Spotlight Actor: Eddie Redmayne By Jamie Johnson 5

How He Started

The Theory of Everything

Eddie Redmayne is admired by many. Eddie’s dazzling hazel eyes stole the hearts of thousands across the nation. His smile, no doubt, “I thought Eddie had girls keeping up to date Redmayne portrayed on his every move. He isn’t me very well in The only considered a pretty Theory of Everything face, but he also has great Movie. He spent time talent in acting. with ALS sufferers so he could be He’s played very different authentic. At times, roles in numerous movies; I thought he was however, he always seems me.” to pull it off. How could a -Stephen Hawking man from London be so diversely skilled in taking on the personalities of so many characters?

Redmayne’s love of acting started in his early teens, participating in a play called Oliver. From then on, he tried out for any play he saw in his area. Eddie Redmayne gave himself a year to make his career settled in acting. He successfully landed many parts in theatres near his college. Ever since, Eddie has been working his way up to the memorable movies he’s starred in such as ‘The Theory of Everything,’ ‘My

Actor Eddie Redmayne played the lead role of Stephen Hawking in ‘ The Theory of Everything.’ Eddie successfully portrayed the struggle both emotionally and physically of motor neuron disease through his character. He not only reflected the character within his struggles, but also in his intellectual and romantic interests.

Eddie knew before starting filming that his biggest critic would be the man he was portraying on the screen. Eddie went to Stephen Hawking’s home in England and talked to him about what Stephen wanted to see in the movie and how he would like to see the part played out. After watching the film, Hawking was emotional and said at some points he thought he was watching himself. This is mind blowing, coming from the man who Eddie was portraying in the movie. This seems to be the best moments for Eddie in his career thus far.

Week with Marilyn,’ and ‘Black Death.’

In ‘The Theory of Everything’ Eddie Redmayne successfully made what was thought to be the most difficult and brave transformation in acting. One of the hardest transformations for an actor to take on is accurately playing out a disease that they don’t have. For doing so, Eddie received the Golden Globe Award and the Academy Award. Eddie’s name was known to many directors, surely, by the release of this movie.

My Week With Marilyn Not only did Eddie Redmayne play a role in shining a light on the life of Stephen Hawking, but he did it for Marilyn as well. In ‘My Week with Marilyn,’ Eddie was presented as a co-worker of Marilyn Monroe, who was determined to put his career in the hands of filming. In “My Week with Marilyn” the story starts as Marilyn starring the a film called ‘The Prince and The Showgirl.’ Marilyn also happened to be on her honeymoon with her newly-wedded husband. Eddie plays an astounding part assisting Marilyn to escape the pressure of her work and having an affair with her. Eddie played off his part as being considered “the boy next door.” There’s no doubt he has fulfilled not only his role in this film, but others too, according to the Huffman Post.

Savage Grace However, could Eddie fulfill his role of a schizophrenic, murderous son? ‘Savage Grace’ is a film that portrays one of America’s most memorable murderous tragedies. Eddie plays the role of a boy going through many things throughout his childhood and being a disappointment to his father quite well. The endless times his character had been talked down to in his film eventually led the character to his breaking point. Killing his mother, the only person he was close to, showed how mentally sick the character was. Though this movie was downplayed by highly recognizable reviewers, Eddie still played his awkward part exceptionally, especially for just starting out in movies.

Les Miserables One last movie Eddie Redmayne was part of was ‘Les Miserables.’ Once he was one of the leading roles in this movie, Redmayne had fulfilled one of his childhood dreams. He had always wanted to be part of this extravagant work since he saw the play as a child. In an interview conducted by Katey Rich, she says he was tearful for the first fifteen minutes. Redmayne is described at a truly empathetic actor, and according to Katey Rich, that’s what will

keep his name known in the industry. Eddie not only made a name for himself in acting for this film, but singing as well. Eddie Redmayne originally had no professional singing in his background. After Redmayne hit every note just perfectly, directors and interviewers couldn’t wait to meet Eddie for themselves.

