Bright Lights at the Oscars

A
s the talking slowed down and the lights began to dim, the audience knew that the Oscars were about to start. The Oscars, also known as the Academy Awards, is an American Annual award ceremony that recognizes the excellence in modern cinematic achievement. Ever since 1929, the annual Oscar ceremony has taken place, awarding all the hard work the creators had put into filmmaking. However, unlike the televised award show we have today, the first Academy Awards was a private dinner of 250 people held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Fifteen awards were given that night, honoring artists, directors, and other members in the filmmaking industry. Americans have been able to listen to the Oscars though their radios since 1930. It wasn’t until 1953 when the first Oscar ceremony was televised. It took place at both the RKO Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, California and the NBC International Theatre in New York City. It was not only the first time the Oscars were televised but it was the first ceremony held in Hollywood and New York City. People from all over the country tuned in to watch the very first televised Academy Awards attracting a total of 34 million viewers.

The World of Color
How “Oscar” Became When many hear the word “Oscars” they most likely picture the shiny, gold, 13.5 inch tall Oscar Statue. The idea of the Oscar Statue was first thought of by MGM director Cedric Gibbons. He was inspired by a knight standing on a reel of film gripping a crusader’s sword. He then hired sculptor George Stanley to put his idea to life. Weighing eight-and-a-half pounds, the 24-karat gold plated Oscar Statuette is given to those who have achieved in filmmaking every year. The statuettes presented at the initial ceremonies were gold-plated bronze, however, due to the metal shortage during WWII the Oscars were made of painted plaster for three years. After the war, the Academy changed the plaster into gold-plated metal. Over 80 years after the magnificent gathering in Hollywood, Oscar’s success as a symbol for the achievement in filmmaking would’ve shocked those who attended the dinner as would its designer, Cedric Gibbons. Flashback of Filmmaking Not only have the Oscars themselves evolved throughout time but the art of filmmaking has as well. The use of color, sound, and special effects in filmmaking has made the difference in comparing modern films to those of the early 1920’s. As a matter of fact, the first film to win best picture, Wings(1927), directed by William Wellman, was a silent film. This breathtaking love story was the only silent film to win best picture up until 2011’s The Artist, directed by Michel Hazanavicius, a French film director. Hazanavicius claimed that he has “always loved silent movies” and “became really fascinated by the format- how it works, the device of the silent movie.” He believed that “the lack of sounds makes you participate in the storytelling.” Unlike the majority of modern films, Hazanavicius wanted to take on the difficult challenge of entertaining the audience without the use of color and sound. When motion pictures were first invented in the 1890s, there was an ongoing desire for color. Early color films include The Wizard of Oz, Becky Sharp, Meet Me in St. Louis, and Gene Kelly. Color in film was not fully introduced until 1935, whereas the first color film to win best picture was Gone With the Wind (1939), directed by Victor Fleming, George Cukor and Sam Wood. Color in movies nowadays is used specifically to evoke emotions from the viewers or make an impression. A major way movies create a certain mood is by the colors they use. With the help of modern advancements in cameras and computers, the possibilities for creating outstanding color in movies are endless. British novelist, Anthony Burgess, once said, “It’s funny how the colors of the real world only seem really real when you watch them on a screen.” Not only do movies tell a story; they put the viewer in a different world. Award Categories The Oscars give out several different awards all for different accomplishments in the world of filmmaking. There were fifteen categories at the first Oscar ceremony: cinematography, actor, actress, art direction, directing (comedy picture), directing (dramatic picture), engineering effects, outstanding (best) picture, unique and artistic picture, writing (adaption), writing (original story), writing (title writing), and the special award. Contrasting from the 1929 ceremony, today’s Oscar ceremonies have a total of 24 award categories. Categories such as animated feature film, costume design, foreign language film, makeup and hairstyling, short films and many others were not awarded during the early Oscar ceremonies. Foreign Language Awards It wasn’t until 1947 when the Oscars began awarding foreign language or “special/honorary” films. Due to there not being any foreign language films in the year of 1953, there was no award given for that category that year. In 1956, the award was given the new title, Best Foreign Language Film Award and was created for non-English speaking
take care of you and get you stuff, and you’re the center of that little microcosmic world. As a well known actor, Chris claims that it is “easy to be so self-critical, saying to yourself, ‘Am I good enough? Am I good looking enough? Am I smart enough?” It is hard, especially on young individuals to live in the tough world of Hollywood. Leonardo Dicaprio Image courtesy of Footwear News
Unlike many other awards, the foreign language film is not awarded to the individual but rather the foreign country as a whole. The Oscars have handed out a total of 67 Foreign Language Film awards, 55 being European films. The year of 1938 marked the first year that a foreign-language film was nominated for best picture. The Grand Illusion, a French film directed by Jean Renoir is a dramatic movie about a group of soldiers that are captured and held in a WWI prison camp. This film marked the first of many other foreign films to be nominated for the Academy Awards best picture. Jean once said, “A director makes only one movie in his life. Then he breaks it into pieces and makes it again.” Jean basically means by this quote that directors have a certain style of directing; after making one movie they make another that is similar in the way it is filmed.
The Non-glamorous Side of Hollywood Making and producing movies is not as easy as it seems. The world of Hollywood is known to be glamorous and wonderful when really it is full of stress and hard work. Some may wonder what it is like to live in Hollywood, producing films, and working with celebrities. Is Hollywood truly that much different than the rest of America? Director of the famous award winning Gone With the Wind, George Cukor says that “It never occurred to me that I could live in California. Now I can’t imagine living anywhere else.” The long hours of writing, filming, directing, and composing music all pay off at the annual Oscar Ceremony. Though difficult to succeed in the world of Hollywood, many are able to achieve their dreams of taking place in movie making. American Actor Chris Pine once said “Hollywood is like living in a weird bubble. A bunch of people take care of you and get you stuff,

