Cover art: Jane Holbrook is originally from Halifax, Jane moved to Waterloo in 1988. She has been a member of Button Factory Arts for several years attending life drawing classes and showing her work in juried and members’ shows. Her principle interest is in depicting the human form.

about us Button Factory Arts is a unique art centre that has been serving the community for 20 years. We provide two floors of authentic and creative programming, gallery exhibitions, innovative art classes, workshops, professional development for artists. We pride ourselves on maintaining an inclusive environment, open to artists and art appreciators from all backgrounds, cultures and levels of experience. Whether you’re an emerging or experienced artist, a beginner or simply curious there is something for everyone here!

Drawing 16-200 urban Sketching

Wednesdays, July 13th– Aug. 3rd 6:15-8:15pm (4 Weeks) $78 members/ $90 non-members Registration Deadline: July 6th Urban Sketching is both a noun and a verb. The term describes a recent global community of professional, amateur and beginning artists who gather and share sketches created in streets, markets and at gatherings to celebrate the urban culture around the globe. Urban sketching is also about the sensual experience of a writing instrument across paper, in order to create a sketchbook full of memories. Urban sketching is a different way to experience our city. Remember, being loose means never needing to use an eraser!

This class is open to anyone interested in learning to draw: all levels, all welcome. We will have demonstrations, daily lectures, and individual drawing critiques from still lives.

This is a continuation from Drawing 16-109 but not mandatory to take. This class is open to anyone interested in learning to draw: all levels, all welcome. We will have demonstrations, daily lectures, and individual drawing from live models.

painting 16-203 Intro to painting Techniques 1: Building and Stretching Canvas Laura Snider Wednesday, July 13th 2- 4pm (workshop) $32 members/ $37 non-members

Registration Deadline: July 6th

This workshop will teach you to build your own canvas from the wood frame up. We will look at building basic canvases from nailing together the supports, stretching the canvas, and gessoing the canvas. Learn tips and techniques to both save money by stretching your own canvases while also creating custom sizes. Some supplies included: $25 for up to a 4x4 foot canvas

16-204 Intro to painting Techniques 2: Colour Mixing & The Colour Wheel Laura Snider Wednesday, July 20th 2-4pm (workshop) $32 members/ $37 non-members

Registration Deadline: July 13th

This introductory class will look at the colour wheel, colour mixing, and colour theory. We will delve into why and how colours work together; tones, hues, tints, and pigments; using acrylic paint we will explore additive colour models and create basic reference charts. This workshop will also assist in learning how to select and purchase paints for future use. Paint Supplies and brushes included for use (there is a $15 supply fee for this workshop)

16-205 Intro to painting Techniques 3: Intro to Acrylic painting Laura Snider Wednesday, July 27th 2-4pm (workshop) $32 members/ $37 non-members

Registration Deadline: July 20th

Using the skills you have learned in Intro to Painting Techniques 1&2, learn how to begin an acrylic painting; based from a drawing or photograph you bring to class. Paint supplies not included, but brushes and prep-drawing materials are available for use.

If you are looking for an introductory course in acrylics this is the course for you, but all are welcome. There will be an emphasis on the nature and use of the medium and technique development. Come learn how to build volume and detail, mix colours, and develop mood in your work by painting a subject of your own choice in consultation with Atena. 5


Jewelry workshops 16-209 Essential Metal Clay Artistry Intro (Fine Jewelry Making) georgina branch Saturday, July 9th 10am-5pm (workshop) $68 members/ $79 non-members + $85 supply fee Registration Deadline: July 1st Come out to explore a great new and exciting way to create fine jewelry for yourself, friends and family! Art clay metal is a shape-able, flexible medium that simplifies the process and helps you discover your inner artist! You will be amazed at the precious metal silver pieces you will make and take home with you after this one day workshop! All 99% silver! For the beginner, or great basics refresher.

Saturday, July 16th 1-3pm & July 23rd (2 part workshop) $68 members/ $79 non-members + $85 supply fee Registration Deadline: July 9th Design & Create 1-3 pieces of silver jewelry facilitated by the instructor. Projects will be drawn and designed in the first workshop and cleared with the instructor to verify suitability for the student’s experience level. The second workshop will facilitate the production of the piece in silver. An $85 supply fee will include silver metal clay and tools. A selection of fire-able stones, and assorted findings will also be available for sale according to the needs of the students projects.

Saturday, Aug. 20th 1-3pm (workshop) Art pickup: Tues. Aug. 30th between 10-5pm $25 members/ $29 non-members Registration Deadline: Aug. 12th Come & learn fused glass techniques to make beautiful multicoloured glassworks. In this workshop we will be learning to create a variety of birds and owls, as well as pendants and pins. Ages 14+ are welcome to attend. If you would like to make extra pendants or pins, they are $5 each. Prices are per person and include materials, as well as kiln firing.

Join Michele in a series of journaling activities to help integrate the left and right sides of the brain, stimulate the imagination and harness creative joy as we explore exercises to overcome “writer’s / artist’s block”, strengthen intuition, heal body, mind and soul and have fun. Activities include writing, line-making and non-dominant hand activities.

Many of us dream about creating art, but struggle at getting into the flow. Come to this workshop, if you would like to experience a real creative flow. Learn how to get into it and continue creating every day. It is all about the process and having fun, without focusing on a final product. Art journaling is one of the best ways of starting the creative journey and getting rid of the unrealistic expectations of your inner critic.

16-212 TrI-pride Family art Day ArT IS For EvErYBoDY: vinyl Sticker Making Keith Haring Sunday May 29th, 11:30am-1:30pm (workshop) Fee: Pay What You Can! Registration Deadline: May 27th Keith Haring was one of the most influential visual artists of the late 20th century. His bold, cartoon-like images are indelible icons of American art and popular culture. Haring particularly devoted himself to messages of social justice and change. He was tireless in his work with children of all ages and backgrounds recognizing that early exposure to artwork and creative expression goes a long way in opening up new modes of viewing the world. In this workshop an introduction on Keith Haring’s life and work will be provided. Children and families will learn how to create vinyl stickers and magnets in this symbolic and colourful style. 7
