Reel Life Film has been around for over a hundred years now, and it’s changed quite a bit since it first came around. In the beginning, when you went to see a movie, you wouldn’t have heard anything, you wouldn’t have thought the editing was any good, and you wouldn’t have known the name of the star actor. Between the 1930s and 1960s, you could have gone to see what are now considered to be some of the greatest movies of all time. Now, if you go to a theater, you will have your choice of a superhero movie, a prequel or sequel based on a highly successful movie or movie series, or a subpar comedy. The film industry has changed a lot since the invention of the camera. A movie-goer in the 1900s wouldn’t recognize the industry today.

The Silent Era

The first major event in the history of film is the creation of the first patented motion picture camera in 1888. This was the spark that created the Silent Era of film and was the beginning of the history of film. Because the technology at the time was still young, movies were severely limited and were unlike the ones we know today. The first films were under a minute long and didn’t have any sound. The release date of the first film to feature animation, “Matches: An Appeal”, is debated, but the earliest possible release date is 1899. The year 1900 is considered the year that movies began to become popular. Film experienced major changes in the year 1910, including an increase in length and the beginning of crediting the actors.

An increase in length allowed films to contain more material and audiences to better connect with the characters. This paved the way to stardom for the actors featured in the film due to the credit they began to receive from the studios. It wasn’t until 1927, when the film “The Jazz Singer”, the first film to feature synchronized dialogue, was released, that any film had sound. It also was the first film to feature singing in addition to spoken dialogue. This is considered the beginning of what is affectionately called The Golden Age of Hollywood. The Jazz Singer brought several changes to the movie industry. The introduction of sound led to an increase in box office profits and the establishment of the supremacy of Hollywood in the movie business due to the movie industries outside of America believing that the introduction of sound would lead to a decrease in the quality found in the silent films.

The Golden Age of Hollywood

The so-called “talkies” quickly replaced silent films in America, leading to The Golden Age of Hollywood. The Golden Age of Hollywood was a period in the history of Hollywood that lasted from the end of the Silent Era to the early 1960s. During The Golden Age, many films that are considered to be classics were released. These films include Gone with the Wind, Citizen Kane, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

During The Golden Age, these studios were critical in the development of a distinctive style of cinematography known as classical Hollywood style. Classical Hollywood style involved continuous, seamless use of the camera and audio. It prevented the camera and sound from being noticed by the viewer, a common problem in the silent era. The Golden The movie industry during The Golden Age was very Age also started the industry tradition different from that of today’s. of big name directors, such as Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, and Frank At the time, there were eight major studios, the Big Capra, a practice that persists to this Five and the Little Three, that owned most of the stu- day. This led to major changes to the business model of the movie industry, allowing independent producers and smaller studios to show their own movies without interference from the Big Eight. The Big Five most powerful studios were MGM, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Paramount, and RKO. The Little Three that were less powerful but still important to the industry were Universal Studios, Columbia Pictures, and United Artists.

Modern Film

Since The Golden Age of Hollywood, three of the top five grossing films of all time when adjusted for inflation have been released. Avatar, released in 2009, is the second highest grossing film of all time and has grossed three billion, 20 million dollars. Star Wars, now known as Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, was released in 1977 and is the third highest grossing film of all time with two billion, 285 dollars. The 1997 non-reissue version of Titanic grossed two billion, 516 million dollars. One of the major advances that the film industry has made is the use of CGI for special effects. CGI, or computer-generated imagery, is widely used in the movie industry today to do things that would have been impossible in The Golden Age. It allows us to see the explosions that Michael Bay is known for, it’s what stopped Life of Pi from being cut short by Pi being mauled by a real tiger, and it is what created the beautiful scenery in The Hobbit. Star Wars Movie Poster

CGI is also widely used in superhero films due to their unrealistic nature. Since the year 2000. there have been over 30 live-action movies based on Marvel comics. Between the years 1944 and 2000, there were six released. There are also 15 planned releases between the time of writing this and 2019.

