L Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) Key purpose / benefit To provide free access for eligible women to LARC services through the General Practice networks.
Service description To deliver wāhine-centred contraception services in settings accessible and convenient to the target population. This service specification covers the following: 1. Client-centred contraceptive counselling (consultations) providing wāhine with accurate and unbiased contraception information to support informed decisionmaking, 2. Access to their chosen contraception method, including the insertion and removal of LARC, 3. All services should be delivered at no cost to the wāhine. Please note the following service definitions: - LARC refers only to Jadelle and IUS/IUD (not Depo) - Contraception consultation is for the initial advice only irrespective of outcome (LARC or not) but not for ongoing delivery of chosen method (e.g. not for 3monthly depo injections or COCP/POP prescriptions) NB: For the EBPHA practices that have the under 26 yr old Sexual Health funding the LARC project funding is to be used first (to gain accurate view of demand) and anyone not eligible for the LARC programme can be claimed under the EBPHA-funded programme (including ongoing depo/COCP)
Programme requirements The package can be provided by BOPDHB certified General Practitioners and/or registered nurses. The following section outlines this training and certification process. BOPDHB is coordinating all provider training for Practitioners who have not previously undertaken formal training in the provision of these services (i.e. General Practitioners, Nurse Practitioners and Registered Nurses within both General Practice and School-based Health Service settings). They are working in collaboration with the contracted training providers to meet training needs. It is expected that, as training opportunities are taken up, this will evolve predominantly into a Nurse-led service. Practitioners, who are currently providing the service within their General Practice and want to offer services to eligible women under this service initiative, are required to gain certification as an existing provider.
