Chamber BI-Weekly 3 JUNE 26-30 / 2023

History: The Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Nevada (WCCNV) was founded in May 8, 2002 as the Official Nevada State Women’s Chamber in the state’s 159-year history of Nevada. I am also the owner of ABC Publishing since 1982 and have been an entrepreneur since 1977.

In early 2002, I was introduced to the idea of starting a Women’s State Chamber for Nevada by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington D.C., who I have been a member of for over 40 years. What most people do not know is that I've invested my own money to maintain the chamber for the first five years, until the membership gave the Chamber financial stability with the help of my own company ABC Publishing© we were able to raise extra revenue dues for our student scholarships.

I was also used my our publishing company to promote our Bi-Monthly Chamber Business Journal© to help market our members and give them a platform in Las Vegas media and started a subscription for nonmembers. Within the chamber publication we also promote Nevada about local and state news, chamber membership, relocation and visitors.

As the official State Women’s Chamber for Nevada, we are non-partisan and do not endorse candidates. We have no political affiliation, nor do we have PAC Fun but we do have a publication to help promote candidates to our membership base so they can decide who they want to vote for. We support women in all areas of business ownership and careers. We also support all diversity in business, local, and state and federal offices. Our Government Affairs Council Director is Ms. Anita Laruy, who has served 40 years in the legal and government arena.

As the CEO of WCCNV, I am always promoting all diversity of our Chambers of Commerce within the State of Nevada. We work with all 45 state chambers in the US and email our publications to thousands of city chambers as well.

Spotlighting UNLV’s positive impact on our communities, our region, and beyond

There’s a unique vibe on UNLV’s campus during the summer months. Thousands of students are continuing their studies with summer classes, our research labs are still buzzing with activity, and we’re pleased to host numerous professional and research conferences that bring so many to our university for the first time.

It’s also great to see so many future UNLV Rebels here on campus participating in dozens of camps and activities for K-12 students through our new Young Rebels initiative and our federally funded GEAR UP and Upward Bound programs.

As we look forward to what lies ahead this summer, it’s important to first take a moment to reflect on the incredible accomplishments of our faculty, staff, and students this spring semester. There’s so much to brag about at UNLV, and it’s a great feeling when I’m out and about and I connect with alumni and supporters to share a story or two about campus happenings.

One important way that our community – and people around the nation and world – find out about what’s happening on campus is through the news. Over the past few months, our talented faculty and students have been highlighted in hundreds of news stories.

I invite you to view a highlight reel that captures just a few of the headline-making stories from the Spring 2023 semester featuring our faculty and student experts. I also encourage you to visit our News Center throughout the summer to learn more about the people and programs that are leading UNLV to new heights.

Shelley Berkley announcing her retirement as Sr. Vice President, at Touro University Nevada

Berkley to retire after nearly a decade of leadership with Touro that includes an impressive roster of career accomplishments, significant impact on Southern Nevada’s higher education and healthcare landscape.

Touro University Nevada, home to Nevada’s largest medical school, announces the retirement of Shelley Berkley, Senior Vice President of the Touro University system. Remaining in her role through June 30, Berkley will finish her tenure at Touro after nearly a decade of leading Touro University Nevada through remarkable growth, innovation, and impact.

A resident of Las Vegas for nearly 60 years, Berkley has served as Senior Vice President of the Touro University system since July 2022, after being promoted from CEO and Senior Provost of Touro’s Western Division, a position she held for more than eight years. During Berkley’s tenure as CEO and Senior Provost, Touro University Nevada expanded its medical school and physician assistant studies class sizes. Both programs are the largest of their kind in the state of Nevada. She was also one of four individuals honored for their lasting contributions to the Touro University system during Touro’s 50th anniversary gala in New York City in December.

Berkley’s most notable accomplishments at Touro University Nevada include:

• Expanding annual enrollment of its medical school from 135 to 181 students. In 10 years, Touro will graduate roughly half of the estimated physicians needed in the state.

• Guiding the University through the unprecedented times of COVID-19, which included the transition to virtual learning and ensuring Touro served on the frontlines, beginning with testing and treating the Valley’s homeless population at Cashman Center in the earliest days of the pandemic.

• Securing a $3 million endowment from the State of Qatar in 2020 to support the Sharon Sigesmund Pierce and Stephen Pierce Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities, allowing Touro to hire more therapists and increase the number of families served.

• Helping to raise millions of dollars to enhance the medical education at Touro by securing partnerships with several donors and organizations across Nevada.

• Establishing the Touro Gala, which has raised millions of dollars for students while attracting notable guest speakers, including U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, the late Congressman and Civil Rights icon John Lewis, NBC News reporter Kerry Sanders, and former U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi.

“It has been one of the honors of my life to have been a part of the Touro University family for the past nine years,” Berkley said. “I have witnessed Touro’s impressive evolution as our state’s largest medical school, attracting talented students from around the country who are eager to make an impact on our community through healthcare and education. I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to help guide Touro and look forward to seeing what’s next for this remarkable institution.”

Prior to joining Touro, Berkley served the State of Nevada in the United States House of Representatives from 1999 to 2013. She was the first woman elected to Congress from the 1st Congressional District that includes most of the city of Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Strip and the city of North Las Vegas. She served seven consecutive terms. Prior to serving in Congress, Berkley was a member of the Nevada State Legislature and an elected member of the University Board of Regents. In her professional career, Berkley, a practicing attorney, served as Deputy Director of the State Commerce Department, in-house counsel for Southwest Gas Corporation and Vice President of Government and Legal Affairs at the Sands Hotel and Casino.

CAMPUZANO-PIGNATELLO Chamber Executive Board Member and the 2023 ATHENA International Awards Director

The Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Nevada

21st year Anniversary Celebration was a very intimate one this year

The WCCNV was started on Wednesday, May 8, 2002. It is the official Women’s “State” Chamber of Nevada’s 159-year History & it is one of three stand alone chambers in the U.S. which means it is not connected to City Chambers. Our Chamber is not an affiliate trade organization, so all monies paid for membership, sponsorship, advertising or donations stays right here in the State of Nevada to promote our programs, student scholarships & grants to help our members and Community.

John Huck & Justice Patricia Lee hosted this very intimate luncheon & as usual were the perfect combination.

A huge thank you to all of our incredible Chamber Ambassador Team who were recognized at the event. We are where we are because of all of you. Dawn Kyles, Rocio Mahoney, PJ Jackson, Brenda Gayle Bryant, Tamra Coulter, LaRee Ross & all of our other incredible members who volunteer their time to our Organization Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

Last but not least. I was recognized for my 10 years as a Board Member of the Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Nevada. During my 10 years with the Chamber, I have been a part of so many amazing things: the creation of the Legacy Foundation - Achieving your Dreams to Education Scholarship Program, honoring women in Nevada for their contributions, supporting & mentoring the Young Professionals Group, I have participated in speaking engagements promoting women in Nevada, charity events, fundraiser events, women development workshops, scholarship & youth program judge, did my first podcast, but most of all, I have had a chance to help our Community grow and along the way had an opportunity to build lasting relationships with incredible women in this community who I am beyond blessed to call my friends. Marie Scrofani, Patricia Lee, Anita Laruy, Summer Webb, Berenice Church, Rita Vaswani, Nileen Knoke, Norm Jr., CA Vjollca, Regina N. Ford, Cassandra Cotton, Pam Cash and Barbara Wood.

Congratulations Women's Chamber of Commerce of Nevada (WCCNV) & June L. Beland for your leadership the last 21 years.
