A CENTURY Into Operating, The U.S. Chamber Of Commerce Gets Its

FIRST

Female CEO SUZANNE P.

Clark 14 14| |WomensChamberofNevada.org WomensChamberofNevada.org

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday appointed Suzanne P. Clark as CEO, effective March 11, 2021. In taking the job, Clark will become the first woman to helm the organization in its 109-year history. Clark, who has served as t h e U. S . C h a m b e r ' s president since 2019, will retain her title along with that of CEO. She will s u c c e e d T h o m a s J. Donohue who has been in the role for 24 years. The U. S. C h a m b e r o f Commerce is the world's largest business federation and it represents more than 3 m i l l i o n b u s i n e s s e s, including state and local chambers and industry associations. While in her current position, Clark led a multiyear effort aimed at strengthening the U.S. Chamber's influence, advocacy and impact, in addition to modernizing its work and attracting new members to the organization. She is also credited with helping improve relationships with state and local chamber of commerce organizations. As president, she leads a team of nearly 500, advocating for businesses to foster a strong economy.

"I am honored to lead the U.S. Chamber at a time when our members need us most," Clark said in a statement. That need runs deep: Some 30% of American small businesses say they likely won't survive 2021 without additional government assistance, according to a recent Federal Reserve Bank survey that was conducted six months into the pandemic. With around 30 million U.S. small businesses, that means that some 9 million are at risk of permanently shuttering. "American businesses are dealing with the uncertainty of the pandemic, the challenges of a recession and uneven

recovery, stark shifts in government leadership and policy, and nearconstant disruptions being driven by

rapid technological advancement," Clark added. "Along with those challenges come tremendous opportunities for businesses to serve people and communities in new ways, to create a stronger and more competitive economy, and to innovate for the future.” Clark has served in a wide array of senior leadership roles at the Chamber from 1997 to 2007, including executive vice president and chief operating officer. Prior to rejoining the organization in 2014, Clark acquired and led financial information firm Potomac Research Group. Before that, she served as president at the advisory services company National Journal Group where she led the company through digital transformation.

In a post on the U.S. Chamber's website following the announcement of her appointment, Clark penned her vision for the future of the organization. "As I prepare to take up the mantle of leadership as the next president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, I look to all of those businesses, big and small, for the inspiring examples they set and for the i d e a s a n d innovations they continually put forward," she wrote. "Because forward is the only direction to go.” U. S . C h a m b e r B o a r d C h a i r Christopher Lofg ren said in a statement, "Clark has the deep management experience within the leadership of the U.S. Chamber, and a timely and powerful vision for how the organization can par tner with American business to expand the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's global impact and influence for years to come."

Clark's appointment is aligned with the recent trend of more companies tapping women to serve in the CEO position. While the number of female CEOs has nearly quadrupled in the last decade, according to executive recr uiting fir m Crist Kolder Associates' annual volatility report in 2020, there's still a long way to go to bridge the gender gap. Of the 682 CEO positions at S&P 500 and Fortune 500 companies at the time of Crist Kolder's report, just 44, or 6.5%, were held by women in 2020, up from 6.1% in 2019, 4.9% in 2018 and a meager 1.9% in 2010.

History St. Jude's Ranch for Children wasn't a place so much as a dream in the mind of one well-meaning man. ”What if we could build a place for neglected children?”. He wondered. “How much good could we do?” A lot! For 50 years, St. Jude's Ranch has provided a safe, nurturing home with therapeutic residential treatment services to thousands of abused and neglected children in Nevada. St. Jude's Ranch has made and continues to make a difference by creating new lives with new hope for these children. St. Jude's Ranch for Children was instituted in 1966, construction began in 1967 and later that year, Eddie – a boy from Elko, Nevada – became the first resident. The Ranch wasn't big or fancy, but the kind people of Southern Nevada quickly embraced the organization and its mission. The St. Jude's Ranch Women's Auxiliary was established and became the largest and most active support group in the Las Vegas area with more than 300 members. Publicity that had surrounded the Nite of Stars helped bring new supporters to the Ranch family. SONIA PETKEWICH

CEO, Taurean Consulting Group; Founder, Wolf Pack Las Vegas; Manager, Las Vegas IT Roundtable

Sonia prides herself on being an advocate for women in technology as well as women entrepreneurs. She supports several organizations with direct leadership, mentorship, volunteerism, and guidance, remaining dedicated to advancing women in our local community. This includes maintaining a hands-on relationship with Tech Impact since their arrival to Las Vegas in 2015, serving as a mentor for young students taking their first steps toward becoming IT professionals, providing lunch and learn sessions and Friday sessions, dedicated to helping them cultivate their soft skills and become more marketable. She has forged relationships with large gaming and hospitality organizations, making internships possible and even absorbing some of those costs into her own company. She is consistently gathering, connecting, and lifting up the women she encounters. She has a knack for interviewing and uses it to quickly determine what a woman may need, and then finds a way to make the impossible possible. She is on the board for LV Techies and is instrumental in organizing events that put schoolage girls in front of IT professionals in the community, giving them first-hand interactions and the ability to ask questions about their stories. This is crucial in showing these young women that what they see, they CAN be.

WENDI SCHWEIGART Founder, Project Marilyn, Inc. Director Of Marketing, NDL Group, Inc.

Wendi Schweigart, founder of Project Marilyn, Inc., and director of marketing at NDL Group, Inc., finds inspiration daily through the memory of her mother, who passed away of cancer in 2011. She founded Project Marilyn, named after her mother, in April 2019 after reading an article about 'the homeless period' in a magazine. “It highlighted a cause known as period poverty,” she says. “As a grown woman, I never thought about what a homeless person does when they get their period,” she says. “Two in five women cannot afford period supplies in a given year due to lack of income. However, the subject of a person's period is still taboo, so it's often ignored.” Schweigart also is proud of her family's construction company, NDL Group, Inc., which is the founding sponsor of (and donates space to) Project Marilyn. Schweigart also is on the leadership board and does charitable work (such as Real Men Wear Pink and Construction vs. Cancer) with The American Cancer Society. “A female leader never needs to diminish another woman's light; we all shine differently and those differences are what make us successful,” she says.
