WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

BLACKSMITHS’

COMPETITION JULY 3-7, 2013

Entries close Wednesday, May 1, 2013

The World Championship Blacksmiths’ Competition invites you to join us for the 34th Annual Championships, held during the Calgary Stampede – The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth 2013 marks a dramatic change in the competition’s prize list and format. In order to facilitate Stampede Park construction, our first day of competition will be held at Heritage Park. The judges clinic will focus on the effective use of therapeutic barshoes and will be followed by a double elimination class. This class will select 15 competitors who will compete in the Heartbar Eagle Eye class on Sunday morning for the last shot at points to make the TOP TEN. The Two Man class now requires one competitor to shoe one foot and build a specimen, with a striker, in sixty minutes. There are NO points awarded to the strikers. Points for placing for both the shod foot and the specimen will be awarded individually. The Four Man Team Draft Horse class is no longer a point class; however, first place now pays $10,000 to the winning team. It is NOT mandatory as a paid competitor to compete in this class; however, if you do, then your team MUST be identified at the

time of entry (Deadline: May 1, 2013). After the selection of the TOP TEN on Sunday morning, the competitors face a new challenge in that all accumulated points will be removed and they will start the semi-final and final with zero points going forward. These changes are designed to create a new dynamic format to produce the best of the best in the most challenging championship. Entries are limited to sixty competitors. All past champions and sponsored entries from WCBC sponsors have priority, with the remaining spots open to national champions, regional champions or corporate sponsored entries. The potential exists for entry into the Four Man Team Draft Horse class outside of the competitor pool and space will be dictated after entry deadline is closed. Final determination of entries will be made by the Calgary Stampede and/ or the WCBC committee.

The WCBC is excited to welcome two accomplished blacksmiths to judge this years competition.

James Blurton - Wales and Nathan Powell - Canada

CLASS 60/70

The Cyril Standen Signature Class 60 minutes

Our two man class is named after the founder of one of our long-time sponsors. Standen’s was established in the early 1920’s by a young entrepreneur, Cyril Standen, who began the firm by forging hot steel into his very first product, a cowboy boot insert. Standen’s has since grown into a North American leader in its field. A strong commitment to its workers has allowed them to remain competitive even in tough times. Their belief in team work and support of our industry makes them a natural fit to promote our two man class.

Two person teams will shoe a foot of a light draft horse using appropriate barstock provided. Shoe to be ¾ fullered with toe clips drawn from masselottes. The team must also forge a tool and fullered caulk and wedged shoe with hammer drawn clips using 15mm square stock provided. (There are NO points awarded to the strikers.)

CLASS 80

Eagle Eye Heartbar 25 minutes

The fifteen competitors’ selected from the Heritage Park Eliminator Classic will forge a ž fullered heartbar shoe to fit a foot model provided. Appropriate barstock selection provided. Suitable number of nail holes to be punched for Mustad MX60.

CLASS 110

Four Man Team Draft Horseshoeing 120 minutes

This class is sponsored by Anderson Ranch and combines big fires, big horses and national pride in an exciting format that showcases all of our traditions in a fast and furious display of blacksmithing. The teamwork needed to win this class is representative of the reality of the trade. Time immemorial fathers and sons, masters and apprentices have passed these timehonoured techniques into real life practice, advancing the profession one hammer blow at a time. When you add time limits, big prizing and personal pride into the equation, the pressure and performance result in the culmination of excellence that has been the global standard set by the Calgary Stampede World Championship Blacksmiths’ Competition. Example:

Specs: 3/4 fullered flat shoes toe clips front and hind to be hammer drawn. Shoes to have definite inside and outside branches. Barstock: 13mm x 32mm flat. Nail: Size of choice.

Metal Art Showcase This year the Metal Art Showcase will consist of a Potluck Class and a Traditional Class. There will not be a Non-traditional Class. In the Potluck Class artists will choose steel from a stockpile of WCBC steel. They have ninety minutes to create a piece of art using WCBC equipment and tools the artist supplies. Unlimited strikers are allowed but strikers will not be eligible for prizes. There will be a cap of 20 Potluck artists. All artwork will become the property of the WCBC. Judges will choose the top five entries for the live auction immediately following the Potluck Class. Ninety per cent of the auction proceeds of each piece will go to the competitor. The deadline for entries for the Traditional Class is May 1, 2013. Entries in the Traditional Class will only be judged if traditional blacksmithing techniques are used. Artists will set a value to their piece at the time of entry. All artwork becomes the property of the WCBC. Judges will choose the top five pieces for the live auction after the Potluck Class. Artists whose pieces have been chosen for the live auction will receive ninety per cent of the sale price. Artists may bid on their own pieces. Artists whose pieces were not chosen for the live auction can purchase their piece from the WCBC for 10 per cent of the preset value.

Maximum bid increment during the live auction will be $100. Shipping to the Calgary Stampede will be paid by the competitor. Shipping from the Calgary Stampede will be paid by the WCBC for artwork purchased by any person not affiliated with the WCBC or a WCBC competitor. The World Champion Metal Artist will be determined by the highest sale price of all ten pieces chosen for the live auction. The World Champion Metal Artist will receive $2,000 and a championship buckle. There will also be a $500 prize for Judges’ choice in the Traditional Class and the Potluck Class.
