MISSION The Junior League of Oklahoma City, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

VISION The Junior League of Oklahoma City, Inc. will empower volunteers to impact our community and enrich lives.

FOCUS Changing Lives Through Literacy

ighty-five fabulous years! This is the Junior League of Oklahoma City’s 85th year of making a positive impact in our community. During the year, we will be honoring our past, living the moment, and planning our future.

The year will be full of events and activities celebrating our rich history, our current work, Changing Lives Through Literacy, and raising funds for our future endeavors in Oklahoma City. We will need Provisionals, Actives, Sustainers, and community leaders to help us achieve success.

We began the League year with a volunteer training for our members serving in a community placement. The Boys & Girls Club hosted us in their facility. Kelli Dupuy, of Sunbeam Family Services, provided training on volunteering within community agencies - what to expect and how to respond appropriately. Elizabeth Moon from Infant Crisis Services and A. Jaye Johnson of the Boys & Girls Club also spoke to our members, sharing stories of JLOC’s current and past volunteer impact.

Our summer was full of meaningful work. Several of our projects are up and running, and three of them have completed their annual tasks: Wild Tuesday Story Time Safaris at the OKC Zoo, lead by Project Manager Caroline Mildren, engaged a record number of children with juvenile literature and special visits from the zookeepers and their furry, feathered, and scaly friends; our JLOC Book Project at Citizens Caring for Children (CCC) - with the assistance of Bank of Oklahoma - has completed a library for visiting children under the guidance of Project Manager Ashleigh Muse; also working with CCC, Ginny Starr (Project Manager) organized our Back to School project, providing backpacks full of school supplies to metro foster children, giving them the opportunity to begin the school year prepared, with pride and dignity. The Remarkable Shop, under the leadership of Kimberly Swan, held a ‘Whale of a Sale,’ and has revamped the store, showcasing much more merchandise and enticing prices! Our Provisionals have been busy in the back room of the shop and it is looking good! A huge thank you to each of you who participated in these community projects - and at the Remarkable Shop - to make the summer and upcoming school year a little nicer and easier for so many others.

Mistletoe Market is just around the corner! We are excited to be returning to the Cox Convention Center, in downtown Oklahoma City, for our second year! Our preview party will be the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 10. The Market will open to the public on Thursday, Oct. 11 and run through Saturday, Oct. 13. Market Chair, Amy Logan Parrish, and the entire Mistletoe Market Board are hard at work building on our past success, and we believe this will be our best Mistletoe Market yet! I hope you will join us, and bring your friends, as every ticket sold helps fund our community projects!

I am thrilled to announce that our evening General Meetings will be held this year at the centrally located Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club (day meetings will be at the JLOC Headquarters.) Our first meeting will be an evening only meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 11. You will have the opportunity to get your Black Book, Mistletoe Market T-shirts, and more! We will also be presenting a very exciting proposal for two cash gifts to our community for your approval. Come early to discuss League work and build friendships. My goal for our General Meetings is to make them informative, energetic, and FUN, so you will definitely want to attend each and every one.

long with fall comes many great traditions, like pumpkin carving, college football, and of course Mistletoe Market! This year’s shopping extravaganza is set for Thursday Oct. 11-Saturday Oct. 13 at the Cox Convention Center in downtown Oklahoma City, with the preview party on Wednesday, Oct. 10.

This year’s market features a number of new vendors offering unique gifts, home décor, women’s clothing and accessories, children’s clothing, men’s accessories, Christmas décor, food, jewelry, stationary, and so much more.

And for all you football fans - don’t worry! We’ll have coverage of Saturday’s football games available in the Mathis Brothers Lounge so you can keep up-todate with the scores and cheer for your favorite team while you shop. Other special

events throughout Market include a Girls’ Night Out and Bobbi Brown Makeovers, just to name a few. Stay tuned for more Market details at the September General Membership Meeting.

As the League’s largest fundraiser, proceeds from Mistletoe Market help fund the many community programs supported by the Junior League of Oklahoma City.

