The Nevada Women's Hall of Fame is an American institution created in 2005 by June L. Beland in Las Vegas, Nevada. The mission of the Nevada Women’s Hall of Fame is "to honor women, whose contributions to the arts, athletics, business, education, government, the humanities, philanthropy and science, have been the greatest value for the development of their state." The Nevada Women's Hall of Fame inducts distinguished women through a rigorous honors selection process involving representatives of the Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Nevada through its Annual International ATHENA Awards through areas of expertise. Inductees are selected on the basis of the changes they created that affect the social, economic or cultural aspects of society; the significant local, state national or global impact and results of change due to their achievement; and the enduring value of their achievements or changes within their communities. The Nevada Women’s Hall of Fame is hosted by founder June L. Beland, Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Nevada© since 2005, when the organization held the first ATHENA International Awards. The Nevada Women’s Hall of Fame office is through the Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Nevada.

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo
Born in Japan in a military family, Governor Joe Lombardo spent his childhood growing up across the world, until his father was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base and his family put down roots in Las Vegas. Governor Lombardo attended Rancho High School in North Las Vegas, before going on to attend the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree. After graduating, he served in the United States Army and in the Nevada National Guard. Following his military service, Governor Lombardo joined the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), where he quickly rose through the ranks and served on nearly every level of LVMPD, from detective to assistant sheriff. While serving at LVMPD, Governor Lombardo earned his Master of Science in Crisis Management from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2006. After 26 years on the force, Governor Lombardo was elected as Sheriff of Clark County in 2014 and re-elected in 2018. As the sheriff of Nevada’s largest county, he oversaw a $1.3 billion dollar budget, 6,000 employees, and LVMPD’s efforts to protect millions of Clark County residents and visitors each day. Governor Lombardo was elected as the 31st Governor of Nevada in November 2022 and sworn into office in January 2023. Governor Lombardo is focused on diversifying and revitalizing Nevada’s economy, restoring law and order in communities across the state, and bringing excellence, school choice, and accountability to Nevada’s education system. More important to him than anything, Governor Lombardo is a devoted husband to First Lady Donna Lombardo, a dedicated father to his daughter Morgan, stepdaughter Lacey, stepson Jackson, and a grandfather to his 1-year-old grandson Teddy.

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) is pleased to announce the three finalists who have reached the final rounds of consideration for the vacant NSHE Chancellor position. The search for the next chancellor has been rigorous and extensive, and these three finalists have emerged as top contenders for this prestigious role. The finalists are Charles Ansell, M.S., Lawrence M. Drake II, Ph.D., and Kathleen M. Marshall, J.D. Charles Ansell, M.S., currently serves as the vice president for research, policy, and advocacy at Complete College America. With a strong background in higher education and policy, Ansell has been a relentless advocate for favorable policy and legislation, resulting in significant increases in graduation rates and state appropriations. His expertise in collaboration and strategic vision makes him a compelling candidate for the Chancellor position. Dr. Lawrence M. Drake II, Ph.D., is the current interim president and dean of the college of business and entrepreneurship at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida. With a wealth of leadership experience, including serving as the president/CEO of The Executive Leadership Council and as a division president/CEO at The Coca-Cola Company, Drake brings a unique perspective to the table. His accomplishments in improving retention rates and establishing partnerships demonstrate some of the many capabilities in his career of expanding access and opportunities to higher education.
Charles Ansell, M.S.
Kathleen M. Marshall, J.D., has an extensive background in politics, law and education. Currently serving as the executive director of the Nevada School Choice Partnership, Marshall has been instrumental in advancing educational opportunities and access across the state. Marshall is a former Lieutenant Governor, Treasurer and Senior Deputy Attorney General for the state of Nevada. Her expertise in educational policy and her dedication to equity and diversity make her a strong candidate for the chancellor position. “Each of the finalists brings a high caliber of skills and assets that would support NSHE across the state,” said Joe Arrascada, vice chair of Nevada System of Higher Education’s Board of Regents. “Their diverse backgrounds and accomplishments demonstrate their commitment to educational excellence and their ability to lead and inspire change. We are confident that any one of them would be a valuable asset to NSHE, contributing to the advancement of higher education in Nevada and the success of our students.”

The search for the next chancellor will continue with open forums and interviews with each finalist on June 27-28. On June 29, 2023, during the next NSHE Chancellor Search Committee meeting, Chair Joseph C. Arrascada and representatives of The Bryan Group, a search firm hired to assist in finding the next chancellor, will provide a report on each open forum. The Bryan Group will also present an overview of the background and qualifications of each finalist, including reference feedback, prior to their interview with the Chancellor Search Committee. The Committee will discuss and assess the finalists and may recommend a nominee or nominees for consideration of appointment by the full Board of Regents at a meeting to be held on Friday, June 30, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. The selection of the next chancellor of NSHE is a critical decision that will shape the future of higher education in Nevada. NSHE looks forward to the opportunity to engage with the finalists and make a well-informed decision for the benefit of students, faculty, and the entire Nevada community. 8 | Chamber Bi-Monthly Business News

Homeowners today have experienced a significant increase in equity, despite a recent slowdown in home price appreciation. Over the past few years, the number of homes for sale has been much lower than the number of homebuyers, leading to a substantial increase in home prices. Although the rate of price appreciation has reduced this year, homeowners have not lost all their home equity. According to the Homeowner Equity Insights report by CoreLogic, the average homeowner’s equity has increased by $34,300 over the past year.

Equity
Defining Diversity Diversity refers to anything that sets one individual apart from another. It is the presence of differences that may include race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, nationality, socioeconomic status, language, (dis)ability, age, or political perspective. Defining Equity Equity is providing support based on specific needs, and is manifested in fair access, equal opportunity, resources, and an ability to thrive in an environment of respect and dignity. Equity is often mistaken for equality, as exemplified in this analogy: Three kids are standing at a fence and they are all different heights. One kid can clearly see over the fence, another kid can barely see over, and the third kid can’t see anything because they are short. That’s not equity.

In a phone interview with The Balance, Bernard Banks, associate dean for leadership development and inclusion, and a clinical professor of management at Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, said that in this case, equity is “giving each kid something to stand on based on their height so that they all could see the same thing.” He added, “The same thing could be said for an organization; are you giving people what is necessary to help put them in the best possible position?” Defining Inclusion There are typically three elements of inclusion, particularly in a work environment: belonging, respect, and support. Belonging is one’s perception of acceptance, respect is the extent to which someone feels they are being treated with civility, and support is the level at which one is provided the means to achieve their full potential. If any of these elements is missing, the workplace is not truly inclusive.
