2013-2014 Annual Report

President’s Letter “ O N E P E R SO N C A N M A KE A D I F F E RE N CE , A N D E V E R YO N E SH O U L D TR Y.” —JOHN F. KENNEDY

Dear friends,

I Kristen Brown

MISSION The Junior League of Oklahoma City, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

VISION The Junior League of Oklahoma City, Inc. will empower volunteers to impact our community and enrich lives.

FOCUS

t has been a privilege to serve as the 2013-2014 President of the Junior League of Oklahoma City (JLOC). When I embarked on this journey, I had no idea the impact this experience would make on my life. I am incredibly proud to be a part of this organization that is now heading into its 87th year. It has been a gift to lead, to serve and to learn. I am forever grateful for the opportunity and will cherish the memories and friendships I have made. I know I could not have done this without the support of my family and friends. They have been there to cheer me on every step of the way. Each one of you has made a difference in my life and also in our League. As I reflect on this past year, I am inspired even more by the amazing members of the JLOC. Our members strive each and every day to enhance the quality of life around us while putting our mission into action. They promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women and improve the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Thank you for sharing the gift of yourself, your talents, knowledge and experience to make sure our community and organization keeps on growing for decades to come. You have taught me more than I ever could have hoped to learn. Thank you to the Board of Directors for giving 110% each and every day. You have made a difference in my life and in the JLOC. I know the League is in good hands with Kristi Leonard, incoming President, and Nazette Zuhdi, President-Elect. Their enthusiasm and leadership will inspire us as we head into the future and our new focus of health. The JLOC has closed an important chapter in our history. Ten years of “Changing Lives Through Literacy.” Thank you to the many volunteers, community partners, past presidents and donors who have helped us make an impact on literacy in Oklahoma City. I hope as you read this issue you can see the scope of what we have accomplished these past 10 years. A special thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate this milestone and helped create our lasting gift to the community, “Goodnight OKC.” Without the vision of a special member, and the group effort of the book committee and support of our sponsors, we would still be at the drawing board. One person truly can make a difference, and together that difference is powerful. Thank you to our members, sponsors, partners, Community Advisory Board and donors for your continued support. We are grateful for your commitment to our community and for helping us build a better Oklahoma City. Each of you has made a difference in our League and in our community. Thank you again for this opportunity to serve this wonderful organization. The chance to lead over 1,300 remarkable members and serve the community I love has been a special time I will treasure always. Thank you for making that difference for me. Gratefully,

Changing Lives Through Literacy

JLOC Celebrates End of Literacy Campaign with Children’s Book

he Junior League of Oklahoma City marks the end of a 10 year focus area of “Changing Lives Through Literacy” with the publication of a children’s book. “Goodnight OKC” is a 32 page publication written by members of the Junior League. The book’s colorful and vibrant illustrations are by Margaret Reynolds Hoge, a local artist and past JLOC President, and features Oklahoma City’s landmarks and points of destination. The book not only highlights the extraordinary city that

we live in, but also the importance of literacy at school and in the home. The book was created to honor the milestones the League has made in literacy from 2004 to 2014. During this time, the Junior League has donated over $600,000 through community projects, served 37,337 children and distributed 116,103 books in Oklahoma City. League members launched the book in two separate events. A private party on May 7 was held at the home of local supporter John Kennedy. Those in attendance were entertained by the music of Jamie Bramble as they mingled

orn and raised in Oklahoma City, I was so excited to have been asked to illustrate the book. I love Oklahoma City and I love the League. What a wonderful combination. The League has touched the lives of so many people in Oklahoma City - whether it is the individual organizations and people there or the League members sharing their hearts and knowledge throughout the city. I had so much fun painting each and every page. We live in such a fun city! I was sad when the last page was finished and even started thinking of what other pages we could possibly add publishing deadlines won out. I love the book. I have had so much fun having people tell me what their favorite page is, and it’s never the same one.