Black Death Eddie was not always in the spotlight though. Could Eddie pull through with a supporting role to make this movie complete? Redmayne was still significant to the story itself in the movie ‘Black Death.’ This movie was set in 1348 when the plague is at its worst, killing all in its path. Eddie Redmayne played the role of a monk, Osmund, following a fearsome knight. Though Osmund had an obligation to God, he was secretly in love with a woman named Averill. In the movie, Osmund sent word to Averill to hopefully spare her life of the Black Death. As time went on, the knight reminded Osmund of their true mission of finding the person who seems to be raising people from the dead. The knight believes it is God’s work to murder the one raising people from the dead, however Osmund does not want to be any part of it. Redmayne played such a contradicting part of this film, however he did it glamorously.

The Reel Deal The Inside Scoop on 2015’s Most Popular Movies

By Kendell Anthony

was given some great reviews by critics. “The Scorch Trials maintains the semi-successful bar of intriguing movie escapism set by The Maze Runner,” said Ben Kendrick, a critic from screenrant.com. “Released from the confines of the original, Scorch trials is bigger and more ambitious,” said Gregory Wakeman, a critic from cinemablend.com.

re you bored on a Friday night? Head down to your local movie theater and check out some of 2015’s most popular movies. Here are a few of the movies that are most liked from 2015: The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, Jurassic World, Fantastic Four, and many more. You’re not sure which movie you would or wouldn’t like? I’m here to help!

Scorch Trials

The Scorch Trials is a movie full of action and suspense based of the book series The Maze Runner written by James Dashner. Transported to a remote outpost, Thomas and his fellow teenage Gladers find themselves in trouble after uncovering a diabolical plot from the mysterious and powerful organization, WCKD (an organization originally formed to find a cure for The Flare). With help from a new ally, the Gladers stage a daring and dangerous escape into the Scorch, a desolate landscape filled with dangerous obstacles. Their only hope might be to find the Right Hand, a group of fighters to help them battle WCKD. This movie was liked by most and

Jurassic World

If you’re interested in action filled movies, another one you might like is Jurassic World. The Jurassic World luxury resort provides a habitat for a group of genetically engineered dinosaurs, including the vicious and intelligent Indominus Rex. When the massive creature escapes, it sets off a chain reaction that causes the other dinosaurs to run riot. Now, it’s up to a former military man and animal expert (Chris Pratt) to use his special skills to save two young brothers and the rest of the tourists from an all-out, prehistoric assault. Similar to the reviews of Scorch Trials, critics also found this movie very

enjoyable, but believed it was less than its predecessor: Jurassic Park. An undeniably vigorous assault of jaw-chomping jolts and family bonding that nevertheless captures only a fraction of the original films overflowing awe and wonderment,” said Scott Foundas, a critic from variety.com. ‘’At it’s best, it’s good enough to take your mind off it’s worst, which is saying a lot,” says David Edelstein, a critic from vulture.com Much like the critic reviews, I too loved this movie. The special effects that were used made this movie come to life. Not only did the special effects play a huge role in the enjoyment of the movie, but also the actors. The actors in this movie did a wonderful job at making this movie feel like a reality. They knew

how to express the right emotions to help the audience feel the passion of the movie. Although I did love this movie, it was nothing in comparison to its original film, Jurassic Park. Jurassic Park was a great movie filmed in 1993. When a few select people are chosen to tour an island theme park populated by dinosaurs, they are assured that the facility is safe, but when they get to the park, they find out otherwise. If you are a lover of all things fiction, then both Jurassic World and Jurassic Park are movies you would enjoy.

Paper Towns

Action movies aren’t your thing? There are plenty of other genres, such as drama. One great movie from 2015 under the drama genre is John Green’s Paper Towns. Paper Towns is one of the few dramatic movies liked by critics. Young and shy Quentin is in for the night of his life when Margo, the most popular student in high school, recruits him to help her play mischievous pranks on the friends who betrayed her. The next day, however, Margo is nowhere to be found. With help from a few buddies and some clues that she left behind, Quentin embarks on an obsessive mission to find the girl who stole his heart and made him feel alive. “There maybe nothing fresh left to find teens coming of age, but director Jake Schreier fakes it with genuine sincerity,” says Peter Travers from rollingstone. com.

