Message from the President and CEO of the Nevada Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Publisher of the Women In Power Business Magazine© Women’s Chamber update: On March 17, 2020 our world came to a grinding halt due to the Coronavirus. This year the chamber celebrates two events: Their 2020 quarterly issue of (WIPBM) Women In Power Business Magazine© and their eighteenth-year anniversary as the Nevada State Women’s State Chamber of Commerce in Nevada’s history. The Women’s Chamber was unable to hand out the magazine or host the Women’s Hall of Fame event on March 27, 2020 as that was canceled. Here we are in September with no event or magazine since that time, outside of our WeeklyNewsBriefs© keeping everyone up-to-date with COVID-19 and our daily lives. We will be mailing the WIPBM to all Top Ten Women in the Women In Power Business Magazine© and to all the Nevada Women’s Hall of Fame Inductees to be honored in March 2021. Although our WIPBM Women In Power Business Magazine© never reached our event guests and our inductees, this issue included a National cover story of Susan Au Allen, founder and National Headquarters CEO and National President of the United States Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce and Education Foundation (USPAACC) with a group of business and civic leaders in Washington, DC and California. This issue also included The Top 10 women in Nevada: Page Candee, President of public relations 10a Media and is also the founder of Dress for Success, Nancy Houssels, CoFounder & Board Co-Chair, Nevada Ballet Theatre, Shellie Hunt, President and Chief Executive Officer, Women of Global Change, Terri Janison, President & CEO Grant A Gift Autism Foundation, Paula Lawrence, Executive Director, Dress for Success Southern Nevada, Marta Meana, Ph.D. President of UNLV, Judge Nancy Allf, Eighth Judicial District Court, Sharry Quillin, CFO, Quillin Adverting, Public Relations & Social Media, Kyle B. Keren Wojtowicz As a financial advisor with Edward Jones, my primary goal is to help individual investors develop an investment strategy geared toward their unique, long-term goals. We have built our business by treating our clients as we would want to be treated, a simple idea that still makes sense in today’s complex marketplace. One-size-fits-all may be fine for some investors, but we believe investments should be tailored to your needs and not generically based on guidelines for someone your age or at your stage of life. Whether your goals include preparing for or living in retirement, paying for education, planning for the unexpected or creating an estate or inheritance, we can offer investment solutions tailored to all your financial goals. NSHE Board of Regents Selects New UNLV President Board of Regents appointed Dr. Keith Whitfield as UNLV’s 11th permanent president; he will begin the position August 24, 2020 The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents voted to appoint Dr. Keith Whitfield as UNLV’s new president. He becomes UNLV’s 11th permanent president and the first Black president in the university’s 63-year history. Dr. Whitfield, currently the provost and senior vice president of academic affairs and a professor of psychology at Wayne State University in Detroit, will begin Aug. 24 and serve a four-year contract. Prior to his time at Wayne State University, Whitfield was vice provost for academic affairs at Duke University and held appointments as professor in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, research professor in the Department of Geriatric Medicine at Duke University Medical Center, and senior fellow at the Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development. He also was the co-director of the Center on Biobehavioral Health Disparities Research. “Dr. Whitfield is a highly respected educator, researcher, and administrator. His experience boosting student success at Wayne State University will serve UNLV well. And his knowledge and understanding of leading a diverse student population – Wayne State University’s student population mirrors UNLV in terms of diversity – affords him the familiarity to tackle UNLV’s unique challenges head on,” said NSHE chancellor Thom Reilly. “I am confident Dr. Whitfield is the right person to lead the university at this time.” As provost of Wayne State University, Whitfield is responsible for faculty hiring, promotion and tenure, and budget and policies for faculty and staff. He is also responsible for student affairs, including student success, curriculum, housing and other student related auxiliaries. Under his leadership, the university achieved remarkable gains in its graduation rate, increased overall enrollment, launched an innovation and entrepreneurship hub, and strengthened multiple business and philanthropic relationships. An active administrator and researcher, Whitfield has authored or co-authored over 200 publications and has earned funding from the National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Aging (NIA), and the National Science Foundation. His current research focuses on the relationship between stress and longevity in African American families. He’s a member of the NIA’s National Advisory Council on Aging. “This is truly, truly an honor. UNLV is a university that I have great respect for, and to be able to be a part of that is something I can’t express in words,” said Dr. Whitfield in his remarks to the Board of Regents following his appointment. “I’m going to make sure you see the kind of stewardship and momentum-building that you’ve seen from Marta Meana, and I’ll continue to lead this university to greatness.” Dr. Whitfield was one of four finalists who interviewed with UNLV students, faculty, employees, and community members since Monday. The ad hoc UNLV President Search Committee, made up of 29 members, including members of the Board of Regents, UNLV faculty, classified staff, students, and community stakeholders, recommended Dr. Whitfield for the job on Wednesday. “Dr. Whitfield is committed to and understands UNLV’s mission as a research institution and its relationship to Las Vegas and Nevada,” said Board of Regents Chair Mark Doubrava. “His breadth of experience shows he has excellent management skills and is admired by students and faculty alike.” The search committee used in-person interviews and live-stream technology to ensure an inclusive and transparent search process, while conducting the search in consideration for the health and well-being of all those involved. “I want to thank everyone involved in the search, especially UNLV’s students, faculty, staff and community members who participated in-person and virtually,” said Regent Trevor Hayes, who chaired the ad hoc UNLV President Search Committee. “Chancellor Reilly and the hiring firm, Wheless Search and Consulting, gave us four outstanding candidates to choose from, and I believe the committee made an excellent decision in recommending Dr. Whitfield to be UNLV’s next president.” The son of a U.S. Air Force Lt. Colonel, Whitfield received a bachelor’s in psychology from the College of Santa Fe and master’s and Ph.D. degrees in life span Developmental Psychology from Texas Tech University and did post-doctoral work in quantitative genetics at the University of Colorado, Boulder. 8 Weekly News Brief