May General Meeting

T

he final General Membership Meeting of the year was held on May 13 at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club. More than 200 Provisionals, Actives and Sustainers and special guests attended the meeting. The meeting room was all decked out in a circus theme as we celebrated “The Greatest League on Earth” with 71 ladies from the 2013-2014 Provisional Class receiving active status. We also welcomed 129 ladies to the 20142015 Provisional Class. Members said thank you to the outgoing board and welcomed in the new board. We also watched the passing of the gavel through past presidents to incoming president, Kristi Leonard. The meeting was especially touching as we conclude

and say “goodnight” to our 10-year focus in literacy and look forward to a new focus in health.

Transfer Committee Goes Out to the Ball Park BY TRACEY FREDERICK COWAN

T

he Transfer Committee wrapped up a great year with their final event at an OKC RedHawks baseball game on May 8. It was a beautiful night at the ball park, and they enjoyed food, great company, a winning game and even a quick visit from Cooper the mascot. They had a great group of Transfers, Sustainers, Actives and Provisionals to celebrate the end of another great Junior League year.

Transfer Committee Co-Chair’s Amy Reen and Tracey Frederick hosted the group in a suite that was generously donated for their use. Active member Kate Ward was the lucky attendee to get a foul ball that landed in our suite. The Transfer Committee is thankful for a wonderful 2013-2014 committee, and is excited to have so many wonderful transfers join our League.

W

hat a wonderful year! It seems like yesterday when I first met the incoming Provisionals at the 20132014 Welcome Celebration. They were all beautiful and eager to join the League. I couldn’t wait to watch them grow throughout the year. The year flew by quickly and we are graduating 71 phenomenal women to active membership. This year, the ladies chose a vintage circus theme, “The Greatest League on Earth” to wrap up their year. From popcorn, balloons, tickets and animal crackers the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club was all decked out. The women did a magnificent job bringing the theme to life. Following the General Meeting, we headed to West

to celebrate the year and cheer on the Thunder. Congratulations on going active to all 71 ladies!

New Focus, New Tagline Women Building a Better Oklahoma City

l

By Kristi Leonard, JLOC President

ast summer, President Kristen Brown tasked the Communications Council with writing a new tagline to replace “Changing Lives Through Literacy.” After many brainstorm sessions, discussion with the JLOC’s Community Advisory Board, and input from the Board of Directors, the Council came back with a list of taglines that celebrated the League’s new health focus. The list was extensive, and all of them were engaging. During one brainstorming session, a question was brought to the group: Instead of creating a tagline centered on the focus,

Kristi Leonard, JLOC President

what if we wrote one that reflected the work of the JLOC as a whole? That way, it could be used for many years to come, rather than face this exercise every time the League changes its community focus. Talk about a light bulb moment! It makes perfect sense to create a motto with which not only League members could identify, but also one that the general public could remember. After all, educating the Oklahoma City community about the Junior League is one of the ongoing objectives in JLOC’s strategic plan. Changing the tagline every time we change our focus can confuse our message. Back to the drawing board! Led by

Communications Vice President Jenifer Cefalo, the group came up with more ideas, and submitted a new list to the Board of Directors. After thoughtful discussion, the Board approved a new tagline. It encompasses the core of the Junior League of Oklahoma City’s mission and purpose. It will stand the test of time and hopefully become synonymous with the name Junior League of Oklahoma City. Women Building a Better Oklahoma City. It’s who we are. It’s what we do. It’s perfect. Thank you to the 2013-2014 Communications Council for its dedication to this project.

While Whiz Kids is not a new project of JLOC, it was in need of a few updates. Heather met with the site leader and together they made a few adjustments to help the agency volunteers collaborate better with the JLOC volunteers to make a greater impact on the community.” Jenna Hudson and Sabrina Buccolo, nominated by Blair Bradley. “These two ladies went above and beyond to help make Kids in the Kitchen a huge success! Amy and her husband generously donated the time and cost to create the videos for the Annual Member Luncheon. Amy has also coordinated to have the May transfer event donated—she is incredibly welcoming and generous.” Blair Bradley, nominated by Amy McDougall. “Blair Bradley worked to navigate and implement the new Provisional program while she has been PAT Chair and Vice Chair. She accepted the position not knowing exactly what the job would entail with all the new changes on the horizon. She has been incredibly organized and has transitioned the entire League’s program seamlessly.”

