Overcoming the Horrors of High School Dress Code When asked, most schools will say that the point of dress code is to prepare students for college and the workplace, or to keep the classroom feeling professional. However is that really the goal? When students get sent down to the office they get told that their clothes are distracting. Instead of the word inappropriate, distracting is used. To students that doesn’t sound like it is trying to prepare them for the future or to keep things professional, it sounds like it is making them responsible for whether or not their classmates can focus. The majority of the time the students getting sent down are females. The rules are just harder for females to follow with the popular trends and styles of our ages. These styles range from crop tops to ripped jeans to mid thigh dresses on a more professional note. Boys are pretty much okay with shorts and a button down or tee, while girls want to wear their high fashion skirts and dresses. To be fair there are more ways for a girl to be dressed inappropriately but most people would agree that knees, collarbones and shoulders aren’t going to turn anyone on, so are their classmates really distracted? If they are what causes it? When someone is considered out of dress code by their teacher they get sent down to the office for the principles’ opinion. More times than not they have to travel between the class and the office several times. This means lost class time for that student and interruptions for the rest, not to mention half the time they also have to take the time to change or wait in the office while parents bring
them different clothes. While the students in class are distracted by the departure and entrance as well as seeing if the student sent to the office had to change, the student with questionable dress is worried about missing out on valuable class time. It makes the females feel like the other students education is valued over theirs and that their dress matters more than their grades while it’s opposite for the rest. When dress code tells girls that it is their responsibility to dress to accommodate the other students, it enforces the idea that victims of rape are ‘asking for it,’ when they wear short skirts or low tops. These clothes are worn as a personal statement, not an invitation. College, where there is no dress code, is a crucial time in a students education, and part of their high school experience should be getting used to the way girls are bound to dress when they can finally wear whatever they want. The better they can handle it in high school, the easier getting used to college will be, and if the theory that the ways girls can dress is distracting is true, then the less their grades will be effected. However, no guy I have ever talked to has claimed to be distracted in the classroom by the way another student is dressed, but instead all of the traffic through the class due to dress code infractions. After all its most likely not the pair of leggings and oversized shirt that are the distraction, but instead the fuss made

about them. Although a lot of girls would be overjoyed, totally abandoning dress code would be just as stressful as trying not to get caught. With the newfound freedom a lot of people would go crazy with it, which would be distracting for everyone. Instead, maybe a more relaxed approach that allows any clothes that cover appropriately. Appropriateness would be up to the school administration to decide, but as long as no chest, rear end, or stomach is showing then is it really “inappropriate?” This simple change would also make it easier for students to dress professionally without having to shop in stores meant for businesswomen. Most of the clothes in those stores were not meant to fit teenagers shifting and growing bodies anyways, and this would allow them to wear clothes that make them feel confident instead of self conscious. Students agree that they will have plenty of time to wear business clothes when they are actually part of a business. This suggestion, however, will most likely be dismissed by the school boards as too much change. Since fashion will most likely change more quickly than social and cultural standards and ideas, it’s best to know how to work around strict dress codes while still being in style. Most dress codes require hemlines to be down to the knees, or at least reach your fingertips. However with the modern style finding dresses and skirts this long is near to impossible. For girls required by their sports to dress up, or

even to look professional as the school would like, they run into issues. It is almost impossible to find “professional” looking clothes for school aged girls without breaking dress code because they just don’t have many choices. There is simply no such thing as a stylish pant suit or A-line skirt for teens. The question now is how to dress stylishly without being punished for it. With the colder weather coming up, it is a great opportunity to dress well without crossing the line set up by schools. Since most schools require either crewnecks or for shirts to reach the collarbone, a great way to wear a favorite shirt that may be a little lower is to pair it with a scarf. While this may not be practical for the summer months, this tip can help from fall well into spring. Most schools also require a measurable sleeve length. During the hotter season this is painful when the tried and true tank can’t be worn, and although there is still not really a solution for that but during fall or winter, it, or any other sleeveless top can be worn with a sweater and it’s good to go. Pairing it with a scarf works for tank tops too. Since most tank tops are lower cut a scarf is a perfect fix. How it Began
Now that the definition of preppy has been stated, and the roots of preppy have been explained, you might ask, what in the world does Keeneland have to do with that?
According to Southern Proper’s “Keeneland Dress Code,” at the horse track now-a-days you’ll see girls modeling bright Lilly Pu litzer sun dresses. What to Wear?
That’s right, I said fun. So, let’s get to the fun part. If you’ve never been to Keeneland, the first question you may have is what should I wear? And the answer is simple. (Almost) Whatever you want! The Keeneland dress code isn’t a set of rules carved into stone, and although the roots of Keeneland follow the preppy trend (and most of the girls do too) doesn’t mean that you have to. Wear what makes you happy, but also keep these Keeneland Do’s and Dont’s in mind.
1. DO dress up. Keeneland is a
“see and be seen” kind of place. While jeans and a classic tee are, as we can all agree, super comfortable, do you really want to be seen in them surrounded by a crowd of girls dressed to the nines? Didn’t think so. Use Keeneland as an excuse to get all dolled up, or wear that dress hidden in the back of your closet. Also, remember it’s better to overdress than underdress, and that rule applies to everything!
never have thought of trying!
3.
DO show off your favorite styles of the seasons. A.K.A. dress weather appropriate! Keeneland is open during two very different seasons, the spring and the fall. Therefore, if you are going to the races in April and it’s an 80 degrees outside, riding boots and a chunky sweater, while cute, would not be appropriate. The same goes for the fall meet. Please do not try wearing a strapless dress and sandals in 50 degree weather. Try to check the forcast and plan your outfit around your findings next time you head out to the track!
5.
2. DON’T judge other peo-
ples’ styles. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Clothing is a way to express yourself, so judging others outfits is not okay. How would you feel if someone was staring at you, making fun of the way you dressed yourself. It’s rude and not necessary. One of the best parts of Keeneland is checking out other girls outfits! It’s an awesome way to find inspiration from others that you can incorporate into your own style. Who knows, you might see a new style or accessory that you would
your legs look longer, and the offer a few extra inches to the vertically challenged, but Keeneland is not the place for these shoes. Finding a bench in general admission is difficult, especially on a crowded day. So, unless you’re sitting in the Clubhouse or another special section of the tracks, you are going to be doing a lot of standing. No one likes the girl who complains the whole time that her feet hurt, or the girl who breaks a heel because her hot pink kittens sunk into the mud while tailgating. Wear the flats ladies! Flats and sandals are great substitutes for heels. Sandal brands like Jack Rodgers USA and Tory Burch can even keep you dressed in the preppy theme. Also try cheaper alternative from places like Payless Shoe Store, Target, or Tj Maxx. During the fall season riding boots or ankle booties paired with a shift dress can be adorable, and more importantly comfortable. You will thank me later!