“It may not subvert every cliche of the high-school romance genre, but director Jake Schreier’s coming-ofage dramedy nonetheless pulses with moving and melancholy moments,’ says Justin Chang from variety.com. Although I liked the actors and special effects in this movie, I did not enjoy it. I didn’t enjoy the plot of the movie and hated the ending. If you like movies that will leave you heartbroken and confused then this is definitely a movie you would enjoy. But i recommend that if you don’t like cliffhangers or being left abrupt, then this movie is not for you. If none of these movies sound interesting to you, check out some other genres! Theres many more than the few that I have talked about. If you are interested in some, or even all of these movie, go check them out! You won’t be disappointed!

BIFIED

Grab your families and something you can protect them with. Oh look! There’s a machete in a corpse’s hand. You don’t seem to have any other choice but to approach him slowly and snatch it out of his cold, bare, hands. Don’t you dare feel too squeamish about it either. It’s not like he will be needing to use it any longer. You need to start changing the way you think. Perhaps the “survival of the fittest” mindset will be your best bet. It just isn’t safe to be here, in this small town anymore. Something is happening… Something strange.

The streets are filled with savages. They seem to be getting hostile. Where are the reinforcements? Oh my god! That little girl just tackled a man started ripping this chest apart. Sh!t! Someone just shot her in her chest to get her off. Apparently it didn’t do too much good. She just seemed to brush it off and got back up on her feet and started to hobble quickly towards them. How was she able to do that? She should’ve been dead. Unless these people… aren’t really people. People wouldn’t be capable of getting back up after something like that… Could they? They just have to be something more. What on earth could they be? What is this town coming too? Have these people just gone mad or have you entered the world of The Walking Dead?

16

The Walking Dead is an AMC’s original hit series, based off of a comic book series The Walking Dead, which is written by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. This show first premiered on October 31st, 2010 and . With the help of the producer Frank Darabont, it has been on top of the charts since then. This show has been successful with a total of 5 seasons, containing 67 different episodes in all. The action and story line just has the fans dying for more. As soon as a season ends, the producers, unfortunately, have them dangling on the edge of their seats, for a couple of months, waiting for more. For example, season 5 premiered on October 12th, 2014 and ended on March 29th, 2015. Then finally, season 6, which we fans have been waiting ever so patiently for, will premiere on October 11th, 2015. Don’t you worry if you’re a little behind, I’m here to catch you up on what’s been biting, but i won’t be letting you know how things taste. Rick Grimes, who is played by a British actor, Andrew Lincoln, is the lead character of the show. He mysteriously winds up in a coma, then he suddenly wakes up, to realize he’s alone and finds out that the situation in the outside world started to get worse. While he was out, he had top notch army soldiers, marching through the halls of the hospital, shooting down any person they saw, infected or not, just to be in the clear. As Rick stumbles out of the hospital, he tries his best to comprehend his surroundings.

17

He gets too overwhelmed and falls, almost becoming a meal for a walker. Suddenly, a stranger, saves him and takes him into his home, where he and his son were staying in attempt to wait out this living hell of a nightmare. Rick, learns how to fight back from this father and son duo. He learns information such as what areas are said to be safe and what areas are to be avoided. when this duo thinks he’s ready… they let him go off on his own. He fights off walkers as he travels, follows leads, and hopes it’ll take him to where his family could possibly be. Rick finally finds his wife and son, along with other survivors. They struggle trying to find out what has happened and trying to find peace throughout season one. The second season begins with Rick and his group of survivors leaving the place where things started going downhill. Rick and his group began traveling on a highway and something tragic happens, Miss Carol’s daughter gets scared while a hoard (large group of walkers) passes by, and a rather slow one, decides to go up behind the daughter, causing her to run off into the woods catching the attention of other walkers. While everyone’s trying to cope with what’s going on, searching for the little girl and dealing with their own emotional stability, they keep moving. They arrive at a farm, Hershel’s farm. These people, Hershel’s family and Rick’s

group, now have to figure out how to survive with each other and how to manage keeping the walkers out without drawing the attention of more and how to not overstep their boundaries. By then, secrets are exposed… Lori, Rick’s wife, is showing symptoms of being pregnant, but the time doesn’t add up. While Rick was in a coma, his best friend led Lori and Carl, their son, out of town. Lori thought her husband was dead and slept with Shane. When Rick returns, he found out the hard truth and complications rise between them. Is the baby his or is it Shane’s?

Rick Grimes is knealing down, possibly debating weither he should give up or not.