By purchasing your quota tickets, volunteering at your shift, and shopping with your friends and family, you are helping to ensure this year’s market will be a success.

At the Junior League of Oklahoma City, we wrote the book on holiday shopping. So put your game face on and get excited for Mistletoe Market 2012!

PREVIEW PARTY: Each year, members are invited to get a jump start on their shopping experience at Mistletoe Market’s Sip, Shop and Mingle

Preview party, which is known for fun, food, and fabulous shopping. This year’s preview party is from 6-9 p.m., Wednesday Oct. 10. The party will feature a Vegasstyle step and repeat, delicious food from local restaurants, live music, and of course lots of shopping!

Preview Party tickets are $40 in advance or $50 at the door. Junior League members have always made Sip, Shop and Mingle a can’t-miss event and are encouraged to purchase a ticket. Better, yet, purchase two and make it a girls’ night out!

QUOTA TICKETS: Each Junior League member is required to purchase six quota tickets for $30. Similar to the past few years, all Active and Provisional members will be mailed their quota ticket bundle, whether or not they have ordered them online by the mailing date. Members are still required to pay for their tickets before the close of Market on Saturday, Oct. 13. Payment will be accepted online at jloc.org or at the September General Membership Meeting.

Members are encouraged to share their quota tickets with friends, family, and coworkers who are dying to shop until they drop at Mistletoe Market!

SHIFT SIGN UP: All Active and Provisional members are required to work a shift for Mistletoe Market. There are a variety of shifts available before, during, and after Market. Shifts will occur during the following times:

Members will sign up for their shifts online at jloc.org beginning at 6 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 12 through Friday, Sept. 28. Shifts are available on a first come, first serve basis. Shift sign up instructions will be given at the September General Membership Meeting. All shifts will take place at the Cox Convention Center unless otherwise noted.

Remarkable Shop’s Whale of a Sale Goes Swimmingly!

T

he Remarkable Shop hosted their summer Whale of a Sale July 27-28, allowing regular and new customers to stock up on clothing and household goods at bargain basement prices.

“Our goal was to really clean out the backroom and make way for the upcoming fall quota,” Remarkable Shop Chair Kimberly Swan said. “We literally had tables and tables of holiday items and our customers loved all the festive merchandise. It was like Christmas in July!”

The sale grossed about $3,000 and over 1,600 items were sold during the sale.

The leftover holiday items were donated to St. Luke’s United Methodist Women for their annual garage sale.

“We had so many little items and it was great to get those out of the stockroom,” Swan said. “We are really working to reorganize our back room because our fall merchandise will be out on the floor in just a few weeks.”

Swan continued, “This year’s Provisionals have been such rock stars, really dedicating themselves to making the shop look wonderful and moving our merchandise. We also had several JLOC Board members come through to support the sale, work in the heat and bring us some yummy snacks. Thanks to everyone for their support and hard work helping us make the sale very successful. The entire Remarkable Shop Board is grateful!”

JLOC: 85 Years of Training and Development- Learn More, Do More

T

his year, the Training and Leadership Development Committee will focus on opportunities available to our members that will showcase all of the great things this city has to offer by way of professional and personal development, with a little entertainment along the way.

Oklahoma City is growing by leaps and bounds so it’s hard to always keep a pulse on this ever changing city. By focusing on local services, businesses, and entertainment, we hope to open your eyes to the endless opportunities this great city has for everyone.

In an effort to accommodate our busy lives, we are going to offer more activities during evenings and weekends, as well as some more than once during the year. This way if you miss something, you can always catch it again another time later in the year.

Some of the exciting things we have planned for this year are:

Provisional Summer Social The provisional class and their advisors met on Aug. 8 at Bellini’s. The group bonded over delectable appetizers and delicious drinks. New friends were made and established friendships were refreshed.