Speaking of young individuals in the world of Hollywood, at the age of 17, the one and only American actor, Leonardo DiCaprio started his acting career. Though DiCaprio was cast in several television series such as Roseanne (1988) and The New Lassie (1989) it wasn’t until 1991 that he made his mark in the film world, starring in the low budget horror film Critters 3 (1991). Although it was not that big of a step in his acting career, it was a good way for him to develop his acting skills. Leo is mostly known today for his major role in the heart wrenching film, Titanic (1997) directed by James Cameron. At the Oscar ceremony of 1997, Titanic won a total of 11 Academy Awards including best picture. Though Leo was not nominated for an Oscar for the movie Titanic, being in the movie itself got him greatly recognized in the film world. In the year of 1997, Titanic was known as the highest grossing movie of all time. Leo have been nominated for a total of six Oscars, five being for
best actor and one for best supporting actor. It wasn’t until this year’s Academy Award ceremony that Leo finally won an Oscar for his leading role in the film The Revenant, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. Many believed that Leo should have been recognized for his acting achievements much earlier in his acting career.
Oscars Then and Now
Leo Finally Won an Oscar
As I had said before, it is astonishing how the Oscars and the art of filmmaking have have evolved over 87 years. There is no telling what is to come in the future of movie making. The famous director Steven Spielberg once said, “You have many years ahead of you to create the dreams that we can’t even imagine dreaming. You have done more for the collective unconscious of this planet than you will ever know.”
When Leo accepted his first Oscar he started by thanking the Academy, family, friends, and those who helped the making of The Revenant. Afterwards, he began talking about how The Revenant was about “man’s relationship to the natural world” and how “climate change is real, it is happening right now.” Leo wanted to not only acknowledge his own achievements but how the rest of the world needs to make a change in order to protect the world from global warming. The last words of his speech were as follows, “Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted. Thank you so very much”.
In 1929 the first Academy Awards took place at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel with around 250 people with an award ceremony lasting 15 minutes. Today’s Academy Award ceremony seats several thousand people and if lucky lasts 3 hours long excluding the red carpet.

Planning an Oscar Party? Try making these delicous tuxedo strawberries to serve to your guests. They not only taste good but look good as well. First, gather your ingredients: strawberries, white chocolate, and dark chocolate. Place the strawberries on wax paper on a baking sheet. Then, melt the chocolate by either microvaving or warming over a stove top. Holding the strawberrie stems up, dip the front of each strawberry into the melted white chocolate. Place them on the wax paper to cool. Once cooled, cover the rest of the surface with dark chocolate, leaving a section of the white still showing. Again, let cool. Afterwards, dip a toothpick into the dark chocolate and add “buttons” to each strawberry. Put into the fridge when finished.