While at the farm, the group has to abide by civil laws and consequences are given to those who don’t. By this time, the group has realized that some people are risks to the rest of them. So they handled those who had the potential of causing the threat in ways, such as killing them or kicking them out without weapons, which is basically they indirectly fed them to the walkers. The groups will is tested when something huge happens. Rick’s wife, Lori, dies while giving birth. They have to cooperate with each other in order to keep Rick and the prison under control. But… will they succeed or will it just be a failed effort?

18

The third and fourth season tie together. Both seasons bring back a few characters from season one while introducing new characters managing to them all into the story line, with the ironic help of possibly killing off a few of your favorite or hated characters. These seasons takes place in an abandoned prison and these survivors come face to face with sickness, walkers, death and human enemies. The group have to find sources of food, gas, water and medicine. They even travel quite a bit, sending groups of people at a time to scavenge, leaving them sometimes, defenseless. While at this prison, they become somewhat comfortable and let their guard down... Only for it to be forced back up again. These people must learn how to stand their ground and how to fight back anything this new life has to throw at them. Enemies, such as The Governor who is out to get Rick specifically, becomes more of a major pain in the you know what, in season four. He tries to make survival difficult for Rick and his group so they’ll eventually give up. Besides the fact of the evil one eyed man is trying to break what hope they have of survival, they’ve come so far, but after a tragic loss of Lori and a horrific gain of baby Judith, will they be able to keep themselves up and going? Finally, the most recent season, season five, captures when the group is split up and part of them are on their way to Terminus, Sanctuary For All, the other part of them stop at

a church and build it up so it’s safe enough to protect them from the outside world in attempt to wait for Carol and Daryll to return. While here, the group decides that if they split up, theyd have a better chance if surving. There’s an odd man, who says he claims he knows a cure for the zombie infection and needs help to get to washington safetly. the group trusts him and decide to follow through with the trip, leaving loved ones behind. The ones staying behind are Carl, Rick’s son, and a few other survivors, at the church to help protect baby Judith as much as they can from the outside world while waiting for the other two groups to return with any information that can lead them to not haing to fight for survival anymore. The one that Rick himself is leading, want to check out this Terminus establishment that claims anyone who arrives, survives. But the group caomes to a rude awakening when they realioze that the people of Terminus eat seomthing very unusual... human meat. The survivors are kidnapped to find out that other group members where captured and are being held hostage as well. Is this the end for Rick and his group? Will he be able to keep his word by keeping his people safe or will they give up?

Zombie appocolypse.

Luckily, Carol, who no one ecpected at all, suddenly becomes a total bad-ass and decides to save the day by completley blowing the hell out of Terminus. This allowed walkers to come in and literally tear the town people apart while being able to kill a few of her own. Rick and his people managed to escape. They head back to the church to recollect his group, after they stop by a hopital to check on suspicious activity that they’ve spotted. Where Hershel’s daughter Beth is found at and is hot and killed beforehand.

A Zombie.

While trying to cope with loss and still trying to survie... they pick themselves up and move north, where the find another establishment. Alexandria. Could this be a permanent solution or will the group have problems fitting it? Who knows? Well, they get settled in and so far, everyone is getting along and seem to be finding their place in the world. Rick realizes that this is what the group really needed; a home. However, the balance is destroyed when Rick discovers that a family is having problems... The father is an alcoholic and is controlling, the mother is fragile and unaware of how to defend herself due to her having two children to be strong for... Rick finds out, drags the man out of his house, and beats the shit out of him, not letting the man have any chance whatsoever to get up and defend himself. Rick suddenly goes to reach for his gun and puts his finger on the trigger... If you’re curious to what Rick decides to do, tune into AMC and watch for season 6!

Moving up in Music

By: Hinzee Smith

The music scene is ever changing, with some artists fading out and new artists always popping up. Artists spend countless hours writing songs, singing, and finding places to play and still only a few make it to the big leagues. Each genre has new artists everyday, Hoodie Allen is emerging in the rap scene, while Vance Joy combines indie/alternative music with pop, and Jana Kramer breaks out on the country music front. While these artist’s musical talents may be different, one thing they have all accomplished is that they have persevered and made their dreams a reality. My personal dream was meeting Hoodie Allen, and I made it a reality

Hoodie Allen Hoodie Allen, known as Steven Markowitz to his family and friends, was born and raised in Long Island, New York. He chose his stage name to be Hoodie Allen because “Hoodie” was his childhood nickname and he wanted to make to make a play off of Woody Allen, a famous actor.