The turnout was strong and

League members Sheena Karami, Leah Harroz, & Alisha Kaighen enjoying the social

members were enthusiastic about being able to socialize in Classen Curve’s newest women’s boutique. The purpose of this event was to bring all members of the JLOC together for fellowship and fun, and to pay tribute to the inspiring women within the chapter.

Attendees socialized with old friends and new, while considering potential purchases. Many of the women were not only enjoying the lovely fashions but also the décor of the boutique, such as the custom Australian chandelier that is the focal point of the store. Italian Moscato and California Chardonnay flowed as the evening grew on. Smiles and warmth were abundant and the evening was blessed with fantastic weather, wonderful ambiance, and fun conversations.

ttend almost any fundraiser in Oklahoma City and odds are that you’ll meet a Junior League woman before the event is over. You’ll find her at the table with other Board members, volunteering behind a silent auction table, or serving as a gracious hostess while greeting guests. If, by chance, you miss her that night, it’s likely because she is quietly working from home on a large capital campaign. Today’s Junior League woman, who is active in the field of fundraising, is living our mission to the fullest. She is committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. It should be no surprise that internal fundraising within our own Junior League Annual Campaign has experienced tremendous growth over the past few years. Our Active volunteers are quickly learning about fundraising … and it shows!

Campaign is an opportunity to learn about the fundraising cycle, which is in addition to the skills we learn from event fundraising through Mistletoe Market or through managing business operations with the Remarkable Shop. The Annual Campaign requires that we identify, cultivate, solicit, and manage stewardship of donors within our own internal environment. Fortunately for us many donors are uniquely our own. Take a glance at a database of donors and you’ll find a long list of women who are either active or sustaining members of the Junior League. Where is the opportunity for the Annual Campaign in our 2012-2013 year? The answer is our own members of course!

The Financial Development Committee is working towards several key goals this year. One goal is increased participation from our membership. We want our community to see the investment and pride we have in our own organization. This isn’t a goal set by dollars, but an appeal to our members – Provisional, Active and Sustainer - to give what you can as a sign

of support. Another goal of the committee is to celebrate our 85th year of serving the Oklahoma City community by making a special donation to one or two of our community partners. A long-term goal will be to utilize the Annual Campaign as a learning experience for our Active members, while continuing to increase annual contributions in the future.

This year is a celebratory year for the Junior League of Oklahoma City. It’s a time for our membership to step-back with pride and acknowledge our 85 years of impact in our community. It’s also an ideal time to envision what the next 85 years will hold for us and make an investment in the volunteers who are to follow those of today.

What Junior League Means to Me

I

remember being 19 years old, carefree and simply enjoying the warm summer days of Washington, D.C. I had just been accepted into the internship program at Georgetown University, where I was paired with a mentor named Jill. She was a modern day Audrey Hepburn who worked for a philanthropic organization in Washington, D.C. Jill, who was a member of The Junior League, would always talk to me about the organization and describe a whole group of women dedicated to philanthropy, making the world better, and uplifting each other. A dream come true in my eyes.

Three years later, I joined The Junior League of Oklahoma City as soon as I was eligible for membership – which also happened to be my first year of medical school. I was sponsored by Pam Newby, one of JLOC’s previous presidents.

I joined The Junior League because I

wanted to surround myself with amazing role models, which I have found in JLOC members such as Pam Newby and Lisa McConnell. And of course there are the wonderful girls in my Provisional class, plus those who go a step further to bring our class together, like Laura Steen. And those girls whose ambition for life never ceases to keep amazing me, like Lydia and Leah Sullivan.

I just wanted to welcome the 2012-2013 JLOC Provisional Class and say you are joining a wonderful organization full of beautiful women inside and out; not only will you have the opportunity to better yourself, but you will become friends with some of the most amazing women in Oklahoma. The Junior League of Oklahoma City offers it all - friendship, fun, philanthropy, and a chance to make the world around you a better place.

Remarkable Shop board members, mentors, and Provisional members proudly welcomed 17 children from the Oklahoma County Boys & Girls Club into the store on July 29, for a back-to-school community shopping event. Each child in attendance was given at least two complete outfits, shoes, school supplies and a new backpack. In total, the shop gave away 111 items totaling almost $400.

