koller and Doody, we’ve got two very good catchers,” Schaly said. “They both work extremely hard, and we can go with either of them and be very strong behind the plate.” The coaching staff for Thiel welcomes several new faces in 2014. Beau Smith was added as a full-time assistant coach, and Matt DeSalvo and Bill Patterson were added as volunteer assistant coaches. Smith comes to Thiel by way of Mount Union, where he played for four years and was a student assistant coach last season. DeSalvo holds the NCAA Division III record for career wins (53) and strikeouts in a career (603) and parlayed that success into a stint at the major league level with the New York Yankees. Patterson comes to the Tomcats by way of Commodore Perry High School, where he coached baseball for five years. “There aren’t many DIII coaching staffs in the country that have the collection of knowledge that this group has,” Schaly quipped. The Tomcats will begin their 2014 season by traveling to Fort Meyers, Fla. to take part in the Gene Cusic Classic over spring break (March 2-8). The Tomcats will return home on March 14 for their home opener against John Carroll University. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 2 p.m.

The first New Academic Building at Thiel in over 40 Years!

In May of 2013, Thiel College broke ground on the Pedas Communication Center, a $6.5 million, 20,000 square feet, state-of-the-art communication facility housing the Department of Communication, radio and television broadcasting facilities, and an open, interactive, technology-rich creative space for students and faculty from all disciplines. PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Comprised of 10 select private colleges – Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington and Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College – the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC expanded to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly a NCAA Division III independent. Saint Vincent College, a NAIA member, joined the conference as it began provisional membership status in NCAA Division III in 2006-07. Another NAIA member, Geneva College, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play as it started NCAA Division III provisional membership in 2007-08. Chatham College (now University) became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007-08. In 2012, the PAC voted to add Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University as affiliate members in the sport of football beginning in 2014. The PAC annually crowns champions and awards All-conference status in all 19 league sports. Head coaches select all-PAC squads for all team sports, while in individual sports such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Washington & Jefferson men and Grove City women captured the 2012-13 trophies. True to its mission, the PAC has produced numerous Academic All-Americans and NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the league named 853 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating athletes who attain a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.

Washington & Jefferson Men, Grove City Women Capture 2012-13 PAC All-Sports Trophies GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men and Grove City College women each captured the 2012-13 PAC All-Sports Trophies. The all-sports trophies are awarded annually to the schools which perform the best across the board in league competition.
