President’s Letter Dear fellow Junior League of Oklahoma City members,
MISSION The Junior League of Oklahoma City, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
VISION The Junior League of Oklahoma City, Inc. will empower volunteers to impact our community and enrich lives.
FOCUS Women Building a Better Oklahoma City
Happy New League Year! Each of you has contributed time, talent and treasure to make the 2015-16 year a smashing success, and I hope you are taking some time for yourself to enjoy the summer with your family and friends. I also know that many of you are working diligently right through the summer heat, stocking the Pet Food Pantry, checking car seats with Safe Kids, and making big plans for Mistletoe Market and Speaker in the City, and your effort is appreciated. For the upcoming year, I chose a theme of “Rooted in Oklahoma City”. I love the rich history of the Junior League of Oklahoma City, and I am both humbled and proud to be a small part of it. To our sustaining members, we are ever so grateful for your continued support and also for being our role models in the community, as you truly are “Women Building a Better Oklahoma City”. To our Active and Provisional members, I am so thankful for all of your efforts to continue to grow the Junior League into a healthy, influential and abiding entity. The Mission of The Junior League states that we are an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. I want to reiterate the word TR AINING because it’s what we do best. While serving as President-Elect, the most valuable tool Nazette gave me was her enthusiasm for new ideas. Likewise, our Sustaining Advisor, Sue Ann Hyde, has a mantra for us…Be Fearless. As an organization whose mission is focused on training, I encourage each of you to get creative, hold yourself in the highest regard, and ask yourself, “What can I do to make the Junior League the best it can be?” I also want to know what the leaders of the Junior League can do to give you the best possible member experience. Each of you – whether you are a Sustaining, Active, or Provisional member – is valued, and the Junior League of Oklahoma City could not accomplish its mission without you. I also encourage you to foster relationships with each other by participating in a committee, attending Mistletoe Market Preview Party, participating in trainings, and attending the Legacy and Legends celebration. These are all wonderful ways to meet new friends and get to know the women who are transforming our community. It’s summertime, which means baseball. As a small child growing up in Springfield, Illinois, I became a fan of the Chicago Cubs early on and have been a lifelong baseball fan. Babe Ruth once said, “Never let the fear of striking out get in your way.” Ladies, I encourage you to swing for the fences this year. With much appreciation,
Sara Williams Sweet President, Junior League of Oklahoma City 2016-17
MEET YOUR EDITOR Ilana joined the Junior League of Oklahoma City as a provisional in 2010 and has been an Active member since 2011. Ilana was born and raised in Oklahoma City and is a graduate of Putnam City North High School. She then moved to Middletown, Connecticut where she attended Wesleyan University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History in 2006. After college she returned to Oklahoma and ob-

tained her law degree from the University of Oklahoma in 2009. Although she has no formal training in journalism, Ilana’s degrees in History the Law mean that she has spent and continues to spend much of her time devoted to research and writing. She is looking forward to putting these skills to work in a different fashion this year and is very excited about wielding her proverbial red pen.
Ilana is married to Dan Sharpe. Together they have two beautiful children, a daughter Lorelei, age 2 and a son, Gabriel age 1. In addition to her role in the Junior League, Ilana serves on the Board of Directors for the Arts Council of Oklahoma City and is a proud graduate of Leadership Oklahoma City LOYAL Class VIII. When Ilana isn’t busy in her legal practice she enjoys exploring different corners of the world along with her husband.