DO dress classy. As I have already stated, do dress in your own style, do dress according to the weather, do dress up, but most importantly, do dress classy. You’re going out in public around a group of conservative southern people. Mini skirts and necklines that plunge to your belly button aren’t the most appropriate things to wear to Keeneland. While wearing what makes you comfortable, and what makes you happy, you need to be sure what you wear isn’t offending others. A good rule of thumb when getting dressed is to ask yourself if your grandmother would approve of the outfit!
Keeneland Style
Spring On warm days in the spring try a bright printed dress with sandals. Lilly Pulitzer is a big hit this time of year! With her colorful prints, it’s hard not to see Lilly around general admission.
For rainy days at Keeneland try a bright pair of rain boots with your outfit. They can be preppy and practical!
Go for a cut out or low back! Remember to keep it classy, but cutouts that show a small amount of skin can be tastefully worn! Fall For a chilly day at the fall meet try this! Cream sweaters pair nicely with neutral tweed, like this skirt. On top wear a tan blazer and accessorizes with a multi-strand pearl necklace. Underneath, complete the outfit with brown tights and chocolate brown riding boots to stay warm while still looking trendy.
Vests are a great way to accessorise an outfit and stay warm! Try pairing a vest with a sweater and skirt. Top the look off with tall socks and riding boots and violà! A great way to spread some cheer while the leaves turn brown and the trees become barren is to wear a few pops of color! A bright spring dress pairs beautifully with a jean jacket and riding boots, a cute season transition outfit! Guys..? Alright ladies, here’s a challenge. Help your favorite men out by choosing their outfit. Bowties,

ties, khakis or colored pants, button downs, blazers, Sperry boat shoes, and some trendy shades will have your man, brother, or even father dressed and ready for the races!
Keeneland Gift shop After talking about all these outfits you must be dying to know where you should shop. Try the Keeneland gift shop! Where better to buy your outfits for the races than at the races themselves. The Keeneland gift shop sells a variety of different brands like Sail to Sable, Vineyard Vines, Patagonia, and Peter Millar. From dress to t-shirts, they have it all, even a section for your southern gentleman! The staff of ladies there are ready to represent Keeneland’s traditions and styles. Check out the gift shop next time you are at Keeneland! Why is preppy embedded in Keeneland’s roots? Who knows? Who cares! Keeneland is full of traditions, and dressing up to go bet or visit with others is enjoyable for people of all ages. Remember to dress to impress and you’ll be winning before the races and gambling have even started!

Time-Traveling through Your Wardrobe By Caleigh Evans
Look at the outfit you are currently wearing. If you were living at this time 20 years ago would you be wearing the same thing? What about 50 years ago? Obviously your answer is most likely, no. Fashion trends change along with times. These changes are often caused by political reasons or national events that set expectations on women such as family influences. However, when fashion changes not all styles leave forever. Some style fads never leave and some reappear in later years. If you have ever seen The Great Gatspy you can recognize that the women’s fashion in the