Election Overview The 2020 general election, which will be held on Tuesday, November 3, will be a “hybrid” election. All active registered voters will be sent a ballot in the mail, but voters can choose to vote in person instead of casting a mail ballot if they want to. The decision of how to vote will be up to each individual voter. No voter will be forced to vote using a method with which they are not comfortable. For background on how the 2020 general election became a “hybrid” election, you may wish to review Assembly Bill 4 from the 32nd Special Session of the Nevada Legislature. This bill mandates that when there is a declared state of emergency by either the Governor or Legislature, the election becomes what is known as an “affected election.” For an affected election, all active registered voters are sent a blank ballot in the mail. Affected elections also must have a minimum number of in-person polling places to accommodate voters who want to vote in person. The majority of the changes in Assembly Bill 4 are not permanent, meaning future elections that are not designated as affected elections will be held pursuant to existing state election laws. Voting Your Mail Ballot Ballots will be mailed out in late September or early October. The specific date will vary by county. This webpage will be updated with ballot mailing dates once they are finalized by the counties. If you have not received your ballot in the mail within a week of your county’s ballot mailing date, you should contact your county election office to notify them of the problem. County election office contact information can be found here. Ballots will be mailed to the voter registration mailing address on file with your county election office and cannot be forwarded by the Post Office. This means it is extremely important that your voter registration mailing address be current. All voters, especially voters who have recently moved or have not voted in a while, are highly encouraged to check their voter registration status well in advance of Election Day. To check your voter registration status, visit www.RegisterToVoteNV.gov and click on «View My Existing Voter Registration.» If you need to register to vote or make a change to your voter registration information, you can also do so online at www.RegisterToVoteNV.gov. Ballots can be voted and returned immediately once they are received. You do not have to wait until a certain date closer to Election Day to vote your mail ballot. Voters have two options to return a mail ballot: 1. Ballots can be returned by mail using the provided postage prepaid ballot return envelope. In order to be counted, ballots returned by mail must be postmarked no later than November 3. Ballots that are given to a mail carrier or deposited in a Post Office receptacle prior to the last posted pickup time will have their ballot postmarked that same day. 2. Ballots can be returned in person at a ballot drop-off location. Ballots returned at a drop-off location must be dropped off prior to 7:00 pm on November 3. All counties will have at least one ballot drop-off location. A list of all ballot 10 Weekly News Brief
drop-off locations will be included on this webpage once election plans are finalized by the counties. Regardless of how a mail ballot is returned, it must be returned in the provided ballot return envelope. Ballots returned in any other envelope will not be counted. If needed, a replacement ballot return envelope can be obtained from your county election office. Only one ballot should be returned per ballot return envelope. If a ballot return envelope contains more than one ballot, none of the ballots will be counted. Lastly, all ballot return envelopes must be signed by the voter. This signature is used to confirm the voter’s identity, so if your ballot return envelope is not signed your ballot will not be counted. Voting in Person Even though all active registered voters will receive a blank ballot in the mail for the 2020 general election, voters can choose to vote in person at a polling place instead of voting by mail. Voter who choose to vote in person will have two options: 1. Early Voting - Early voting begins on Saturday, October 17 and runs through Friday, October 30. Days and hours of operation vary by county. A list of early voting polling places will be included on this webpage once election plans are finalized by the counties. In order to avoid lines on Election Day, all voters who wish to vote in person are encouraged to vote early. 2. Election Day - Polling locations open at 7:00 am on Election Day and remain open until 7:00 pm. As long as you are in line by 7:00 pm, you will be allowed to vote. A list of Election Day polling places will be included on this webpage once election plans are finalized by the counties. While we will be using the touch-screen voting machines for the 2020 general election, the polling place setup will be different than prior elections. All polling places will be set up to allow for social distancing, and plastic barriers will exist between election workers and voters. Frequently touched hard surfaces, including the voting machines, will be sanitized on a regular basis, and hand sanitizer will be available to all voters. Pursuant to the Governor’s emergency directive, all voters are highly encouraged to wear a mask to the polling place. If you refuse to wear a mask, you may be provided with an alternative voting method. The ability to operate in-person polling locations depends on the availability of poll workers. Many regular poll workers cannot work this election because of the risk associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. This means the counties need new poll workers, both for early voting and on Election Day. Poll workers are paid, and it is very rewarding work. To learn more about become a poll worker, please click here. September 17-30, 2020
The 2020 United States presidential election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, 2020. It will be the 59th quadrennial presidential election. Voters will select presidential electors who in turn will vote on December 14, 2020, to either elect a new president and vice president or reelect the incumbents Donald Trump and Mike Pence respectively. The series of presidential primary elections and caucuses were held from February to August 2020. This nominating process is an indirect election, where voters cast ballots selecting a slate of delegates to a political party’s nominating convention, who then, in turn, elect their party’s nominees for president and vice president.

Incumbent president Trump secured the Republican nomination without any serious opposition alongside incumbent vice president Pence. Former vice president Joe Biden secured the Democratic nomination over his closest rival, Senator Bernie Sanders, in a competitive primary which featured the largest field of presidential candidates for any political party in the modern era of American politics. On August 11, 2020, Biden announced that his running mate would be Senator Kamala Harris, making her the first African-American, the first Asian-American, and the third female vice presidential nominee on a major party ticket. Jo Jorgensen secured the Libertarian nomination alongside her running mate Spike Cohen, and Howie Hawkins secured the Green Party nomination alongside his running mate Angela Nicole Walker.