May General Meeting
t
BY FARESHTEH HAMIDI
he Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club has historically complimented JLOC events with an unmatched air of elegance; thus making this year’s final General Membership Meeting a fitting farewell to 2015-16 President, Nazette Zuhdi-Cleaver and her Board of Directors. The May General Membership Meeting

perfectly showcased the exciting year the JLOC created and the teamwork required to build a healthy community. Prior to the meeting, members were given the chance to learn about different committee opportunities and join those which interested them. Committees provide members the unique chance to share their talents and interests within the JLOC while getting to know other members they
might otherwise not have met. The outgoing Provisional class worked hard to create a magical ‘Alice in Wonderland’ themed meeting, complete with a photo booth in which members could dress as characters

from the story. The dining hall mimicked the most stupendous tea party, and the centerpieces included Mad Hatter hats, clocks, and flowers to round out the theme. No detail was overlooked in the colorful recreation of this beloved tale, and with that, we can be certain that the graduating Provisional

class will become some of the finest Active members to date. Members were updated on JLOC’s community projects and events, with a slideshow presented before Nazette’s outgoing speech capturing many of the year’s greatest moments. The end of this meeting marked the transition from 2015-16 leadership to 2016-17 leadership, with Sara Sweet as incoming President, and her Board consisting of some of JLOC’s most capable leaders. A handful of JLOC’s favorite Active members took on sustaining membership that evening. While sad to see them go, JLOC is always thrilled to share its brightest members with the rest of the community, confident in knowing the traits acquired throughout membership will be evident in all their endeavors. Another noteworthy moment from May’s meeting was the traditional passing of the gavel. All living past Presidents who were able to attend lined the country club stage to pass the presidential gavel from one end down to Sara, who then gave her introductory speech as President. Dozens of women who have since moved on from Active membership reconvened for this important custom, thus proving the lasting impact of this organization on its membership. 1. Kids on Track Finishes Strong by Bria Hanlon
W
ow! What a successful year Kids on Track had this past school year! It was so great to see many of the same smiling faces come back for the second year, and also a joy to have many new participants. This is the second year for this project, and it just keeps getting better and better. Over the past two months we have had many exciting moments. We had 10 of our Kids on Track members participate in the Kids Memorial Marathon in April. Project Manager, Bria Hanlon, and Kids on Track volunteer, Sierra George accompanied the kids to this event and they had such a blast. The Kids Marathon is a 1 mile fun run, followed by a big play area with snowcones and popcorn for the kids to enjoy after their race.
6 JULY 2016
JLOC members Sierra George and Bria Hanlon enjoy a refreshing snowcone with the Kids on Track participants! We also gave the kids a tour through the Memorial to explain to them why we run this Marathon. Many of the kids were still talking about how much fun they had weeks after, so it is safe to say this will be something Kids on Track keeps doing for years to come. We held our final event on May 9 at the Boys and Girls Club on their outside track. We invited all parents to come, and we had quite a few come out and cheer on the kids. We make this final event really special for the kids. It will be hard to
top this one next year! Each of our participants received a gym bag filled with healthy snacks, Gatorade, socks, and a brand new pair of KD tennis shoes. The look on their faces during this gift giving was priceless! Each and every volunteer was so overjoyed by how happy and grateful the kids were!! We are looking forward to starting up again in the Fall, and Ms. Sheila over at the Boys and Girls Club has informed me that we already have kids signed up to participate again! Go Kids on Track!

Spotlight on Sustainer Debby Hampton
i
BY ILANA SHARPE
recently had the opportunity to chat with Sustainer Debby Hampton about her work in the Oklahoma City community. Debby is a woman who has dedicated her professional life to the non-profit sector. Her devotion to the non-profit arena began when she applied for a job that required her to have a degree, one which she had not yet obtained. Although still in college, she talked her way into that job, and the rest, as they say, is history. Debby is truly impassioned about her work in the Oklahoma City community. For many years she worked with the Central Oklahoma City Chapter of the American Red Cross as their Chief Executive Officer. Her tenure with the Red Cross coincided with a very difficult time in Oklahoma City’s history, the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. While the American Red Cross has a storied history of helping with natural disasters, prior to the bombing there were no guidelines for how to deal with a terrorist attack. Sadly, the United States is now well versed in such matters, but at that time Oklahoma City was left to figure out the way to best help those in need. That period is remembered now as a time when the Oklahoma City community came together in their efforts to bring aide to the victims as well as the responders, and the Red Cross and the JLOC were at the heart of it. Debby told me that when she went to recruit volunteers, one of the first groups she turned to was the JLOC. The Red Cross was in need of trained volunteers who they could put to work with little direction and know that the job would get done. Debby said that she knew that “there was no way JLOC members would let this community down.” She recruited Provisionals, Ac-