Welcome New Health Based Projects for 2014-2015 A Soldier’s Story

To encourage positive mental health and interaction to veterans who are hospitalized at OKC’s VA Hospital. Volunteers will work with patients in a group, playing games (cards, dominos, bingo, scrabble). Volunteers also plan and participate in parties for the patients, especially around the holidays and big events like the Super Bowl, to help boost morale.

Amachi: Big Brothers Big Sisters

The goal of this project is to match JLOC volunteers up with a Little Sister to mentor throughout the school year. All Little Sisters chosen for the Amachi program will have or have had an incarcerated parent. JLOC volunteers will talk with the Littles about their classes, do homework, read together or play on the playground. The goal of the program is to build trust and a friendship and expose the children in the program to new opportunities and options.

Eat Better, Move More

Volunteers would facilitate a 12-week program provided by the Oklahoma Healthy Aging Initiative for seniors and their caregivers consisting of mini-talks on nutrition and walking, emphasizing the benefits of making healthier food choices and ultimately improving their quality of life. Volunteers will use a preprogrammed guide to facilitate the diet and exercise classes.

Family Fitness Nights @ OKC Educare

Volunteers will develop and implement a monthly program with health-related activities for students and their families utilizing resources provided by the Head Start program. Sample topics include

20 JULY 2014

safety and injury prevention in physical activity, healthy/new food choices, and effective activities to “get moving.”

Heath Literacy

The purpose of this project is to promote health literacy among school-aged children at Johnson Elementary School. The Schools for Healthy Lifestyles focus areas are: physical activity and fitness; nutrition education and awareness; tobacco use prevention; safety and injury prevention and oral health education. JLOC volunteers act as health educators and teach the health literacy program twice a month for two hours during each session.

Healthy Practices for Survivors of Domestic Abuse

Volunteers will develop and implement a weekly program to educate the women living in the YWCA shelter about healthy lifestyle choices. Utilizing the Healthy People 2020 Initiative and the 17 areas identified, volunteers will facilitate classes covering topics such as food safety, nutrition and weight status, access to health services, sleep health, substance abuse, etc.

“Healthy You” Parents’ Night Out

Volunteers will plan and provide respite and relaxation to the parents and caregivers of children at The Children’s Hospital. The monthly activity will be planned and organized by the volunteers for parents/caregivers. Activities should be focused on allowing the individual to put their health and wellness first for a short amount of time.

Kids in the Kitchen/Top Chef

Volunteers would work with a group of Boys and Girls Club members weekly,

teaching them about healthy foods and the preparation of healthy snacks. They would also promote and encourage participation in some kind of physical activity – such as dance.

Kids on Track

Volunteers will train with members of the Boys and Girls Club of Oklahoma County (ages 10-18) to run a 5k fun run. Utilizing the Triple Play Walk/Run challenge curriculum provided by the Club, volunteers will educate club members on healthy activities to support their running goals, encourage a fitness routine for participants to use throughout the week, and monitor their progress. Volunteers will also plan the final 5k run event for members.

OCCC Adult Literacy

JL volunteers will work with adults, who are enrolled in either the GED or ESL classes, to help improve their English, math and literacy skills. These are motivated adults who are enrolled in these classes in order to increase their likelihood of finding better paying jobs.

Prom Night at Children’s Hospital

A healthy self-image is a massive challenge for pre-teens and teens who experience a sudden injury/illness or who suffer from chronic illness. Volunteers would plan and execute a day of prom activities for children who may not have the opportunity to attend their own school social events.

Summer Food and Fun

Volunteers will prepare a “Summer Food and Fun” meal weekly during the summer school break with approximately 12 Family Junction Youth Shelter residents,

ages 12-17. Volunteers will plan the menu and include a fun yet educational healthrelated activity around the menu’s theme.

The Reading Rainforest

The goal of this project is to get children and families out of their houses, away from the television or video games, and spark their interest in books and nature. Volunteers will read nature-related books and then lead the children in a craft and/ or activity of some type as a follow up to the story.

Whiz Kids

The Whiz Kids program works with 1st3rd graders throughout the school year on their reading skills because an Oklahoma law now requires 3rd graders to be at or above the 3rd grade reading level before they can move on to the 4th grade. The goal of this placement is to provide support to tutors who are already in place in the community.