Celebrating the Freedom to Read By Sarah Metcalfe

he Great Gatsby, The Catcher in the Rye, To Kill A Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies, Brave New World, Animal Farm, Slaughterhouse-Five, Of Mice and Men, 1984, Lolita, Ulysses, Gone With The Wind, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, For Whom the Bell Tolls. What do all these books have in common? They’re all classics, they’re all critically acclaimed, and they’re all frequently placed on “banned books” lists across the United States and the world. Banned books are simply books that have been outlawed or challenged by bookstores, schools, libraries, and even governments because a group or individual has found it to be objectionable.
Banning a book means that it can’t be freely accessed by thepublic. Banned books range from contemporary bestsellers to centuries-old classics, from children’s fairy tales to adult erotica. The most common reasons for banning books include: racial themes, references to sexuality/sex, homosexuality, alternative lifestyles, negativity, references to drugs, violence, religion affiliations, nudity, science, and offensive language. Many adults ban books to prevent children from reading them and discussing them. Banned Books Week is the last week of September in Canada and the United States, and it celebrates and encourages people to read the books that are frequently banned.
11
Banned Books Week was created in 1982 in response to a sudden surplus of challenged books in bookstores, schools, and libraries. It is sponsored by the American Library Association, the American Booksellers Association, the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the Association of American Publishers, and the National Association of College Stores. It is also endorsed by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. The creator of Banned Books Week, a First Amendment and library activist named Judith Krug, strongly opposed the idea of libraries censoring material they provide to the public.
“You should have access to ideas and information, regardless of your age. If anyone is going to limit or guide a young person, it should be a parent or guardian and only the parent or guardian.” -Judith Krug
The goal of Banned Books Week was to “teach the importance of that exists when restraints are imposed on the availability of our First Amendments rights and the power of literature, to draw attention to the danger that exists when restraints are imposed on the availability of information in a free society.” She believed that banning books was a clear violation of the First Amendment, the right to free speech. She also believed that libraries, schools, and governments should keep all works, no matter how unorthodox or unpopular, free to the public so that people can develop their own opinions. In many parts of the world, the right to free speech and press is severely suppressed.
12
In America, we have it differently. We enjoy a country that celebrates and encourages free speech and press, much more so than the countries listed before. By banning a book, we are challenging that freedom that was given to us. Like I said before, the most common reasons for banning a book include: racial themes, references to sexuality/sex, homosexuality, alternative lifestyles, negativity, references to drugs, violence, religion affiliations, nudity, science, and offensive language. However, there are some books that have been banned for completely baffling reasons.
Banned books and the practice of banning books are different, depending on where you are in the country or world.
How would you describe Banned Books Week to someone who’s never heard of it before?
In an interview with Mrs. Romine, our school librarian,
If you don’t know about Banned Books Week, we did a display last year to kind of bring awareness to Banned Books Week. In different school systems and different environments, individuals and groups have requested that books be removed from the shelves of libraries because ofThis inforg material that that individual or group has found to be objectionable. That could be a book that has some sexual content, offensive language, anything. Many of the classics, our students were surprised to find had appeared repeatedly on banned books lists. It’s also common to find that books that are among the bestsellers, among the top rated books, also appear at the tops of banned books lists.
“In different school systems and different environments, individuals and groups have requested that books be removed from the shelves of libraries because of material that that individual or group has found to be objectionable.” I found out some interesting things about banned books. What is your opinion on Banned Books Week? First of all, I think Banned Books Week is important to bring in awareness about good literature that has stood the test of time, but at certain times in history has found to be objectionable by different groups of people. I think we need to see that people have a right to read whatever they want.
So I guess *laughs* an inverse reaction that happens is that students begin to realize the place to look for good books is on a banned books list. So, I’m not sure that the people who set out to do this realized that they inadvertently brought some notoriety to the very books that they wanted to become unknown. Just like when they tried to ban music for young people years ago. Does Woodford County have any banned books? We do not have any books in our
13
library currently that have been banned. We do have a procedure that if someone objects to a book, that they have a form to fill out and name their particular objection. Then, we’d have a committee that would make a decision about whether the placement of the book should remain. We do have a small, very small, collection of books in our library that because of age appropriateness, we ask students to have their parents sign off in order to give the student permission to read that book. If we were a high school of all 16 year olds and up, we probably wouldn’t worry about that. But, you know, when you look at a book that has some pretty mature content and when even the reviewers or author say that the book is appropriate for a certain age group and up, that’s not us. So, as long as parents agree that the book is appropriate for their child, we have no problem with them reading it. But we do need parental consent for a few of our books. Like I said, that’s a very small collection. As far as that goes, I think that would be the closest thing Woodford County has to full censorship, in terms of being able to read. Should schools and other educational institutions bring
awareness to Banned Books Week and banned books themselves? In a survey taken by 85 people at Woodford County High School, only 17.7% (17) knew what Banned Books Week was. Once I explained to the survey takers what Banned Books Week is, 75.3% (64)
Banned Books Week is an important way to bring awareness to the issue of banned and challenged books. By banning a dent thought and extinguishing expression. As a reader and independent thinker, by banning a book, you’re silencing me and everyone else who could have read that book. You’re denying children the oppurtunity to learn about real issues and history. In some instances, you’re denying that some events that books talk about have even happened. If we were to ban every book that someone found controversial, all the shelves in every library would be barren. You’re denying these children the opportunity to read about real life. Life is depressing and messy and offensive at times. So by denying them the right to read these books, you’re denying them the right to learn about life. As a free nation, we should not allow the banning of books and instead celebrate Banned Books Week.
agreed with it. Only 7 people disagreed with it and 14 people were indifferent to it. If schools properly brought awareness to Banned Books Week and banned books themselves, would as many people still oppose it? If people were explained to what Banned Books Week is, would they still oppose it?
We should look to the future so as not to repeat the past. I’ll leave you with the last line of The Great Gatsby (a book that is frequently banned), “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne ceaselessly into the past.”

This infographic shows several books that have been banned for completely ridiculous reasons.

n the United States, more people subscribe to Netflix than cable TV. Almost everyone has heard of the popular 4 star app that allows people to watch movies and TV shows. The categories range from hilarious comedies to horrendous horror movies. Netflix was founded in the year 1977 and has over 75 million subscribers. One reason they remove them is because not enough people are watching the show. Another reason is that a contract to allow the show has expired so the show gets taken off Netflix.