tives and Sustainers alike who came and worked endless hours for the Red Cross doing whatever needed to be done. Most people are unaware of the number of man hours the JLOC volunteered during the aftermath of the bombing. The JLOC in fact ended up being one of the biggest donors to the Red Cross efforts during that time simply by doing what they do best, helping the community. When it came time to think about how she could repay the JLOC, the best way she could think to honor those women was to become a member herself so that is exactly what she did! Today Debby continues her work in the community as Chief Executive Officer of United Way of Central Oklahoma. Her efforts with the United Way are essential to staying on top of the most critical health and social service needs in Central Oklahoma. One of the many ways in which it accomplishes its goals is through the research department, which is constantly researching those needs of the Oklahoma City
community allowing Debby and her staff at the United Way to know what efforts they should be funding. The goal as she explained it to me is not just to put a band-aid on the problem, but to fix the underlying issues. Oklahoma, like many places has a population with a large substance abuse problem and many mentally ill patients who are not getting the care they need, a problem which has been exacerbated by the recent statewide budget cuts. Debby and her staff are hard at work helping non-profit agencies across the state prepare for these budget cuts in the most effective way so that they can continue to help those in Oklahoma who need it most. Debby is a native Oklahoman. She has two adult sons and she currently resides in Edmond with her husband. Through her work in the community she continues to be a wonderful example for our members, new and old; we are lucky to call her one of our own. Thank you Debby for all you do!

Provisional Class Receives Active Status By Amy McDougall

he Provisional Admissions and Training (PAT) team has been through a year of challenges and successes but we are thrilled and honored to announce that a record number of 113 ladies have successfully completed our 2015-16 Provisional Program! This is the third year of our new Provisional training program since the closing of the Remarkable Shop. PAT is constantly striving to improve our program content and this year was no exception. Our goals this year included

facilitating personal connections, giving the ladies all the tools they need to be successful Active and Sustaining members, and laying the foundation for these ladies to value the benefits of life long membership. This year we implemented a new policy requiring applicants to attend a Prospective Member event before applying and paying online. We have found that this process was significantly helpful to prospective members and sponsors and more than likely contributed to the reduced decline/drop rate this year. With class retention in mind, social events and creating opportunities for the ladies to make connections were a priority and a part of the required course content. Beginning with our team building event, which was facilitated by Camp Shiloh, our “Leopardy” (League Jeopardy) game based on JLOC structure and trivia, and various other events, we hopefully conveyed valuable course information in a fun way. A big thank you goes out to our Provisional course speakers: Gayle Semtner & Jeary Seikel (History of JLOC), Susie Graves (your role as a JLOC community volunteer), and Pam Newby
(using your JLOC experiences for today and beyond). Your experience and wisdom is invaluable and we are sincerely grateful for your time! Our advisors this year (and their colored advisory groups) were Audra Doty-Bromagem (hot pink), Amanda Essaili (red), Amanda Campbell/Amy McDougall (yellow), Lauren Johnson (navy), Annie Sartin (purple), Samara Terrill (red), Kate Ward (light pink), Rebekah Wheeler (turquoise) and finally Kristen Hutter, who graciously agreed to be double placed when asked to serve as a PAT advisor for the orange group following the untimely death of our dear friend Cari Joyce. She will be greatly missed and we know she would be proud of the group’s accomplishments and the legacy of friendship she has left behind. A special thanks goes to our Sustaining Advisor Ann Trudgeon, whose supportive and encouraging hand was always there when we needed her. Congratulations to the Provisional Class of 2016! You will undoubtedly continue to blaze new trails and we know you have a bright JLOC future ahead of you!