The Wonderful W

Eighty three years ago, one of the greatest inno-

vators of all time let his curiosity lead him down a new path, developing the first animated movie ever. After creating hundreds of movies that people still watch today, he has provided years of entertainment for families for generations. Loved by people of all ages, ethnicity and genders, Walt Disney was able to create funny, memorable plot lines and characters. He has changed the movie world as we know it. Without him, entertainment would be different and a whole lot less fun. The magical company began in 1932 in the rear of a small office in Los Angeles, California. Walt Disney and his brother, Roy Disney, crafted a series of famous short films known as The Alice

9

Comedies. These short films became quite popular and put Disney’s name on the map. Little did they know their ten dollar a month, back office productions, would one day turn into a multi-million dollar company. Together, they created the first color cartoon, “Flowers and Trees.” This short film won Disney his first of many studio’s Academy Awards. Shortly after, Walt Disney produced the first feature length animated movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Not only was this movie a family favorite that blessed the audience with laughter and singing, but it was one of the first movies to introduce the idea of a “wicked witch” and a beautiful damsel in distress.

World of Disney By: Makayla Devore

With the aid of fair maidens and evil witches, Disney created the idea of a “happily ever after” that is seen in so many movies now. If you’ve ever experienced a Disney movie, you can easily observe the always happy endings. In Snow White, the prince wakes her up with a kiss of true love. In a recent disney movie, Tangled, Rapunzel finds her family and marries the man who saved her from the tower. All these movies end on a good note and everything works out perfectly. The viewer is at peace and knows the end is a happily ever after. Even though Disney’s signature end is a “happily ever after,” the movies have transformed with time. Now, the films still generally end on a

happy note, but they aren’t all about helpless damsels in distress being saved by a future husband from an evil witch or family member. Disney has started to create animated movies that reflect present day societal issues. In recent Disney movies like Inside Out and Big Hero Six, you see ideas of depression and loss of close relatives. Taking a closer look at Disney’s Inside and Out, the main character Riley is an 11 year old girl who is depressed about her parents’ decision to move to Minnesota. The movie focuses on the emotions inside her head, creating them into characters named Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness. You see the way her “emotions” react to the situation and how sadness, fear, anger and

disgust can over take the joy. Although Disney’s ways of dealing with these unhappy emotions are a little far fetched, it is still a very significant change that has occurred through time. The Disney industry has tied their movies to present day issues instead of strictly basing them off of fantasy. Besides this transformation of ideas and endings, Disney is still known for being loved by people of all ages. From old to young, the movies are created for the enjoyment of as many people as possible. But how can one movie appeal to that many people at the same time? Especially animated movies that are supposedly made for kids? This quality is what makes Disney so lovable, enjoyable and popular. Of course tots and young children are attracted to the happy songs, bright colors and easily followable plot lines of Disney movies, as are teens and young adults, but what really attracts adults are Disney’s underlying messages. If you’ve ever watched and paid close attention to these movies, you can sometimes get jokes and witty comments made by characters. Producers are aware that these comments will not be interpreted by the children watching the movies, but that hopefully adults watching will pick up on them. Another strong attraction for adults are Disney’s intrinsic themes. An example of this is in one of Disney’s most recent movies, Frozen. According to www.sstimes.net, of the 6 million Frozen movie goers, more than half were adults. Besides people being drawn in by the memorable soundtrack and adorable characters, there had to be something else luring them in. For many, it was the theme of a sister’s love being just as strong as that of a suitor’s. Unlike in other

Disney has created hundreds of movies since 1937.

Disney movies, the sister was responsible for saving the princess instead of a prince/ man. Even though the movie still had the cliche “happily ever after” finish, it was unique and emphasized the strength of family. The deeper theme of the movie captivated the minds of adults. Along with being an overall great movie producer, Disney is known for creating unique movies that appeal to everyone. With fun characters and cheerful songs, they’re hard not to love. Through time Disney has evolved with society and developed films about relevant issues instead of just princesses and evil villians. Disney provides lively entertainment that brings fun to the movie world. One of these light hearted movies are perfect for a family night.

he human spirit is more powerful than any drug and that is what needs to be nourished: with work, play, friendship, family. THESE are the things that matter.” -Robin Williams 645 people in Woodford county high school took the time to take my survey. The choices for the survey were Robin Williams, Bobbie Christina, Leonard Nimoy, and an other option. We were all impressed by his excellent performances which showed off his comedic and dramatic process. Robin Williams was best known as America’s favorite funny man and a true philosopher that could carry out wisecracking humor with extreme depth.

ransported to A Hospital in Roswell, Georgia. She also said they found no evidence to confirm the incident was caused by drugs or alcohol, unlike her mother’s death in 2012. Doctors placed Bobbie in a medically induced coma after realizing her brain function was “significantly diminished”, and her family was told any full recovery would be a miracle. The Georgia Medical Examiner’s office announced on September 25, 2015, that it had found the cause and of Bobbi Kristina Brown’s death but a superior court order prevented the office from releasing any details to the public or the media.

