Intravenous (IV) Iron Infusions

Key Purpose / Benefit IV Ferric carboxymaltose (Ferinject®) is a safe and effective treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in general practice which: is indicated for the correction of iron deficiency anaemia produces an increase in haemoglobin within 2 weeks may reduce the need for a blood transfusion

Service Description Procedure relates to adults who require IV Ferinject® for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia.

Eligibility criteria Enrolled and funded in a General Practice within BOP DHB Aged 14 years and over Meet PHARMAC special authority criteria for funded Ferric carboxymaltose (Ferinject®) AND Meets one of the following equitable access criteria: Community Services Card holder High Needs (Māori, Pacific, or Quintile 5) OR Patient is already receiving IV iron infusion by Medical Day Stay Unit (MDSU)

Exclusions Patients will not be eligible for funding if they meet one of the following exclusion criteria: ACC funded treatment Previous adverse reaction to IV iron

Claim Process All PMS’s Claim using the Halcyon form, instructions on “How to Access Halcyon” from all Practice Management Systems are under H in this PHO Guide. See below a guide to completion of the fields on the Halcyon Iron Infusion claim form.

Medtech, MyPractice, Indici and Profile practices An invoice will automatically be created in your PMS and a claim will be electronically sent to the PHO on completion of the Halcyon form. Houston practices An invoice will need to be manually created in your PMS for internal reconciliation purposes. A claim will be electronically sent to the PHO on completion of the Halcyon form.

Payment $150 (incl. GST) per claim WBOP PHO makes payments monthly in arrears following receipt of a claim

Repeat infusions will require a claim for each Ferinject® Infusion administered successfully. Infusion need to be within the allowed 3-month validity timeframe of each Special Authority Ferinject® application. There is no limit to the number of Iron Infusion claims per patient. The patient must meet the eligibility criteria at the time of each infusion. Please Note: No patient co-payment is to be charged