helps the community and makes an impact in Oklahoma City, but it has completely impacted my life. The friendships that I’ve made, the trainings that I have attended, and the skills that I have honed are priceless. SARA SWEET President What do you think JLOC’S biggest impact is in the community? The JLOC’S biggest impact is its members-trained volunteers who serve not only the League itself, but many non-profits, organizations, schools and businesses throughout Oklahoma City.
TRACEY FREDERICK President Elect Why would you encourage your friends to join JLOC? JLOC not only
10 JULY 2016
SABRINA FROEHLICH Community Vice President What do you love most about living in Oklahoma City? What I love most about living in OKC is the PEOPLE! We have such an amazing community who are genuinely kind people that will look out for and care for not only their friends and network of people but total strangers, too. A great city isn’t just about what there is to do or what it looks like or even how great the weather is. Anyone can visit a FUN city but not all FUN places
are made up of incredibly selfless people. And OKC actually is a fun place to live, too!
SHEENA KARAMI Communications Vice President What is your favorite childhood memory? Anyone who knows me well knows my Dad is my best friend. I'm a girly version of him and have spent most of my life following him around to soak up all his awesomeness. My favorite memory is of him building me a life-size doll house, perfectly designed to where I could fit inside of it and play around with my toys. I remember watching and helping him build it, and while I didn't know what we were making at the time I knew it was important. In that one project he taught me the importance of planning, precision,
and why an attention to detail is paramount in any undertaking. Together we measured (and re-measured) my marks, sawed wood, drilled holes, and got all the panels ready to go. When I woke up the next day he had all the sides mounted to reveal a beautiful doll house. It was absolutely perfect... and we did it together! All our hard work has lasted a lifetime. Looking back, the experience was much more than a building tutorial. It was a lesson in the importance of sharing in life's moments with one another, no matter how big or small they may seem. So much of what we do in the Junior League is just that, honestly. Through our Community Projects we help enrich the lives of those we come in contact with on a daily basis: children in foster care, teenagers looking for a chance, adults working to better themselves for their families, and seniors in need of a "buddy" to share life's stories with. It's humbling to know how many times our women have been "that" person to someone in OKC, which truly makes me proud of my membership.
KELLY BROWN Administrative Vice President Do you have any fun summer plans? We spent a few days in Las Vegas in June and are spending a week in Colorado in July and another week in Colorado in August. I am also surprising my son with a one-on-one trip to Disneyland and Legoland in July. We also plan to spend a few weekends throughout the summer at Lake Texoma.
Board of Directors in Oklahoma City? I call Oklahoma City “The Land of Perfect” and I truly believe it. I moved here 8 years ago and couldn’t be happier. Low cost of living, thriving downtown, the OKC Thunder, and the lovely ladies of JLOC! KATHY SWIFT Membership Vice President Why would you encourage your friends to join JLOC? JLOC is full of opportunities for personal development and friendship. Our women are high quality and want to make a difference. If you are the company you keep, JLOC is a good place to be! Our projects are well developed and organized so time spent volunteering is put to good use!
SUMMER DEFEHR Financial Vice President What was your best vacation? I love to travel. I usually like exploring new places, but a constant in my life in recent years has been an annual trip to Emerald Isle, North Carolina in the Southern Outer Banks. I love the memories my kids are creating while playing on the beach, fishing, hunting crabs and spending time with family. It is a wonderful, relaxing trip and a great way to celebrate our wedding anniversary—I was married in the Outer Banks six years ago!
ALEXIS LUX Fundraising Vice President What do you love most about living
MANDY HEAPS Nominating Chair What is your favorite childhood memory? I loved visiting my grandparents' farm in Iowa as a child. I grew up in Florida so being on a farm felt very magical. We would play hide-and-seek in the cornfields (much to my grandma's dismay), play on all the tractors, shuck corn and peas, and eat too many homemade cookies (if there is such a thing). Iowa is still one of my favorite places.
KATHERINE HAGER Bylaws Chair What do you think JLOC’s biggest impact is in the community? I think our biggest impact is the numbers! This includes the number of actual volunteers and the combined total of hours worked every year. This combination helps contribute to the growth and enrichment of OKC, which is ultimately what we're all striving for! We were all taught to leave a place better than we found it and I think that is evident in the total number of hours JLOC contributes every year. We all work
very hard to make a project work the best way possible from start to finish and that everyone involved has fun. Satisfaction comes when we are a told a project can stand on it's own and JLOC is no longer needed. This opens up the door for new ideas and new projects.
SUE ANN HYDE Sustaining Advisor What was your best vacation? Ordinarily, I would proclaim the best vacation I ever took was the last one, but one really resonates with me. We floated the Grand Canyon with six other couples, close friends for years, all of us approximately seventy years of age. No geezers or whiners in this group! The 48 degree Colorado River from Lees Ferry to Diamond Creek...Seven days and six nights. Miraculous and stunning. A terrific adventure and learning experience. What we absorbed by floating with each other and remarkable guides... Learning the history of the canyon and discussing the concerns about the amazing Colorado River with the River Runners. Sleeping on sand and gazing at the rim 7 thousand feet up! Counted the layers of stone and rock that came before us millennium of years ago. Down to the deepest layer. Gorgeous colors, each layer blessed with an astounding name. Darkest nights. Stars you could touch. Slot canyons and caves with waterfalls and hanging floral gardens. Rock hopping, heart pounding scrambling climbs and wading in creeks. Us in hiking boots, guides in flip flops. Ancient pueblo ruins. Wild life... some up close and personal. Pitching our own tents, loaded and
unloaded our extensive gear (selfselected by each of us), off the raft and to and from tent site (one never realizes what one absolutely doesn't need for survival until hauling everything you simply could not live without up a 7 foot sand dune). Memo to file: Next time...EDIT! Learned to be meticulous about keeping camp site clean, since crumbs draw ants and ants draw snakes. No snacks in tents! We were introduced to a "groover" and the river-side theory of "skirts up" and "pants down" took on a whole new meaning. RAPIDS. GASP. FAST. BUMPY. ROLLER COASTER TWISTS AND TURNS. REALLY WET! REALLY COLD IN WATER, REALLY HOT OUT OF WATER. Never took a faster bath. Never fell asleep at night happier. Would do it all again in a heartbeat. Best of all, we all came back to OKC still friends full of unforgettable memories.
LESLIE COALE-MOSSMAN Chief of Staff Why would you encourage your friends to join JLOC? Inherently, I think we all want to help our community and its citizens and sometimes we don't know where to start. I always tell ladies that JLOC is the perfect place to meet likeminded women wanting to make OKC stronger. It's an easy first step to join, and when you realize how much your time impacts Oklahoma City, you just want to keep giving back.