He will always be remembered for his many comedic works that are proof of how much he loved making people laugh and his intense films which made him known as an actor with great depth and sensitivity. Unfortunately, Robin Williams just joined a long list of actors including Leonard Nimoy and Bobbi Kristina Brown, that have left us over the past few years. Leonard Nimoy was an American actor and film director. He was most known for his role as Mr. Spock in Star Trek, a character he portrayed in television and film from a pilot episode in 1964 to his final film performance that was released in 2013. Bobbi Kristina Brown was an American reality television star and a media personality, singer, and actress. She was the daughter of singers Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston, her parents fame kept Bobbi Kristina in the public eyes and on tv, including her appearances on the reality show Being Bobby Brown. The death of these actors is both sad, but it is also shrouded in mystery. On January 31, 2015, Gordon Bobbie’s husband and a friend found Bobbi face down in a bathtub in her Georgia home. Gordon began CPR until emergency medical services personnel arrived. According to the police spokes-

Likewise Robin Williams death is not fully disclosed to the public. Williams committed suicide on August 11, 2014, at his home in Paradise Cay, California, at the age of 63. In the initial report released on August 12, the Marin County Sheriff ’s Office deputy coroner said Williams had hung himself with a belt and died from suffocation. It was revealed after his death that Williams had been suffering from severe depression, and had been sleeping in a different room from his wife due to restlessness and anxiety that his Parkinson’s disease had given him. The final autopsy report, given on November 2014, stated that Williams had committed suicide as initially thought. The report also said that Williams had been suffering a recent increase in paranoia. An examination of his brain tissue showed the presence of Lewy body dementia, that affects sleep, and behavioral characteristics. Williams’ doctors reportedly believe that Lewy body dementia was the main factor that led to his suicide. Unlike Bobbi and Robin, Nimoy had a less dramatic death. On February 2014, Nimoy revealed to the public that he had been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease also known as COPD, a condition he blamed a smoking addiction he had given up about 30 years earlier. On February 19, 2015, after being in and out of hospitals for the past several months, Nimoy was taken to UCLA Medical Center for the chest pains he was experiencing . Nimoy passed away because of problems caused by COPD on February 27, 2015, at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife; two children, six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and his older brother, Melvin. was visited by nearly 300 family members, friends and former colleagues like Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine, and J. J. Abrams. Though his best friend William Shatner could not attend, he was represented by his daughters. I was wondering which actor was missed the most out of these three. Which actors death was most surprising. which of these actors death was most unexpected, and which of these actors deaths was most covered by the media. I decided the best way to figure this out was to hold a survey, and let’s just say the results were staggering. 645 people in Woodford county high school took the time to take my survey. The choices for the survey were Robin Williams, Bobbie Christina, Leonard Nimoy, and an other option. Robbin William took the Cake on all of the questions, with 85.8% of people feeling that he was most famous 84.6% of people believing that he was most missed 83.8 % of people thought that Robin Williams death was most unexpected and 80.8% think that his death was most covered by the media. Every year we lose actors that we feel helped shape us as a person, or that were our role model, obviously Robin Williams was the biggest role model in the lives of woodford county high school students, and he will be greatly missed by everyone, but we cannot forget other actors, that may have shaped us such as Bobbi kristina or Leonard Nimoy and all the others. - in memory of robin williams, leonard nimoy, and Bobbi kristina and others By: Parker Rayborne https://www.google.

Date Night

Dilemma

by Jessy Sanders

17

John and Makayla plan on having a fun date night at home. They begin scrolling through movies on Netflix to find the perfect one. Makayla immediately wants to watch The Notebook.John is reluctant; he wants to make her happy but the new Saw movie just came out. Women tend to prefer the classic love story for a date night; while men tend to prefer action and gore. After several minutes of awkward silence; John gives in to the classic most argued date night movie, The Notebook. So why does Makayla love the notebook and John hate it?