“What a wonderful day,” Remarkable Shop Chair Kimberly Swan said. “We loved having the children in the store and were so happy to help them find some new

clothing and school supplies. Many of these children have a very limited wardrobe and don’t get a new backpack every year. It was an honor to help them start off the school year in a positive way.”

Swan continued, “I especially want to thank our generous provisional class who graciously donated the backpacks and school supplies. You really helped brighten the lives of these children!”

The Remarkable Shop board plans to assist at least four more children in the coming weeks, and is making plans for a Christmas community event. More details to come!

The kids are back in school - do you have a funny memory from your first days of school?

A funny memory would have to be the year my sister was born. I was 7 and I wanted to bring my new baby sister to school with me, and I could not understand why she couldn’t come with me.

So she ended up being my show and tell!

As a child, what did you

want to be when you grew up/what do you do now?

I always wanted to be an artist or something that let me be creative - I love decorating and fashion. That is why I am so excited to be the Mistletoe Market Decorations Chair this year! The decorations will reflect my love of art and making everything pretty! I am working at Sabrina’s, a clothing store, and try to paint when or if I ever have any free time.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Oklahoma City.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

That growing up I loved anything and everything to do with horses.

I took lessons for many years and owned my own horse.

Did you take a summer vacation?

I went on a few quick weekend getaways: one to Sedona, and the most recent to Kansas City with my family. But the best was here in OKC - we hosted a family reunion, where I met cousins and relatives from all over the US and one from Paris.

Most I had not seen since I was very young or had never met at all. It was an amazing experience!

The holidays are right around the corner! How early do you start shopping for gifts? When do you finish?

I usually start shopping at Mistletoe Market. It just gets you excited about the holiday season and ready to start shopping. But of course I end up shopping up until the last minute as well.

Who is your favorite vendor?

What are your favorite items to buy at Mistletoe Market?

I love the holiday deco mesh and ornament booth. I went a little crazy decorating my house for Christmas the past few years, so I like to add a few new things each year.

What is your all time favorite Mistletoe Market purchase?

I bought a cute key chain several years before I was in the League, and I still use it to this day.

Mistletoe Market has always been a favorite of mine - I have been attending for many years and would always plan to come home that weekend, even when I was in college.

What do you want to be for Halloween? Are you dressing up?

Not sure what I will be, but we do dress up the dogs. Tulip is a lady bug and Paisley will be a my little pony.

What kind of Halloween candy can you not resist?

Candy Corn!

I am serving on the League Link Committee and the May General Meeting Sub-Committee.

What motivated you to join the Junior League of Oklahoma City?

What ultimately led me to join was Debbie Anglin. I am fairly new to the Oklahoma City area so I had been scouting which

multiple government agencies and now the owner of Liberté, a woman’s boutique. charity organizations I wanted to become involved in versus just which one I wanted to donate towards. Debbie told me that being involved with the Junior League would be a perfect fit for me.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I have never been to Mistletoe Market but I am very much looking forward to this upcoming one. I am most looking forward to getting to share the experience with my family and friends.

requires no real thought process, meaning my mind can shut off from the stresses of life into utter silliness. My current guilty pleasure book is Janet Evanovich’s newest book, Wicked Business. Evanovich is one of those rare authors that can actually get me to laugh out loud which is a nice change from all the thought provoking and dramatic books. I don’t know if I have a favorite book of all time but a favorite book of mine is a John Grisham novel, called The Brethern. It is one of his lesser known books but it is fabulous, although I cannot recall ever reading a bad John Grisham novel.

What one word would you use to describe yourself? What word would your friends use to describe you?

I would probably describe myself as determined, but I think others would probably describe me more as loyal or generous.

Fall also means Halloween… what was your favorite or most memorable Halloween costume?

