LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

“Anyone who keeps learning stays young” was one of Henry Ford’s great quotes. It certainly applies here at Button Factory Arts. We provide two floors of authentic and creative programming: gallery exhibitions, innovative art classes, workshops, professional development for artists, and rehearsal space. We pride ourselves on maintaining an inclusive environment, open to artists, arts organizations and art appreciators from all backgrounds, cultures, and levels of experience. We start another fall season with new programs and challenges. When our facility was first built as a button factory, a small cache of workers created buttons from shells and nuts. It was a small successful industry for many years. In 2016 we have over 400 members and over 24,000 visitors annually. And because of that we currently are in need some structural upgrades to our facility. In some ways, we are victims of our own success. The City of Waterloo has greatly supported us here at the button factory for over 20 years and we are very grateful for their long-standing support in our organization and our facility. So we will be closed to the public for most of the month of September while upgrades are implemented. Staff will continue to work behind the scenes and answer the phones, and keep up with correspondence, so you may continue to register for fall programming and renew memberships and ask questions. Please be patient with us, as we may be dealing with logistical issues periodically that will occur over this time. We plan to resume our regular programming and operations at the beginning of October. As a non-profit we are always struggling on a bare-bones budget and limited capacity. But we manage all our events, programing and the facility with only 5 dedicated staff. They are dedicated to keeping our arts community a rich and vibrant community. Watch for a whole range of new creative programming and programs for the whole family! This fall we continue with our outreach program on the Grand River Transit Ixpress buses with Art That Moves You, our Annual Juried Show in October and our annual Arts Market in November. Awaken to new growth in ourselves this fall. Come out and explore, create, play in all kinds of media, attend a gallery opening, come to a professional development lecture, meet new members and become inspired by all the creative opportunities that Button Factory Arts offers this season. -Heather Franklin Executive Director 5