Vance Joy

Vance Joy was born in Australia in 1987. Growing up he was a promising Australian rules football( a sport that is a mix of soccer, football, and rugby) player. Vance graduated St. Kevin’s College as well as Monash College in Melbourne, Australia with a Bachelor of Arts and a bachelor of law.

Jana Kramer Jana Kramer is an American actress and country singer, best known for her role in One Tree Hill as Alex Dupree. Kramer has also appeared in Grey’s Anatomy, Friday Night Lights, and 90210. Jana definately rocked each role.

Hoodie Allen Months of anticipation all for this very moment, the moment when the crowd behind me roars as Hoodie Allen takes the stage. Opening for ‘“The Boys of Zummer Tour” this year with Wiz Khalifa and Fall Out Boy, Hoodie Allen had the opportunity of a lifetime. Breaking the genre barrier by bringing rap, rock, and pop together in one concert, these artists toured the country for three months. With MTV’s artist of the year MAX touring with them, The Boys of Zummer had quite the fan base. Hoodie Allen brought a new sound to the tour, proving to be essential to smooth the cleavage between the genres. Hoodie Allen has been making music all his life, but started getting popular in 2012 with the release of his first EP (EP is short for extended play, much like an album but with fewer songs.) All American. The following year he released Crew Cuts, with the popular song “Cake Boy”. Hoodie then released All American Acoustic, followed by his debut album People Keep Talking. After that Hoodie went on tour, headlining with Chiddy Bang opening. After finishing his tour, Hoodie tweeted at Pete Wentz, the bassist of Fall Out Boy, saying they should tour together, a few months later they announced the Boys of Zummer tour. The Boys of Zummer tour hit 40 cities all over the U.S. Earlier this year at the Grammys, Hoodie’s most popular song “No Interruption” was played. Hoodie Allen has also released a song with Ed Sheeran, a multi-award winning singer. Hoodie has also received attention from popular rapper Drake. Hoodie Allen is receiving attention from major artist hoping to boost his popularity, and broaden his fanbase. Hoodie isn’t the only emerging artist getting attention from some of the most popular artist.

Jana Kramer Jana Kramer started her music career in 2012 when she released her debut single “Why Ya Wanna”. On June 5, 2012 she released her self titled debut album Jana Kramer which received positive feedback from critics, praising her for her vocal skills. In 2013 she was nominated for 4 awards and won Top New Female Artist at the ACM Awards. In July 2013 Jana opened for Blake Shelton,an American country music singer and co-host of the voice. Jana Kramer has successfully balanced an acting and singing career. Jana has not only had a successful acting career, but she has successfully transitioned into the music industry.

Vance Joy Vance Joy, formerly known as James Keogh, is spending his days touring with Taylor Swift. Currently on the 1989 tour, Vance and Taylor are quite the duo. His most popular song, riptide peaked at number 1 on the 2013 Triple J Hottest 100. Vance Joy released his debut album Dream Your Life Away on September 5, 2014 in Australia and on September 9 everywhere else. Vance Joy’s hit “Riptide” was certified triple platinum by the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) after peaking at 6 on ARIA’s charts. The song Rip-

25

tide was inspired by a motel Joy and his family would stay at while on vacation. Vance Joy has other popular songs including “From Afar, Georgia, Mess is Mine”, and many others. Vance Joy is categorized as indie pop or folk, “I think there’s always a bit of variety with my songwriting, so probably the EP is a good reflection of what the rest of the album will be like. It’s all different songs, I guess, but all tied together in a way,” says Vance as he describes his album Dream Your Life Away.

All these artist have struggled and worked to emerge in the music scene. Hoodie Allen started at the young age of 13, Vance Joy exploded with his hit riptide, and Jana Kramer made the transition from acting to singing. They have all found success and only have more and more opportunities to succeed in the future. All of these artist have worked hard to get to where they are. Music is one of the most competitive job fields so being an up and coming artist is an accomplishment only few can claim.