Halloween is probably my second favorite holiday. My favorite costume was probably last year’s when I was the Mad Hatter and my Maltipoo, Lily, was the queen of Hearts. It was just too cute!

What book are you reading right now? And what is your favorite book of all time?

At any given time, I am reading four books because I am often reading for different reasons.

What has been your favorite JLOC placement?

What influenced you to join the Junior League and what impact has it made on your life?

A friend in the film business invited me to join. Luckily for me, the Junior League of Los Angeles let me work all my hours in bunches, as I was out of the country a good deal of my Provisional year, on location (but I finished all my hours on time!) The impact has been huge.

I’ve been able to make a difference in the lives of many people through our community projects, and they have made my life richer.

In the community, being Project Manager for the inaugural year of “A Soldier’s Story” after having developed it the year before. The relationships I built with the veterans were a precious gift, and I am still in contact with several of them. In League, President-elect. The opportunities during the year are great. Working with so many wonderful women in the JLOC and from Leagues around the country; the training I received at conferences; working with agencies and other non-profits in OKC; having a seat on the OKC

Chamber; building a vision and getting to see it begin to take shape – these experiences have all been very rewarding.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a filmmaker.

Fortunately, I was able to do that for 15 years, in Los Angeles, before I met my husband.

What is your biggest goal for the League this year?

I’d like the outcomes from our community projects to be life altering for our clients, and for our members to be so excited by all the positive impact we’re making, they’ll want to be lifelong members. I’d also like for all the extensive 85th anniversary and focus change work we are doing this year to be a success, and pave the way for even better years to come. And for everyone to have fun!

What is your favorite part of Mistletoe Market?

The Preview Party for sure.

What’s your best Mistletoe Market memory?

When the bubble roof at the fairgrounds collapsed (just a little.) And, no, I had nothing to do with it!

How do you keep a healthy work/life balance?

I work hard, vacation long, and surround myself with people I love. And, aside from League meeting nights, we always have dinner together as a family.

What’s the next skill or knowledge set you want to develop?

I want to develop my painting skills, and learn Italian fluently.

But that will have to wait for June 1, 2013.

I loved the Junior League newssheet and was placed there for five years. Our committee had great writers who wrote about the community and the JL.

How do you see the impact of the JLOC on your life?

What was your favorite accomplishment of your year as JLOC President?

It was great to be the first president with a president-elect.

That was also the year we moved to Blinn House Headquarters. It was a great honor to represent the Junior League in the community.

How do you define the role of a Sustaining Advisor?

The Sustaining Advisor should support the president and other board members throughout the year. Other sustainers can voice their concerns to me, and

I will take them to the board if necessary. It is very special to be working with this year’s president, Cristi Reiger. She is so intelligent, organized, and has made board meetings fun!

Why is it important to you to stay involved as a Sustainer?

Most Sustaining members love the League and like to meet the Active League members.

I love being involved because I enjoy seeing both of my daughters’ friends working in the community, and I love meeting the younger members.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

No surprises. My life is an open book.

What was your favorite part about going back to school as a child?

Loved the school supplies.

Are there any Market purchases you make each year?

I always check out the jewelry and children’s booths.

What do you most look forward to at Mistletoe Market?

Mistletoe Market gives all members a chance to work together and get to know each other. They always have such creative ideas and there is something new every year. The Preview Party is very special.

Reading Rainforest Plants Fun and Education Downtown

he Junior League of Oklahoma City planted the seeds of a new placement downtown this summer with Reading Rainforest starting in June at the Myriad Gardens Crystal Bridge.

“With our new management by the Foundation the emphasis has been to really increase our programming and outreach as well as customer service,” said Kenton Peters, Education Coordinator with the Myriad Botanical Gardens. “The Reading Rainforest volunteers brought

visitors that were just here to visit the Children’s Garden into the Crystal Bridge for the program and they got to experience a fun program as well as a fun tour of the conservatory.”