Spread the Word!
h
ello Friends, Don’t look now but, just like that, another year of the Junior League of Oklahoma City (JLOC) has raced past us. Yet as a group we accomplished so much, and if we remember each event and each experience, it doesn’t feel like it raced by at all. It feels like it was full and satisfying, loaded with humor and friendships and a genuine use for our community. In fact, we found that we were doing so much good, and feeling so positive with it, that we extended our health and wellness commitment for a total of 10 years. I can’t wait to stay involved and to see how new leadership continues guiding us through this important focus. I wrote recently about our year in review so, rather than focusing on that once more, I’d like to say one last time how touched I am to see the dedication and service offered by each woman in this organization. And how touched I hope you have been by your involvement. I hope you’ve enjoyed personal growth while also embracing the excitement and closeness here. And because of all the good being done in JLOC, I truly hope you will spread the word. Share what you’ve experienced with others. Share the benefits you’ve enjoyed. And let’s continue to grow the Membership in order to share everything we have to offer.
Of course the goal is not only to grow a Membership, but to grow an active Membership. And that begins inside, within the women already here. That means each of us continuing to engage and even stepping up in terms of volunteering, and leading, and mentoring. If you’ve experienced personal growth by being involved, I can only say from my time here, that this growth expands and gets better the more you engage in this service. See where you are needed, even if it’s outside your comfort zone, and just watch happens! And with that thought, we close the book on this year with a favorite quote from Dr. Seuss: “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened at all.” And remember that there are so many more smiles to come, because when each JLOC year ends, it only begins once more under new leaders with new ideas and new enthusiasm. Sara Sweet brings so many amazing talents to her role as President. I know that Sara and the rest of the 2016-17 Board of Directors, as well as all the leaders and volunteers, bring so much value to JLOC and that they will all guide us into new adventures. It has been my theme throughout the year to share and expand our hearts through service and gratitude, so I can only finish my message
with a great big thank you for each and every one of you. From the amazing 2015-16 Board of Directors to the entire leadership team, from the individual community volunteers to the Project Managers, from the Provisionals to the Sustainers, the Community Advisory Board, Office Manager Lynsi Franklin, Finance Manager Helen Jones, and all other Members, everyone has given to make our city and community a better place to live. Everyone has served to make this the special year it was. And I couldn’t be more grateful about the success you’ve helped create in my year as President. I have been deeply fulfilled by this experience, and I hope you have been as well. With genuine, heartfelt gratitude,
Nazette Zuhdi-Cleaver President 2015-16