was very fun, including “flappers” and elaborate headbands. This era was a significant beginning in fashion. In 1920, women were finally allowed the right to vote through the 19th amendment. Following this freedom, other freedoms were consequently developed. Due to this, women were able to get jobs and provide an additional income to their family. With an extra income flow from jobs, more expenses were able to be made including fashion. 1920’s fashion was heavily influenced by the popularity of jazz music, which was often danced to with The Charleston. This dance helped to establish the distinguishable style of the 1920’s because loose-fitting clothing made dancing easier. Considering how long ago the 1920’s occurred, your closet most likely does not include many features of it. The main characteristic was conservative yet fun. This style may include a frilly shirt or dress. Accessories of the 1920’s are more commonly known today. Headbands going across the forehead, rather than resting on the crown, are an example of a common accessory. Popularity of pearls also grew during the 1920’s, and are currently an iconic accessory. Hollywood had a heavy influence towards the use of pearls, and this celebrity influence of style continues throughout the decades. This decade came to an end with a major event in American history, The Wall Street Crash. Occurring in 1929, this caused the next decade to begin with The Great Depression. Living Farm History provides a motto of The Great Depression, “Repair, reuse, make do, and don’t throw anything away.” Following this motto, many women created homemade dresses from chicken feed sacks and other household items. All four of these suggestions still may be used today. We have all had a fashion emergency when we need grandma to sew up a small tear or patch

Previously, slacks had a connotation of “scandalous” and women should be ashamed if they wore them. While women’s husbands were at war, they had more of a need to work and wear professional clothing. This era created an array of feminist pursuers. One representative of this feminist era was Rosie the Riveter. We are all familiar with her iconic style of a typical working woman in the 1940’s. The conservative and professional look of the 1940’s and 1950’s drew to an end as the decade did. Even modest outfits, like suits, became a shorter length. The significant teen style continued during the 1960’s. Children born during the baby boom all grew to be teenagers, therefore their significance grew even more. Teen style consisted of shorter skirts and color block patterns. This began to develop into the women’s style too. Occurring, because mothers of teenagers would try and mock their style to fit in with society. Your modern day closet may include more clothing from the style towards the end of the 1960’s. Common day similarities may include tyedye t-shirts, maxi dresses, and other loose flowing items. Woodstock occurred at the end of the 1960’s, beginning the influence of the “hippy” style. Including styles similar to loose fitting clothes, flowers, and tye-dye. The “hippy” style carried over into the 1970’s. However, it was eventually replaced by the style influence of rockstars. Many bands, such as KISS, wore a spandex material making it a common style.
1920
1930
Following this idea of spandex, Jersey Wrap dresses were popularized. These dresses were a necessity to fashion at the time and could be found in most women’s closets. Bright colors also grew during this time. Denim was another roar in fashion at the time, and was used a ton. Anyway you can think of wearing denim, it was most likely popular in the 1970’s. This included various types of jeans: bell bottom, studded, high rise, etc. It was even used for vests and skirts! If you are love struck for denim, this obviously is the decade’s style you represent. Currently denim jackets with dresses and the simple skinny jean are of the most common uses for denim. However, you may not follow society’s ideas of fashion and you may still wear embroidered jean vests just like they did in the 1970’s. Favorite bands, still to this day, influence fashion. No matter if your favorite band is Pink Floyd or P!nk they probably have some influence. Honestly, who doesn’t go to a concert and buy a T-shirt of the band and wear clothes just like them? Music continued to influence fashion into the 1980’s. This decade was influenced by singers like Madonna and Annie Lennox.
1940
1950
Music videos were broadcasted on MTV, which incorporated to the significant style of the teens. A more typical trend of the 1980’s (the “goto outfit to wear for an 1980’s themed party) is the style of leggings, legwarmers, and neon leotards. Often pieced together with a high ponytail formed with a scrunchie. Formal wear was inspired through Princess Diana and her evolution to a princess which was displayed on local tabloids. Imitating the style of a princess, surely made you look beautiful. Ever since the Royal Wedding in 2011, Kate Middleton has been a fashion icon just as Princess Diana once was. Her professional and elegant, yet young style is idolized in tabloids all across the world. Your dream closet probably contains her entire wardrobe, this was similar to the way women of the 1980’s viewed Princess Diana. On a more laid back level, leggings of the 1980’s remain a fashion phenomena today. Although we may no longer pair them with legwarmers and a unitard, we still developed this comfortable yet cute style from the 1980’s. The exercise style of the 1980’s was similar to the casual style which developed in the 1990’s.
1960
1970
Women of this time had a somewhat unfeminine style. Including, flannel and oversized shirts. Music continued to play a key role in fashion; skull caps and layered looks were inspired from bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. The laid-back style with baggy clothes was developed from the hip hop style. A significant role in the style of this time was from movies. The movie Clueless introduced knee length pleated skirts and knee high socks, Practical Magic introduced ankle length skirts, and camouflage was introduced through 10 Things I Hate About You. This style has reoccurred in the last summer. A trend of crop tops paired with longer skirts became popular. Finally, we come to the most modern era of the 2000’s. Although some new styles have appeared during this era, majority is just a modge podge of past style. No matter what the “style of the era” is, remember to fill your closet with what are YOUR favorites. You never know when they will reappear in the ongoing cycle of style.

Caleigh doesn’t know what her future plans are, but she hopes to pursue a career involving math and chemistry.