Each Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m., Junior League volunteers read a story to a group of school-aged children pertaining to the rainforest, fish, insects, the environment, and plants. The kids enjoy a snack and juice box while listening to the story. Following the story, volunteers help the children complete a craft. Some of the crafts have included planting a

rainforest in a jar, making a butterfly feeder, assembling a bug catcher, and creating a candy aquarium. After the kids finish their craft, they are taken on a guided tour of the gardens inside the Crystal Bridge.

“When the children experienced the Crystal Bridge tour there was usually a look of amazement, first as they enter and hear the pounding of the water nearby, then next as they walk across the bridge right next to the large waterfall that is making all of the noise,” Peters said. “The children enjoy seeing trees and

Smelling a leaf off of our Allspice or Cinnamon tree elicits a positive response as most find the fragrance reminiscent of pumpkin pie or breakfast cereal.”

The placement has had some challenges, primarily being a new program that many parents do not know about. Volunteers venture out to the playground and around the gardens to pull in participants each week. Another obstacle has been the breakdown of the much-anticipated water spray ground at the Garden, causing less traffic downtown. Despite the challenges, the volunteers have seen a steady growth of families attending the program and even some repeat customers!

“We seemed to have more and more children attending the storytime as the summer progressed,” Peters said. “Even with temperatures reaching past 100 degrees we are still having families attending the program.”

While the children are allowed to tour the gardens for free, the League has picked up the tab for some parents who wanted to join their children but couldn’t afford to pay. The program continued each Saturday through August.

JLOC Wins Big at the AJLI Annual Conference

he Junior League of Oklahoma City was recently named the winner of the Honorable Mention Award for Vision and also for Fund Development at the 2012 Annual Conference of The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. on April 21 in San Francisco. JLOC received the award for Vision for our exemplary work in the area of financial literacy with our community partner, YWCA. This project was developed from the ground up by League members in 2009. In the last two years, this project has educated many women in the YWCA’s Transitional Housing program through twice monthly financial literacy lessons, and approximately 600 Oklahoma City residents through the annual Money Mania event. Congratulations to all volunteers that have given their time to YWCA’s Financial Literacy program and a huge thank you to Gina Burchfiel for all of her past work on this project, and for authoring our award application this year. Great job!

JLOC also received the Fund Development Honorable Mention Award. In 2009, JLOC revamped the

Annual Campaign in efforts to increase member participation, as well as raise additional money to support JLOC’s 17 community literacy projects. By rolling out the themes “$20.10 N 2010” and “MPact Lives, Give $25” the following year, JLOC continued its efforts to raise awareness about the Annual Campaign and the significance donations have on our mission and vision of helping the community and training volunteers. JLOC’s themed Annual Campaigns have been very

successful. They have educated the membership and prospective donors about the importance of contributing to the Annual Campaign, and how their money is used within the organization.

Participation has more than doubled from 2008-2009 to the following years.

Boys & Girls Club Child Literacy

By Amna Choudry The Boys and Girls Club is one of the Junior League of Oklahoma City’s most popular placements. The Boys and Girls Club provides a safe and encouraging place for children to go after school, and the JLOC volunteers in this placement work to improve the literacy skills among these children, as well as inspire them with a passion for reading. Amy Bradt paints a picture of a place where children not only improve their reading skills individually, but also through the help of their classmates.

“It was really neat to see the kids work together at such a young age and to help each other become better individuals.”

Another favorite memory of hers involves a particular child she spent oneon-one reading time with at the Boys and Girls Club. That same child - two years later – remembered her and flagged her down

at a store in order to thank her for the time she spent with him, helping him with his phonetics, pronunciation, and most importantly encouraging him. The belief she had in that child inspired him and left a lasting impact.

Wild Tuesday Story Time Safaris

ild Tuesday Story Time Safaris at the Oklahoma City Zoo has been a huge success with a total of 1,077 kids and 562 adults attending the sessions this summer.

We have also given away 486 books to children in our Eager Reader program! Our spot at Grandma’s Porch in the Children’s Zoo has been great and is able to accommodate our growing number of guests.