Variety Pack Packs a Punch By Sabrina Froehlich
T
he Variety Pack placement is a special way that the JLOC Volunteers can partner with great agencies and their event based projects that may not be large enough or meet all the requirements that a traditional placement requires. These partnerships are found and vetted in the same way that all the traditional placements are, yet they are packaged together and led by the JLOC Variety Pack Volunteers. We have participated in some wonderful events and it is so exciting to have these events deliver an even broader reach in the community. On April 18, the JLOC Variety Pack volunteers partnered with the Oklahoma City Ballet Company and their annual ArtsReach event. This event serves over 100 Title 1 schools across Central Oklahoma giving the children 8 weeks of education on all things ballet including: ballet terms, positions, history, famous dancers and stagecraft. At the end of the 8 weeks, the children attend a special performance by the Oklahoma City Ballet at the Civic Center Music Hall – this year it was a wonderful performance of Peter
Pan. The JLOC Volunteers put together goody bags that included a healthy snack and a pedometer. The bags were handed out to the children in attendance as they left the ballet performance. Girls on the Run is another event the JLOC Variety Pack ladies help with. Girls on the Run is an organization whose mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. This year the Girls on the Run Oklahoma County 5k was held on May 21 at Wheeler Park on the Oklahoma River. JLOC Variety Pack Volunteers again put together a goody bag for the event participants including a water bottle, a healthy snack, and a pedometer. Variety Pack Project volunteers are spending their summer promoting health in the community through a couple of unique projects. Dream Night at the Zoo on June 3 gave volunteers the opportunity to bring children with developmental disabilities a time at the Zoo after the gates were closed
to the public to enjoy some quality zoo time. Variety Pack volunteers manned a family photo booth so children and families could capture special memories during the event. In July, project members will work with Citizens Caring for Children to run the Back to School drive for foster children in Oklahoma City. Volunteers will go “shopping” with the foster children to pick out clothing and grade-appropriate school supplies at the Citizens Caring for Children warehouse. Making sure these children have the materials they need to have a successful school year is the goal of this project. Additionally, Variety Pack project volunteers are busy planning for the JLOC Zone at The Children’s Hospital of OU Medical Center’s Wiggle Out Loud event Sept. 18. Wiggle Out Loud is a family friendly event that promotes healthy lifestyles through music, physical activity, and creative projects. It will feature six nationally touring children’s music artists, a local performances stage, arts-and-crafts stations, and the JLOC play Zone for physical activity and movement.