Focus

Say “Goodnight” To Our Outgoing Projects BY SARA SWEET

W Cultural Literacy with the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Library System

Prime Time with St. Ann’s Assisted Living Center

hen we create our projects, we do so with the ultimate goal of turning them back to our partnering agencies and the greater community. This year marks the end of our 10 year focus on improving literacy in Oklahoma City. Now, we look forward to beginning a new focus on improving health. In an effort to implement health projects immediately, we are launching an unusually high number of community projects with the end of this League year – six of our beloved traditional projects, and two within Variety Pack. Many Junior League members have donned sombreros and tasted wonderful new cuisines with participants of our Cultural Literacy project. We have been humbled and inspired by the incredibly bright star students of the KIPP Academy. We have enjoyed playing cards, putting together scrapbooks and visiting with the ladies and gentlemen of Prime Time, many of whom remind us of our own grandparents. We have taken a self-esteem Journey with the Girl Scouts. We have created

a must-attend summertime event – the magical Storytime Safari with the Oklahoma City Zoo, and we have flown high with the children of JETS. During the April GMM, representatives from these agencies received a check from the JLOC to help sustain these projects and as a thank you to each one of our partnering agencies.

Outgoing JLOC Projects:

• Cultural Literacy with the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Library System • KIPP with the KIPP Academy • Prime Time with St. Ann’s Assisted Living Center • Journeys with Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma • Wild Tuesdays Storytime Safari with the Oklahoma City Zoo • JETS with Skyline Urban Ministry • Variety Pack - Photography for Workday with Rebuilding Together • Variety Pack – Lights on After School with the Oklahoma after School Network

Community Enrichment’s Fascinating Journey

t

By Vi Le

he Community Enrichment Committee (formerly known as the Grants Committee) had a fascinating journey to its present day form. When the Fundraising chair, Ashley Jackson, asked me to be on her council in 2012, the original direction

was to look solely at third-party grants to benefit the League. After a successful fall of fundraising and planned grants to commemorate the JLOC’s 85th Anniversary, this committee’s work began in earnest to determine what its work would be. Through the work of a tireless committee and our patient sustaining advisor of

two years, Ann-Clore Duncan, we spent many months of consideration to land on what were the needs of our greater Oklahoma City community, our community partners and what impact our collective members wanted to make. A typical meeting would have a set time to debate and three giant whiteboards with multiple colored markers to evidence all the deliberation. A casualty of one of the meetings was learning a bit too late that one entire board was written in permanent marker. With a little elbow grease and spray cleaner, we managed to conquer this hurdle too! With this in mind, the quote above embodies the leadership of this committee

and the Board of Directors, in completely changing directions, in their journey in leadership. The committee sought very clearly to support the financial needs of the community where the JLOC could make an impact via a specific, annual monetary gift to one or more of our community partners. Time and time again, we heard that our members wanted to see and hear specifically about where our fundraising dollars were going. We learned through the vetting process that other similar-sized Leagues were making community enrichment part of their community commitment. With this goal in mind, we continued our work this year with formalizing the community enrichment application and award process. We chose to narrow our applicant pool to our current and past community partners with no preconceived notions of how a perfect applicant or project would look. All of our applicants were professional, impressive and most of all, well-deserving. We struggled to narrow down to our three winners of $5000 each: Metropolitan Library System Summer Reading Program, Oklahoma

City Community College for Kids Education Program, and Whiz Kids of Oklahoma Program. You can take credit for putting a library book in a child’s hands this summer, for providing tuition scholarships for an OCCC College for Kids attendee and for building Whiz Kids sites to provide books, curriculum, educational games, snacks and supplies to every metropolitan school. Very exciting! I give credit to my two years of committee members, especially our Sustainers Ann-Clore Duncan, Susie Graves and Cindy Riesen and fundraising chairs Ashley Jackson and Amy Parrish, who offered solace that changing direction was supported and encouraged. As Provisionals, Actives and Sustainers, I encourage you to give to the League generously in your stewardship of dollars and time, and watch it reap rewards many times over.