Even more importantly, it provides space in the shade with fans - great for all of the hot days we had this summer!

We are thrilled that we have been able to impact and encourage so many young readers with only seven Junior League volunteers. We have had a wonderful time this summer and are looking forward to seeing the program continue to grow next summer as well!

Back to School

I

t’s hard to believe that summer is over and it is now time to prepare for school again! While most people are furiously school supply and backpack shopping, buying their children nice new clothes for the first day of school, there are a number of kids that are not afforded that luxury. There are countless children in the Oklahoma City area that have sadly been taken out of their parents’ home and placed in foster care, due to abuse or neglect. These are the children that do not get to go to Target and select the greatest/nicest/coolest backpack. These are the children that do not know where they may even be sleeping in two weeks.

Thanks to the Junior League and Citizens Caring for Children, there is a project called Back to School that offers school-age children a new backpack and school supplies to prepare them for the year ahead.

With the help of 10 to 12 amazing Junior League volunteers, the back two rooms of

Citizens Caring for Children is transformed into a store-like setting, with many varieties of backpacks hanging on the walls and school supplies neatly displayed in bookcases and on tables. The volunteers greet each child with a warm smile and kind words, and in return the children leave our “store” with some hope for the next few weeks and maybe longer.

I am sincerely grateful for the energy, enthusiasm, and dedication of the entire Junior League staff and volunteers in their support of this project. We have made an impact in many troubled lives and we see it every single day when we hear a sincere “thank you” and a smile.

t’s that time of year again…ODI (Organizational Development Institute) is right around the corner and the Nominating Committee wants to hear from YOU! ODIs are a series of educational training meetings held over the course of AJLI’s trainings and meetings calendar year. Over the

years, ODIs have demonstrated their effectiveness as informative, inspiring and innovative three-day weekend training programs.

1. Wine and War: The French, The Nazis and the Battle for France’s Greatest Treasure by Donald and Petie Kladstrup. It’s actually a pretty good read - the authors interviewed several vintners about their experiences during WWII and the lengths they went to to preserve their way of life and a key part of the nation’s heritage. It’s a different perspective on the war told through the stories of those who lived it.

2. The Geography of Bliss: One Grump’s Search for the Happiest Places in the World by Eric Weiner. The author is an NPR reporter who got to travel to several different countries (India, Iceland, Qatar, Moldavia, to name a few) to explore the concept of happiness in each. Location, culture, and psychology place unique roles in developing the concept of happiness in each place, and it is all the more fascinating told through the author’s humorous prism.

3. It’s a toss up between Corduroy by Don Freeman and The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams - with The Velveteen Rabbit winning by a “hare.” I still get a little mistyeyed just thinking about the book.

Though, Corduroy is special because it is one of the first books I bought on my own from the school book fair.

1. I’m currently reading Jennifer Weiner’s The Next Best Thing. I love chick lit and this one is great!

2. The book that I tell everyone to read is The Help. It is, by far, the best book I’ve ever read, especially in the last two years. It makes you want to make the world a better place and you have to laugh at some of the Junior League references!

3. My favorite children’s book is 10 Apples Up On Top. It was the first book I could read by myself, the whole way through, and I was so proud.

My parents still have the video of me reading it if you want proof!

1. I am reading Would it Kill You to Stop Doing That: A Modern Guide to Manners by Henry Alford.

2. I loved reading The Help.

3. My favorite children’s book is Little Women.

1. I just finished reading The Great Gatsby. I read this classic years ago and enjoyed the work of F. Scott Fitzgerald. I recently saw a preview for a redo on the movie with Robert Redford and thought I would read this story for a refresher. It truly is a classic.

2. Some of my favorite reads from the past year include: The Help, Hunger Games, The Same Kind of Different as Me, and Heaven is For Real.

There is nothing better than getting reeled into a page turner.

3. My favorite children’s books include Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and Charlotte’s Web. These books were the sweetest books and I could read them over and over again!