JLOC 2016-17 Project Updates
J
LOC is excited to welcome the following three new project partnerships to our Community lineup! Our volunteers will have a large-scale impact with these three unique projects, as each works with multiple diverse populations and ages across central Oklahoma! Family Fun Nights with the OKC-County Health Department: Junior League volunteers will work with the Health Department to plan engaging activities for kids, adults, seniors and their families, including leading a physical activity for all ages, providing a demonstration for healthy cooking, and exploring the many trails and open green space at the OCCHD campus. Our ultimate goal is to promote various healthy lifestyle options, while also enlightening individuals and families about the Department’s helpful services! Various other community partners will also be available to offer giveaways and resources on healthy lifestyle choices for everyone in attendance. Open Streets with the OKC-County Health Department: JLOC volunteers will plan, organize, and execute a fun activity for the public attending two Open Streets community events, as well as manage a booth at each event representing the Junior League and promoting our health focus. Open Streets is a car-free, pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly outdoor event designed to encourage non-motorized transportation and general wellness. Under the guidance of the Project Manager, members in this placement will choose the nature of the activity presented, the age group(s) to which it should cater, and even whether to offer food as part of (or in addition to) the activity! Successful booths

at past events have included smoothie-making, bicycles, hula hoop competitions, obstacle courses for children, and even line dancing, so this is a placement where creativity and activity shine. Variety Pack – Wiggle Out Loud with The Children’s Hospital: Junior Leaguers will partner with The Children’s Hospital during Wiggle Out Loud, Oklahoma City’s free, active-family music festival! Wiggle Out Loud aims to get kids of all ages movin’ and groovin’ their way to healthier lives. This is an event for all ages that features music, activities, artwork and more! Junior League volunteers will organize a JLOC specific booth and activity area, while also helping to run other event activities such as yoga, lawn bowling, spin art, and obstacle courses. Together, volunteers will help The Children’s Hospital celebrate healthy lifestyles through movement and fun!
CONCLUDED PROJECTS The following projects were concluded at the end of the 2015-16 year. Each Partnering Agency will receive a $250 donation on behalf of the Junior League of Oklahoma City to help their project move forward as it becomes a self-sustaining project! Additionally, each organization has been asked to reapply for future projects they have that may fall within the parameters of our Health Focus. New READ (Research, Education and Development) RFP Applications were released in June 2016 and each Agency received a copy. Concluding projects include: A Soldier’s Story, OKC VA Hospital
Eat Better Move More / Tai Chi, Oklahoma Healthy Aging Initiative Infant Crisis Services – Variety Pack Regional Food Bank – Variety Pack After a long and successful partnership with the OKC VA Hospital, A Soldier’s Story was concluded this year. JLOC members worked with service men and women of all ages at the VA Hospital, engaging these patients through conversation, reading letters, playing games, and decorating for the holidays! In a partnership with the Oklahoma Healthy Aging Initiative, JLOC volunteers were certified Tai Chi instructors with Eat Better Move More / Tai Chi taught. Our volunteers led classes focused on the benefits of this low-impact, relaxing form of exercise, which focused on both the mental and physical health of our senior participants. At the end of the instructional 12-week period, senior participants “graduated” from the class and celebrated their accomplishment with JLOC members! Variety Pack projects with Infant Crisis Services and Regional Food Bank have been long-standing and educational projects within JLOC. Offering flexible day/time volunteer opportunities for our Variety Pack members, at both organizations our women were able to sort vital donations respective to each agency’s mission. Whether it be baby supplies needed to feed and clothe infants through Infant Crisis Services, or food donations used to feed the hungriest in our community through the Regional Food Bank, our volunteers truly helped serve Oklahomans of all ages.