18

It’s the classic story, rich city girl Ally Hamilton meets poor country boy Noah Calhoun and they fall in love. Noah promises to build her a house, and even though they are separated by unforeseen circumstances for many years he still loves her. In this movie Makayla see a man that is in love with a woman and practically kisses the ground she walks on. Even when Ally leaves and completely forgets about him he still protects and cares for her. Makayla also see a symbol of everlasting love when he builds the house he promised for her. The determination Noah has for their love is truly shown when he writes to her every day for a year.

19

Even after Ally realizes she’s in love with Noah he doesn’t stop showing it. Ally is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s; Noah visits her every day even though she doesn’t remember him. In the end she remembers him for the first, they hold hands and die together. Women love this classic romance because they dream of having a Noah that will give them unconditional love. Noah represents an ideal man that no other can live up to.This would be the reason it is chosen for most date nights, women are attempting to convince me to take a tip or two from Noah.

John’s perspective could be considered quite different. He sees Noah as a helpless man chasing a girl that treated him awful. John see a man wasting all of his time obsessing over her, and when they thought he was over her; he builds a house for her and she still doesn’t love him. Men see Noah controlled by this woman and almost dependent of her. When she finally comes around he doesn’t even question if he should stay with her. Even after her completely forgetting about him, he still loves her. He sees a woman that married another man and not caring about Noah. Still in the end when Noah can escape this madness and have a normal life he stays with her. He refuses to die without her by his side even when she can’t even remember him. Men realize Noah is an impractical imagination and even if he was; they certainly wouldn’t be the one that made it possible. John sees males needs are disregarded in the movie while the woman lives the dream. After Makayla and John watch The Notebook they’re up for another movie.SInce John just had to sit through three hours of Makayla’s sobbing and a chick flick; he gets to pick the movie. Although she wants to watch Dear John, he choses Saw. Saw begins with two men waking up from unconsciousness

Research suggest women like Makayla often have a hard time differencing imaginations from reality. That is why when picking a movie Makayla chose The Notebook and John chose Saw. Makayla dreams of John worshipping the ground she walks on, forgiving her for every mistake she makes, and loving her unconditionally.

chained to a pipe in a filthy bathroom. These two men figure out they have been kidnapped by a serial killer named Jigsaw. Soon they realize they have to torture themselves to survive Jigsaw’s dreadful game. While the men experience pain, “Jigsaw”s attempting to teach them to appreciate their life. John is instantly intrigued by the movie. He compares himself to the two men trapped. John thinks about things he would have done differently and asks himself if he would kill someone to live. Throughout the movie they play different games to stay alive. This adds an interesting twist from most scary movies. John can’t seem to take his eyes off the screen when the man begins cutting off his foot to survive as he quickly runs out of time. Suddenly he hears an “ewwwww” and looks over to see Makayla’s horrified face. Makayla thinks to herself how could someone possibly enjoy this? She’s disgusted by the blood and violence and honestly thinks the “Jigsaw” is stupid. The games they play just seem like an escalated version of the show Survivor, except they don’t win a million dollars at the end. She thinks to herself, if “Jigsaw” wants to teach them how important life is then why is he wasting his doing this. Makayla hates this movie besides the violence, it’s just not practical. he wasting his doing this. Makayla hates this movie besides the violence, it’s just not practical.

Girls like “chick flicks” because it plays love perfectly and that all they want. Girls hate Saw because the plotline to her is boring and generally gross. Jigsaw would never trap people to teach them a lesson on life when he should take a tip or two himself. John though is intrigued by Jigsaw and the men attempting to survive. It inspires him to love the life he lives. He thinks Saw is different from any scary movie and wonders if there is actually someone like Jigsaw out there. Makayla was just happy the movie ended when it did, if not someone may have puked. John was thrilled at the end and ready to go out and live life to the fullest. Both had different opinions about the two movies but that’s how it often is. Women like movies with romance and a happy ending. Men like movies with action and gory. The differences can often cause controversy in a home but it’s important to remember each gender has different opinions. Overall is was a good date night for the couple.
